Abstract:In this study, cross‐linked vesicles with nitrogen atoms are used as templates for the fabrication of silver nanoparticle (AgNP)‐decorated vesicles. AgNPs are prepared in situ on the vesicle membrane by the reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and the produced AgNP‐decorated vesicles exhibit good antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. Silver/polymeric vesicle composite nanoparticles with good antibacterial properties were fabricated in this study. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared in situ on cross‐linked vesicle membranes through the reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) via coordination bonding between the Ag+ ions and the nitrogen atoms on the vesicles. X‐ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy (UV‐vis), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses confirmed the formation of AgNPs on the vesicles. The antibacterial test demonstrated good antibacterial activity against both Gram‐negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and Gram‐positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) for the produced AgNP‐decorated vesicles. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the AgNP‐decorated vesicles for E. coli and S. aureus were 8.4 and 9.6 μg/mL, respectively. Cell viability analysis on the A549 cells indicated that the toxicity was low when the AgNP concentrations did not exceed the MIC values, and the wound healing test confirmed the good antibacterial properties of the AgNP‐decorated vesicles.

Preferential Facet of Nanocrystalline Silver Embedded in Polyethylene Oxide Nanocomposite and Its Antibiotic Behaviors

Abstract:In this article, a magnetron sputtering (MS) method is reported to prepare a nanocomposite of embedded silver nanoparticles in simultaneously polymerized, nonfouling polyethylene oxide (PEO) film. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the silver nanoparticles had tunable growth in the preferential (111) facet, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals that diameters of silver could also be controllable in the range of 5-10 nm by varying the processing parameters, such as the working pressure and the target-to-substrate distance. The antibacterial activities tests demonstrate that nanocrystalline silver in the Ag/PEO composite fabricated by this method has a markedly efficient effect.
Facile In Situ Preparation and In Vitro Antibacterial Activity of PDMAEMA-Based Silver-Bearing Copolymer Micelles

Abstract:Well-defined polymer micelles with core-shell structure are good delivery platform for stabilizing silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in the field of antimicrobials targeting diseases. The rational construction of the polymer structure, an efficient, facile, and green preparation approach, and comprehensive exploration of the derived AgNPs are necessary, such as size, particle stability, antibacterial activity, and other properties. Herein, we designed and assessed the in vitro antimicrobial activity of AgNPs-decorated copolymer micelles with different copolymer topologies. First, linear or four-arm star triblock copolymers with the similar molecular weight and degree of polymerization were obtained, which consisted of DMAEMA for in situ reduction of silver ions to form AgNPs without external reducing agent. HEMA and PEGMA in micellar shell gave an enhanced stability of AgNPs during blood circulation. The combination of computational modeling and experimental results indicated that both types of micelles could fabricate AgNPs with monodisperse and spherical morphology. Star copolymer micelles stabilized AgNPs had smaller average size, better stability, and higher antibacterial activity than those with linear structure, which may due to higher stability of micelles from star copolymers. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity evaluation test showed that the achieved linear or star copolymers micelles stabilized AgNPs had good biocompatibility. This work provides a facile and universal approach in the rational design of micelles stabilized AgNPs with suitable topology for fighting against a wide range of bacterial infections.
Surface Modification of Electrospun Polyethylenimine/Polyvinyl Alcohol Nanofibers Immobilized with Silver Nanoparticles for Potential Antibacterial Applications

Abstract:Objective: In order to investigate the potential biomedical applications of silver nanoparticle (Ag NP)-immobilized electrospun nanofibers with different surface functionalities. Methods: Silver nanoparticles were immobilized within water-stable electrospun polyethylenimine (PEI)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers by an in-situ reduction method after complexing Ag + . ions with the free PEI amine groups. The obtained Ag NP-incorporated PEI/PVA nanofibers were then hydroxylated, carboxylated, and acetylated to generate different surface functionalities. Different techniques were employed to characterize the Ag NP-containing nanofibers with different surface functionalities. Results: In vitro antibacterial activity tests show that Ag NP-containing nanofibrous mats have high antibacterial activity and are capable of inhibiting the growth of both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. Cell viability assay data show that the Ag NP-containing nanofibers are cytocompatible, and those treated by hydroxylation and acetylation display better cytocompatibility than those treated by carboxylation and the pristine non-modified fibers to promote cell adhesion and proliferation. Conclusion: Therefore, the hydroxylated or acetylated Ag NP-containing PEI/PVA nanofibers have a great potential for wound dressing, biological protection and tissue engineering applications.

Antibacterial Coatings of Biomedical Surfaces by Polydextran Aldehyde/Polyethylenimine Nanofibers.

Abstract:Hospital-acquired infections are predominately associated with bacteria colonization on the surfaces of medical devices and implants. To reduce such infection, we report a simple method for antibacterial coating of various surfaces (e.g., glasses and fabrics) at hospital site. As found, adhesive hydrogels made of polydextran aldehyde (PDA) and polyethylenimine (PEI) killed the three types of bacteria (E. coli, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa) with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) at 9.8, 3.5, and 4.5 mg/mL. Then the antibacterial surfaces of glasses and fabrics were obtained via coating them by electrospinning of PDA/PEI nanofibers for 30 min. After they were coated, the surfaces could completely suppress the growth of E. coli, S. aureus, and P. aeruginosa for up to 108 h of incubation, but they still maintained their cytocompatibility to fibroblasts. This surface coating is highly effective and long-acting, showing potential applicability in suppressing bacterial infections.
Synthesis of Polyethylenimine (PEI) Functionalized Silver Nanoparticles by a Hydrothermal Method and Their Antibacterial Activity Study.

Abstract:In this study, we report a facile, one-step hydrothermal method to synthesize PEI-functionalized Ag nanoparticles in which no extra reducing agent is needed and PEI serves as a reducing agent and a stabilizing agent. The obtained Ag colloids have been characterized by TEM, UV absorption spectra and laser particle size analyzer. We found that the size of Ag nanoparticles can be tuned through the alteration of the temperature and growth mode. Under an acidic condition, PEI-functionalized Ag nanoparticles are positively charged. More importantly, the Ag colloids exhibited stronger antibacterial activity in the bactericidal test. Its bactericidal efficiency exceeds the commonly used antibacterial agents such as Erythromycin, chloramphenicol and penicillin as well as AgNO3 solution. These results prove that our synthesis method is very efficient to produce a stable PEI-functionalized Ag colloid with excellent antibacterial activity.
Silver Nanoparticles Decorated Lipase-Sensitive Polyurethane Micelles for On-Demand Release of Silver Nanoparticles

Abstract:In order to improve the antibacterial activities while decrease the cytotoxity of silver nanoparticles, we prepared a novel nanocomposites composed of silver nanoparticles decorated lipase-sensitive polyurethane micelles (PUM-Ag) with MPEG brush on the surface. The nanocomposite was characterized by UV–vis, TEM and DLS. UV–vis and TEM demonstrated the formation of silver nanoparticles on PU micelles and the nanoassembly remained intact without the presence of lipase. The silver nanoparticles were protected by the polymer matrix and PEG brush which show good cytocompatibility to HUVEC cells and low hemolysis. Moreover, at the presence of lipase, the polymer matrix of nanocomposites is subject to degradation and the small silver nanoparticles were released as is shown by DLS and TEM. The MIC and MBC studies showed an enhanced toxicity of the nanocomposites to both gram negative and gram positive bacteria, i.e. E. coli and S. aureus, as the result of the degradation of polymer matrix by bacterial lipase. Therefore, the nanocomposites are biocompatible to mammalian cells cells which can also lead to activated smaller silver nanoparticles release at the presence of bacteria and subsequently enhanced inhibition of bacteria growth. The satisfactory selectivity for bacteria compared to HUVEC and RBCs make PUM-Ag a promising antibacterial nanomedicine in biomedical field.
The Preparation of Polymer/Silver Nanocomposites and Application as an Antibacterial Material

Abstract:An elegant and facile route for the preparation of polymer/silver nanocomposites for polymers having solubility in organic solvents has been developed. Aqueous colloidal solution of nano-silver has been used as the source of nano-silver particles. Nano-silver particles were transferred to the poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) solution in chloroform using phase transfer methodology. Separation of the aqueous phase gave solution of nano-silver/PMA in chloroform. The solution was coated onto glass substrate providing uniform film of antibacterial PMA/silver nanocomposite, thus exhibiting its potential application as a coating material. The same methodology has been successfully extended to prepare polyether sulphone/silver nanocomposites.
Fabrication of poly (styrene-acrylate)/silver nanoparticle-graphene oxide composite antibacterial by in situ Pickering emulsion polymerization

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets decorated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were easily synthesized by chemical reduction, and the prepared nanocomposite was then used as a stabilizer in the Pickering emulsion polymerization of poly (styrene-acrylate) to prepare PSA/AgNPs-GO composites. The AgNPs-GO nanocomposites were fully characterized by TEM, FTIR, Raman, SEM and XPS, which demonstrated that about 5-30 nm AgNPs with spherical, octahedral and cubic structures were decorated on the surface of wrinkled GO nanosheets. TEM photos and EDS spectrum of composites showed that the transparent GO nanosheets decorated with AgNPs were covered on the surface of PSA latexes and the AgNPs were uniformly dispersed on the surface of the PSA latexes without aggregation. The average diameter of composite latexes was obviously bigger than that of PSA latexes. However, the role of surfactant and the properties of hydrophilicity decreased the average diameter and WCA of composites while increasing the additions of AgNPs-GO nanocomposites. AFM images disclosed that wrinkled GO nanosheets decorated with AgNPs dispersed on the surface of composite films. XPS data proved clearly that silver was present only in metallic form and migration occurred during film-formation. TGA curves confirmed the composite film displayed better thermal stability than that of PSA. The results of antibacterial activity revealed that composite films had exhibited antibacterial properties against both E. coli and S. aureus, and the latter showed better antibacterial efficacy than the former. The nano-silver polyacrylate coatings with antibacterial activity explored in current work have wide application in the fields of wood coatings, leather finishing, and so on.
HIGH IMMOBILIZATION OF ANTIBACTERIAL MOIETIES ONTO MONODISPERSE MICROSPHERES BY DISPERSION POLYMERIZATION USING BICATIONIC VIOLOGEN SURFMER

Abstract:In order to achieve monodisperse particles with high content of antibacterial groups covalently bonded on surface, a bicationic viologen, N-hexyl-N′-(4-vinylbenzyl)-4,4′-bipyridinium bromide chloride (HVV) was devised as a surfmer in dispersion polymerization of styrene (St) using a mixture of methanol (or ethylene glycol) and water as media. Effects of content of HVV, its addition profile and composition of reaction media on particles size and incorporation of HVV moieties were mainly investigated. The attachment of silver and gold nanoparticles on particle surface under UV irradiation ascertained the surface-bonded HVV segments. SEM, TEM observations and XPS, zata potential measurements indicated that increase of initial HVV contents and addition of HVV (when polymerization had been performed for 3 h) led to grown particles and enhanced immobilization of HVV moieties. Using a mixture of ethylene glycol and water as reaction media, small particles (5202-142 nm) with highly attached HVV moieties were prepared. Furthermore, antibacterial efficacy of the resultant particles against S. aureus was assayed, and particles with more HVV moieties anchored on surface demonstrated greater efficiency of antibacterial activity.
Hyperbranched polymer nanofibrous membrane grafted with silver nanoparticles for dual antifouling and antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Abstract:In this study, a series of Ag-loaded hyperbranched polyethyleneimine/polyethersulfone (HPEI/PES) nanofibrous membranes were prepared via electrospinning. Hyperbranched polyethyleneimine was used as a dispersant and capping agent by the chelation of Ag ions by its internal imine groups and due to its highly branched structure. The nanofibrous membranes were characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), pure water flux and contact angle measurements. The SEM images revealed smooth, dense and uniform nanofibres with average diameters ranging from 107.8 ± 46.2 to 145.9 ± 49.9 nm. Spherical AgNPs with an average diameter of 6.4 ± 2.3 nm were observed. Characterisation using XRD coupled with selected area electron diffraction (SAED) confirmed that the AgNPs were crystalline with a peak corresponding to the (111) crystal lattice. The modified nanofibrous membranes displayed a high pure water flux of up to 630.14 ± 10.25 L/m2.h. The modified nanofibrous membranes displayed excellent antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa achieving an inhibition of growth rate (IR) ≥ 99%. It was also found that the modified nanofibrous membranes prevented the attachment and colonisation of the three bacterial species. The antifouling characteristics of the nanofibrous membranes were assessed by filtration of bovine serum albumin (BSA), a model foulant. An increased flux recovery ratio for the modified nanofibrous membranes (68.43–86.71%) was observed as compared to that of the pristine PES membrane (51.8%), showing that fouling resistance and bacterial growth inhibition could be improved simultaneously by integrating antifouling and antibacterial properties.

Abstract:Two types of facile approaches toward ultrafine Ag/polymer hybrid nanoparticles (NPs) within 10 nm are introduced. Template and in-situ formation method are developed by photoreduction based on inverse microemulsion (IME) polymerization of N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA). The template method refers to the usage of size-varied polymeric PDMAA NPs as templates for the preparation of Ag/PDMAA hybrids with desired morphology and optical property. To avoid the self-seeding nucleation of free Ag(+) in the solution, in-situ formation method is developed by introducing AgNO3 during IME polymerization, in which product hybrids could be obtained via autoprecipitation in large scale. Additionally, the produced Ag/PDMAA hybrids show high antibacterial performance.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles embedded on silica nanospheres were prepared by using ion-exchangeable poly( acrylic acid) ( PAAc) grafted on the silica surface as a soft template followed by chemical reduction. The prepared hybrid nanospheres were characterized using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy ( XPS), x-ray diffraction ( XRD), transmission electron microscopy ( TEM), ultraviolet-visible ( UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy, and bactericidal activity measurements. The results suggest that mono-dispersed Ag nanoparticles with controllable diameters can be obtained on the surface of silica nanospheres by varying the concentration of the silver nitrate and the pH value of the suspension, and the hybrid nanospheres have excellent bactericidal activity and potential applications as bactericidal agents in biomedical fields.
Silver Nanoparticles Reinforced (Poly-(L-lysine)/hyaluronic Acid) Free-Standing Films: the Mechanical Strength and Antibacterial Activity.

Abstract:Free-standing polyelectrolyte multilayer films which are composed of biomacromolecules, such as polysaccharides and/or polypeptides, have attracted numerous attentions in biomedical fields. However, the poor mechanical strength makes their future applications difficult. In the present work, we used the pH-amplified Poly-(l-lysine)/Hyaluronic acid (PLL/HA) film as the template and in situ synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in a green way. It was confirmed that the size of AgNPs in the films was largely dependent on the loading method of Ag+ (pre-complex vs. post-loading). Meanwhile, the loading amount of AgNPs and their distribution in the films could be controlled by the films outermost layer (PLL vs. HA) as observed under electron microscopies. The reduced AgNPs were used here as both bactericidal agent and mechanical reinforcer. The anti-bacterial activity of the films with AgNPs was verified by the Kirby-Bauer assay, and film cytotoxicity was examined by MTT examination. The effects of AgNPs' amount, size and distribution on the mechanical properties of films were evaluated by both nanoindentation and micro tensile tests. The films embedded with AgNPs of smaller size and well-distribution throughout the films gained the maximal enhancement on mechanical strength and preserved acceptable cytocompatibility. The in situ UV reduction of silver nanoparticles in polyelectrolyte multilayer films with controllable internal structures could provide a facile way to ensure the films with enhanced mechanical properties as well as effective anti-bacterial and normal-cell-supporting capabilities.
Perylenediimide/silver nanohybrids with visible-light photocatalysis enhanced antibacterial effect

Abstract:Bacterial infections cause severe threats to human health. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are promising antibacterial materials, but still confront poor colloidal stability and uncontrollable silver ion (Ag+) release. Here, a dye template strategy based on tunable perylenediimide (PDI) self-assembly is presented for constructing novel silver nanohybrids with visible-light photocatalysis enhanced antibacterial effect. Ultrasmall AgNPs are grown on diversiform topological PDI self-assembly-templates via in situ reduction to yield silver nanohybrids, achieving stable AgNPs dispersion. The developed fiber-like nanohybrids (BF@AgNPs) are endowed with photocatalytic ability by PDI nanofiber templates. Upon visible-light irradiation, BF@AgNPs generate reactive oxygen species via photocatalytic reaction, facilitating the AgNPs degradation to release Ag+ and concurrently exerting photocatalytic damage to bacteria. Consequently, the visible-light photocatalysis enhanced antibacterial effect of BF@AgNPs against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli is achieved via synergetic Ag+ release and photocatalytic performance. This work not only provides a versatile molecular assembly strategy for developing new powerful antibacterial materials, but also opens up a new way for dye functionalization.

Novel strategies for the preparation of nano-silver pectin sponge composite and its antibacterial properties

Abstract:Biodegradable sponges are currently attracting significant attention; however, the development of safe materials with high levels of antimicrobial activity remains a major challenge. Doping with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can effectively solve this problem. In this study, pectin sponges (PE-S) and nano-silver pectin sponges (PE-S/Ag) were synthesized in situ by using the freeze-drying method. The prepared sponge samples were then characterized with various tools. UV‒Vis spectroscopy was used to investigate the in situ synthesis of the AgNPs, FT-IR spectroscopy and XPS were used to investigate changes in the functional groups of the sponge samples, and SEM images were used to confirm the homogeneous distribution of AgNPs in the PE-S/Ag sponge. Our results suggested that the physical and chemical properties of the PE-S/Ag sponges were better than those of the PE-S sponges. The water absorption levels of the PE-S/Ag and PE-S sponges were three times and twice as high as that of gauze, respectively. Antibacterial tests showed that the minimum inhibitory concentrations of the PE-S/Ag sponge were 42 and 83 μg/mL against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , respectively. Cytotoxicity and coagulation assays showed that the two sponge samples were nontoxic to cells and had good coagulation effects. The silver ion (Ag + ) release assay was used to analyse the pattern of Ag + release from the PE-S/Ag sponges.

Abstract:The exploitation of high-performance antibacterial materials is of great importance for maintain public health and sustainable development of modern society. Here, we describe a facile approach for the preparation of conjugated microporous polymer hollow spheres (CMP1-HSs and CMP2-HSs) by using SiO2 nanoparticles as a template and 1,3,5-triethynybenzene and 3,7-dibromophenothiazin-5-ium, bromide for CMP2 and 1,3,5-triethynybenzene and 1,4-dibromobenzene for CMP1-HSs as building blocks via the Sonogashira-Hagihara cross-coupling reaction. The as-synthesized CMPs-HSs possess good thermal stability with a thermal decomposition temperature of up to 588 °C, high porosity (a BET specific surface area of approximately 556 m2 g−1) and a unique hollow spherical morphology with inner diameter of ca. 380 nm. Benefit from their intrinsic lipophilicity and hydrophobicity, the CMPs-HSs could act as a kind of 'micro-tank' which enable to capture and absorption of organics from water. Interestingly, the CMPs-HSs also show an antibacterial property with bromide. To further improve their antibacterial performance, silver nanoparticles were doped onto the CMPs-HSs (abbreviated as ). The as-resulted exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity both for gram-negative, e.g. Escherichia coli, The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of CMP1 is 15 μg mL−1 that is the growth of E. coli could be inhibited entirely after 3 h treatment. Taking advantages of their superior wettability, excellent absorption and separation ability, unique hollow spherical morphology makes much more accessible external surface area for doping Ag nanoparticles, such may hold great potentials as a kind of novel porous medium for organic pollution elimination, water treatment and antibacterial applications.

Abstract:Dialdehyde cellulose nanofibrils (DACNF) and Polyquaternium-10 (PQ: chloro-2-hydroxy-3-(trimethylamino) propyl polyethylene glycol cellulose) have become increasingly favored as antibacterial substances due to their advantageous characteristics. DACNF exhibits exceptional mechanical properties and biocompatibility, whereas PQ demonstrates a positive charge that enhances its antibacterial activity. Combined in a DACNF/PQ mixture, they provide an excellent template material for preparing and stabilizing ultra-fine (~ 10.3 nm) silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) at room temperature. Here, the dialdehyde group of DACNF functions as a reducing agent, while the quaternary ammonium of PQ and carboxylate groups of DACNF synergistically helped in-situ generation of AgNPs uniformly. The synthesized nanocomposites, namely PQ@AgNPs, AgNPs@DACNF, and AgNPs@DACNF/PQ, were subjected to comprehensive characterization using various advanced analytical techniques. The films containing AgNPs@DACNF and AgNPs@DACNF/PQ, fabricated via vacuum filtration, exhibited excellent mechanical properties of 9.78 ± 0.21 MPa, and demonstrated superior antibacterial activity against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Additionally, the silver ion leaching from the prepared composite films was well controlled. The fabricated nanocomposites also effectively inhibited bacterial biofilm formation. It was also found to be highly biocompatible and non-toxic to human skin fibroblast cells. Furthermore, the nanocomposites exhibited enhanced migration of human dermal fibroblasts, suggesting their potential in facilitating wound healing processes.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) conjugated with polymers are well-known for their powerful and effective antimicrobial properties. In particular, the incorporation of AgNPs in biocompatible catecholamine-based polymers, such as polydopamine (PDA), has recently shown promising antimicrobial activity, due to the synergistic effects of the AgNPs, silver(I) ions released and PDA. In this study, we generated AgNPs-PDA-patterned surfaces by localised electrochemical depositions, using a double potentiostatic method via scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM). This technique enabled the assessment of a wide parameter space in a high-throughput manner. The optimised electrodeposition process resulted in stable and homogeneously distributed AgNP-microspots, and their antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli was assessed using atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based force spectroscopy, in terms of bacterial adhesion and cell elasticity. We observed that the bacterial outer membrane underwent significant structural changes, when in close proximity to the AgNPs, namely increased hydrophilicity and stiffness loss. The spatially varied antimicrobial effect found experimentally was rationalised by numerical simulations of silver(I) concentration profiles.
