Abstract:SnO2 -TiO2 /fly ash cenospheres (FAC) were prepared via hydrothermal method and used as an active photocatalyst in a photocatalytic system. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and N2 adsorption-desorption measurements were used to determine the structure and optical property of SnO2 -TiO2 /FAC. Phenol was selected as the model substance for photocatalytic reactions to evaluate catalytic ability. Results showed that the degradation efficiency of phenol by SnO2 -TiO2 /FAC was 90.7% higher than that decomposed by TiO2 /FAC. Increased efficiency could be due to the enhanced synergistic effect of semiconductors and FAC could provide more adsorption sites for the pollutant in the photocatalytic reaction. Furthermore, SnO2 -TiO2 /FAC composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic stability in four reuse cycles. Radical-trapping experiments further revealed the dominating functions of holes in the photocatalytic reaction.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is one of the effective strategies to eliminate various organic pollutants in water body. In this paper we have prepared a series of new composite photocatalysts to degrade phenol and norfloxacin under visible light irradiation. They were [FeII(dpbpy)2(H2O)2]/TiO2, [FeII(dpbpy)(phen)2]/TiO2 and [FeII(dpbpy)(bpy)2]/TiO2 (dpbpy: 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-diphosphoric acid, phen: 1,10-phenanthroline, bpy: 2,2-bipyridyl). The results show that their photocatalytic performance and cyclic stability are much better than that of pure TiO2 or P25. Phenol can be degraded almost completely and the active groups or substituents of norfloxacin (NOR) can be destroyed also, which greatly reduced the biological toxicity of phenol and norfloxacin in water. The possible mechanisms of improving the photocatalytic activity and stability of TiO2 by using Fe-complex are proposed based on free radical capture test and density functional theory calculation. It is clearly that the interfacial interaction between Fe-complex and titanium dioxide directly affects the photocatalytic activity and stability of the composite photocatalyst. The conjugated structure of the complexes plays a crucial role.

Abstract:Developing new nanophotocatalysts and identifying their roles are highly attractive in environmental protection and energy utilization. Photoelectro-Fenton process is an environmentally friendly technology and has a wide application in the control of environmental pollutants. However, efficient nanophotocatalysts responsive to visible light are still few. In this work, we have successfully synthesized a uniformly dispersed α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanotubes hetero-nanostructure by electrochemical deposition method for the degradation of phenol. Compared with the separate α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles and TiO2 nanotubes, the composite α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanotubes electrodes were more effective in the photoelectro-Fenton degradation of phenol and a 100% removal efficiency of phenol was obtained after 60min treatment. The composite α-Fe2O3/TiO2 electrodes showed an enhanced absorbance in visible light region and had good stability to photoelectro-Fenton reactions. The role of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles in various Fenton-related processes were systematically investigated. The results indicate that α-Fe2O3/TiO2 nanotubes are promising material for pollution prevention.

Abstract:Chlorophenols (CPs) are universal and toxic pollutants in nature, as they have been widely detected in surface water, groundwater, sediment, ambient air, soil, and the human body. In this work, novel FeOOH/BiO 2-x binary heterostructure composites with UV-Vis-NIR full-spectrum response were successfully constructed by anchoring highly dispersed amorphous FeOOH on BiO 2-x nanosheets. A series characterization indicated the binary components were successfully obtained. The FeOOH/BiO 2-x photocatalysts exhibited highly enhanced photocatalytic activity for the degradation of chlorophenols under UV-Vis-NIR full-spectrum irradiation. The amorphous FeOOH could effectively broaden the light response range, modulate the energy band structure and promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated electron-holes pairs, thus boosting the activation of molecular oxygen to generate •O 2 – . Furthermore, FeOOH/BiO 2-x maintained excellent photocatalytic performance upon real solar light of varied irradiance for consecutive 7 days, indicative of great potential towards phenolic pollutants degradation in water. The redox couples of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Bi (3+x)+ /Bi 3+ also accelerate the efficient generation of reactive oxygen species over FeOOH/BiO 2-x with improved durability. This work not only contributes to the design of full-spectrum responsive photocatalysts, but also provides a rational strategy for molecular oxygen activation towards the elimination of emerging contaminants.

Abstract:The use of TiO 2 for photocatalytic degradation of phenol solution was investigated. The effects of operating parameters such as catalyst dosage, oxidant dosage, the initial phenol concentration, and pH of the solution on photodegradation process were examined. The efficiency of photocatalytic degradation is the highest as pH=6, photocatalyst TiO 2 dosage 0.2 g·L -1 , 20 min UV irradiation, the efficiency of photocatalytic degradation can be 80%. Photodegradation followed the first-order kinetics. The relationship between photodegradation rate and phenol concentration can be described by the formula kaap=-0.0027C0+0.0844.
Heterogeneous catalytic degradation of phenol by CuFe2O4/Bi12O15Cl6 photocatalyst activated peroxymonosulfate

Abstract:In this study, Bi12O15Cl6 and CuFe2O4 were synthesized by solvothermal and sol-gel methods, respectively, and the binary composite CuFe2O4/Bi12O15Cl6 was successfully synthesized by heat treatment. The structure and morphology were characterized by a series of tests such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). And the effects of catalysts of different composite proportions, peroxymonosulfate (PMS) dosage, anionic environment and initial pH on the photocatalytic degradation of phenol were investigated. The experimental results showed that BCF-30 had the highest photocatalytic activity with 97.8% removal of phenol at 30 min and a pseudo primary kinetic constant k = 0.13539 min−1. The stability and reusability of the CuFe2O4/Bi12O15Cl6 composites were demonstrated by cycling experiments. The results of free radical analysis indicated that SO4 •−, •O2 −, h+ and •OH were the main active species, and on this basis, the mechanism of PMS activation and phenol degradation by CuFe2O4/Bi12O15Cl6 under visible light conditions was proposed. In addition, the intermediate products degraded by phenol were detected by liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to expound the phenol degradation and conversion pathways.

Abstract:In this study, Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles were prepared from FeCl2/FeCl3 and NaOH solution by chemical co-precipitation method in an impinging stream-rotating packed bed. Then, Fe3O4/TiO2 photocatalyst was prepared for photocatalytic degradation of phenol by sol–gel method using butyl titanate and Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles. The surface morphology, structure and crystalline phase of Fe3O4/TiO2 were characterized by high resolution transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer, dynamic light scattering and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. A 100 mg L−1 phenol aqueous solution was used as the pollutant. The effects of calcination temperature, the dosage of butyl titanate, the dosage of catalyst and solution pH value on the photocatalytic activity of Fe3O4/TiO2 were investigated. The results showed that Fe3O4/TiO2 photocatalyst could be easily recovered from the solution by permanent magnet. The photocatalytic activity reached a maximum under the following conditions: calcination temperature, 400 °C; butyl titanate dosage, 10 mL; catalyst dosage, 3 g L−1; and solution pH value, 2.

A Cu/CuFe2O4-OVs two-electron centre-based synergistic photocatalysis-Fenton system for efficient degradation of organic pollutants

Abstract:To promote the separation of photogenerated carriers, break through the bottleneck of classical Fenton reaction, and achieve the efficient degradation of organic pollutants, a two-electron centre Cu/CuFe2O4 with oxygen vacancies (Cu/CuFe2O4-OVs)1 was synthesised by citric acid complexation and ascorbic acid (Vc)2 in-situ reduction. Under visible light irradiation, H2O2 was added to form a two-electron centre synergistic photocatalysis-Fenton degradation system that could degrade 100 ppm of phenol by 92.72% in 18 min. The degradation efficiency constant was 8165 and 4.35 times that of photocatalysis and Fenton oxidation, respectively. Such excellent degradation activity is attributed to the synergistic effect of the two-electron centre and photocatalysis-Fenton. Cu0 has two functions: (1) it acts as an electronic bridge of Fe and Cu in Fenton and accelerates the separation of photogenerated carriers; (2) it acts as the transfer channel of the two-electron centre. Oxygen vacancies are electron-rich centres that activate H2O2, while the electron-poor centre Cu(II) captures photogenerated electrons and phenol electrons. Quenching experiments and EPR results indicated that OH, O2− and h+ are the main active species. The synergistic degradation mechanism was proposed based on experiments and theoretical calculations. Through further optimization of the conditions and cyclic regeneration stability test, the system was extended to degrade different dyes, phenolic organic pollutants and coking wastewater.

Abstract:The Fe-doped two-dimensional BiOCl nanosheets with rich surface oxygen vacancies (Fe-BiOCl OVs) were prepared by a solvothermal method, which could completely degraded phenol solution (20 ppm) under the photocatalytic-Fenton synergistic effect. The surface oxygen vacancies play an important role in enhancing the synergistic degradation activity, which can not only effectively promote the separation efficiency of photogenerated charges and speed up the Fenton reaction, but also act as the activation sites of H2O2 to generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH), all of these have a positive effect on the synergistic degradation system.

Abstract:Pure cubic beta-Fe2O3 crystal, which can absorb visible light (< 650 nm) on account of the bandgap of 1.9 eV as a direct bandgap semiconductor, was employed as a low-cost and non-toxic catalyst for photo-Fenton reaction in this article. Diverse organic contaminants including rhodamine B (RhB), methyl orange (MO), alizarin red (AR) and phenol can be effectively degraded. In particular, the degradation of RhB were investigated detailedly. As such, hydroxyl radicals (.OH) were verified to act as considerable active species for the process by using terephthalic acid as an indicator. Degradation mechanism and intermediates of phenol in the photo-Fenton reaction was discovered by virtue of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC MS). Notably, hydroxylation of phenol generated some intermediates, which are converted into H2O and CO2 eventually.
Photochemically Enhanced Degradation of Phenol Using Heterogeneous Fenton-type Catalysts.

Abstract:The degradation of phenol was carried out using heterogeneous Fenton-type catalysts in the presence of H2O2 and UV. Catalysts were prepared by exchanging and immobilizing Fe2+ in zeolite 13X, silica gel or Al2O3. The concentration of phenol solution was 100 mg/L. The amount of H2O2 added was the stoichiometric amount of H2O2 required for the total oxidation of phenol. Under the irradiation of medium pressure light (300 W) phenol was mineralized within 1 h in the presence of Fe2+/zeolite 13X. The COD removal rate was enhanced in the presence of Fe2+/zeolite 13X compared to that of Fe2+/silica gel or Fe2+/Al2O3. Analogous homogenous photo-Fenton reaction with equivalent Fe2+ was also carried out to evaluate the catalysis efficiency of Fe2+/zeolite 13X. Results showed that the COD removal rate was near to that of homogeneous Fenton, while heterogeneous Fe2+/zeolite 13X catalyst could be recycled.
High-efficiency catalytic degradation of phenol based on the peroxidase-like activity of cupric oxide nanoparticles

Abstract:Based on the recently discovered peroxidase-like activity, cupric oxide nanoparticles with diameters about 6 nm were synthesized and used to remove phenol from aqueous solution. As a kind of peroxidase mimetic substance, cupric oxide nanoparticles can be used as a promising catalyst for the total oxidation of phenol in aqueous solutions by peroxidation, which therefore avoids the need of secondary treatments. The mechanism study suggested that cupric oxide nanoparticles could catalyze hydrogen peroxide to form hydroxyl free radicals, which were mainly responsible for the removal of phenol. The catalytic conditions for the phenol degradation were extensively optimized among a range of pH as well as initial concentration of catalyst, H 2 O 2 and phenol. High degradation efficiency of phenol can be achieved in relatively wide pH range from 3 to 7. Under optimized conditions, phenol (0.25 g/l) can be eliminated completely in 35 min. It can be potentially applied in treating the industrial wastewaters.

Abstract:The development of novel photocatalysts with high photocatalytic ability is important in the field of photocatalytic degradation and transformation. In this work, we combined ilmenite phase FeTiO3 and TiO2 nanoparticles (P25) through a cross-linking method to produce novel hexagonal FeTiO3/TiO2 composites coated by nanosized TiO2 particles. Their morphology, crystallinity, and light absorption ability were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) analyses, respectively. The heterojunction effect between FeTiO3 and TiO2 could promote the spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, gave the FeTiO3/TiO2 composites strong oxidizing ability, and increased absorption of Xe lamp light. When used as photocatalysts toward phenolic compounds and dyes, the 5% FeTiO3/TiO2 composite showed the highest photocatalytic activity. The intermediate product of 4-chlorophenol degradation was also characterized, and the photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. The results indicated that the as-prepared FeTiO3/TiO2 composite materials show promise as a photocatalyst for environmental remediation, which could be applied to water pollution control.

Catalytic Ozonation Degradation of Phenol in Water by Mesoporous alpha-FeOOH

Abstract:Using FeSO4 center dot 7H(2)O and H2O2 as raw materials, alpha-FeOOH nano-catalyst with larger surface area was prepared by a facile and green hydrothermal synthesis route. The material was characterized by XRD, TEM and N-2 adsorption-desorption. The mesoporous catalyst is composed of alpha-FeOOH nanorods with diameter of 13 similar to 20 nm, length of 70 similar to 100 nm. The catalyst has a larger Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) surface area of 132 m(2). g(-1) and higher density of surface hydroxyl groups of 5.484 mmol . g(-1). The nano-catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance in the ozonation degradation of phenol in water. The mechanism Study revealed that the transformation from ozone molecules to hydroxyl radicals and the acceleration on ozonation degradation of phenol were enhanced by the nanocatalyst with higher specific surface area, surface hydroxyl groups and proper pH(pzc) value during the heterogeneous catalysis process.

Abstract:As two representative phenolic pollutants, chlorophene (CP) and 4-tert-butylphenol (4-tBP) are used in large quantities and could have adverse effects on aquatic organisms and even human health. Due to their co-occurrence in water and wastewater, the oxidative degradation of mixed solution of the two phenols by fer-rate (Fe(VI)) was systematically investigated in this work. Compared with the single solution, the kapp values of CP and 4-tBP were increased by 15.7% and 91.9%, respectively in the mixed solution, and the calculated reaction stoichiometric efficiency (RSE) was also improved by more than one time. The reaction intermediates were identified by liquid chromatography-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (LC-TOF-MS) analysis, from which three possible pathways including direct oxidation, oxygen transfer, ring opening and coupling reaction were proposed for mixed transformation of CP and 4-tBP in Fe(VI) system. The single/double oxygen transfer and single-electron transfer mechanism for the corresponding formation of hydroxylation products and coupling products from CP and 4-tBP were further elucidated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Since the cross-coupling reaction was more prone to occur than self-coupling reaction, the addition of another phenol promoted the conversion of the original phenol, leading to the increased kapp values of the two phenols in mixture solution. Finally, the salt bridge experiment also confirmed that the electron transfer between organic pollutants and Fe (VI) was enhanced in mixture solution of phenols. Findings of this study may provide useful information for eliminating co-existing water contaminants by Fe(VI).
Efficient photocatalytic in-situ Fenton degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol via anthraquinone-modified carbon nitride for 2e- oxygen reduction

Abstract:Constructing a photocatalytic in-situ Fenton system (PISFs) is a promising strategy to address the need for continuous hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) addition and the low efficiency of H2O2 activation for hydroxyl radical generation in the traditional Fenton reaction. In this study, we constructed a photocatalytic in-situ Fenton system using anthraquinone-modified carbon nitride (AQ-C3N4) for efficient pollutant degradation. The resultant AQ-C3N4 not only enhanced the production of H2O2 but also increased the generation of hydroxyl radical (·OH). Experimental results demonstrated that, the apparent rate constant for the degradation of 2,4-Dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) by AQ-C3N4-PISFs was 0.145 min-1, which is 2.74 times higher than that of C3N4 under visible light. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that AQ modification promotes electron-hole separation while increasing the adsorption energy of O2. Independent gradient model (IGM) analysis based on Hirshfeld Partition revealed that van der Waals interactions between AQ-C3N4 and 2,4-DCP promoted the degradation process. This work provides new ideas to overcome the problems of continuous addition of H2O2 and low utilization of ·OH that exist in conventional Fenton system.
Preparation of a novel type-II FePc/PDINH heterojunction photocatalyst via electrostatic interactions for high-efficient phenol degradation

Abstract:The photocatalytic removal of organic pollutants from wastewater has received attention due to its environmental friendliness and low cost in recent years. Herein, a type-II heterojunction iron(II) phthalocyanine/perylene-3,4,9, 10-tetracarboxylic diimide (FePc/PDINH) composite photocatalyst was fabricated via electrostatic interactions, and its photocatalytic degradation performance and mechanism were explored. The FePc/PDINH photocatalyst exhibited a photocatalytic phenol removal efficiency of 95.7 % within 30 min. The degradation rate was 13.6 and 248.8-times higher than that of single PDINH and FePc under the optimal reaction conditions. The photocurrent response and photoluminescence spectroscopy results indicated that electron-hole pair recombination was hindered, and the migration rate of photogenerated carriers was improved due to the formation of a type-II heterojunction. The quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy results showed that ·O2 − and 1O2 were the main reactive oxygen species involved in phenol degradation. Some common coexisting anions significantly inhibited phenol degradation. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that electrostatic interactions between FePc and PDINH enhanced the photocatalytic activity. This allowed remarkable electron transfer at the interface and facilitated efficient interfacial charge migration and separation. This study offers a fresh design strategy for PDINH-based photocatalytic composites for organic pollutant degradation.

Abstract:The utilization of renewable solar energy through near-infrared (NIR)-driven photothermal catalysts offers a potential novel strategy for environmental remediation. In this work, we reported an initial demonstration of the peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation in oxidative degradation of organics (represented by bisphenol A (BPA)) via a unique NIR light-to-heat conversion effect using cost-effective and biocompatible nanoparticles (NPs). The systematical investigation of the photothermal experiments found that Fe3O4 magnetic NPs exhibit great photothermal conversion efficiency (65.4%) and have the capability to quickly elevate the system temperature to 61°C. The increased reaction temperature leads to the homolytic fission of the OO bond for producing sulfate radical (SO4 −) and the derivative hydroxyl radical (OH), as confirmed by the radical quenching and electron paramagnetic resonances (EPR) tests, and in turn accelerates the thermocatalytic degradation reaction of BPA. The BPA degradation reaction rate of the NIR/Fe3O4/PDS system is about 25.8 times and 9.4 times of that in the NIR/PDS and Fe3O4/PDS systems, respectively. Both photothermal heating and surface valence states conversion of Fe2+/Fe3+ on Fe3O4 under dark conditions make a contribution to the observed oxidation reactions. Moreover, this NIR light-to-heat activation system exhibits efficient photocatalytic degradation of BPA molecules in deep water by virtue of the deep penetration capability of NIR light in water, highlighting NIR-driven photothermal catalysts hold the excellent potential to be applied in practical water restoration through PDS activation.

Abstract:Nanozyme technology is a relatively new technology that has shown promising applications in the removal of water pollutants. This study utilized a CeO2/foveolate g-C3N4 (CeO2/FCN) composite with S-scheme heterojunction to achieve efficient removal of Phenanthrene (PHE) through a combination of photocatalytic and enzymatic reactions. The S-scheme heterojunction was effective in inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated electron hole pairs, which promoted the generation of·OH and·O2 -. Additionally, activated H2O2 enables Ce to achieve redox cycle reaction and generate more·OH for catalytic degradation, effectively improving the concentration of active species and promoting the photo-enzyme synergistic catalytic performance. The experimental results showed that PHE degradation efficiency of CeO2/FCN composite could reach 96.6% in 60 min. Furthermore, the photo-enzyme synergistic catalytic mechanism of CeO2/FCN composite and the possible intermediates generated in the degradation process were studied. The highly toxic PHE was converted into non-toxic green degradation products, providing an effective method for the photo-enzyme synergistic catalytic degradation of PAHs.

Abstract:Phenolic compounds removal is a very active research field due to occurrence and the toxicity of phenolic pollutants in industrial wastewaters. In order to make an a priori selection of the most efficient removal process for a target structure this contribution reviews and compares some of the mechanistic aspects of the oxidation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and catalyzed by complexed iron which is the in-common element in Fenton systems, plant peroxidases and biomimetics. Different substrates were considered from the most basic phenol molecule to complex structures such as phenolic dyes and lignins. The reactivity of iron is related to its microenvironment generated by ligands and their electron withdrawing capacity thus conditioning the type of cleavage induced on hydrogen peroxide and the oxidation state change on iron upon reaction. The relative concentrations of organic to inorganic free radicals generated control the main catalytic action; i.e. from degradation up to mineralization in Fenton systems or oligomerization up to polymerization in plant peroxidases systems. Moreover, some reaction conditions as the peroxide concentration, the initial molar ratio of organic compounds to peroxide and the type of reaction solvent are identified as key factors to promote a desired action mechanism by peroxidases (and their biomimetics).
