Abstract:We present a high-dispersive multilayer mirror for pulse stretching in a femtosecond fiber laser amplification system.The designed mirror contains 54 layers with a total physical thickness of 7.3 μm, which can provide a positive group delay dispersion（GDD） of 600 fs2and a high reflectance over 99.9% from 1010 to 1070 nm. The samples were prepared by dual ion beam sputtering. The measured transmittance matches well with the theoretical result. The GDD characteristics of samples were tested by home-made white light interferometer. The measured GDD is higher than the design results,an average GDD of +722 fs2from 1010 nm to 1070 nm. The mirrors were employed in a Yb-doped large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber amplification system. An input pulse compressed by the gratings with autocorrelation function of83 fs is obtained with a stretched FWHM of 1.29 ps after 28 bounces between the dispersive mirrors. The results show that the multilayer dispersive mirror could be an effective and promising technique for pulse stretching in femtosecond amplification systems.

Abstract:According to the requirements for design and manufacture, we choose double-chirped method for designing the initial structure of the chirped coatings, and analyze the dependencs of reflectivity and group delay dispersion on the parameters of coatings such as the double-chirped modulation factor and the the proportion of double-chirped layers on the total thin film stack. Further more, we establish their optimal values. Based on the analysis, a chirped mirror pair, whose reflectivity is more than 99.5% and average group delay dispersion is -40 fs(2) with a residual ripple of less than +/- 20 fs(2) in a wavelength range of 600 nm-1050 nm, is demonstrated, which is to be used in the Ti: Sapphire femtosecond laser system for dispersion compensation.

Abstract:The dispersive mirrors with a third order dispersion (TOD) of about −10000 fs3 at the wavelength of 1040 nm and a compensation bandwidth of 20 nm are designed and fabricated with ion beam sputtering (IBS) technique. A good agreement between the measured and calculated group delay dispersion (GDD) and TOD of the mirror is achieved. These mirrors are employed in a Yb-doped femtosecond nonlinear amplification fiber laser system to compensate the residual TOD in the system. We show that after TOD compensation, the system outputs 44 fs laser pulses with little wing at 26.6 W output average power and 531 nJ pulse energy, corresponding to 10.8 MW peak power.

Abstract:The design, fabrication and characterization of the dispersive multilayers are presented in this paper. Two kinds of dispersive mirror (High dispersion and 700-900nm Gires-Tournois mirrors) are designed by employing Particle Swarm Optimization method which demonstrates fast convergence speed and less dependence on the initial parameters. The mirrors are experimentally fabricated by home-made dual ion beam sputtering system with stable deposition rate and high density. A white light interferometry is built for precisely measuring the dispersion properties. A novel wavelet-based differentiation approach is introduced with considerable resistance to measurement error. The good agreement between the measured and designed results verifies the accuracy of both the fabrication and characterization method. Finally, two applications of Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber laser and Ti:Sapphire crystal oscillation cavity, which use our fabricated mirrors for dispersion compensation, are presented. Good output characteristics of both the two ultrafast laser systems are obtained.

Abstract:We built a dispersive white-light spectral interferometer for precisely measuring the dispersion properties of a multilayer thin-film structure. A novel algorithm with improved robustness to measurement errors is presented by combining a windowed Fourier transformation with wavelet-based differentiation. Compared with previously published algorithms, this method shows substantial resistance to measurement errors. The group delay dispersion properties of bulk materials and a homemade chirped mirror are measured by our apparatus, and the measurement result manifests considerable accuracy and robustness. The technique shows reasonable potential for the characterization of ultrabroadband chirped mirrors.

Abstract:Theoretical research and numeric model of dispersion compensation of chirped super Gaussian pulses are presented, using chirped fiber grating with the apodization of parabola squared function. It shows that pulses, after transmitting in a fiber length, will become broadened because of dispersion. When using chirped fiber grating with the apodization of parabola squared function, pulses can be compensated with the results that the width of pulses is more narrow and the max-power is higher, compared with using chirped fiber grating with the apodization of Gaussian function. The pulses are distorted after being compensated. The max-power has something to do with the order of Gaussian pulses.

Abstract:A Gires-Tournois(GT) mirror with a group delay dispersion (GDD) of - 60 fs(2) in one reflection was designed according to the requirement of dispersion compensation in the Ti-sapphire femtosecond laser system. It was manufactured by ion assisted deposition combined with the optical monitoring in transmission. The reflectance of the mirror was measured by a spectrophometer working in the range from 650 nm to 950 nm with a resolution of 1 nm. The results were consistent with the design. Furthermore, a home-made white light interferometry system was employed to test the reflection GDD and the result also agreed well with the design. The experimental GDD oscillation was less than +/- 20 fs(2). The GT mirror was applied in the Ti-sapphire femtosecond laser system and a good clamping result was obtained. Finally a 29 fs ultra-short pulse was acquired.

Abstract:A new integrative optimization of three chirped mirrors for precise broadband intracavity group delay dispersion compensation in ring cavity is proposed. Simulation demonstrates that the residual group delay dispersion ripples of these three chirped mirrors are less than 25fs2 for most of the wavelengths from 600 to 1200nm. Pulse evolution simulation shows that these three matched chirped mirrors compensate the group delay dispersion in the Ti:Sapphire ring cavity laser well to obtain an octave-spanning spectrum.

Abstract:A novel technique of optimizing chirped mirrors is proposed. Simulation demonstrates that the residual group delay dispersion ripples of two matched chirped mirrors is less than 10 fs2 over the wavelength range of 700-1050 nm and that of three matched chirped mirrors is less than 15 fs2 over the same range. These kinds of chirped mirrors have precisely controlled group delay dispersion, which plays a critical role in the generation of ultrashort pulses and compression of few-cycle to monocycle femtosecond pulses.

Abstract:Photonic approaches for generating and transmitting dual-chirp waveforms has been extensively studied recently. In this paper, a simplified scheme to generate and transmit dual-chirp waveforms with elimination of the dispersion-induced power fading is proposed. An integrated dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) which consists of two sub-MZMs and a phase shifter (PS) is utilized. We apply an unmodulated microwave signal as well as a baseband chirped waveform to two RF ports of DPMZM respectively, in which carrier-suppressed modulations are implemented. Then we control the PS to suppress the power fading introduced by fiber transmission. Thanks to the use of DPMZM and convenient adjustment of a direct current (DC) voltage applied to PS, the proposed scheme owns a simple structure under the condition that it can produce dual-chirp waveforms with anti-chromatic dispersion transmission. Both theoretical derivation and experimental verification are performed. In the experiments, dual-chirp waveforms centered at 14 GHz and 20 GHz with a bandwidth of 1 GHz are successfully generated and transmitted through a roll of 20 km and 10 km single-mode fibers with elimination of power fading effects. The waveform power is increased by 8.2 dB, compared with those suffering from the power fading. Different DC voltages of 2.635 V and 6.877 V are set, respectively. Since the DC voltage that determines the phase shift is related to the fiber length and signal frequency, their relationships are demonstrated experimentally. The instantaneous bandwidth limitation of the dual-chirp waveform is discussed. The feasibility of the dual-chirp waveform transmitter for one-to-multi-transmission is also discussed.

Abstract:We present a novel photonic approach for generating switchable multi-format chirp waveforms with the capability of anti-chromatic dispersion transmission using a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). The key functions of the switching among up-, down-, or dual-chirp waveforms and the anti-dispersion transmission are both realized by controlling the bias voltage on the applied modulator. Experiments are conducted to demonstrate the generation and switching of chirp waveforms centered at 4.5 GHz and 4.8 GHz with a bandwidth rate of 0.4 GHz/ $\mu \text{s}$ under back-to-back condition. Besides, another experiment on the transmission of the generated 4.8-GHz signals along dispersive optical fiber is also demonstrated, which verifies the dispersion-induced power fading can be successfully eliminated.

Abstract:Dispersion compensation plays a key role in generation, amplification and propagation of femetosecond pulses. In the dispersive medium, the pulse can be broaden or compressed depending on the sign of chirp and dispersion. To obtain the ultrashort pulses, the pulse group delay (GD) should have about frequency independence after the dispersion compensation. Especially to compress a pulse to near the transform limit one should not only compensate the GD but also eliminate the high order dispersion term. In this chapter, we briefly review the calculation formulae and design rules of the various dispersive devices including grating and prism pairs and chirped mirrors. An integrative optimization of chirped mirror and its function in mode locked Ti:sapphire laser is described in details. Finally, a useful tool ─ dispersion map is introduced.

Abstract:In this paper, based on ray tracing, the approach of mutual compensation that introduced properly the negative third-order dispersion to balance the higher-order dispersion in the chirped pulse amplification (CPA) system with regenerative amplifier is presented. A shorter pulse with near-transform-limitation can be generated by this method than by the conventional approach that zeros the second- and the third-order dispersion successively in the CPA system.

Abstract:A chirped fiber grating (CFG) written by the moving fiber/phase mask scanning beam technique with a uniform mask is used to demonstrate the dispersion compensation in the externally modulated microwave/millimeter-wave over fiber system It is found that the use of the CFG is an efficient way to compensate for the severe RF power degradation induced by the fiber chromatic dispersion, which results in a significant improvement in the transmission performance. The signal to noise ratio is improved from 4.8 dB to 24.4 dB when 10.58 GHz RF signal carrying 5 Mbit/s QPSK format data is transmitted over 35 km single mode fiber.

Abstract:Two kinds of the negative dispersion mirrors(NDM1 and NDM2) with good performance were designed in this paper.They provided constant group delay dispersion over broadband wavelength.NDM1 employed both chirped effect and Gires-Tournois(G-T) effect to obtain large group delay dispersion of(-60 fs~2.) NDM2 employed G-T effect to obtain group delay dispersion of(-40 fs~2.) These designed mirrors can compensate the most dispersion of the Ti∶sapphire crystal and some chirp.These mirrors were fabricated by using ion beam sputtering.The reflectance of the fabricated mirrors was nearly as good as that of the designed mirrors.When these negative dispersion mirrors were used in a Ti∶sapphire laser,as short as 15 fs ultra-short pulse has been obtained.

Abstract:Low-dispersion mirrors (LDMs), which require a broad bandwidth, low dispersion, and high damage threshold, are essential optics in ultra-intense and ultra-short laser devices. Bragg mirrors and chirped LDMs do not satisfy these requirements simultaneously. We propose a novel LDM (NLDM) based on the hump-like structure and quarter wavelength optical thickness (QWOT) structure to achieve a broad bandwidth, smooth dispersion, and high robustness. The spectral and dispersion characteristics of the two structures compensate for each other, which makes up for the deficiency that the dispersion bandwidth of the sinusoidal modulation structure cannot be broadened. Based on this structure, the LDM can achieve a design bandwidth of 240 nm and support the transmission of sub-11-fs pulses. The accuracy of the NLDM is experimentally evaluated. The structure shows the potential for broad-spectrum laser damage performance due to the low electric field intensity. The NLDM improves the mirror performance and paves the way for a new generation of ultra-intense and ultra-short laser devices.
