Abstract:We report a structured illumination microscopy (SIM) reconstruction method based on polarization modulation (PM), which can suppress background noise by utilizing the polarization-sensitivity properties of fluorescent dipoles. The proposed method employs a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) spatial light modulator (SLM) to generate multidirectional interference patterns, and uses a combination of two liquid crystal variable phase retarders (LCVRs) and a quarter-wave plate (QWP) for flexible and rapid polarization modulation. The results of simulations and experiments demonstrate that the combination of SIM and PM effectively suppresses background noise in SIM with a slight improvement in resolution. This technique also solves the problem of structural distortion that occasionally exists in SIM and improves the accuracy of the reconstruction.
Effects of Wavelength on Polarization Correlated Imaging of Rough Surface Objects

Abstract:Correlated imaging is a research hotspot in recent years. It shows advantages over conventional optical imaging on scanning and imaging rate, noise immunity and so on, and has good application prospects in military electronic reconnaissance and other fields According to the basic principle of polarization correlation imaging, this paper established the spectral polarization BRDF model of rough surface. Taking two typical materials of aluminum alloy and PC plastic as target and background, the effects of wavelength on polarization correlated imaging of rough surface objects is analyzed. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the wavelength has little influence on the conventional correlated imaging, and the effects on the polarization correlated imaging appear in complex refractive index, linear polarization and contrast. The wavelength of the best imaging quality can be determined according to different material properties of the set target and the known background.

Abstract:Recently, the non-Hermitian optical system draws much attention due to their peculiar optical properties. In this paper, a non-parity-time symmetric muti-layer metasurface is proposed. The polarization-dependent unidirectional reflectionless (UR) effect associated with the exceptional point (EP) is investigated. By adjusting the geometric parameters of the metasurface, the EP based UR phenomenon can be observed at 2360 nm, and the simulation results are in good agreement with the theoretical work. Unlike other isotropic non-Hermitian platforms, the proposed UR phenomenon has a strong dependence on the incident polarization state, which guarantees its great application potential in the fields of near-field imaging and optical encryption, etc.

Abstract:Since the low contrast and lack of details in infrared imagery, a polarization imaging based enhancement method was proposed. Fusing the infrared polarization image and intensity image, this infrared image enhancement approach made the target areas prominent. Firstly, the polarization imaging theory was analyzed, and then polarization images were obtained using the polarization imaging technology. Secondly, the information of polarization images could be well acquired with the help of Shearlets based multi-scale image decomposition. Finally, the enhanced fused result was got with region feature matching. To test the effectiveness of this method, experimental device was built to get real images. Compared with original image, both the subjective and objective evaluation results indicate that the enhanced images have much more image details and polarization information, which is useful for target detection and recognition.

Abstract:Recently optical techniques have been applied to the biomedical areas such as diagnostics, imaging etc. However. light scattering in biological tissues can dramatically degrade the imaging contrast and reduce the probe depth. Polarization based measurement have shown its advantages in overcoming such drawbacks. In this work, we achieved a contrast enhancement in subsurface optical imaging by changing the incident polarization states between linear and circular polarizations. Contrasts of the comb like metal target submerged in Intralipid solutions are measured quantitatively as functions of the Intralipid concentration and the submersion depths. Different behaviors in contrast for linear and circular polarizations are compared. Contributions to the background of circular polarization degree images by backscattering. snake and diffusive photons are examined.

Abstract:Normally, Strehl ratio, resolution, and focus depth, the parameters that are used to evaluate the performance of an optical imaging system, are always calculated by scalar diffraction method. Considering the vectorial properties of light, especially when the system numerical aperture (NA) is high, the accuracy of scalar method can no longer fulfill the requirement of analysis. The variations of properties of these parameters accompanied by using of vectorial method are discussed. In order to describe the effects of polarization clearly, assuming a system with identical polarization state within the entrance pupil, by formula deduction and numerical simulation, we conclude that due to the influence of the polarization, the maximum intensity of system diffraction spot decreases, the resolution between image plane and parallel polarized orientation of incident light drops down, then the diffraction spot loses its circular symmetry, the focus depth changes slightly, and these effects becomes more apparent with the increase of system NA. Finally, the method of calculating the off-axis images is discussed in the paper.

Abstract:Circular polarization memory is a well-known phenomenon indicating that the circular polarization light can persist better its polarization property during propagating through turbid media compared with the linear polarization light. Therefore, in principle, using circularly polarized light can probably improve the quality of image recovery in dense turbid media than using the linearly polarized light. In this paper, we propose a new polarimetric image recovery method in dense turbid media with the illumination light of circular polarization, and we realize the image recovery combining the circular polarization information and linearly polarization information. The real-world experiment results demonstrate that the proposed method is more effective than previous methods, including the traditional polarimetric image recovery method by Schechner's [Appl. Opt.42, 511 (2003)] based on linear polarization.

Abstract:We experimentally study the propagation of circularly polarized light in the sub-diffusion regime by exploiting enhanced backscattering (EBS, also known as coherent backscattering) of light under low spatial coherence illumination. We demonstrate for the first time that circular polarization memory effect exists in EBS over a large range of scatterers' sizes in this regime. We show that EBS measurements under low spatial coherence illumination from the helicity preserving and orthogonal helicity channels cross over as the mean free pathlength of light in media varies, and that the cross point indicates the transition from multiple to double scattering in EBS of light.

Abstract:Wavefront shaping has revolutionized imaging deep in scattering media, being able to spatially and temporally refocus light through or inside the medium. However, wavefront shaping is not compatible yet with polarization-resolved microscopy given the need of polarizing optics to refocus light with a controlled polarization state. Here, we show that wavefront shaping is not only able to restore a focus, but it can also recover the injected polarization state without using any polarizing optics at the detection. This counter-intuitive effect occurs up to several transport mean free path thick samples, which exhibit a speckle with a completely scrambled state. Remarkably, an arbitrary rotation of the input polarization does not degrade the quality of the focus. This unsupervised re-polarization - out of the originally scrambled polarization state - paves the way for polarization-resolved structural microscopy at unprecedented depths. We exploit this phenomenon and demonstrate second harmonic generation (SHG) structural imaging of collagen fibers in tendon tissues behind a scattering medium.

Abstract:During optical clearing process, different microstructural features may show different polarization change. We simulated the tissue clearing process focusing on two type tissue anisotropy: the interstitial birefringence and the fibrous scatterers. Based on our previous research, in our simulations, we set up a sphere-cylinder birefringence model (SCBM) to mimic the anisotropic tissues, and employ the multiple clearing mechanisms mainly by refractive index matching, and supplemented by the alignment of the fibrous structures and the birefringence of the interstitial medium. It can be seen that the change regularity of depolarization and phase retardance along with the clearing is connected with the tissue modeling parameters, implying in what case the polarization contrast can be improved by clearing should be discussed. By comparing experiments and simulations, we examine how the polarization contrast changes with the clearing and what characters can be suitable for the polarization imaging applied in tissue clearing. © 2017 OSA.

Abstract:The orientation and wobbling behavior of the fluorescent dipoles are of great significance in revealing the structure and state of cells. Due to the poor optical sectioning capability of wide-field microscopy, the polarization modulation signals are susceptible to the neighboring fluorophores. The missing cone of wide field optical transfer function induces vast out-of-focus background, resulting in biased polarization orientation and decrease polarization factor. Here, we apply polarized structured illumination to achieve polarization modulation imaging with optical sectioning, and simultaneously measure the lipid polarity with two-color ratiometric imaging. Our results demonstrate a significant increase in measurement accuracy of not only the dipole orientations but also the wobbling behavior of the ensemble dipole. Compared to the conventional confocal polarization imaging, our method obtains an order-of-magnitude faster imaging speed, capturing the fast dynamics of subcellular structures in live cells.

Abstract:Highly reflective surfaces are notorious in the field of depth sensing and three-dimensional (3D) imaging because they can cause severe errors in perception of the depth. Despite recent progress in addressing this challenge, there are still no robust and error-free solutions. Here, we devise a polarization structured light 3D sensor for solving these problems, in which high-contrast-grating (HCG) vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are used to exploit the polarization property. We demonstrate accurate depth measurements of the reflective surfaces and objects behind them in various imaging situations. In addition, the absolute error and effective measurement range are measured to prove the applicability for a wide range of 3D applications. Our work innovatively combines polarization and depth information, opening the way for fully understanding and applying polarization properties in the 3D domain.

Abstract:We investigate the survival of circularly polarized light in random scattering media. The surprising persistence of this form of polarization has a known dependence on the size and refractive index of scattering particles, however a general description regarding polydisperse media is lacking. Through analysis of Mie theory, we present a means of calculating the magnitude of circular polarization memory in complex media, with total generality in the distribution of particle sizes and refractive indices. Quantification of this memory effect enables an alternate pathway towards recovering particle size distribution, based on measurements of diffusing circularly polarized light.

Abstract:Absorption effect is a basic optical phenomenon and an important feature in tissue imaging and characterization. Based on our Monte Carlo simulation on the anisotropic tissue model (sphere-cylinder birefringence model), combined with our experiments of tissue phantoms, we demonstrate the influence of absorption effect on Mueller matrix and particularly on depolarization, linear retardance, and diattenuation parameters. The simulation and experimental results show a good consistency on the suppressed depolarization and scatterering induced retardance, and the enhanced diattenuation caused by the absorption, and also indicate the birefringence induced retardance insensitive to the absorption. Study of the phase function of different incident polarized lights and the distribution of scattering number gives a preliminary explanation about the above results.

Abstract:A channeled polarization Raman microscope (CPRM) based on spectrally-modulated polarimetry is introduced. The CPRM modulates the polarization information into a spectrum by an achromatic quarter-wave plate, a high order retarder, and a linear polarizer. The linear Stokes parameters of Raman scattered light can be decoded from this spectrum by the Fourier transformation method (FTM). When compared with the traditional polarization Raman microscope, the proposed system removes the need of rotating the analyzer multiple times for the analysis of the polarization state, thus accelerating the data acquisition process. The feasibility and correctness of CPRM are validated by experiments, and the results of the instrument are shown in point and mapping spectroscopy modes. The results on polypropylene fiber and tooth samples confirm CPRM's abilities to characterize molecular orientation and enhance image contrast.

Abstract:Polarization light microscopes are powerful tools for probing molecular order and orientation in birefringent materials. While a number of polarization microscopy techniques are available to access steady-state properties of birefringent samples, quantitative measurements of the molecular orientation dynamics on the millisecond time scale have remained a challenge. We propose polarized shearing interference microscopy (PSIM), a single-shot quantitative polarization imaging method, for extracting the retardance and orientation angle of the laser beam transmitting through optically anisotropic specimens with complex structures. The measurement accuracy and imaging performance of PSIM are validated by imaging a birefringent resolution target and a bovine tendon specimen. We demonstrate that PSIM can quantify the dynamics of a flowing lyotropic chromonic liquid crystal in a microfluidic channel at an imaging speed of 506 frames per second (only limited by the camera frame rate), with a field-of-view of up to 350 × 350 μm2 and a diffraction-limit spatial resolution of ~2 μm. We envision that PSIM will find a broad range of applications in quantitative material characterization under dynamical conditions.
