Abstract:The fluorescence emission phenomena of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) have been discovered and characterized in recent decades. The amide, primary amine, and tertiary amine groups are present in PAMAM, which are not the traditional or typical fluorescence emission groups. The fluorescence emission groups or mechanism of PAMAM were yet not clear but cause cares. In this study, PAMAM was characterized using NMR (15N NMR, 13C NMR, 1H NMR, and N–H 2D NMR), IR, and MS. The results proved that amide resonance structures, corresponding to imidic acid and tertiary ammonium groups, existed in PAMAM. The new imidic acid and tertiary ammonium groups found in PAMAM might help explain the intrinsic-fluorescence phenomena.

Abstract:Quantum confined materials have been extensively studied for photoluminescent applications. Due to intrinsic limitations of low biocompatibility and challenging modulation, the utilization of conventional inorganic quantum confined photoluminescent materials in bio-imaging and bio-machine interface faces critical restrictions. Here, we present aromatic cyclo-dipeptides that dimerize into quantum dots, which serve as building blocks to further self-assemble into quantum confined supramolecular structures with diverse morphologies and photoluminescence properties. Especially, the emission can be tuned from the visible region to the near-infrared region (420 nm to 820 nm) by modulating the self-assembly process. Moreover, no obvious cytotoxic effect is observed for these nanostructures, and their utilization for in vivo imaging and as phosphors for light-emitting diodes is demonstrated. The data reveal that the morphologies and optical properties of the aromatic cyclodipeptide self-assemblies can be tuned, making them potential candidates for supramolecular quantum confined materials providing biocompatible alternatives for broad biomedical and opto-electric applications.

Abstract:Hyperbranched poly(amido amine) (h‐PAMAM) was synthesized from different feed ratios of diethylene triamine and methyl acrylate by the simple one‐pot and commercial synthesis method. Reaction procedures and products were intensively studied by FTIR, inherent viscosity and fluorescence techniques. The ill‐structured h‐PAMAM shared similar chemical and physical properties with well defined poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers in generation 2 or 3. Its strong fluorescence properties were influenced by pH values, solvents, concentrations, terminal groups and other factors.

Abstract:PAMAM G 2.0 was synthesized by divergent method with ethylenediamine as center core,methyl acrylate as branching monomer,and then a polyamidoamine-benzaldehyde dendrimer was prepared at 60 ℃ for 48 h with benzaldehyde as terminating monomer.Molecular structure of the polyamidoamine-benzaldehyde dendrimer was characterized by FTIR,~1HNMR and ~(13)CNMR with results comforming with the design.The dendrimer is soluble in chloroform but insoluble in water and cyclohexane.The fluorescent property of the dendrimer was studied.Fluorescence of polyamidoamine-benzaldehyde dendrimer is quenched by Fe~(3+) in the solution and a red shift from 436 nm to 458 nm is observed of the fluorescent emission peak.Fluorescence of polyamidoamine-benzaldehyde dendrimer is increased by Zn~(2+) in the solution and a blue shift from 436 nm to 402 nm of the fluorescent emission peak occurs at the same time.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers have attracted wide research attention owing to their unique topological structure, physicochemical properties and great potential for applications such asadditives, drug delivery, catalysts and nanotechnology. Among these, the polyamidoamine(PAMAM) dendrimers are some of the most important dendrimers. However, the synthesis and biomedical applications of fluorescent PAMAM dendrimers have received only limited attention. In this work, we present a rather effective and convenient approach for synthesis of fluorescent PAMAM dendrimers with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties through a one-pot catalyst-free Mannich reaction under rather mild experimental conditions (e.g., low reaction temperature, air atmosphere in the presence of water). The obtained AIE-active amphiphiles (PhE-PAD) could self-assemble into fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs). The obtained AIE-active FONs (PhE-PAD FONs) were fully characterized, and their successful construction was confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Fluorescence and UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy results demonstrated that the final PhE-PAD FONs showed strong yellow fluorescence, desirable photostability and good water dispersity. The cell viability evaluation and confocal laser scanning microscope imaging results suggested that PhE-PAD FONs possessed low cytotoxicity and excellent biocompatibility. Taken together, these results demonstrate that we have developed a facile and efficient strategy for the fabrication of AIE-active FONs, which possess many desirable features for biomedical applications.

Abstract:The fluorescence and aggregation behavior of poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers modified with phenyl groups at the periphery (PAMAM-P) were investigated. For comparison, the third generation (G3) PAMAM dendrimer with a shell of positive charge (PAMAM-PA) was also synthesized. PAMAM-P G3, G4 and G5 show dual fluorescence emission due to the fluorescence emission of phenyl ring and its excimer. By increasing the generation number from G2 to G4, the fluorescence intensity of phenyl ring decreases, and the fluorescence of phenyl excimer appears and becomes obvious. The three-dimensional geometry arrangement or dendrimer architecture was found to have a strong effect on their fluorescence behavior. This result is further supported by the solvent effect and model compound studies. The lower generations (PAMAM-P G0 to G3) were self-organized into spherical aggregates. However, no aggregation behavior was observed for the higher generations (>G3). The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) values measured by fluorescence spectroscopy were found to decrease gradually with increasing generation number from G0 to G3. Abstract:The steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) are used to study the electron injection from graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers. The PL is enhanced by depositing GQDs on the surfaces of the PAMAM dendrimers. The maximum enhancement of PL with a factor of 10.9 is achieved at a GQD concentration of 0.9 mg/ml. The dynamics of PL in the GQD/PAMAM composite are analyzed, evidencing the existence of electron injection. On the basis of Kelvin probe measurements, the electron injection from the GQDs to the PAMAM dendrimers is accounted for by the work function difference between them.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) based on through-space donor and acceptor interactions constitute a recent and promising approach to develop efficient TADF emitters. Novel TADF isomers using a dithia[3.3]-paracyclophane building block as a versatile 3D platform to promote through-space interactions are presented. Such a 3D platform allows to bring together the D and A units into close proximity and to probe the effect of their orientation, contact site and distance on their TADF emission properties. This study provides evidence that the dithia[3.3]paracyclophane core is a promising platform to control intramolecular through-space interactions and obtain an efficient TADF emission with short reverse-intersystem crossing (RISC) lifetimes. In addition, this study demonstrates that this design can tune the energy levels of the triplet states and leads to an upconversion from (CT)-C-3 to (LE)-L-3 that promotes faster and more efficient RISC to the (CT)-C-1 singlet state.

Abstract:Poly(amidoamine)(PAMAM) is one kind of dendrimer macromolecules which have widespread application.The average numbers of primary and tertiary amine groups in dendrimer materials were measured by acid-base titration.Therefore,it is one of the important assistance characterization methods used by the researchers for PAMAM synthesis.The detailed description of the theory of the method is clarified,which also includes why the hydrolysis of amido bond does not influence the results of the experiment.The results of our experiment indicate the core tertiary amines can be completely protonated at pH<2.

Abstract:Synthesis and photophysical properties of different generations of poly(ester-amine) dendrimers with focal 4-amino-N-benzylphthalimide (4-ANBP) as the core were studied. The lambda(abs)(max) of dendronized 4-ANBP was nonsensitive to the solvents used and located at 334 nm, while that of bare 4-ANBP was very sensitive. The fluorescence behaviors of dendronized 4-ANBPs showed much dependence on the generation of the dendrimers used and the media. As compared with bare 4-ANBP, the fluorescence intensity of 3 (G1.0), 5 (G2.0), 7 (G3.0), and 9 (G4.0) in methanol was reduced to 6.2-, 26-, 50-, and 56.5-fold, respectively, and had a 83 nm blue shift. The corresponding fluorescence quantum yields were also measured (4-ANBP-0.12, 3-0.017, 5-0.0042, 7-0.0028, 9-0.0016). Addition of sulfuric acid to the methanol solution of 9 (3.27 x 10(-5) M/L), resulted in a strong fluorescence, and the fluorescence intensity was amplified 181 times. Acid titration experiments showed that all of the tertiary amines in 3, 5, and 7 were protonated, but only 12 in 15 of the tertiary amines in G4.0 delta 9 were protonated. Repeated acid-base titrations caused the fluorescence to switch on and off. After many cycles of acid-base titration. Slight changes in fluorescence intensity were observed.

Abstract:Recently, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules with aggregation induced emission (AIE) features have attracted much attention. However, the relationships between basic molecular structures and photophysical properties are unclear and corresponding theoretical investigations to reveal the inner AIE and TADF mechanisms are highly desired. Herein, excited state properties of three TADF molecules (CBM-DMAC, 3CPyM-PXZ and CBM-PXZ) are theoretically studied both in solution (tetrahydrofuran (THF)) and solid phase, respectively. Solvent environment in THF is considered by polarizable continuum model (PCM) and the molecules in solid phase are investigated by a combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method. Luminescent properties are investigated by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations coupled with thermal vibration correction function (TVCF) method. Results show that asymmetrical molecules with donor(1)-acceptor-donor(2) (D1-A-D2) constructions are beneficial to obtain a small energy gap with well separated orbital distributions, and enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects are determined in solid phase, which confirm the TADF features. Furthermore, all studied molecules possess twisted molecular configurations, remarkable intermolecular C-H···π and C-H···O interactions can be observed in solid phase, which promotes the aggregation induced emission (AIE) and TADF properties. Moreover, geometrical changes between ground state (S0) and lowest singlet excited state (S1) states can be effectively hindered in solid phase, which brings the reduction of Huang-Rhys (HR) factor and reorganization energy compared with those in THF. Thus, non-radiative energy decay process is hindered and AIE mechanism is revealed. Our investigations are devoted to revealing the relationship between molecular structures and photophysical properties, AIE and TADF mechanisms are theoretically illustrated, which could facilitate the development of new efficient TADF emitters.

Abstract:Poly(amidoamine) dendrimers from the zeroth generation (G 0) to the fifth generation (G 5) bearing electron-donating chromophores, i.e. N, N-dimethylphenylamine (PA), carbazole (Cz) and pyrene (Py) chromophores have been synthesized. The macromolecular reactions of chromophoric modifications of PAMAM dendrimers were monitored by fluorescence spectroscopy. The reliability of fluorescence monitoring was confirmed by NMR spectroscopy. Compared with widely applied environment-sensitive fluorescence probe techniques, a distinct feature of the fluorescence monitoring was that it directly reflected the conversion of chemical bonds. A comparative study revealed that the fluorescence quenching of small molecular Py by the high generation dendrimers of PAMAM-PA was a static quenching process. The high generation dendrimers of PAMAM-Py possessed relatively compact Py shells as compared with the same generation PAMAM-PA. Electrochemical studies revealed an architectural transition occurring from an open and flexible structure to a closely packed globular structure between G 2 and G 3. The electron-donating ability of PAMAM-PA was affected by dendritic architectures.

Abstract:A dipolar dipicolinate derivative, trans-dimethyl-4-[4′-(N,N-diphenylamino)-styry1]-pyridin-2,6-dicarboxylate (P-1), and a P-1based V-shaped compound, {4-[(E)-2-(2,6-dimethoxycarbonylpyridin-4-yl) vinyl]}-N-phenyl-N-{4-[(E)-2-(2,6-dimethoxycarbonylpyridin-4-yl)vinylphenyl]}aniline (P-2), with intense two-photon fluorescence emission properties were systematically investigated by using steady-state absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, open-aperture Z-scans, and two-photon excited fluorescence (TPF). The two-photon absorption cross-section of the V-shaped compound P-2 in tetrahydrofuran (THF) was determined to be 208 GM, which represents a 6.5-fold enhancement compared with its dipolar counterpart P-1 (32 GM). Extension of the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the V-shaped dipicolinate derivative has been suggested as the mechanism of enhancement. The excited state dynamics from transient absorption spectroscopy were analyzed and discussed. The formation and relaxation lifetimes of the ICT state for these dipicolinate derivatives in THF solutions were found to be several picoseconds and several hundred picoseconds, respectively. The results show an increased ICT character of the V-shaped compound and a potential application for this compound in two-photon fluorescence imaging fields.

Abstract:Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties hold tremendous potential in biomedical sensing/imaging and telecommunications. In this study, a multiscale method combined with thermal vibration correlation function (TVCF) theory is used to investigate the photophysical properties of the novel TADF molecule CNPy-SPAC in toluene and crystal and amorphous states. In the crystal state, an increase in radiative rates and a decrease in nonradiative rates lead to AIE. Additionally, conformational isomerization effects result in significantly different luminescent efficiencies between the two crystal structures. Furthermore, the isomerization effect allows for the coexistence of three configurations in the amorphous state. Among them, the non-TADF quasi-axial (Qa) configuration may facilitate energy transfer to the TADF-characteristic quasi-equal/quasi-equal-H (Qe/Qe-H) configurations, enhancing AIE. Moreover, the Qa configuration enables rapid electron transport, offering the potential for self-doped devices. Our work elucidates a new mechanism for the isomerization effect in AIE-TADF molecules.

Abstract:PAMAM dendrimers of the zeroth to fifth generation (G0-5) have been peripherally modified with phenyl, naphthyl, pyrenyl, and dansyl chromophores. Their fluorescence behaviors are strongly affected by the dendritic architectures at different generations. These dendrimers modified with hydrophobic chromphores can self-organize into vesicular aggregates at the low generations G0-3 in water. The size and aggregation number of these vesicles decrease with increasing generation from G0 to G3. Critical aggregation concentration determined by fluorescence spectroscopy reveals that these aggregates can be favorably formed in the order of G3 > G2 > G1. In contrast to the vesicles made from traditional amphiphilic compounds, these dendrimer-based vesicles are very adhesive due to the H-bonding interaction and entanglement of dendritic branches located in the outer layer. A large number of multivesicle assemblies, i.e., "twins" and "quins" consisting of two and five vesicles, were clearly identifiable with transmission electron (TEM) and atomic force microscopy. For the dendrimers with peripheral pyrenyl chromophores, triangle-like vesicles were observed in water. The hydrophobic interphase thickness of the vesicular bilayer is ca. 2.0-3.2 nm determined by fluorescence resonance energy transfer methods, which agrees well with the thickness directly observed with TEM.

Abstract:Multifunctional thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules have recently attracted great attention. The light-emitting mechanisms of the TADF molecule PTZ-AQ with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) in three different aggregation states are studied using the combined quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method as well as the thermal vibration correlation function method. It is found that different aggregation patterns would induce different intermolecular interaction and molecular geometries. The different energy diagram of excited states also induce variation of emission colors and (reverse) intersystem crossing processes. By comparing with the light-emitting properties in solvent, the AIE property is confirmed, which is induced by enhanced radiative rate and decreased nonradiative rates in aggregation. The bicolor switch mechanism for the molecule in the solid state should have a close relationship with the dihedral angle change between the donor and the acceptor. The calculation results provide valuable information for understanding the light-emitting mechanism of the PTZ-AQ based polymorphs with AIE and MCL properties, which would favor the design of a new type multifunctional TADF molecules.
