Abstract:A precessing jet generated by a fluidic nozzle is a jet self-excited rotating with respect to a special axis other than its own centreline. The present study investigates the influence the nozzle inlet configuration has on the precession. Three inlet configurations, i.e., a long pipe, a smooth contraction and an orifice, are tested. It is demonstrated that, at the same inlet diameter (d(1)) and bulk velocity (U-1), the jet issuing from an orifice plate is excited to precess at the highest frequency while the precession frequency f(p) for the pipe jet is lowest. Further, the Strouhal number of precession defined by St(p) = f(p)d(1)/U-1 is substantially higher for the orifice case than for the other cases. These findings are of important significance for better understanding and characterising turbulent mixing of the precessing jet.
