Abstract:Although the electron selectivity (ES) of zerovalent iron (ZVI) for target contaminant and its utilization ratio (UR) decide the removal capacity of ZVI, little effort has been made to improve them. Taking selenate [Se(VI)] as a target contaminant, this study investigated the coupled influence of aeration gas and Fe(II) on the ES and UR of ZVI. Oxygen was necessary for effective removal of Se(VI) by ZVI without Fe(II) addition. Due to the application of 1.0 mM Fe(II), the ES of ZVI was increased from 3.2-3.6% to 6.2-6.8% and the UR of ZVI was improved by 5.0-19.4% under aerobic conditions, which resulted in a 100-180% increase in the Se(VI) removal capacity by ZVI. Se(VI) reduction by Fe0 was a heterogeneous redox reaction, and the enrichment of Se(VI) on ZVI surface was the first step of electron transfer from Fe0 core to Se(VI). Oxygen promoted the generation of iron (hydr)oxides, which facilitated the enrichment of Se(VI) on the ZVI particle surface. Therefore, the high oxygen fraction (25-50%) in the purging gas resulted in only a slight decrease in the ES of ZVI. Fe(II) addition resulted in a pH drop and promoted the generation of lepidocrocite and magnetite, which benefited Se(VI) adsorption and the following electron transfer from underlying Fe0 to surface-located Se(VI).
Effects of Intermittent Chemical Dosing on Volatile Sulfur Compounds in Sewer Headspace

Abstract:Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and volatile organic sulfide compounds (VOSCs), can be produced in sewer systems causing sewer odor problems. In this study, the effects of intermittently dosing ferric iron, hydrogen peroxide, and nitrate on H2S and VOSCs in sewer headspace were investigated. In order to characterize the composition of VSCs, an HC-3 trace sulfur analyzer and gas chromatograph (GC) equipped with a triple quadrupole-type mass spectrometry (MS) apparatus were used to determine the VSCs. The results indicated that the effect of intermittent addition of 40 mg/L ferric iron or 40 mg/L hydrogen peroxide is limited for VSCs inhibition. The H2S and VOSCs concentrations increased significantly in the late-stage experiments, even around 20% and 30% respectively higher than the initial average concentrations. However, the intermittent addition of 40 mg N/L nitrate has a relatively stable control effect of H2S and VOSCs which maintaining 60% removal rate. Moreover, methyl mercaptan (MeSH) was the most abundant compound of the total VOSCs released and the results of the theoretical odor concentration study also indicate MeSH is the main VOSC causing the significant odor problem. Therefore, more attention should be focused on the VOSCs which have extremely low odor threshold.

Abstract:Zerovalent iron (ZVI) is commonly used for water treatment under aerobic conditions such as sequestration of metals. Sulfide-modified ZVI (S-ZVI) is attracting increasing attention for its easy preparation and high reactivity with environmental pollutants. The processes responsible for contaminant removal can be a complex mixture of redox, sorption, and coprecipitation processes. In this paper, ZVI and S-ZVI were used to sequester antimonite (Sb(III)). The rates of Sb(III) sequestration were determined in open, well-mixed, batch reactors. The effects of various experimental variables were investigated, including pH, iron dose, initial concentrations of Sb(III), aging time of the ZVI and S-ZVI, addition of Fe2+, mixing rate, etc. The results showed that S-ZVI can significantly enhance the Sb(III) sequestration, and under basic conditions in this study, the k obs (0.018 min−1) obtained in the S-ZVI system was approximately 15 times higher than the 0.0012 min−1 obtained in the ZVI system. Solid phase characterizations were conducted to assess the influence of sulfidation on the morphology and surface geochemistry of ZVI. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the presence of sulfur. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated the oxidation of Sb(III) to Sb(V) and adsorption and coprecipitation onto the iron oxides is the mainly sequestration process. The FeS layer on ZVI is more conductive than oxides and therefore accelerates electron transfer. In addition sulfidation promotes the corrosion of iron and the formation of ferrous iron, which further enhances the ferric iron oxide formation, thereby favoring adsorption and oxidation of Sb(III).

Abstract:Sulfidated zero-valent iron (S-ZVI) has shown significant potential for the removal of arsenic(III). However, little attention has been paid to the mechanism of As(III) sequestration enhancement and how the phase transformation for S-ZVI strengthens this process in aerobic conditions. In this work, sulfidated ZVI was created by ball-milling (S-ZVIbm) and liquid-mixing (S-ZVIlm) of ZVI with elemental sulfur(S0) to investigate the performance and mechanisms of As(III) sequestration in air-saturated water. Sulfidation was found to significantly enhance the As(III) removal rate constant, which was 2.8 ∼ 6.7 times (S-ZVIbm) and 3.1 ∼ 17.1 times (S-ZVIlm) higher than that without sulfidation. FeS was identified as the predominant sulfur species in the S-ZVI samples using S K-edge XANES spectra. The enhanced electron transfer and ZVI corrosion after sulfidation were verified via electrochemical tests. XANES and Mössbauer spectra suggested that lepidocrocite(γ-FeOOH) was the predominant corrosion product generated on the ZVI surface with the presence of oxygen, and DFT calculations further confirmed the improved performance of γ-FeOOH for As(III) sequestration. Besides, As(III) oxidation occurred dominantly on the heterogeneous surface rather than in solution, and the As(III) sequestration pathway of adsorption followed by oxidation was proposed. This study provides new insight into the enhanced As(III) sequestration by S-ZVI in aerobic conditions.
Influence of Inherent Iron and Oxygen Concentrations on Selenite Sorption Process Using Bentonite

Abstract:The oxygen concentration and inherent Fe in bentonite have a significant influence on the Se(IV) sorption process. In this study, the sorption of selenite on natural bentonite was investigated using a batch experiment method, and the distribution coefficient (K d) values were obtained in the pH range from 2.0 to 10.0 under oxic/anoxic conditions. The K d values always reached a maximum value at a pH of 4 under oxic conditions and at a pH of 8 under anoxic conditions; meanwhile, the K d value under anoxic conditions was larger than the value under oxic conditions, especially in regard to the maximum K d values. The oxygen conditions have a significant influence on the ratio of redox-sensitive Fe2+/Fe3+, which was closely related to the difference in the K d values under both oxic/anoxic conditions. Ferric selenite and green rust could be responsible for the maximum K d values under oxic/anoxic conditions. In the leaching experiments, we found that the Fe2+ in bentonite could replace Mg2+ and Al3+ in the octahedral sheet. Spectroscopy methods, such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) were used to characterize the surface properties of the samples after reaction. Overall, this study shows that the addition of Fe2+-containing materials into backfill/buffer materials under anoxic condition could enhance the sorption of 79Se(IV).

Abstract:Nano zero-valent iron (NZVI) technology has shown good potential for the treatment of selenium in wastewater. In this study, NZVI was loaded on activated carbon (AC) by carbothermal reduction method to synthesize high-efficiency adsorbent (NZVI@AC). The agglomeration of NZVI was suppressed and its reactivity was improved. The optimum preparation temperature of NZVI@AC (600 °C) was determined by comparing its purity. Moreover, the synergistic effect between the active component (NZVI) and the support (AC) was investigated on the basis of the density functional theory method. The smaller HOMO-LUMO gap (0.87 eV) and charge distribution of NZVI@AC indicated favorable electron transfer and enhanced chemical reactivity. The adsorption and reduction to Se(0)/Se(-II) were elucidated as the underlying mechanisms for the removal of selenite by comparative analysis of the morphological transformation of iron and selenium species. Furthermore, the selenite removal performance of NZVI@AC was investigated on account of the impact of dissolved oxygen and pH values, and the interaction mechanism of these factors was revealed. The decrease of solution pH and dissolved oxygen concentration are effective ways to improve the removal efficiency of selenite.

Abstract:Sulfidation of zerovalent iron (SZVI) enhances electron transfer ability due to the formation of FeS x , which facilitates pollutant removal. However, for pollutants that are difficult to adsorb onto SZVI, the longer electron transfer distance results in inefficient removal. The presence of iron (hydr)oxides on ZVI and SZVI is inevitable, and it can adsorb highly mobile pollutants (such as Se(VI)). Here, we regulated the composition of iron (hydr)oxides on ZVI and SZVI surfaces by aging treatment, which improves their Se(VI) removal performance. Based on this, αFeOOH which has a strong affinity for Se(VI), is introduced onto SZVI to synthesize the high-quality composite SZVI-αFeOOH. The characterization results showed that Fe-OH from αFeOOH and FeS x successfully combined and uniformly distributed on SZVI-αFeOOH, creating active sites, and the Se(VI) removal rate ( k obs = 0.2211 min −1 ) increased ∼ 7.4 times over SZVI ( k obs = 0.0297 min −1 ). The adsorption and reduction of Se(VI) were optimized by regulating the mass ratio of αFeOOH to SZVI. In addition, different initial Se(VI) concentrations and solution pH were designed to explore the effects on Se(VI) removal and evaluate the best removal reaction condition. The mechanism of Se(VI) removal by SZVI-αFeOOH is as follows: Se(VI) is firstly adsorbed on αFeOOH, which shortens the electron transfer distance, and then the absorbed Se(VI) is reduced to readily immobilized states by SZVI. This work proposes a targeted strategy to modify SZVI to efficiently remove pollutants with strong mobile and difficult adsorption.

Abstract:The decontamination ability of sulfidated zero-valent iron (S-ZVI) can be enhanced by the effective assembly of iron sulfides (FeS x ) on neglected heterogeneous surfaces by liquid-phase precipitation. However, S-ZVI preparation with the usual pickling is detrimental to orderly interfacial assembly and leads to an imbalance between electron transfer optimization and electron storage. In this work, S-ZVI was prepared in solutions containing trace divalent cation, and it removed Cr(VI) up to 323.25 times higher than ZVI. This result is achieved by surface sites protonation of divalent cations regulating the phase evolution on the ZVI surface and inducing FeS x chemical assembly. Regulation of divalent cation and S(-II) content further promotes FeS x targeted assembly and reduces electron storage consumption as much as possible. The barrier for FeS x assembly is found to lie at the ZVI interface rather than in the deposition between FeS x . Chemical assembly at heterogeneous interfaces is a prerequisite for the ordered assembly of FeS x . In addition, S-ZVI prepared in simulated groundwater showed extensive preparation pH and universality for remediation scenarios. These findings provide new insights into the development of in-situ sulfidation mechanisms with particular implications for S-ZVI applied to soil and groundwater remediation by the regulation of heterogeneous interfacial assembly.

Simultaneous Removal of Selenite and Selenate by Nanosized Zerovalent Iron in Anoxic Systems: The Overlooked Role of Selenite

Abstract:The application of nanosized zerovalent iron (nZVI) for reductive immobilization of selenite (Se(IV)) or selenate (Se(VI)) alone has been extensively investigated. However, as the predominant species, Se(IV) and Se(VI) usually coexist in the environment. Thus, it is essential to remove both species simultaneously in the solution by nZVI. Negligible Se(VI) removal (∼7%) by nZVI was observed in the absence of Se(IV). In contrast, the Se(VI) was completely removed in the presence of Se(IV), and the removal rate and electron selectivity of Se(VI) increased from 0.12 ± 0.01 to 0.29 ± 0.02 h-1 and from 1% to 4.5%, respectively, as the Se(IV) concentration increased from 0.05 to 0.20 mM. Se(IV) was rapidly removed by nZVI, and Se(VI) exerted minor influence on Se(IV) removal. Se(IV) promoted the generation of corrosion products that were mainly composed of magnetite (26%) and lepidocrocite (67%) based on the Fe K-edge XANES spectra and k3-weighted EXAFS analysis. Fe(II) released during the Se(IV) reduction was not the main reductant for Se(VI) but accelerated the transformation of F(0) to magnetite and lepidocrocite. The formation of lepidocrocite contributed to the enrichment of Se(VI) on the nZVI surface, and magnetite promoted electron transfer from Fe(0) to Se(VI). This study demonstrated that Se(IV) acted as an oxidant to activate nZVI, thus improving the reactivity of nZVI toward Se(VI), which displays a potential application of nZVI in the remediation of Se(IV)- and Se(VI)-containing water.

Abstract:Zerovalent iron (ZVI) has been widely used in the removal of environmental contaminants from water. In this study, ZVI was used to remove selenate [Se(VI)] at a level of 1000 microg L(-1) in the presence of varying concentrations of Cl-, SO(2-)4, NO(-)3, HCO(-)3, and PO(3-)4. Results showed that Se(VI) was rapidly removed during the corrosion of ZVI to iron oxyhydroxides (Fe(OH)). During the 16 h of the experiments, 100 and 56% of the added Se(VI) was removed in 10 mM Cl- and SO(2-)4 solutions under a closed contained system, respectively. Under an open condition, 100 and 93% of the added Se(VI) were removed in the Cl- and SO(2-)4 solutions, respectively. Analysis of Se species in ZVI-Fe(OH) revealed that selenite [Se(IV)] and nonextractable Se increased during the first 2 to 4 h of reaction, with a decrease of Se(VI) in the Cl- experiment and no detection of Se(VI) in the SO(2-)4 experiment. Two mechanisms can be attributed to the rapid removal of Se(VI) from the solutions. One is the reduction of Se(VI) to Se(IV), followed by rapid adsorption of Se(IV) to Fe(OH). The other is the adsorption of Se(VI) directly to Fe(OH), followed by its reduction to Se(IV). The results also show that there was little effect on Se(VI) removal in the presence of Cl- (5, 50, and 100 mM), NO(-)3 (1, 5, and 10 mM), SO(2-)4 (5 mM), HCO(-)3 (1 and 5 mM), or PO(3-)4 (1 mM) and only a slight effect in the presence of SO(2-)4 (50 and 100 mM), HCO(-)3 (10 mM), and PO(3-)4 (5 mM) during a 2-d experiment, whereas 10 mM PO(3-)4 significantly inhibited Se(VI) removal. This work suggests that ZVI may be an effective agent to remove Se from Se-contaminated agricultural drainage water.

Abstract:Although the removal of Se(VI) from water by using zero-valent iron (ZVI) is a promising method, passivation of ZVI severely inhibits its performance. To overcome such issue, we proposed an efficient technique to enhance Se(VI) removal via pre-corrosion of ZVI with H2O2/HCl in a short time (15 min). The resultant pcZVI suspension was weakly acidic (pH 4.56) and contained abundant aqueous Fe2+. 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy showed that pcZVI mainly consisted of Fe0 (66.2%), hydrated ferric oxide (26.3%), and Fe3O4 (7.5%). Efficient removal of Se(VI) from sulfate-rich solution was achieved by pcZVI compared with ZVI (in the absence and presence of H2O2) and acid-pretreated ZVI. Moreover, the efficient removal of Se(VI) by pcZVI sustained over a broad pH range (3-9) due to its strong buffering power. The presence of chloride, carbonate, nitrate, and common cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+) posed negligible influence on the removal of Se(VI) by pcZVI, while the inhibitory effect induced by sulfate, silicate, and phosphate indicated the significance of Se(VI) adsorption as a prerequisite step for its removal. The consumption of aqueous Fe2+ was associated with Se(VI) removal, and X-ray absorption near edge structure revealed that the main pathway for Se(VI) removal by pcZVI was a stepwise reduction of Se(VI) to Se(IV) and then Se0 as the dominant final state (78.2%). Moreover, higher electron selectivity of pcZVI was attributed to the enhanced enrichment of Se oxyanions prior to their reduction.

Abstract:Se-79, one of the key radionuclides for nuclear waste disposal, threatens the quality of the environment, as well as human health. Therefore, it needs to be permanently isolated from the biosphere. The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of Fe(II)/Fe(III) on the removal of Se-79 using bentonite in the pH range of 2.0-10.0 under oxic/anoxic conditions. Under oxic conditions, Se(IV) prefers to form inner-sphere complexes with Fe(III)-oxyhydroxide, derived from the oxidization of Fe(II) using oxygen. Interestingly, Se(IV) will interact with Fe(III) and form a poorly soluble ferric selenite at pH similar to 4 under oxic conditions. Under anoxic conditions, however, the concentration of Fe(II) is closely related to the sorption process of Se(IV) on bentonite. When the concentration of Fe(II) was less than 1%, Fe(II) combined with the hydroxyl, forming Fe(OH)(2), which generated a disproportionation at pH similar to 8 and formed a new sorbent, Fe3O4. However, when the concentration of Fe(II) was increased to 5%, reduction precipitation was the primary way to remove Se(IV) in aqueous solution. XANES (X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure) spectra showed that higher pH values are beneficial for the formation of the final thermodynamic reduction product, Fe selenide. These results suggested that Fe(II) significantly affect the Se(IV) sorption. Overall, this study confirmed the significant role of Fe(II) on the retardation of Se-79 and on remediation for Se(IV) contamination in the hydrosphere. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Sulfidation has been regarded as an effective strategy to enhance the sequestration of contaminants by zerovalent iron (ZVI). However, the effect of sulfidation on ZVI for V(V) removal has not been explored, and the mechanism has not been fully elucidated. Here, this study evaluated V(V) removal by sulfidated microscale ZVI (S-mZVI) and sufficiently ascertained its underlying mechanism. First, the sulfidation of mZVI was studied and the characterization confirmed a uniformly-distributed FeSx shell fabricated on mZVI. Then, applying S-mZVI for V(V) removal was tested as a function of S/Fe molar ratios, pH, dissolved oxygen, and common anions. The greatest removal (98.1%) of V(V) was achieved by S-mZVI prepared under S/Fe of 0.05, 98 times higher than that by mZVI. The decreased pH showed a positive effect and V(V) removal reached 100% at pH 3.0. The common anions (Cl-, SO42-, NO3- and HCO3-) showed slight inhibition on V(V) removal. Finally, V(V) removal by S-mZVI was clarified to be mediated via a combined function of reduction from V(V) to V(IV) and V(III), adsorption, and precipitation. These findings provided valuable insights into applying ZVI materials for V(V) removal.

Abstract:Increasing evidences suggest that nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) is an effective agent for treatment and removal of selenium from water. For example, 1.3 mM selenite was quickly removed from water within 3 min with 5 g/L nZVI. In this work, reaction mechanisms of selenite [Se(IV)] in a single core-shell structured nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) particle were studied with the method of spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (Cs-STEM) integrated with X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS). This method was utilized to visualize solid phase translocation and transformation of Se(IV) such as diffusion, reduction, deposition and the effect of surface defects in a single nanoparticle. Se(IV) was reduced to Se(-II) and Se(0), which then formed a 0.5 nm layer of selenium at the iron oxide-Fe(0) interface at a depth of 6 nm from the surface. The results provided near atomic-resolution proof on the intraparticle diffusion-reduction of Se(IV) induced by nZVI. The STEM mapping also discovered that defects on the surface layer accelerate the diffusion of selenium and increase the capacity of nZVI for selenium sequestration.

Abstract:Sulfidation has gained increasing interest in recent years for improving the sequestration of contaminants by zerovalent iron (ZVI). In view of the bright prospects of the sulfidated ZVI (S-ZVI), this review comprehensively summarized the latest developments in sulfidation of ZVI, particularly that of nanoscale ZVI (S-nZVI). The milestones in development of S-ZVI technology including its background, enlightenment, synthesis, characterization, water remediation and treatment, etc., are summarized. Under most circumstances, sulfidation can enhance the sequestration of various organic compounds and metal(loid)s by ZVI to various extents. In particular, the reactivity of S-ZVI toward contaminants is strongly dependent on S/Fe molar ratio, sulfidation method, and solution chemistry. Additionally, sulfidation can improve the selectivity of ZVI toward targeted contaminant over water under anaerobic conditions. The mechanisms of sulfidation-induced improvement in contaminants sequestration by ZVI are also summarized. Finally, this review identifies the current knowledge gaps and future research needs of S-ZVI for environmental application.

Abstract:In present work, an efficient purification of selenite-contaminated water using electrolysis-assisted nano zerovalent iron (E-nZVI), which achieved a removal capacity of 15.83 mg Se(IV)/g nZVI and exceeded the none assisted nZVI system by 135% was tested. Although Se(IV) removal dramatically increased with applied voltages over 2.0 V in E-nZVI system, the kinetics indicate that higher applied voltage (-4.0 V or more) and lower resistance could not result in apparent promotion on the reaction rate constant. Furthermore, the results from separate anode-cathode tests and surface-sensitive quantitative characterization reveal the synergistic effects of nZVI and cathodic reduction on elemental selenium precipitation, and nZVI corrosion aggravated by electrochemical oxidization improved removal performance in the anode chamber. In conclusion, the electrolysis assisted nZVI showed good removal efficiency of Se(IV) and is a potential water treatment method for removing reducible contaminants.
Enhanced Removal of Selenate from Mining Effluent by H2O2/HCl-pretreated Zero-Valent Iron.

Abstract:Direct use of zero-valent iron (ZVI) in reductive removal of selenate (Se(VI)) is inefficient due to the intrinsic passive layer of ZVI. Here we observed that ZVI pretreated with H2O2 (P-ZVI-O) performs much better in Se(VI) removal from a mining effluent than other three modes of ZVI alone, acid washing ZVI (P-ZVI-A), and simultaneous addition of H2O2 and ZVI (ZVI-O) as well. The P-ZVI-O exhibits exceptionally high Se(VI) removal at a low dosage, wide pH range, with Se dropping down from 93.5 mg/L to <0.4 μg/L after 7-h reaction. Interestingly, the initial pH (2-6) of the mining effluent exerted little influence on the final Se(VI) removal. H2O2/HCl pretreatment results in the formation of various reducing corrosion products (e.g. Fe3O4, FeO and Fe2+), which greatly favors the efficient Se(VI) removal. In addition, surface-bound Fe2+ ions participated in the reduction of Se(VI). Combined with the influence of Se valence as well as pH and Fe2+ (whether dissolved or surface bound), it is deduced that the P-ZVI-O mode induced efficient Se(VI) removal via the adsorption-reduction and/or co-precipitation. This study demonstrates that H2O2/HCl pretreatment of ZVI is a very promising option to enhance the efficiency of reductive removal of Se(VI) from real effluents.

Abstract:Selenium (Se(VI)) is environmentally toxic. One of the most popular reducing agents for Se(VI) remediation is zero-valent iron (ZVI). However, most ZVI studies were carried out in water matrices, and the recovery of reduced Se has not been investigated. A water-sediment system constructed using natural sediment was employed here to study in-situ Se remediation and recovery. A combined effect of ZVI and unacclimated microorganisms from natural sediment was found in Se(VI) removal in the water phase with a removal efficiency of 92.7 ± 1.1% within 7 d when 10 mg L −1 Se(VI) was present. Soluble Se(VI) was removed from the water and precipitated to the sediment phase (74.8 ± 0.1%), which was enhanced by the addition of ZVI (83.3 ± 0.3%). The recovery proportion of the immobilized Se was 34.2 ± 0.1% and 92.5 ± 0.2% through wet and dry magnetic separation with 1 g L −1 ZVI added, respectively. The 16 s rRNA sequencing revealed the variations in the microbial communities in response to ZVI and Se, which the magnetic separation could potentially mitigate in the long term. This study provides a novel technique to achieve in-situ Se remediation and recovery by combining ZVI reduction and magnetic separation.

Synergetic Effect of a Pillared Bentonite Support on SE(VI) Removal by Nanoscale Zero Valent Iron

Abstract:A positively-charged pillared bentonite (Al-bent) was used as the carrier of nanoscale zerovalent iron (NZVI) particles for accelerating the reductive removal of anionic Se(VI) from water by NZVI. A synergetic effect on Se(VI) removal by this NZVI/Al-bent composite was observed, with removal efficiency (95.7%) much higher than the sum (72.0%) of NZVI reduction (62.1%) and Al-bent adsorption (9.86%). The multiple roles of Al-bent in the reaction system of Se(VI) with NZVI were comprehensively investigated using XAFS techniques, XRD analysis, kinetic studies and pH monitoring. The results indicate that the positively-charged Al-bent as a good adsorbent to anionic Se(VI) accelerated the reductive transformation of Se(VI) into less soluble Se(-II). Al-bent also acted as a pH buffering agent, and contributed to the enhanced stability and reusability of NZVI. In addition, Al-bent could transfer the insoluble reduction products away from the iron surface according to EXAFS studies. Particularly, Al-bent could activate Fe(II) ions generated in the reaction system through an appropriate bonding at pH 8.0, and provide NZVI with an extra reduction capacity. The results indicate the significance of correct matching of bentonite support to target contaminant for developing novel remediation technique based on this natural mineral. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Buffer effect of MgO on Na2SO3 to stabilize S(IV) for the enhancement in simultaneous absorption of NOx and SO2 from non-ferrous smelting gas

Abstract:Oxidation-reduction-absorption based on sulfite is a promising process for simultaneous removal of NOx and SO2. However, excessive oxidation of sulfite and competitive absorption between NOx and SO2 limit its application. A matching strategy between antioxidants and alkaline agents has been proposed to solve these problems and enhance the absorption process. The comparison results of inhibitors showed that hydroquinone exhibited long-term high-efficiency inhibition of S(IV) (SO32-/HSO3-) oxidation. The comparison of alkaline agents showed that the Na2SO3 solution with heterogeneous mixture of MgO and hydroquinone exhibited better absorption performance than that with other combinations. The absorption amounts of NOx in 0.15 mol/L Na2SO3 50 mL solution added 0.1% hydroquinone (HQ) with 0.09 mol/L MgO were 2.24 mmol, which improved 5 times than that without additives. In addition, studies on the influence of pH showed that the pH of MgO mixture could be stabilized at 9-10 for a long time, while the pH of Na2CO3 mixture decreased faster. Further studies suggested that the hydration of MgO resulted in the solution with MgO keeping high pH. This is also the main reason why the combination of MgO and hydroquinone is superior to the combination of Na2CO3 and hydroquinone in desulfurization and denitration performance.
