Abstract:Metamaterials, artificial composite structures with exotic material properties, have emerged as a new frontier of science involving physics, material science, engineering and chemistry. This critical review focuses on the fundamentals, recent progresses and future directions in the research of electromagnetic metamaterials. An introduction to metamaterials followed by a detailed elaboration on how to design unprecedented electromagnetic properties of metamaterials is presented. A number of intriguing phenomena and applications associated with metamaterials are discussed, including negative refraction, sub-diffraction-limited imaging, strong optical activities in chiral metamaterials, interaction of meta-atoms and transformation optics. Finally, we offer an outlook on future directions of metamaterials research including but not limited to three-dimensional optical metamaterials, nonlinear metamaterials and "quantum" perspectives of metamaterials (142 references).

Abstract:Metasurfaces are ultrathin metamaterials consisting of planar electromagnetic (EM) microstructures (e.g., meta-atoms) with pre-determined EM responses arranged in specific sequences. Based on careful structural designs on both meta-atoms and global sequences, one can realize homogenous and inhomogeneous metasurfaces that can possess exceptional capabilities to manipulate EM waves, serving as ideal candidates to realize ultracompact and highly efficient EM devices for next-generation integration-optics applications. In this paper, we present an overview on the development of metasurfaces, including both homogeneous and inhomogeneous ones, focusing particularly on their working principles, the fascinating wave-manipulation effects achieved both statically and dynamically, and the representative applications so far realized. Finally, we also present our own perspectives on possible future directions of this fast-developing research field in the conclusion.

Abstract:Freely controlling electromagnetic (EM) waves in desired manners are not only highly important for scientific researches, but also an urgent need in the fields of communications, energy, national defense, etc. To overcome the limitations of natural materials on controlling EM waves, people proposed to construct artificial metamaterials based on subwavelength-sized microstructures with tailored EM properties. Metamaterials have exhibited many fascinating EM effects, such as negative refraction, optical cloaking, and so on. However, after years of development, metamaterials still suffer from many challenges including complexities in structures, high losses, difficulties in optical integrations, etc. Recently, together with other scientists, we proposed the concept of metasurfaces. Utilizing the abrupt phase changes of EM wave scatterings at the meta-atoms and fully exploring the microscopic order of the meta-atoms arrangement, metasurfaces have exhibited much stronger control capabilities on EM wave amplitude, phase, polarization and wavefront distribute, overcoming the bottleneck issues faced by bulk metamaterials. In this article, we will mainly review our key research works on using metasurfaces to control EM waves, including polarization control, wavefront control and dynamic control.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have gained growing interest in recent years due to their simplicity in manufacturing and lower insertion losses. Meanwhile, they can provide unprecedented control over the spatial distribution of transmitted and reflected optical fields in a compact form. The metasurfaces are a kind of planar array of resonant subwavelength components that, depending on the intended optical wavefronts to be sculpted, can be strictly periodic or quasi-periodic, or even aperiodic. For instance, gradient metasurfaces, a subtype of metasurfaces, are designed to exhibit spatially changing optical responses, which result in spatially varying amplitudes of scattered fields and the associated polarization of these fields. This paper starts off by presenting concepts of anomalous reflection and refraction, followed by a brief discussion on the Pancharatanm–Berry Phase (PB) and Huygens' metasurfaces. As an introduction to wavefront manipulation, we next present their key applications. These include planar metalens, cascaded meta-systems, tunable metasurfaces, spectrometer retroreflectors, vortex beams, and holography. The review concludes with a summary, preceded by a perspective outlining our expectations for potential future research work and applications.

Abstract:As a two-dimensional planar material with low depth profile, a metasurface can generate non-classical phase distributions for the transmitted and reflected electromagnetic waves at its interface. Thus, it offers more flexibility to control the wave front. A traditional metasurface design process mainly adopts the forward prediction algorithm, such as Finite Difference Time Domain, combined with manual parameter optimization. However, such methods are time-consuming, and it is difficult to keep the practical meta-atom spectrum being consistent with the ideal one. In addition, since the periodic boundary condition is used in the meta-atom design process, while the aperiodic condition is used in the array simulation, the coupling between neighboring meta-atoms leads to inevitable inaccuracy. In this review, representative intelligent methods for metasurface design are introduced and discussed, including machine learning, physics-information neural network, and topology optimization method. We elaborate on the principle of each approach, analyze their advantages and limitations, and discuss their potential applications. We also summarise recent advances in enabled metasurfaces for quantum optics applications. In short, this paper highlights a promising direction for intelligent metasurface designs and applications for future quantum optics research and serves as an up-to-date reference for researchers in the metasurface and metamaterial fields.

Abstract:Metasurfaces offer great opportunities to control electromagnetic (EM) waves, but currently most metadevices work either in pure reflection or pure transmission mode, leaving half of the EM space completely unexplored. Here, we propose an alternative type of metasurface, composed of specifically designed meta-atoms with polarization-dependent transmission and reflection properties, to efficiently manipulate EM waves in the full space. As a proof of concept, three microwave metadevices are designed, fabricated, and experimentally characterized. The first two metadevices can bend or focus EM waves at different sides (i.e., transmission and reflection sides) of the metasurfaces, depending on the incident polarization, while the third one changes from a wave bender for the reflected wave to a focusing lens for the transmitted wave as the excitation polarization is rotated, with all of these functionalities exhibiting very high efficiencies (in the range of 85%-91%) and total thickness similar to lambda/8. Our findings significantly expand the capabilities of metasurfaces in controlling EM waves, and can stimulate high-performance multifunctional metadevices facing more challenging and diversified application demands.

Abstract:Metamaterials are composed of periodic subwavelength metal/dielectric structures that resonantly couple to the electric and/or magnetic components of the incident electromagnetic fields, exhibiting properties that are not found in nature. Planar metamaterials with subwavelength thickness, or metasurfaces, consisting of single-layer or few-layer stacks of planar structures, can be readily fabricated using lithography and nanoprinting methods, and the ultrathin thickness in the wave propagation direction can greatly suppress the undesirable losses. Metasurfaces enable a spatially varying optical response, mold optical wavefronts into shapes that can be designed at will, and facilitate the integration of functional materials to accomplish active control and greatly enhanced nonlinear response. This paper reviews recent progress in the physics of metasurfaces operating at wavelengths ranging from microwave to visible. We provide an overview of key metasurface concepts such as anomalous reflection and refraction, and introduce metasurfaces based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase and Huygens' metasurfaces, as well as their use in wavefront shaping and beam forming applications, followed by a discussion of polarization conversion in few-layer metasurfaces and their related properties. An overview of dielectric metasurfaces reveals their ability to realize unique functionalities coupled with Mie resonances and their low ohmic losses. We also describe metasurfaces for wave guidance and radiation control, as well as active and nonlinear metasurfaces. Finally, we conclude by providing our opinions of opportunities and challenges in this rapidly developing research field.

Abstract:Manipulating light is highly desired in photonics research. Restricted by the variable range of permittivity for natural materials, conventional photonic elements are often optically thick and their light-manipulation abilities are quite limited by chemical composition. Plasmonic metamaterials are artificial composite by sub-wavelength local resonance structures of electric and/or magnetic type with novel electromagnetic property such as negative refraction and perfect lens, etc. [1, 2]. Recently, ultra-thin metasurfaces with abrupt-varying material properties provided by the geometries of metallic nanostructures on the interface were found to exhibit boardband light-manipulation abilities [3- 5].

Abstract:In the past two decades, artificial structures known as metamaterials have been found to exhibit extraordinary material properties that enable the unprecedented manipulation of electromagnetic waves, elastic waves, molecules, and particles. Phenomena such as negative refraction, bandgaps, near perfect wave absorption, wave focusing, negative Poissons ratio, negative thermal conductivity, etc., all are possible with these materials. Metamaterials were originally theorized and fabricated in electrodynamics, but research into their applications has expanded into acoustics, thermodynamics, seismology, classical mechanics, and mass transport. In this Research Update we summarize the history, current state of progress, and emerging directions of metamaterials by field, focusing the unifying principles at the foundation of each discipline. We discuss the different designs and mechanisms behind metamaterials as well as the governing equations and effective material parameters for each field. Also, current and potential applications for metamaterials are discussed. Finally, we provide an outlook on future progress in the emerging field of metamaterials.

Abstract:Metamaterial is a kind of material/structure that is artificially designed and has exceptional electromagnetic properties and/or other physical properties, not found in nature. A class of electromagnetic metamaterial with only one or a few layers of periodic or aperiodic arranged cell structures in the direction of electromagnetic waves propagation can be referred to as a metasurface. Metasurface can be considered as a two-dimensional representation of metamaterial and can realize the controlling of the amplitude, phase, and polarization state/direction of the incident electromagnetic wave. According to the novel electromagnetic characteristics of metasurface and its big advantages, a series of new planar devices and systems based on metasurface can be developed. The goal of this review article is firstly to provide introductions for basic metasurface, its significance properties, and application principles. Meanwhile, the main research progresses of regular metasurfaces and the newly developed reconfigurable metasurfaces are analyzed, focusing on the types of amplitude modulation, phase modulation, polarization modulation, and multidimensional modulation. Finally, the research significances of metasurface development trend and important engineering practical applications are analyzed in the end.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have provided a new paradigm to control electromagnetic waves by manipulating the spatially varying distribution of subwavelength artificial structures across the interface. Directional metasurfaces, a kind of metasurface with direction-dependent properties, possess different wave functionalities upon the incidence wave coming from opposite directions. The diversified wave-manipulation capabilities of directional metasurfaces show advantages of compactness, flatness, scalability, direction-dependence, etc, exhibiting promising potentials for a plethora of applications. Here, we present a review on the recent progress of directional metasurfaces, including the concept origin, the practical realization of meta-structures, the design method for direction-dependent wavefront tailoring, and the application aspects of directional metasurfaces. In the conclusion, we present possible further research directions in this field based on our own perspectives.

Abstract:The emerging field of metasurfaces has offered unprecedented functionalities for shaping wave fronts and optical responses. Here, we realize a new class of metasurfaces with nanorod array, which can generate abrupt interfacial phase changes to control local wave front at subwavelength scale. The physical mechanism under the phase modulation is geometry phase in essence, thus can achieve broadband operation, as well as helicity-dependent property. Multiple applications have been demonstrated, such as anomalous refraction, ultrathin dual-polarity metalenses, helicity-dependent unidirectional surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excitation, and three-dimensional (3D) holography.

Abstract:Optical metasurface as a booming research field has put forward profound progress in optics and photonics. Compared with metallic-based components, which suffer from significant thermal loss and low efficiency, high-index all-dielectric nanostructures can readily combine electric and magnetic Mie resonances together, leading to efficient manipulation of optical properties such as amplitude, phase, polarization, chirality, and anisotropy. These advances have enabled tremendous developments in practical photonic devices that can confine and guide light at the nanoscale. Here we review the recent development of local electromagnetic resonances such as Mie-type scattering, bound states in the continuum, Fano resonances, and anapole resonances in dielectric metasurfaces and summarize the fundamental principles of dielectric resonances. We discuss the recent research frontiers in dielectric metasurfaces including wavefront-shaping, metalenses, multifunctional and computational approaches. We review the strategies and methods to realize the dynamic tuning of dielectric metasurfaces. Finally, we conclude with an outlook on the challenges and prospects of dielectric metasurfaces.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are planar metamaterials exhibiting certain inhomogeneous phase distributions for transmitted or reflected waves, which can efficiently reshape the wave-fronts of incident beams in desired manners based on the Huygens principle. Due to their exotic abilities to freely manipulate electromagnetic (EM) waves on a flat and ultrathin platform, metasurfaces have attracted intensive attention recently, resulting in numerous new concepts and effects that could possibly find applications in many different aspects. In this article, the key achievements in this field are briefly summarized, with focus put on the efficiency issue of metasurfaces. After introducing the basic concept of metasurfaces and their early realizations, successively the mechanisms and realizations of high-efficiency metasurfaces are described: for manipulating linearly polarized EM waves in reflection and transmission geometries, and for manipulating circularly polarized EM waves based on the geometric-phase concept, using plasmonic materials as well as dielectric ones. Then, several important applications of high-efficiency metasurfaces are summarized, including polarization control, metaholograms, metalenses, and surface wave couplers. Finally, this review is concluded with personal perspectives on the future directions of this rapidly growing research field.

Abstract:Metamaterials are artificial structures with the ability to efficiently control the light field. On the basis of the intrinsic physical principles, various phenomena can be realized by designing different metastructures. In recent years, the introduction of artificially intelligent algorithms has not only led to an efficient design method but also enables metamaterials‐based photonic devices to exhibit excellent performances and intelligent functionalities. Metamaterials are artificial structures with the ability to efficiently control light‐field, attracting intensive attention in the past few decades. People have studied the working principles, design strategies, and fabrication methods of metamaterials, making this field cross and combine with many disciplines, including physics, material science, electronics, and chemistry. In recent years, with the rapid development of high‐efficiency and multifunctional metasurfaces, which are a two‐dimensional version of metamaterials, great efforts have been made to push this material to practical applications. In particular, the introduction of artificial intelligent (AI) algorithms enables metamaterials‐based photonic devices that exhibit excellent performances and intelligent functionalities. In this review, we first introduce the basic concepts, working principles, design methods, and applications of metamaterials, and then focus on the rapidly developing metamaterials research combined with AI algorithms. Finally, we conclude this review with personal perspectives on the current problems and future directions of metamaterials research and developments.
