Abstract:Stochastic-resonance is experimentally demonstrated in optical bistability from an optical ring cavity containing three-level (A-type) rubidium atoms. The results obtained match well qualitatively with the theoretical predictions of the generic model for the SR phenomenon.

Abstract:The vibrational resonance phenomenon in a three-level atomic optical bistable system driven by two kinds of different frequency signals is investigated. By virtue of the method of the direct separation of fast and slow motions, the approximate analytical expression for the response amplitude Q at the low-frequency is obtained. It is found that the response amplitude presents a peak with the amplitude and frequency of the high-frequency signal varying, and it is identified as the characteristic signature of the vibrational resonance. Meanwhile, the position, at which the vibrational resonance occurs, is determined by the analytical expression of the response amplitude. The effects of the other parameters on vibrational resonance in the three-level atomic optical bistable system are also investigated. The mechanism of vibrational resonance phenomenon is given by the phase synchronization between the input and output signals. The numerical simulation and theoretic results are in basic agreement.

Abstract:The oscillation characteristics of populations in two orthogonal energy sub-states of semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs) excited by linearly polarized monochromatic pulse field were discussed. With rotating-wave approximation, the non-damped solutions of the dynamic population equations with resonance excitation were deduced. The effective transition dipole moments and effective input pulse area were introduced and their expressions were also given. Theoretical analysis showed that the amplitude and frequency of the population oscillation on the sub-states can be manipulated by adjusting the original conditions and the polarization angle of excitation field.

Abstract:The quantum interference and Rabi oscillation of a V-type three-level system with two orthogonal sub-states in an elongated semiconductor quantum dot are discussed theoretically with optical Bloch equations when the system is driven by pulse-pair. Numerical calculations from the optical Bloch equations reveal that the quantum interference in the system is enhanced with the increasing of the energy decay or splitting. Furthermore, the populations swapping in two orthogonal sub-states can be realized though the direct transition is prohibited.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the optical bistability (OB) and optical multistability (OM) phenomena within a V-type three-level atomic system interacting with two independent broadband squeezed baths confined in a unidirectional cavity. Our analysis reveals that the transition between OB and OM is influenced by the strength of the control field and the intensity of the squeezed vacuum. Notably, the impact of each of these factors on the transition exhibits distinct characteristics. Furthermore, we explore the effects of additional system parameters, such as the incoherent pumping rate and cooperation parameter. Our findings emphasize the crucial roles played by these parameters in shaping the observed results. Specifically, we observe that variations in the incoherent pumping rate and cooperation parameter contribute significantly to the system's OB and OM behavior, further underscoring the multifaceted nature of the studied atomic system. This comprehensive investigation not only elucidates the intricate interplay between key parameters but also unveils the sensitivity of the system to variations in control field strength, intensity of the squeezed vacuum, incoherent pumping rate, and cooperation parameter.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study on optical bistability (OB), optical multistability (OM), and all-optical switching in a four-level Y-type atomic system. The density matrix formalism is used to derive the Optical Bloch equations in order to find out the response of the probe laser field. The characteristics of OB and OM have been studied under unidirectional ring cavity configuration. The line parameters of D1 transition of 87Rb isotope have been used in the simulation. The system exhibits OM without consideration of any additional coherence effect like spontaneously generated coherence in the theoretical formalism. Threshold intensities and hysteresis widths of OB as well as OM can be effectively tuned by varying the intensity and frequency detuning of the coherent fields. Dynamic control of the probe laser pulse propagating through the medium has been investigated. We also demonstrate the conversion of a continuous wave input probe field into output switched pulse. The ON/OFF time of the switched probe pulse can also be controlled by tuning the field parameters. Such a system would be very useful in designing all-optical switching devices and optical storage devices.

Quantum resonant optical bistability with a narrow atomic transition: bistability phase diagram in the bad cavity regime

Abstract:We report on the observation of a novel manifestation of saturation-induced optical bistability in a resonantly pumped optical ring cavity interacting strongly with a cloud of atoms via a narrow atomic transition. The bistability emerges, above a critical pump rate, as an additional peak in the cavity's normal mode spectrum close to atomic resonance. This third transmission peak is usually suppressed due to strong resonant absorption, but in our experiment it is visible because of the linewidth of the atomic transition being much smaller than that of the cavity, which sets the experiment into the bad-cavity regime. Relying on complete saturation of the transition, this bistability has a quantum origin and cannot be mimicked by a classical material presenting a nonlinear refraction index. The appearance of the central peak in addition to the normal modes is predicted by a semi-classical model derived from the Tavis-Cummings Hamiltonian from which we derive a bistability phase diagram that connects our observations with former work on optical bistability in the good cavity regime. The phase diagram reveals several so far unexplored bistable phases.

Abstract:The optical bistability of a four-level system with triplet-state absorption typical of organic media is studied. We derive the state equation of optical bistability with triplet-state absorption. Different bistabilities with resonant absorption or dispersion of the triplet state are numerically discussed. The effects of the cooperativity parameter and the atomic- and cavity-detuning parameters on optical bistable behavior are analyzed. It is found that the hysteresis loops decrease with an increase of both the cooperativity parameter and the atomic-detuning parameter of the triplet state and that under some conditions reverse saturable-absorptive media can display bistability.

Abstract:Abstract The phenomenon of “dark resonances” is a well-known concept in quantum optics and laser spectroscopy. As a general rule, interactions involving in such a “dark state” lead to multiple quantum superposition states that interact coherently and are undesirable. In this paper, two types nonlinear interaction in an atomic cavity, namely the nested and cascaded interactions, are theoretically analyzed how the dark resonances form the dark state peak to modulate the vacuum Rabi splitting (VRS) and optical bistability (OB) behavior. In both the zero- and high order modes, there are four VRS peaks generated in the nested interaction and three in the cascade interaction. Dark resonance can modulate not only the peak number of VRS, but also the OB thresholds. It is found that dark state can determine the asymmetric OB distribution of nested type and symmetric OB distribution of cascade type. Besides that, the distinctive OB thresholds in two kinds of interaction also be studied. The observations not only conceptually extend the conventional “dark resonances” phenomenon, but also opens the door for a variety of new applications in tunable all-optical switch and quantum communication.

Abstract:Optical bistability (OB) of Rydberg atoms provides a new, to the best of our knowledge, platform for studying nonequilibrium physics and a potential resource for precision metrology. To date, the observation of Rydberg OB has been limited in free space. Here, we explore cavity-enhanced Rydberg OB with a thermal cesium vapor cell. The signal of Rydberg OB in a cavity is enhanced by more than one order of magnitude compared with that in free space. The slope of the phase transition signal at the critical point is enhanced more than 10 times that without the cavity, implying an enhancement of two orders of magnitude in the sensitivity for Rydberg-based sensing and metrology.

Abstract:We present non-linear dynamical features of two-photon double-cavity optical bistability exhibited by a three level ladder system in the mean field limit. The system exhibits a hump like feature in the lower branch of the bistable response, wherein a new region of instability develops. The system displays a range of dynamical features varying from normal stable switching, periodic self-pulsing to a period-doubling route to chaos. The inclusion of two competing cooperative atom-field couplings leads to such rich nonlinear dynamical behavior. We provide a domain map that clearly delineates the various regions of stability that will aid the realization of any desired dynamics. We also present bifurcation diagram and the associated supporting evidence that clearly identifies the period-doubling route to chaos, which occurs at low input light levels.

Abstract:We consider Feshbach resonance in an optical cavity where photons interact with atoms and molecules dispersively. From mean-field theory we obtain multiple fixed-point solutions, which is strongly related to the phenomenon of bistability. Adiabatic evolutions demonstrate hysteretic behaviors by varying pump-cavity detuning from opposite directions. We also use the quantum model to check mean-field results which match perfectly. The analysis here may enrich the study of particle-photon interaction systems.

Abstract:We demonstrated stochastic switching in a bistable system implemented with Rydberg atomic ensemble. The transition between the two states of the bistable system is driven by intensity noise of the laser beams. Rydberg atomic ensemble accumulates energy in an equilibrium situation and brings the nonlinear system across the threshold, where stochastic switching occurs between the two states. Measurement of Rydberg state's population by means of the ladder-type electromagnetically-induced transparency approaching relevant Rydberg state allows us to investigate the nonlinear behavior in Rydberg atomic ensemble based bistable system experimentally.

Abstract:Stochastic resonance is a phenomenon in which adding random noise to a system enhances the detection or transmission of a weak signal. It occurs when the noise interacts with the system's nonlinearity, thus improving signal-to-noise ratio and increasing sensitivity. Although parametric resonances in an atomic spinor Bose-Einstein condensate have been investigated, the question of whether one can observe stochastic resonance in such a system persists. In this study we propose a scheme for generating stochastic resonance in a cavity-spinor Bose-Einstein condensate coupling system. We demonstrate stochastic resonance through numerical calculations using the mean-field theory and truncated Wigner approximation methods. Furthermore, the characteristics of the system's response to noise and periodic signals are studied in detail. This study unravels a new scheme for observing stochastic resonance via linking atomic many-body physics with cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Abstract:We study thermal instability in NbN superconducting stripline resonators. The system exhibits extreme nonlinearity near a bifurcation, which separates a monostable zone and an astable one. The lifetime of the metastable state, which is locally stable in the monostable zone, is measure near the bifurcation and the results are compared with a theory. Near bifurcation, where the lifetime becomes relatively short, the system exhibits strong amplification of a weak input modulation signal. We find that the frequency bandwidth of this amplification mechanism is limited by the rate of thermal relaxation. When the frequency of the input modulation signal becomes comparable or larger than this rate the response of the system exhibits sub-harmonics of various orders.

Abstract:In a three-level atomic system coupled by two equal-amplitude laser fields with a frequency separation 2$\delta$, a weak probe field exhibits a multiple-peaked absorption spectrum with a constant peak separation $\delta$. The corresponding probe dispersion exhibits steep normal dispersion near the minimum absorption between the multiple absorption peaks, which leads to simultaneous slow group velocities for probe photons at multiple frequencies separated by $\delta$. We report an experimental study in such a bichromatically coupled three-level $\Lambda$ system in cold $^{87}$Rb atoms. The multiple-peaked probe absorption spectra under various experimental conditions have been observed and compared with the theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Randomly diffusing atoms confined in a dissipative optical lattice are illuminated by a weak probe of light. The probe transmission spectrum reveals directed atomic propagation that occurs perpendicular to the direction of probe beam propagation. Resonant enhancement of this directed propagation is observed as we vary the random photon scattering rate. We experimentally characterize this stochastic resonance as a function of probe intensity and lattice well depth. A simple model reveals how the probe-excited atomic density waves and optical pumping rates conspire to create directed atomic propagation within a randomly diffusing sample.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the atomic optical bistability (AOB) in a three-level Λ-type atomic system confined in a unidirectional optical ring cavity. The role of the intensity or detuning of the control field on AOB is explored, and results show that absorption, dispersion, and nonlinearity can be modified significantly by the control field due to quantum coherence and interference in multilevel atomic systems. Thus, tuning the intensity or detuning of the control field can manipulate the switch-up and switch-down thresholds, as well as the area of the bistable hysteresis loop. According to the controllability of AOB, we design various schemes to realize dynamical all-optical switching between the high and low outputs of two bistable curves for a fixed cavity input. In addition, dynamical all-optical memory switching can be implemented by adding a pulse sequence for the intensity or detuning of the control field. For appropriate parameters, such as the cooperative coefficient, the extinction ratio of the switching can be improved dramatically.

Abstract:We present a work of promoted optical nonreciprocity (ONR) in an asymmetrical cavity containing two asymmetrically arranged two-level atoms with a weak atom-atom interaction. The input-output relation is worked out by using a perturbative approach. Results show that the bistable-monostable-bistable phase transition would exist when the second atom is present, where the optical bistability and nonreciprocity change considerably. Contributions of two types of spatial asymmetries suggest that the ONR originates from the cooperation of the cavity spatial symmetry breaking and the optical nonlinearity, regardless of the atomic spatial symmetry breaking. In addition to the experimentally proved bistable ONR, a type of monostable ONR is proposed, which operates in the monostable phase. Both the ONR optimal regime and the block rate are boosted by adding the other atom in the cavity.
