Abstract:Phase change microcapsules were synthesized by suspension polymerization with methyl methacrylate-acrylic acid copolymer modified by graphene oxide (GO) as wall material and solid paraffin as core material.OM, SEM, FT-IR, DSC and TGA were used to discuss morphology, chemical structure and thermal properties of microcapsule.The results showed that when the core/walll was 4∶10 and graphene oxide content reached 0.6 wt％, graphene oxide was distributed evenly in the wall.The average yield of microcapsules was 87.41％.The cladding rate was 71.06％.The microcapsules were sphere and the average size was about 200μm.The phase transition enthalpy of microcapsules was 73.5 J/g.The thermal property and mechanical strength of them were improved.

Abstract:GO microcapsules were assembled on the surface of atomized droplets prepared by a spray-drying strategy. The nanochannels in the microcapsule wall can be adjusted by water-soluble polymers and make the microcapsule exhibit sustained release. The strategy can further be employed to encapsulate metal organic frameworks to obtain MOF-GO yolk-shell superstructures.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) and its nanocomposites are widely used in energy storage devices, membrane separation, multi-functional materials due to their good charge transferring property and excellent mechanical, physical, chemical properties. The performances of materials and devices are strongly dependent on the dispersion effects of GO in matrix. In the applications of polymer/GO nanocomposites, the re-dispersion of dried GO in matrix with good effects is still having some difficulties. Good dispersion of GO solution with polymer aqueous would be obtained easily. However, the dispersion of GO solution in non-aqueous polymers is still a great challenge. In this paper, attempts of the dispersion of GO solution in non-aqueous polymers were carried out with oil/water interface mixed approach. In the study, PVDF [poly-(vinylidene difluoride)] selected as representative polymer is based on the following reason. PVDF is a well-known organic multi-functional polymer, which is widely used in several devices due to its outstanding piezoelectric, pyroelectric, and dielectric performance. PVDF/GO nanocomposites were obtained with interface blend, and a series of characterizations were performed. The photoconductive responses to weak visible light and 808 nm NIR (near infrared) were studied based on interdigital electrodes of Au on flexible polymer film substrate with casting method. The results indicate that the GO has good dispersion in PVDF matrix and no obvious aggregation of GO is observed. The resulting nanocomposite exhibits good photo-switching behavior to visible light, while the response and recovery are very rapidly. The response to weak 808 nm NIR is relatively weak, this may be the results of PVDF possessing some absorbance to NIR. It can be seen that an intelligent composite film with external stimuli responses is developed and can be used in many fields, such as electronic skin, sensors and actuators, information storage, artificial muscle, biomimetic films, membrane separation controlled with external stimuli.

Abstract:Macroporous polymer-graphene oxide (GO) composites were successfully prepared using Pickering high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templates. GO flakes were modified by the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and used as the stabilizer of water-in-oil (W/O) Pickering emulsions. CTAB-modified GO is effective at stabilizing W/O Pickering HIPEs, and the lowest GO content is only about 0.2 mg mL(-1) (relative to the volume of the oil phase). The close-cell morphology of the resulting poly-Pickering HIPEs is observed, and the void size of the porous polymers is tuned by varying the concentration of GO. Three-dimensional macroporous chemically modified graphene (CMG) monoliths with a high specific surface area of about 490 m(2) g(-1) were obtained after removing the cellular polymer substrates through calcination. The micropores were also found in CMGs, which may be caused by the decomposition of CTAB adsorbed on the surface of GO.
Core@double‐shell structured multifunctional phase change microcapsules based on modified graphene oxide Pickering emulsion

Abstract:New multifunctional phase change microcapsules with paraffin (Pn) as core and GO and lead tungstate (PbWO4) as double‐shell were designed by modified GO Pickering emulsion, and the effect of GO content on Pn@GO@PbWO4 microcapsules was studied. The morphology, chemical composition, and structure of Pn@GO@PbWO4 microcapsules were characterized, and their performance was studied in depth. The Pn@GO@PbWO4 microcapsules had a dense shell and a regular spherical structure. Compared with microcapsules without GO addition, the resultant Pn@GO@PbWO4 microcapsules could demonstrate high phase change reliability and thermal stability. Most of all, the anti‐seepage performance had been greatly improved by 67.27%. The results of contact angle (CA) measurement and gamma‐ray shielding test showed that the GO and PbWO4 double‐shell multifunctional microcapsules with superhydrophobic property and good gamma‐ray shielding property and high anti‐seepage performance had great attraction in expanding the application field of phase change materials.

Abstract:Pickering emulsion-templated polystyrene (PS)/graphene oxide (GO) composite microspheres were successfully prepared using surface-functionalized silica as the stabilizer. These preformed polymer/GO composite microspheres were then melt-blended into polymer matrix to prepare nanocomposite materials in a short minute using HAAKE torque rheometer. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images of the nanocomposites demonstrate that GO is uniformly dispersed into PS matrix. A significant decrease of coefficient of thermal expansion (CIE) values from more than 150 to 50 ppm/K is realized with the introduction of well-dispersed GO nanosheets. The glass transition temperature (T-g) and the temperature of 5% weight loss (T-0.05) are increased by 5 and 17 degrees C, respectively. Furthermore, the impact energy of the composite sample with a GO loading of 0.86% is 64% greater than that of pure PS, and is nearly twice as high as that of the composite which was prepared by direct melt-blending of surface-modified GO and commercial PS. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the composites are also obviously improved. The work provides an economic and convenient method which eliminates the dispersion problem of GO in polymer matrix to prepare GO-based nanocomposite materials for industrial application on a large scale. Abstract:Constructing oriented layered filler networks in methyl vinyl silicone rubber (PDMS) composites is an effective strategy to enhance their gas barrier properties. Herein, GO was first functionalized by sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) to form amphiphilic GO (SCGO). Furthermore, SCGO and PDMS were mixed to form the water-in-oil type SCGO/PDMS Pickering emulsions. A porous PDMS masterbatch contained hollow SCGO shells was further obtained through freeze-drying the SCGO/PDMS Pickering emulsions. Followed by hot pressing, these hollow shells composed of SCGO sheets collapsed to form the oriented filler networks in the PDMS composites. When the content of SCGO was 3 phr, the gas barrier properties of SCGO/PDMS composites increased 85.7% relative to the pure PDMS. Meanwhile, the gas barrier properties of the SCGO/PDMS composites with oriented filler networks were 20–30% higher than those of the SCGO/PDMS composites with random filler networks at the same filler content.

Abstract:In recent years, graphene oxide/polymer composites have been rapidly developed. Among numerous fillers, graphene oxide (GO) has multiple excellent properties. Its special two-dimensional structure makes it anisotropic with multiple properties that can effectively improve the overall performance of polymers, which makes it a promising candidate for polymer modification research. GO/polymer composites have been widely investigated in many fields, and many researches have shown that modulating the amount of GO and the functional groups on its surface can achieve significant improvement of polymer properties. Therefore, from the perspective of developing new high-performance polymer composites, a multidimensional understanding of GO nanofillers and their role in polymer modification is desired. This review presents the preparation methods of GO and GO/polymer composites, selectively reviewing the latest techniques for modulating the mechanical, electrical, electrochemical, thermal, adsorption, and barrier properties of polymers by GO. Finally, the development of GO/polymer composites is summarized and prospected.

Abstract:Abstract Graphene oxide (GO) is a unique 2D material that can form nanochannels between adjacent nanosheets, and has attracted concentrated interests in the field of molecule sieving. However, the size of the nanochannels is fixed and hard to change, which is undesirable when using GO‐based membranes for separation. Herein, a strategy for controllable adjusting the microstructure of GO nanosheets and size of nanochannels by grafting polydopamine (PDA) on GO is reported. A series of PDA‐g‐GO composite membranes with different PDA loading are successfully fabricated by simple vacuum filtration. The composite membranes are used to separate 70 wt% ethanol–H 2 O mixture and 70 wt% isopropyl alcohol–H 2 O mixture by pervaporation, respectively. The results demonstrate that by grafting PDA on GO, the size of nanochannels can be adjusted effectively. Compared with the original GO membrane, the PDA‐g‐GO composite membranes show markedly different separation performance. This strategy may significantly extend the applications of GO membranes with fine‐tuned nanochannels in various separation fields.

Abstract:Dual functional graphene oxide (GO) microcapsules were fabricated through self-assembly in Pickering emulsions, carrying corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTA) on the microcapsule shells and encapsulating a self-healing agent epoxy monomer. The formation of the GO microcapsules was assisted by the interaction between BTA and GO, which provided robust encapsulation for the epoxy monomer. The loading capacity of BTA and epoxy monomer reached 90.5%. The addition of the GO microcapsules simultaneously promoted the corrosion protection and self-healing properties of the waterborne epoxy composite coatings. The healing efficiency of the composite coatings reached over 99.7% when the content of the microcapsules was 10 wt%. Meanwhile, the corrosion current density of the intact coatings was decreased for around 50 times.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of polyethylene terephthalate‐polyethylene naphthalate copolymer (PETN) composites with high oxygen barrier property were prepared by introducing trace of graphene oxide (GO) during the in‐situ polymerization. The single‐layer GO nanosheets with large lateral size (about 1.8 μm) and abundant functional groups were prepared by a combination of chemical exfoliation and solvent exchange. During the in‐situ polymerization process, some surface region of GO was grafted by PETN molecular chains with the grafting rate being 80%, which enhanced the interfacial interaction between GO and PETN matrix. Furthermore, the ungrafting surface region of GO were thermally reduced to the complete graphene. Due to the in‐plane stacking of grafted GO and reduced GO, and the increased crystallinity of PETN matrix, the oxygen transport path of the PETN film was greatly prolonged, which endowed the PETN nanocomposite films with highly improved oxygen barrier performance. When the GO content was only 0.1 wt%, the oxygen permeability coefficient of the nanocomposite films was as low as 38.9 cc·mil·m−2·day−1·0.1 MPa−1, which was about 4.5 times lower than that of the pure PETN film. Abstract:P(TMSPMA-co-OEGMA) nanocapsules with controllable oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) densities and robustly cross-linked structures were successfully fabricated from the cross-linkable copolymer, poly[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate-co-oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate] (P(TMSPMA-co-OEGMA)). The densities of OEG segments of the resultant P(TMSPMA-co-OEGMA) nanocapsules could be easily controlled by tuning the OEGMA contents of copolymer P(TMSPMA-co-OEGMA). The microenvironments of the P(TMSPMA-co-OEGMA) nanocapsules were determined to be hydrophobic. It was demonstrated that hydrophobic pyrene could be in situ loaded into the P(TMSPMA-co-OEGMA) nanocapsules during the fabrication procedure. The release rates of pyrene from the P(TMSPMA-co-OEGMA) nanocapsules were dependent on the contents of OEGMA, indicating that the permeation properties of P(TMSPMA-co-OEGMA) nanocapsules could be tuned by varying the cross-linked densities of the nanocapsule walls. It was further demonstrated that other functional groups could be easily incorporated into the resultant polymer nanocapsules by using the similar procedure. The preparation of polymer nanocapsules with various functionalities and robustly cross-linked walls without any further post modification process, any sacrificial core and surfactant would be beneficial from scientific and technical point of views.
Preparation and characterization of potato protein-based microcapsules with an emphasis on the mechanism of interaction among the main components

Abstract:Background: Potato protein (PP) has promising potential for utilization in food applications due to its high nutritive value and functional properties. Grapeseed oil (GO) is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and antioxidant active ingredients. However, its application is limited because of low stability and high volatility. In order to overcome such problems, PP-based microcapsules encapsulating GO were produced by complex coacervation, and characterized using optical, thermodynamic and spectroscopic analyses. Results: Results indicated that a ratio of GO/PP of 1:2 led to the best encapsulation effect with the maximum microencapsulation efficiency and yield. Intact and nearly spherical microcapsules were observed from scanning electron microscopy images. Results of thermogravimetry demonstrated that thermal resistance was increased in the microencapsulated GO, indicating that PP-based microcapsules could be a good way to protect the thermal stability of GO. Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated that hydrogen bonding and covalent crosslinking might occur among wall materials, but a physical interaction between GO and wall materials. Conclusions: PP can be successfully used to encapsulate GO when combined with chitosan, indicating that PP-based microcapsules have potential for application in encapsulating liquid oils with functional properties. A schematic diagram of possible interactions was constructed to better understand the mechanism of formation of the microcapsules. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.
Improved energy storage property of ferroelectric polymer-based sandwiched composites interlayered with graphene oxide @ SiO2 core–shell nanoplatelets

Abstract:The dielectric capacitors with high energy storage capability are demand for power electronic devices to keep pace with the development of the modern electronic and electrical industry. Although polymer-based dielectric composites showing the superiorities of ease processing, self-healing and low cost have a great potential in various applications, their energy storage capability is still severely limited by the negative coupling effect between dielectric permittivity and breakdown strength. In this study, we present a two-dimensional graphene oxide@silica core–shell nanoplatelets (GO@SiO 2 ) constructed through the classical Stöber method. Moreover, a series of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/GO@SiO 2 /PVDF sandwich-structured composites were assembled layer-by-layer and obtained through combining the spray coating and solution casting procedures. The GO@SiO 2 nanoplatelets were closely aligned and orientated along the direction that perpendicular to the electric field, forming the non-traditional inorganic middle layer. The thickness of the middle layer is dependent on the GO@SiO 2 loading fraction, which directly influenced the overall dielectric and electrical performances of the sandwich-structured composites. An enhanced breakdown strength (~ 253 MV m −1 ) and discharged density (~ 5.19 J cm −3 ) can be obtained from the PVDF/GO@SiO 2 /PVDF composite filled with the GO@SiO 2 loading fraction as small as 1.37 wt%, which are 23.4% and 161% higher than those of neat PVDF (~ 1.99 J cm −3 at 205 MV m −1 ), respectively. The improved energy storage capability could be attributed to the synergetic contribution of highly insulating SiO 2 shell, the additional core–shell interfacial interaction, the orientation that perpendicular to electric field and the multilayered construction of composite. Thus, this research provides a promising approach for the design of advanced composites with an improved dielectric energy storage property.

Abstract:Nanocomposites consisting of two-dimensional (2D) functional reinforcements embedded in a polymeric matrix provide great opportunities for the design of multifunctional artificial materials. However, the efficient formation of materials with high-performance structures and multifunctional properties is still challenging. Herein, we demonstrate a generic approach to fabricate multifunctional poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based nanocomposite films through a solvent evaporation method with modified graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets as the functional fillers. Inspired by the lubricating protein lubricin (LUB), anchored bottlebrush polymers (BBPs) were designed as a molecular glue to maintain the bottlebrush conformation immobilized on the GO nanosheets, thereby dominating the directed assembly of GO nanosheets in a PVA matrix. The BBPs have polyzwitterionic brushes which provide a strongly bound hydrated layer and antifouling property and mussel-mimetic anchors which strongly anchor the copolymer to the GO surface. Furthermore, polyzwitterion-containing BBPs tightly combined with PVA chains act as a bridge for linking the GO nanosheets and the PVA matrix. The highly hydrated bottlebrush architecture mediates repulsion between the adjacent GO surfaces, yielding the well-dispersed and aligned GO nanosheets in the nanocomposites. The fabulous coupling of a layered arrangement of GO nanosheets and highly hydrated polyzwitterionic bottlebrushes of BBPs enables the resultant BBPs@GO/PVA nanocomposite film to exhibit a high photothermal efficiency (55.1%), UV resistance, and an exceptional gas barrier (84.8% decrease) at low modified-GO loadings as well as a superior antimicrobial property. This study provides a new approach for designing multifunctional nanocomposites with ordered structures and giving great promise to various applications.

Versatile fabrication of nanocomposite microcapsules with controlled shell thickness and low permeability

Abstract:Novel ethyl phenylacetate (EPA)-loaded nanocomposite microcapsules with polyurea (PU) /poly (melamine formaldehyde) (PMF) shells were facilely and fabricated: by using silica nanoparticle-stabilized oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion template and subsequent interfacial reaction and in situ polymerization. SiO2 nanoparticles absorbed at the interface between oil and water to stabilize the o/w emulsions. The oil droplets containing EPA, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and tolylene 2,4-diisocyanate-terminated poly (propylene glycol) (PPG-TDI) were subsequently reacted with MF prepolymer (pre-MF) dissolved in water phases. The interfacial reaction between pre-MF and IPDI produced interior PU walls. Meanwhile, the in situ polymerization of pre-MF generated exterior PMF walls. It was found that these in/out double walls were compact together. The resulting capsules had spherical shapes and rough exterior surfaces, and could be easily isolated, dried, and redispersed in epoxy resins. The size of the produced microcapsules was dependent on the concentration of SiO2 nanoparticles. The dynamic thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that the capsules showed excellent thermal stability with little weight loss when exposed at 150 °C for 2 h. Interestingly, with a double PU/PMF shell, these capsules exhibited an extra-low permeability. Moreover, these microcapsules can also demonstrate exceelent magnetic responsiveness after introducing magnetic nanoparticles inside. We believe our microcapsules could be potential candidates in microcapsule engineering, self-healing composites, and drug-carrying systems.

Polymerization of styrene stabilized by GO nanosheets is conducted at varied pH values. The morphology of the products is observed by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). It is found that GO coated polystyrene (PS) microspheres with narrow size distribution are obtained, although highly hydrophilic GO nanosheets cannot stabilize the monomer droplets in aqueous phase. Flocculation of polymer microspheres and GO nanosheets embedded in the PS matrix is induced by further decreasing the hydrophilicity of stabilizer. FT-IR, UV-vis spectra, XRD patterns and TGA results indicate the strong interaction between resulted PS chains and GO nanosheets during the initial stage of the polymerization. The amphiphilicity of GO nanosheets and the interaction between polymer and stabilizer are considered to be responsible for the fabrication of GO coated PS colloidal particles.
Improving the Drug Delivery Characteristics of Graphene Oxide Based Polymer Nanocomposites Through the “One-Pot” Synthetic Approach of Single-Electron-transfer Living Radical Polymerization

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) based polymer nanocomposites have attracted extensive research interest recently for their outstanding physicochemical properties and potential applications. However, surface modification of GO with synthetic polymers has demonstrated to be trouble for most polymerization procedures are occurred under non-aqueous solution, which will in turn lead to the restacking of GO. In this work, a facile and efficient "one-pot" strategy has been developed for surface modification of GO with synthetic polymers through single-electron-transfer living radical polymerization (SET-LRP). The GO based polymer nanocomposites were obtained via SET-LRP in aqueous solution using poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) as the monomer and 11-bromoundecanoic acid as the initiator, which could be effectively adsorbed on GO through hydrophobic interaction. The successful preparation of GO based polymer nanocomposites was confirmed by a series of characterization techniques such as H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The resultant products exhibit high water disperisibility, excellent biocompatibility and high efficient drug loading capability, making these PEGylated GO nanocomposites promising candidates for biomedical applications. Enhancement of Gas Barrier Properties of Graphene Oxide/Poly (Lactic Acid) Films Using a Solvent-free Method

Abstract:Graphene oxide(GO)/polylactic acid (PLA) nanocomposite, prepared using a solvent-free melt mixing processing, is investigated as a potential oxygen barrier packaging film in this work. In order to disperse GO homogeneously in PLA matrix, hydrophobic silane coupling agent, i.e., γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)propyltrimethoxysilane (KH560), is used to modify the graphene oxide sheets. The modified GO is able to be well bonded to the PLA due to the formation of covalent bonds between the epoxy groups of KH560 and the carboxyl and hydroxyl terminal groups of PLA. Furthermore, the thermal stability of GO is enhanced due to the long alkyl side chain of KH560, which could also increase the crystallinity of PLA. As a result, the crystallinity of PLA is significantly improved because of the linear KH560 chains, which can act as nucleating agents to improve the crystallization. The KH560-GO helps to reduce the O2 permeability of KH560-GO/PLA composite films via a dual-action mechanism: (1) providing physical barrier due to their native barrier properties, and (2) by resulting in higher degree of crystallinity. The as-prepared KH560-GO0.75/PLA is able to exhibit ca. 33% and ca. 13% decrease in the PO2 than the neat PLA and GO0.75/PLA film, respectively. Finally, the mechanical properties and impact fractured surfaces indicate that the increase in the tensile strength and elongation at break value of KH560-GO/PLA are due to the strong interfacial adhesion and the strong bonding between the epoxy group of KH560-GO and hydroxyl and carboxyl acid terminal groups of PLA matrix.
