Abstract:We present a scalable droplet generator with capillaries embedded in a microchannel, assembled with 3D printed T-connector and fittings. We first analyze the influences of geometric and operating parameters on droplet characteristics using a high-speed camera in a single-capillary device. We then scale up the device by parallel arranging three capillaries with axial misalignment to mitigate the interaction between droplets, which addresses the limitations of droplet productivity. We classify the droplets formed in the three-capillary device into different size distribution intervals and elucidate the underlying mechanism, enabling the manipulation of high-frequency generation of tiny droplets. At a velocity ratio of 12.0, the droplet generation frequency reaches 1260 Hz, in which the similar to 30 mu m droplets account for a large proportion of 65 %. Our low-cost and fast-fabricated capillary embedded devices have a high potential for producing high-throughput tiny droplets and handling liquid-liquid reactions requiring precise control of droplet size.

Abstract:We proposed a new flow-focusing technique for generation of monodisperse femtoliter droplets, based on the capillary micro-cross. A funnel-shaped interface of two phase system is observed in a capillary cross for mass production of uniform drops, where a tapered exit orifice is extruded into the dispersed feeding capillary. The droplets, down to 2 μm in size at frequency of 20 kHz, are controllable in size when choosing orifice and capillary sizes, as well as flow rates of inner and outer fluids. For a specific diameter of exit orifice, there is a maximal flow rate of outer fluid, beyond which the interface will be penetrated. Until then, the interface is in steady state and all droplets are highly uniform (<3%), implicating an absolute instability in the whole process.

Abstract:Fabrication of micro-devices for small bubble and droplet generation is usually tedious or costly. Here we present a simple capillary-assembled micro-device by modifying the capillary embedded step T-junction microchannel. Besides a capillary in the side channel, another same size capillary is placed at the downstream of T-junction. The two vertically embedded capillaries inherently guarantee the device symmetry by forming an arch orifice. And it could be applied to both L/L and G/L micro-dispersion with focused continuous phase flows. Monodispersed small bubbles of 35 mu m (CV = 3.52%) and droplets of 15 mu m (CV = 2.12%) are generated with stable flow-focusing jetting regime, by thin jets deriving from the large interface and arch orifice in the device. A general bubble and droplet size scaling law is obtained, and it could predict the bubble and droplet size very well. The device could provide a more convenient approach for adjusting bubble and droplet sizes than usual methods. The device shows its significant advantages of easy assembly, low cost and high versatility for both small bubble and droplet generation. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The efficient generation of monodispersed droplets holds great promise for micro-/nanoparticle synthesis and biochemical analysis. However, it remains a challenge to achieve high-throughput generation of monodispersed droplets in a portable and/or parallel manner in nonexpert biomedical laboratories. Herein, a versatile microchannel array (mu CA) device is reported that is portable, multifaceted, reliable, and mass-manufacturable, supporting the high-throughput generation of monodispersed droplets in different ways. This device consists of a silicon-based mu CA chip based on the step emulsification principle, as well as two matching plastic containers, both of which can be mass-manufactured by traditional microfabrication methods at low material costs. With the mu CA device, aqueous solution can be dispersed into emulsion droplets by various modes, such as mechanical pump-based large-scale, handheld syringe-based portable, and gas pump-based highly parallel droplet generation. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that our cost-effective device can be applied for digital polymerase chain reaction analysis, supporting the need for more accessible microfluidic systems. Thus, the present device is expected to have a significant impact on both benchside and bedside applications. A versatile microchannel array device that is portable, multifaceted, reliable, and mass-manufacturable, supports the high-throughput generation of monodispersed droplets in different ways, which provides a versatile droplet platform for a myriad of different applications.image (c) 2024 WILEY-VCH GmbH

Abstract:This work focuses on the dispersion of micromonodispersed droplets and bubbles in the capillary embedded T-junction microfluidic devices. The effects of the microchannel structure, operating conditions, and physical properties on the dispersion rules were carefully investigated. It was found that the extended capillary could greatly affect the dispersion rules, which was favorable for reducing the dispersed size. The dispersed size was mainly dominated by the Ca number, and the effects of dispersed phase flow rate and viscosity ratio of the two phases were also very important. The dispersion mechanism and size rules in the capillary embedded microfluidic devices were discussed seriously by comparing the similarities and differences of the liquid/liquid and gas/liquid dispersion processes. Abstract:In this work, the droplet generation mechanism was comprehensively studied in a modified step T-junction microfluidic device over a wide range of continuous-to-dispersed viscosity ratio. Different surfactant concentrations were utilized to investigate the effect of interfacial tension on the emulsification. Depending on the flow conditions, the droplet generation in the modified step T-junction microchannel can be categorized into dripping, stable narrowing jetting and unstable narrowing jetting regime, where highly monodisperse micro-droplets were observed in the first two regime. The effects of interfacial tension and dispersed liquid viscosity on the micro-droplet generation, notably on the transition from stable to unstable narrowing jetting regimes, were investigated in details. Numerical simulations were conducted to deepen the understanding on the physics behind it. Overall, this work aims to provide a comprehensive guidance for the generation of monodisperse micro-droplets with highly viscous liquids, which is insightful for the fabrication of functional materials in diverse fields.

Abstract:Jetting dispensers are widely used in technical fields for their fast and accurate distribution of fluid substances in small volumes.Aiming at an efficient and stable inker for wafer die marking,governing equations of fluid dynamics are set and numerical simulations are presented by finite volume method,to trace the generation and seperation of droplets through a jetting nozzle with the inner diameter of 0.1 mm.A jetting dispenser actuated by voice coil motor is developed and key factors are discussed.According to the results,this non-contact dispenser is capable of defective wafer die marking in dotting efficiency,uniformity and cleanness.
Preparation of Highly Monodisperse Droplet in a T‐junction Microfluidic Device

Abstract:In our previous work, a new flow route was developed-a so-called perpendicular shear force-induced droplet formation-in a self-designed simple T-junction microchannel device. In this work, the crossflowing rupture technique was used to prepare monodisperse droplets in a similar device and successfully prepared monodisperse droplets ranging from 50 to 500 mu m with polydispersity index (sigma) values of < 2%. Two kinds of flow patterns of plug flow and drop flow in the T-junction microchannels could be formed. By changes in the surfactant concentration, the interfacial tension and the wetting ability varied, and the disordered or ordered two-phase flow patterns could be controlled. Evolutions of the contact angle of the oil in contact with the wall surface were explained by the adsorption of surfactant molecules to the solid-liquid interface. The increase of continuous phase flow rate and viscosity resulted in the decrease of the droplet size, and the droplet size was correlated with capillary number Ca. By comparing the variation range of drop size using the two methods, it was found that the method of perpendicular flow-induced droplet formation can control the drop size over a much wider range. Droplet Pattern Formation and Translation in New Microfluidic Flow-Focusing Devices

Abstract:We conducted experiments on specially designed microfluidic chips that generate droplets through a microfluidic flow-focusing approach. The fluid flow in the microfluidic channel produced a shear flow field at low Reynolds numbers. The droplets in the microfluidic system exhibited special droplet pattern formations similar to periodic crystal-like lattices because of the competition between shear forces and surface tension. By adjusting the flow rate ratio of the water (droplet phase) to oil (continuous phase) phases and changing the outlet channel widths, the droplets formed monolayer dispersion to double-layer formation to monolayer squeezing when the outlet channel widths were 250 or 300 mu m. We also obtained droplets with monolayer dispersion, three-layer arrangements, double-layer squeezing, and monolayer squeezing when the outlet channel width was 350 mu m. The outlet channel width was increased to 400 mu m, and four-layer arrangements were observed. We also studied the translation of droplet formation, which resulted in a detailed strategy to control drop size and droplet pattern formation for emulsification in microfluidic devices. We expect that our strategy can provide theoretical guidance to synthesize dispersion or polydisperse colloid particles.

Abstract:This work introduces a microfluidic method for the generation of monodispersed microdroplets by using temperature controlled bubble condensation processes. In this method, the dispersed phase is first vaporized in the feeding pipe and ruptured to monodispersed bubbles in a coflowing stream. These bubbles are then condensed in the downstream pipe, where monodispersed microdroplets are obtained. This method ensures the narrow distribution of droplet diameters and prepares microdroplets less than 200 mm in sub-millimeter fluidic devices.

Abstract:Microfluidic technologies are reliable methods to obtain uniform and tiny droplets, but their application is limited by the capacity of single microchannel and the difficulty in fabrication and operation of large amounts of parallel droplet generators. Here, we reported a microchannel device equipped with multiple capillaries for rupturing the dispersed fluid, which realized droplet generation frequency up to 40 kHz in a single microchannel. The microchannel was operated under jetting flow, which was robust for controlling the droplet size uniformity; therefore, the device did not need highly precise machinery and accurate installation during fabrication. 30–100 μm droplets with CV <5% were successfully prepared in a 20-capillary embedded microchannel device with high throughput, verifying the effectiveness of improving the working ability of micro-channel unit in the scale-up of microfluidic device.

Abstract:The understanding of microdroplet formation characteristics in unconfined T-junction microchannels is relatively weak. Accordingly, an unconfined step T-junction microdevice was specially designed and fabricated to systematically investigate the droplet formation mechanism. A new flow named pseudo-squeezing flow is defined. A liquid-liquid flow pattern map including the pseudo-squeezing, dripping, and jetting flow in the unconfined T-junction is plotted, which shows that a much higher capillary number is needed to realize the flow regime transformation when compared with the confined T-junction. The unconfined T-junction could provide a much wider dripping flow regime, and generate monodispersed smaller droplets. Besides, the droplet diameter decreases with the continuous phase flow rate in the pseudo-squeezing and dripping flow but suddenly increases when the flow regime transfers from dripping to jetting. Importantly, the very short liquid plug can be easily formed in this unconfined T-junction. Finally, because of the same formation mechanism, the droplet size in pseudo-squeezing and dripping flow can be perfectly scaled with a same dimensionless model. This work could be the first comprehensive study of the droplet formation in three flow regimes in the unconfined T-junction.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid microdispersion is one of the key foundations for chemical process intensification. However, liquidliquid microdispersion at the conditions of high phase ratio and high volume flow rate remains a problem and new microdispersion technology is highly required. Based on the microscale effect of the liquid jet, we developed the micro-capillary jetting technology. It can produce microdroplets (250-500 mu m) with narrow size distribution (CV approximate to 10-20 %) in a wide range of physical properties with large capacity and little cost without the restriction of phase ratio. This paper reports the laws of the micro-capillary jetting technology. The liquid-liquid flow patterns and mechanism are studied, and a precise quantitative model to distinguish different jetting patterns is provided for the first time based on the energy analysis in the microscale. Then important factors including physical properties, dispersion mode and structural parameters are investigated. Accordingly, a mathematical model for the prediction of the average droplet size is established and the energy utilization in the jetting dispersion process is calculated.

Abstract:An open-type co-flow microfluidic technique that allows simple microflow manipulation with a broad operation range of flow rates for controllably producing uniform droplets with widely adjustable sizes is developed. The microfluidic device employs a co-flow geometry with relatively open shearing space to largely reduce the pressure drop in the microchannel to facilitate the flow of liquids. Such a device significantly extends the operation window of the dripping regime and eliminates the back flow, to benefit easy microflow manipulation with broadly adjustable flow rates for producing monodisperse droplets with widely tunable sizes. Typically, at We(d) = 0.0028, the operation window of the dripping regime and adjustable range of flow rates for this device are both at least similar to 3 times wider than those of traditional co-flow devices with confined shearing space for droplet generation. This work provides a facile microfluidic platform with simple flow manipulation and a wide operation range for the wide-scale impact of droplet microfluidics.

Abstract:A polydimethylsiloxane microchip consisting of a T-junction microchannel network and a thin glass capillary has been developed for the generation of microbubbles. The glass capillary is used to produce an ultrathin gas jet and to controllably block the straight liquid channel, thereby increasing the local liquid velocity near the intersection. Liquid flow rate, liquid viscosity, gas pressure, and inner diameter of the gas jet are varied to investigate the effect on bubble generation. Bubbles with a diameter down to 4.5 μm can be produced at a high rate of 7.5 kHz using a capillary with an inner diameter of 2 μm.

Abstract:A novel micronozzle array with grooves was specially designed for high-throughput microdroplet generation and high-efficiency mixing of heterogeneous systems without surfactants. The microgrooves, with a width of 25 ?m between micropores, could significantly prevent the dispersed phase from spreading on the membrane surface and reduce the microdroplet size and polydispersity at sufficiently high fluxes of the dispersed phase. Through different oil?water systems, the effects of flow conditions, system physical properties, and flow patterns on droplet size were investigated in the micronozzle array device. Under the jetting flow pattern, the n-hexane, dichloromethane, and ethyl acetate droplets could obtain average diameters of 35 ?m, 31 ?m, and 24 ?m, respectively, and the coefficient of variation was between 20% and 40%. The dripping and jetting flow regions were demarcated to fully understand the transition of the flow pattern. Furthermore, a droplet size prediction model was established based on force equilibrium. The micronozzle array proposed in this work has great potential for future practical applications.

Abstract:Due to its unique advantages such as monodispersity and high throughput, droplet microfluidics has been widely used to generate diverse droplets/particles that have specific structures. Herein, we implemented Janus droplet parallel arrangements in a flow-focusing microchip through regulating corresponding fluid flow rates. Initially, fluorescence dye and PBS buffer solution kept laminar flow before the flow focusing orifice and then was sheared into Janus droplets. Droplet diameter and corresponding generation frequency could be effectively manipulated. Subsequently, the generation of different Janus droplet parallel arrangements (e.g. monolayer, double-layer or three-layer arrangement) could be achieved by fluid regulation. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A microfluidic device utilising the flow focusing method was designed and fabricated for the high-throughput and controllable preparation of millimeter-scale water-in-oil (W1/O/W2) droplets. Two distinct flow focusing modes were employed in order to prepare the composite droplets. In the flow-focused axisymmetric jetting mode, the continuous phase propels the dispersed phase, forming a cone, which subsequently leads to a jet formation downstream of the small hole. When the outer phase is activated, perturbation growth interferes with downstream fragmentation, resulting in composite droplets with excellent monodispersity. In the dripping mode, the dispersed phase fails to form a jet downstream, and the interface disintegrates, resulting in droplet formation at the exit of the small orifice. In the jetting mode, the size and shell-to-core ratio of the generated droplets can be controlled by adjusting the volume of flow of the outer and inner phases, as well as the applied frequency. Furthermore, the applied perturbation allows for precise control of droplet size, which significantly reduces satellite droplet formation and enhances droplet monodispersity. In the dripping mode, the shell-to-core ratio is adjusted by manipulating the ratio of inner to outer flow rates, which is tailored to the specific requirements of the flow-focused dripping mode. The prepared compound droplets exhibit good monodispersity. Finally, the rotational solidification method can be employed to obtain spherical shells with a shell thickness of less than 20 mu m. In conclusion, the flow focusing method is an effective, controllable, and stable method for synthesising millimetre-sized composite droplets.
