Abstract:Two compositions Ce0.50Zr0.39La0.04Y0.07O2−δ and Ce0.25Zr0.65La0.04Y0.06O2−δ based on ceria-zirconia solid solutions were prepared as nanopowders using a continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis reactor, followed by either freeze-drying or hotplate-drying of the slurry. Each dried nanopowder was then subjected to 10h heat-treatment at 1000°C, 1100°C or 1200°C in air (to simulate accelerated ageing). The reducibility and hydrogen consumption of the oxidised samples were measured using temperature programmed reduction (TPR) up to 1000°C. The effects of composition, drying method and heat-treatment temperature were evaluated on the TPR profiles of the materials. The powders were further investigated using a range of analytical methods including UV/Vis spectroscopy (which yielded colour data), Raman spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, BET surface area measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Chemometric methods were used to investigate relationships between the spectroscopic and total oxygen storage capacity (OSC) data. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to provide a simple interpretation of the effects of various synthesis and treatment parameters on Raman spectra. Principal component regression (PCR) was used to build regression models relating the Raman spectra and the temperature of hydrogen consumption peak at several set temperatures in the TPR. The total hydrogen consumption of the materials was generally high, while the drying and heat-treatment conditions appeared to have a significant effect on the final properties of the resulting powders, such as the surface area and total oxygen storage capacity.
Effect of Ce–Zr Mixed Oxides on the Thermal Stability of Transition Aluminas at Elevated Temperature

Abstract:Ce–Zr mixed oxides is a kind of promoted oxygen storage capability material widely used in three-way catalysts. Various contents (10, 20, 30 and 40%) of Ce–Zr were physically mixed into the pure γ-alumina for surface modification. The thermal stability of a series of Ce–Zr/Al2O3 supports was examined. Differential thermal analysis shows Ce–Zr mixed oxides increase the α-alumina transformation temperature up to 1222°C. The powder X-ray diffraction studies show that minor θ-alumina phase still exists in the samples with ≥20% Ce–Zr doping content after aging at 1050°C for 50h. The best stabilizing effect is observed in the case of 20% Ce–Zr/Al2O3. Even after the accelerated aging test, it maintains an acceptable specific surface area (24m2g−1) in relation with the delayed transformation of θ into α-alumina.

Abstract:To ameliorate the decay in heat storage performance of CaO-based materials with the number of CaO/CaCO3 heat storage cycles, in this study, we used the template method to fabricate CaO-based micrometre-sized tubular composites containing CaO, Al2O3, and CeO2 and analysed their performance at a high carbonation pressure. It was found that these composites, when doped with 2.5 wt% Al2O3 and 1 wt% CeO2, exhibited an excellent heat storage performance. The heat storage capacity of the novel composites decreased by only 2% over 30 heat storage cycles, and their effective conversion and energy density were as high as 0.92 and 2924 kJ/kg, respectively, after 30 cycles. Morphological analysis of these composites indicated the presence of porous microtubules with diameters in the range of 5–10 μm. Ca12Al14O33 and CeO2 grains in the microtube walls effectively stabilised the structure during cyclic heat storage. Therefore, the novel composites have promising applications in CaO/CaCO3-based heat storage processes.

Abstract:CoOx–CeO2 mixed oxides with increasing Co/(Ce+Co) atomic ratio (1–20mol%) are prepared by sol–gel method and characterized by means of by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and Hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR) techniques. The dynamic oxygen storage capacity (DOSC) is investigated by mass spectrometry with CO/O2 transient pulses. The powder XRD data following Rietveld refinement reveal that the solubility limit of cobalt oxides in the CeO2 was 5mol% based on Co/(Ce+Co). The lattice parameters have been observed to experience a decrease followed by an increase due to the influence of the maximum solubility limit of cobalt oxides in the CeO2. TPR analysis reveals that Co introduction into ceria strongly modifies the textual and structural properties, which influenced the oxygen handling properties. DOSC results reveal that Ce-based materials containing Co oxides with multiple valences contribute to the majority of DOSC. The kinetic analysis indicates that the calculated apparent kinetic parameters obey the compensation effect.

Abstract:An improved amorphous citric precursor method was used to synthesize Ce-Al-O mixed oxides. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, 27Al magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance, N2 adsorption, and oxygen storage capacity (OSC) measurement. There was a strong intergrowth interaction between CeO2 and γ-Al2O3 oxide crystallites during the synthesis, which influenced the microstructure and crystal growth of the two coexisting oxides and resulted in a high hydrothermal stability for γ-Al2O3. The OSC per unit mass of the Ce-Al-O system was 2–3 times higher than that of a single phase CeO2 with a nanocrystalline structure even after hydrothermal treatment at a high temperature. With a mechanical mixture, this improved OSC was not observed because there was no oxide crystallite intergrowth.

Abstract:The mechanical properties and the phase stability in yttria and ceria stabilized zirconia containing 0-20wt% A12O3 during aging in air (300°C) and in water vapor (150°C, 180°C, 200°C and 250°C) are investigated in this paper. It is found that water can greatly accelerate the degradation of Y-Ce-TZP. The addition of Al2O3 to Y-Ce-TZP prevents the low temperature degradation in air. Also Al2O3 particles can restrain the phase transformation of tetragonal to monoclinic in Y-Ce-TZP under water vapor condition when the temperature is below 200°C.

Abstract:The structural/textual characteristics and dynamic oxygen storage capacity (DOSC) of Fe0.1Ce0.9Ox and Fe0.1Ce0.6Zr0.3Ox samples prepared by sol–gel method are investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman, Hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and mass spectrometry with CO/O2 transient pulses. The dynamic oxygen storage capacity and rate are largely promoted by Fe doping, and their thermal stability is enhanced by Fe and Zr co-doping. The DOSC (at 673 K) are ordered as: Fresh: Fe0.1Ce0.6Zr0.3Ox (566.6 μmol/g) > Fe0.1Ce0.9Ox (551.8 μmol/g) > Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 (287.5 μmol/g) > CeO2 (140.3 μmol/g); Annealed1,173K: Fe0.1Ce0.6Zr0.3Ox (101.6 μmol/g) > Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 (45.3 μmol/g) > Fe0.1Ce0.9Ox (44.9 μmol/g) > CeO2 (43.3 μmol/g). The H2-TPR results showed that Fe-incorporation improve the total oxygen storage capacity (TOSC) of mixed oxide and low temperature activity. The TOSC are ordered as: Fe0.1Ce0.9Ox (1.53 mmol/g) > Fe0.1Ce0.6Zr0.3Ox (1.42 mmol/g) > Ce0.67Zr0.33O2 (1.16 mmol/g) > CeO2 (0.88 mmol/g). XRD and Raman results indicate that Fe0.1Ce0.9Ox and Fe0.1Ce0.6Zr0.3Ox are characterized with the fluorite-type cubic structure similar to CeO2. TPR and XPS analyses reveal that the introduction of Fe into ceria and ceria-zirconia mixed oxides strongly modified the structural and textural properties, which influenced the kinetics of bulk oxygen diffusion.

Abstract:The thermogravimetric analysis ( TGA) experiments were carried out to reveal the mechanism of Zr and Mn doping on catalytic activity of CeO 2 catalyst both fresh and after hydrothermal aging, and the lattice morphology and valence changes were characterized by means of Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and H 2 -temperature programmed reduction (H 2 -TPR). Density functional theory (DFT) and molecular thermodynamics calculations were applied to investigate the change in catalytic activity, crystal surface energy and crystal morphology caused by hydrothermal aging. The maximum reaction rate temperature of fresh Mn/CeO 2 (389 °C) is similar to that of CeO 2 (371 °C) and lower than that of Zr/CeO 2 (447 °C), but the catalytic performance of CeO 2 decreases more severely after hydrothermal aging. The catalyst crystals show different degrees of crystal surface migration after hydrothermal aging, which leads to the reduction of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ratio and the active sites shift. DFT calculations indicate that the doping of Zr and Mn reduces the surface energy of the low Miller indices surface and increases the oxygen vacancy formation energy, leading to better thermal stability and lower catalytic activity. The Zr and Mn doping also changes the adsorption energy and Gibbs free energy of H 2 O, which dominates the migration of (1 1 1) to (1 1 0) and (1 0 0) in the vapor environment. The crystal surface migration mechanism of CeO 2 catalysts doped with Zr and Mn induced by H 2 O molecules at high temperature obtained in this study can provide a valuable addition to the regeneration of CeO 2 catalysts in the after-treatment systems of diesel engines. Abstract:Herein, a three‐dimensional (3D) oxide fiber reinforced oxide matrix (oxide/oxide) composite was fabricated via slurry infiltration and sintering process. Subsequently, the effects of thermal aging on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the 3D oxide/oxide composite at 900 °C and 1100 °C were investigated. Experimental results indicated that the thermal aging affected the matrix microstructures and fiber/matrix interface. The elastic modulus of the matrix and interfacial shear strength increased with aging temperature and time. Aging treatment at 900 °C for 100 h and 300 h resulted in a moderate decrease in the flexural strength and fracture toughness but improved the delamination resistance, whereas that at 1100 °C for 100 h led to a significant decrease in the flexural strength and fracture toughness. The changes in mechanical properties might be attributed to matrix densification and enhanced interfacial bonding. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Commercially precipitated alloys are not suitable for application for temperatures below 250 °C. Higher temperatures lead to the dissolution and coarsening of the matrix precipitate, reducing the strength-to-weight ratio. Therefore, developing high-temperature (200-400 °C) alloys present a significant challenge. The present study focuses on investigating stability of Al-Ce-based alloys at high temperatures. Five near-eutectic alloys derived from the Al-Ce system, namely Al-12Ce, Al-12Ce-0.4 Mg, Al-12Ce-4Si, Al-12Ce-4Si-0.4 Mg, and Al-12Ce-4Si-0.4 Mg-0.25Sr, were analyzed to investigate coarsening resistance. To assess coarsening resistance, the alloys underwent heat treatment at 200-400 °C for 100 h of aging time. At a temperature between 200 °C and 400 °C, binary Al-Ce alloy exhibited superior coarsening resistance due to the presence of thermally stable Al 11 Ce 3 intermetallic phase. The addition of Si in the binary alloys increases the room temperature hardness by 9.8% and gives the emergence of the thermally stable AlCeSi intermetallic phase. The combined addition of Mg and Si to the binary alloys improved the Vickers hardness by 41.3%. The addition of 0.25% Sr in the Al-Ce-Si-Mg alloys refined the microstructure, reduced the aspect ratio of AlCeSi intermetallic, and improved the room temperature hardness level by 48.6% compared to base alloy. Al-Ce, Al-Ce-Mg, and Al-Ce-Si alloys show consistent hardness variation at a temperature range of 25-400 °C for 100 h of aging time, confirming its suitability for high-temperature application. The decrease in the hardness at 300 °C and 400 °C for Al-Ce-Si-Mg and Al-Ce-Si-Mg-Sr alloys was more significant after 10 h of aging time, limiting its suitability for high-temperature applications.

Abstract:High entropy oxide (HEO) is a new class of ceramic materials. It is well known for its unique microstructure and remarkable property. In this work, a multicomponent equiatomic Mn–Co–Ni–Al–Zn–O oxide was synthesized using a solid-state reaction route based on entropic engineering. The phase composition of the samples was investigated, which showed the formation of two main phases: Fm 3 ̅ m for the rock salt phase and Fd 3 ̅ m for the spinel phase. In addition, the electrical behavior of Mn–Co–Ni–Al–Zn–O ceramic was investigated. The 5-cation ceramic exhibits extremely high aging stability with a resistance drift of 0.27% under accelerated aging conditions at 125 °C for 500 h. In contrast, the aging drift rate of the 4-cation samples is at approximately 2%. It was found that the design of multicomponent equiatomic oxide brings a significant benefit to the aging stability of the material. Thus, it provides an opportunity to improve the aging stability.

Abstract:High temperature heat treatment is one of the critical steps in hot compression bonding (HCB), which was recently developed to scale up the fabrication of oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) alloys. Understanding the microstructural evolution during heat treatments is required to refine the fabrication process to produce large-scale homogeneous ODS alloys. In this study, the effect of high temperature thermal aging treatments at representative temperatures (1000 °C and 1200 °C, respectively) on the microstructural stability of a 9Cr ODS alloy was investigated. The results show that the microstructure is relatively stable during thermal aging at 1000 °C up to 500 h. Within 50 h of aging at 1200 °C, δ-ferrite appears and its content increases with aging time. However, δ-ferrite completely disappears and hexagonal TiO2 particles with the size of 1–3 μm are uniformly distributed in the matrix after aging for 200 h. The nano-sized oxide particles coarsen slightly at 1000 °C, and the average size is ∼4.3 nm after aging for 500 h, whereas, significant coarsening takes place at 1200 °C after aging for more than 20 h, and the particle size increased from 3.76 nm at 20 h to 6.22 nm at 200 h. Additionally, the average grain size grows obviously after aging to 200 h. These results indicate that the HCB and hot working processes of 9Cr ODS alloy should be less than 20 h at 1200 °C or kept at lower temperatures to maintain the stability of nano-sized oxide particles and the overall microstructure.

Effect of Sintering Temperature on Al2O3/TiAl Composite from Ti-Al-TiO2-Eu2O3 System

Abstract:In this work, the composites were fabricated by in-situ synthesis reaction and hot-pressing using Ti, Al, TiO2 and Eu2O3 as starting materials. Effects of the sintering temperature on the microstructures and properties of the Al2O3/TiAl composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and universal properties tests. The result shows that the sintering temperature had effect on improving the mechanical properties of TiAl composites. The phase of the composites composed of gamma-TiAl/alpha(2)-Ti3Al matrix and reinforcing phases of Al2O3 and EuAlO3. The grain size of composite was smaller than 0.5 mu m at 1200 degrees C. And the mechanical properties reached to the maximum value (477.96 MPa and 9.73 MPa.m(1/2)). The properties decreased with grain growth at 1300 degrees C.
Study of the effect of synthesis temperature and thermal aging on structural, dielectric properties and phase composition in NiO/NiAl2O4 composite ceramics

Abstract:In modern materials science, a considerable amount of research is focused on obtaining new ceramic materials to create efficient functional elements. Acquiring highly efficient and highly stable ceramic catalysts for alternative energy is an important task that demands an urgent solution. Addressing this issue promptly is essential as it will facilitate the development of new technologies that can prevent future energy crises. Nickel oxide NiO or spinels of NiAl2O4 composition are excellent candidates as high temperature catalysts used in alternative energy applications. This paper studies the synthesis of NiO/NiAl2O4 composite ceramics and the effect of high-temperature aging on their phase composition, crystalline properties, and dielectric characteristics. The study found that the phase composition and microstructure of the ceramics are unchanged by thermal aging (aged at 700 °C), while the crystalline parameters and low-frequency dielectric characteristics may undergo significant changes over time, exhibiting notable fluctuations depending on the duration of aging. The observed variations were predominantly influenced by the microstructural features of the composite ceramics. As the average grain size increased and the phase transformations were completed, the crystalline parameters and low-frequency dielectric characteristics reached a stable state without further alteration. For NiO/NiAl2O4 ceramics with a sintering temperature of 1500 °C, the highest shrinkage, low dielectric loss values and acceptable hardness were observed, indicating that the fabricated ceramics are suitable for mechanical processing. In general, the obtained composite ceramics show high temperature stability and are ready for use in hydrogen energy applications as functional elements.

Abstract:CaO-based materials are potential candidates for thermochemical energy storage in calcium looping (CaL) due to their low-cost and large theoretical heat storage capacity. The harsh energy storage mode can circumvent adopting the membrane separation techniques with uncertain availability, contributing to improve the practicability of CaL. Nevertheless, the high calcination temperature and CO2 partial pressure involved in harsh energy storage mode adversely affect the cyclic stability of CaO-based materials. Therefore, comparison investigation on cyclic stability of CaO-based composites with inert supports for energy storage under harsh mode (950 °C, pure CO2) was conducted. The single Zr-supported, CaO-based composite possesses the highest energy release density of 1.42 MJ/kg after 19 cycles, which is markedly higher than that of the single Al- or Zr/Al-supported CaO-based composites. The Fe/Mn-doped, Zr-supported CaO-based composites were further prepared aiming to achieve direct solar absorption in the CaL. Although the binary Fe/Mn ions doping causes the decreased energy release density due to consumption of active CaO, the optical adsorption capability is significantly enhanced. The dark composite with a molar ratio of Ca/Zr:Fe:Mn = 100:4:8 exhibits the highest spectral absorbance of 74.2%, which is approximately 5.8 times that of white Zr-supported CaO-based composite. It also possesses excellent energy storage/release stability with a low average energy release density loss of 0.005 MJ/kg per cycle during 19 cycles.

Abstract:The Ce-Mg-O complex compound with nano-size and high thermal stability was synthesized. The structure and typical property of the powder have been investigated by using TG-DTA, TEM, XRD, Raman and BET surface area technologies. The results indicated that the average crystalline size of the powder was from 10 to 20 nm, which led to the high surface area and good thermal stability and showed no agglomeration after 1000 °C calcination.

Abstract:Aluminum titanate (Al2TiO5)-mullite composites with excellent thermal shock resistance were studied. Aluminum titanate with a moderately high mechanical strength and a low thermal expansion coefficient was obtained by inhibiting grain growth by the addition of mullite. The composites were fabricated from mono-dispersed powders, produced by the stepwise alkoxide hydrolysis of tetraethylorthosilicate, Si(OC2H5)(4) and titanium tetraethoxide, Ti(OC2H5)(4), in an Al2O3 ethanolic colloidal suspension. Several thermal durability tests were performed: annealing tests at the critical decomposition temperature, 1100degreesC, for 100 h; cyclic thermal shock between 750degrees and 1400degreesC for 100 h; and water quenching from 950degrees to room temperature (RT). Changes in the microstructure, thermal expansion coefficient, and strength were determined. The composites with 70-80 vol% Al2TiO5 showed the best thermal durability, exemplified by little change in their microstructure during the thermal durability tests. The role of microcracks in thermal shock resistance, strength, Young's modulus, sound velocity, and thermal expansion coefficient is discussed here.
Effect of Fe2O3–TiO2-Sm2O3 composite additive on sintering behavior and thermal properties of Al2O3 ceramics for thermal storage

Abstract:Al2O3 ceramics were prepared by introducing Fe2O3–TiO2-Sm2O3 composite additive, in which the content and ratios of Fe2O3 and TiO2 remained constant, but Sm2O3 was variable. The phase transformation, micromorphology, physical properties and thermal properties were investigated. The results showed that Fe2O3 and TiO2 made the grains high sintering activity through a solid solution mechanism, which promoted grain growth, but Sm2O3 preferred to form SmFe4Al8O19 at the grain boundaries, which slowed grain growth and refined the grains. With the increase in Sm2O3, the grain refinement of SmFe4Al8O19 became outstanding, and the grain diameter gradually decreased, which is favorable for denser sintering. However, only a proper amount of Sm2O3 in the Fe2O3–TiO2-Sm2O3 composite additive resulted in better thermal shock resistance. The Al2O3 ceramics with 9 wt% Fe2O3-1 wt% TiO2-5 wt% Sm2O3 sintered at 1520 °C exhibited the optimum properties, yielding an increase in the bending strength by 6.60% after 30 thermal shocks, a thermal conductivity of 13.33–5.64 W/(m·K) (25–800 °C) and a specific heat capacity of 0.94–1.25 J/(g·K) (25–800 °C), all of which demonstrate the potential for thermal storage.

Abstract:CZO (CeO2-ZrO2) and CZYO (CeO2-ZrO2-Y2O3) series of mixed oxides were prepared by coprecipitaion, and a part of these oxides were loaded with precious metals (PM). XRD, BET, and oxygen storage capacity (OSC) investigations were performed on samples aged at 750, 900, and 1050 °C. It was observed that BET surface area and OSC showed a marked decrease in CeO2 aged at high temperature, and the crystallite size showed an obvious increase. The CZO samples consist of cubic- and tetragonal crystal phases, and their crystallite size increase rapidly when aged at high temperature. The CZYO samples consist of single crystal phase when the content of Y exceeds 0.15 mol, and their crystallite size increases slowly during high-temperature aging. It is concluded that additive Y can stabilize the performance of CZYO oxides. In the aged CZO and CZYO mixed-oxide systems, addition of a small amount of precious metals (Pt, Pd, Rh) increased the rate of reduction and led to an obvious improvement in OSC. OSC of CZO and CZYO with precious metals are related to their composition and the type of precious metal.

Abstract:This work presents the effect of CeO2 nanoparticles (CeO2–NPs) on Cu–50Ni–5Al alloys on morphological, microstructural, degradation, and electrochemical behavior at high temperatures. The samples obtained by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering were exposed to a molten eutectic mixture of Li2CO3–K2CO3 for 504 h. The degradation of the materials was analyzed using gravimetry measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Different characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, were used to investigate the phase composition, parameter lattice, and microstructure of Cu–Ni–Al alloys reinforced with CeO2–NPs. The hardness of the composite was also examined using the Vickers hardness test. Gravimetry measurements revealed that the sample with 1 wt.% CeO2–NPs presented the best response to degradation with a less drastic mass variation. Impedance analysis also revealed that by adding 1 wt.% CeO2–NPs, the impedance modulus increased, which is related to a lower porosity of the oxide film or a thicker oxide layer. The microhardness also significantly increased, incorporating 1 wt.% CeO2–NPs, which reduced with higher CeO2–NPs content, which is possibly associated with a more uniform distribution using 1 wt.% CeO2–NPs in the Cu–Ni–Al matrix that avoided the aggregation phenomenon.
