Abstract:We report on the development of an ultrafast Transmission Electron Microscope based on a laser-driven cold-field emission source. We first describe the instrument before reporting on numerical simulations of the laser-driven electron emission. These simulations predict the temporal and spectral properties of the femtosecond electron pulses generated in our ultrafast electron source. We then discuss the effects that contribute to the spatial, temporal and spectral broadening of these electron pulses during their propagation from the electron source to the sample and finally to the detectors of the electron microscope. The spectro-temporal properties are then characterized in an electron/photon cross-correlation experiment based on the detection of electron energy gains. We finally illustrate the potential of this instrument for ultrafast electron holography and ultrafast electron diffraction.

Abstract:The simulation optimization and an experimental demonstration of improved performances of mega-electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction (MeV UED) are reported in this paper. Using ultrashort high quality electron pulses from an S-band photocathode rf gun and a polycrystalline aluminum foil as the sample, we experimentally demonstrated an improved spatial resolution of MeV UED, in which the Debye-Scherrer rings of the (111) and (200) planes were clearly resolved. This result showed that MeV UED is capable to achieve an atomic level spatial resolution and a approximately 100 fs temporal resolution simultaneously, and will be a unique tool for ultrafast structural dynamics studies.
A kiloelectron-volt ultrafast electron micro-diffraction apparatus using low emittance semiconductor photocathodes

Abstract:We report the design and performance of a time-resolved electron diffraction apparatus capable of producing intense bunches with simultaneously single digit micron probe size, long coherence length, and $200$ fs rms time resolution. We measure the 5d (peak) beam brightness at the sample location in micro-diffraction mode to be $7 \times 10^{13} \ \mathrm{A}/\text{m}^2\text{-rad}^2$. To generate high brightness electron bunches, the system employs high efficiency, low emittance semiconductor photocathodes driven with a wavelength near the photoemission threshold at a repetition rate up to 250 kHz. We characterize spatial, temporal, and reciprocal space resolution of the apparatus. We perform proof-of-principle measurements of ultrafast heating in single crystal Au samples and compare experimental results with simulations that account for the effects of multiple-scattering.

Abstract:Since the discovery of electron-wave duality, electron scattering instrumentation has developed into a powerful array of techniques for revealing the atomic structure of matter. Beyond detecting local lattice variations in equilibrium structures with the highest possible spatial resolution, recent research efforts have been directed toward the long-sought-after dream of visualizing the dynamic evolution of matter in real time. The atomic behavior at ultrafast timescales carries critical information on phase transition and chemical reaction dynamics, the coupling of electronic and nuclear degrees of freedom in materials and molecules, and the correlation among structure, function, and previously hidden metastable or nonequilibrium states of matter. Ultrafast electron pulses play an essential role in this scientific endeavor, and their generation has been facilitated by rapid technical advances in both ultrafast laser and particle accelerator technologies. This review presents a summary of the noteworthy developments in this field in the last few decades. The physics and technology of ultrafast electron beams is presented with an emphasis on the figures of merit most relevant for ultrafast electron diffraction experiments. Recent developments in the generation, manipulation, and characterization of ultrashort electron beams aimed at improving the combined spatiotemporal resolution of these measurements are discussed. The fundamentals of electron scattering from atomic matter and the theoretical frameworks for retrieving dynamic structural information from solid-state and gas-phase samples is described. Essential experimental techniques and several landmark works that have applied these approaches are also highlighted to demonstrate the widening applicability of these methods. Ultrafast electron probes with ever-improving capabilities, combined with other complementary photon-based or spectroscopic approaches, hold tremendous potential for revolutionizing our ability to observe and understand energy and matter at atomic scales. https://doi.org/10.1103/RevModPhys.94.045004 © 2022 American Physical Society

Abstract:This chapter reviews the application of relativistic energy ultrashort electron beams to the direct investigation of structural changes in matter at atomic length scale with sub-picosecond (sub-ps) resolution by time-resolved electron diffraction ( electron diffraction (ED) ) time-resolved electron diffraction . There are many benefits of using higher-energy electron beams for time-resolved electron scattering instrumentation, due mainly to the space charge force suppression at relativistic energies, which enables more intense and shorter electron bunches. Speed-of-light probes, higher penetration, and shorter de Broglie wavelength are other advantages associated with MeV electron energy. The use of MeV beams for electron scattering demands excellent beam quality in both the transverse and longitudinal phase spaces, i. e., an exquisitely high six-dimensional ( six-dimensional (6-D) ) brightness. Expertise from the low-energy microscopy and diffraction community has converged with advances made in relativistic electron sources for high-energy particle accelerators and fourth-generation synchrotron light sources in the effort to create and deliver electron beams with these characteristics.

Abstract:We report ultrafast relativistic electron diffraction operating at the megahertz repetition rate where the electron beam is produced in a superconducting radio-frequency (rf) photoinjector. We show that the beam quality is sufficiently high to provide clear diffraction patterns from gold and aluminium samples. With the number of electrons, several orders of magnitude higher than that from a normal conducting photocathode rf gun, such high repetition rate ultrafast MeV electron diffraction may open up many new opportunities in ultrafast science.

Abstract:The generation and control of relativistic electron beams well suited for ultrafast electron diffraction application has rapidly advanced, greatly benefiting from the overlap in techniques and expertise with the accelerator community. However, imaging the diffracted MeV electrons with high detection efficiency has remained an under-explored area. In this paper, we report on a quantitative study of the imaging of MeV electrons using a detection system consisting of a phosphor screen, a lens-coupling optics, and a charge-coupled device camera. It is shown that every MeV electron in the beam yields a signal well above the camera noise. With this detection efficiency, only ∼105 electrons per pulse are needed to obtain a high quality single-shot diffraction pattern from a crystalline sample. We measured that such a low charge beam can be as short as 30 fs rms. Further, we discuss the possibility of compressing these electron beams to sub-5 fs rms bunch length by velocity bunching using a short high gradient rf accelerating structure scheduled to be installed next year at the UCLA Pegasus Laboratory. This opens the possibility of single-shot determinations of structural changes in many ultrafast physical processes like nonequilibrium phonon dynamics or relaxation pathways in systems with strong electron-phonon coupling.

Abstract:The ability to resolve the dynamics of matter on its native temporal and spatial scales constitutes a key challenge and convergent theme across chemistry, biology, and materials science. The last couple of decades have witnessed ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) emerge as one of the forefront techniques with the sensitivity to resolve atomic motions. Increasingly sophisticated UED instruments are being developed that are aimed at increasing the beam brightness in order to observe structural signatures, but so far they have been limited to low average current beams. Here we present the technical design and capabilities of the HiRES (High Repetition Rate Electron Scattering) instrument, which blends relativistic electrons and high repetition rates to achieve orders of magnitude improvement in average beam current compared to the existing state-of-the-art UED instruments. The setup utilizes a novel electron source to deliver femtosecond duration electron pulses at up to MHz repetition rates for UED experiments. We provide example cases of diffraction measurements on solid-state and gas-phase samples, including both micro- and nanodiffraction modes, which showcase the potential of the instrument for novel UED experiments.

Dynamical Diffraction of High-Energy Electrons Investigated by Focal Series Momentum-Resolved Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy at Atomic Resolution.

Abstract:We report a study of scattering dynamics in crystals employing momentum-resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy under varying illumination conditions. As we perform successive changes of the probe focus, multiple real-space signals are obtained in dependence of the shape of the incident electron wave. With support from extensive simulations, each signal is shown to be characterised by an optimum focus for which the contrast is maximum and which differs among different signals. For instance, a systematic focus mismatch is found between images formed by high-angle scattering, being sensitive to thickness and chemical composition, and the first moment in diffraction space, being sensitive to electric fields. It follows that a single recording at one specific probe focus is usually insufficient to characterise materials comprehensively. Most importantly, we demonstrate in experiment and simulation that the second moment μ20+μ02=〈p2〉 of the diffracted intensity exhibits a contrast maximum when the electron probe is focused at the top and bottom faces of the specimen, making the presented concept attractive for measuring local topography. Given the versatility of 〈p2〉, we furthermore present a detailed study of its large-angle convergence both analytically using the Mott scattering approach, and by dynamical simulations using the multislice algorithm including thermal diffuse scattering. Both approaches are in very good agreement and yield logarithmic divergence with increasing scattering angle.

Abstract:Herein, we propose a technique for megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction that can achieve a few-femtosecond time resolution. The technique modulates a relativistic electron beam using two radially polarized laser pulses of varying frequencies, which enable the condensation of the electrons into an ultrashort pulse. Moreover, our study shows that this technique can suppress the arrival-time jitter of the electron beam at the sample location. Numerical simulations show that using realistic laser parameters corresponding to the current gigawatt-power-level laser systems, a 3.3-fs (rms over 45% charge) electron beam can be obtained and the arrival-time jitter can be 1.35 fs (rms). This technique may have a considerable impact on ultrafast electron diffraction, microscopy, and other ultrafast research facilities that require few-femtosecond electron beams with a small time jitter.

Abstract:Ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) stands as a powerful technique for real-time observation of structural dynamics at the atomic level. In recent years, the use of MeV electrons from radio frequency guns has been widely adopted to take advantage of the relativistic suppression of the space charge effects that otherwise limit the temporal resolution of the technique. Nevertheless, there is not a clear choice for the optimal energy for a UED instrument. Scaling to beam energies higher than a few MeV does pose significant technical challenges, mainly related to the inherent increase in diffraction camera length associated with the smaller Bragg angles. In this study, we report a solution by using a compact post-sample magnetic optical system to magnify the diffraction pattern from a crystal Au sample illuminated by an 8.2 MeV electron beam. Our method employs, as one of the lenses of the optical system, a triplet of compact, high field gradients (>500 T/m), small-gap (3.5 mm) Halbach permanent magnet quadrupoles. Shifting the relative position of the quadrupoles, we demonstrate tuning the magnification by more than a factor of two, a 6× improvement in camera length, and reciprocal space resolution better than 0.1 Å-1 in agreement with beam transport simulations.

Abstract:Ultrafast electron probes are powerful tools, complementary to x-ray free-electron lasers, used to study structural dynamics in material, chemical, and biological sciences. High brightness, relativistic electron beams with femtosecond pulse duration can resolve details of the dynamic processes on atomic time and length scales. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory recently launched the Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) and microscopy Initiative aiming at developing the next generation ultrafast electron scattering instruments. As the first stage of the Initiative, a mega-electron-volt (MeV) UED system has been constructed and commissioned to serve ultrafast science experiments and instrumentation development. The system operates at 120-Hz repetition rate with outstanding performance. In this paper, we report on the SLAC MeV UED system and its performance, including the reciprocal space resolution, temporal resolution, and machine stability. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz)-based electron manipulation has recently been shown to hold tremendous promise as a technology for manipulating and driving the next-generation of compact ultrafast electron sources. Here, we demonstrate an ultrafast electron diffractometer with THz-driven pulse compression. The electron bunches from a conventional DC gun are compressed by a factor of 10 and reach a duration of ~180 fs (FWHM) with 10,000 electrons/pulse at a 1 kHz repetition rate. The resulting ultrafast electron source is used in a proof-of-principle experiment to probe the photoinduced dynamics of single-crystal silicon. The THz-compressed electron beams produce high-quality diffraction patterns and enable observation of the ultrafast structural dynamics with improved time resolution. These results validate the maturity of THz-driven ultrafast electron sources for use in precision applications.

Abstract:We present the design of a high repetition rate MeV energy ultrafast electron diffraction instrument based on a dc photoelectron gun and an superconducting rf (SRF) linac with multiple independently controlled accelerating and bunching cavities. The design is based on the existing Cornell photoinjector, which can readily be applied to the presented findings. Using particle tracking simulations in conjunction with multiobjective genetic algorithm optimization, we explore the smallest bunch lengths, emittance, and probe spot sizes achievable. We present results for both stroboscopic conditions (with single electrons per pulse) and with 105 electrons/bunch which may be suitable for single-shot diffraction images. In the stroboscopic case, the flexibility provided by the many-cavity bunching and acceleration allows for longitudinal phase space linearization without a higher harmonic field, providing sub-fs bunch lengths at the sample. Given low emittance photoemission conditions, these small bunch lengths can be maintained with probe transverse sizes at the single micron scale and below. In the case of 105 electrons per pulse, we simulate state-of-the-art 5D brightness conditions: rms bunch lengths of 10 fs with 3-nm normalized emittances, while now permitting repetition rates as high as 1.3 GHz. Abstract:Ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) is a powerful method for studying time-resolved structural changes. Currently, space-charge-induced temporal broadening prevents obtaining high-brightness electron pulses with sub-100 fs durations limiting the range of phenomena that can be studied with this technique. We review the state of the art of UED in this respect and propose a practical design for reflectron-based pulse compression that utilizes only electrostatic optics and has a tunable temporal focal point. Our simulation shows that this scheme is capable of compressing an electron pulse containing 100 000 electrons with 60:1 temporal compression ratio.

Abstract:Electron microscopy is probably the most demanding application for a high brightness electron source. This is because the electromagnetic lens is with both chromatic and spherical aberrations. Those lens imperfections put limits on the focusable electrons, which are required to, as much as possible, originate from a small area before spreading over a small angle as per unit velocity. Brightness and energy spread, two quantities closely related to such requirements, are therefore most important in predicting an achievable resolution for an electron optical system. A third crucial factor is stability, a general requirement from the perspective of commercial instruments, which must deliver guarantee-able performance in a repeatable manner. This work will introduce a nano-emitter which prevails over current electron sources in respect of the above-mentioned three qualities.

Abstract:We have demonstrated single-shot continuously time-resolved MeV ultrafast electron diffraction using a static single crystal gold sample. An MeV high density electron pulse was used to probe the sample and then streaked by an rf deflecting cavity. The single-shot, high quality, streaked diffraction pattern allowed structural information within several picoseconds to be continuously temporally resolved with an approximately 200 fs resolution. The temporal resolution can be straightforwardly improved to 100 fs by increasing the streaking strength. We foresee that this system would become a powerful tool for ultrafast structural dynamics studies.

Abstract:The conversion of light into usable chemical and mechanical energy is pivotal to several biological and chemical processes, many of which occur in solution. To understand the structure–function relationships mediating these processes, a technique with high spatial and temporal resolutions is required. Here, we report on the design and commissioning of a liquid-phase mega-electron-volt (MeV) ultrafast electron diffraction instrument for the study of structural dynamics in solution. Limitations posed by the shallow penetration depth of electrons and the resulting information loss due to multiple scattering and the technical challenge of delivering liquids to vacuum were overcome through the use of MeV electrons and a gas-accelerated thin liquid sheet jet.
