Abstract:Controlling light with a thin flat device is highly desirable in modern optics. A particular prospect in this area is a metasurface that independently shows distinct functionalities for different kinds of incoming waves. However, to date this is mostly achieved on anisotropic metasurfaces based on different propagation phases under two orthogonal linear polarizations. On the other hand, achieving multifunctionality for the two circularly polarized (CP) waves is very important in view of the growing significance of spin photonics. However, achieving completely decoupled optical functions for different photon spins is very challenging and remains elusive. Available attempts were only confined to locked spin-flipped phase profile to achieve opposite vortex modes, converged/diverged focusing, and interchanged holographic images. Here, we propose a general strategy to break this limitation by involving hybrid geometric and propagation phases with extremely low polarization cross-talk (an order of magnitude suppression). We experimentally demonstrate our scheme with two versatile CP bifunctional devices operating at microwaves. Besides, the possible applications have been illustrated from the perspective of stealth and information entropy by imposing dual irregular phase patterns in two completely decoupled helicity channels. The finding in this study is expected to trigger great interest in electromagnetic/optical integration and complex electromagnetic wave manipulations with a new degree of freedom.
Photonic Spin Hall Effect with Controlled Transmission by Metasurfaces

Abstract:Photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) with high efficiency and controllable transmission is widely pursued. In the paper, we designed a dielectric metasurface that could yield spin splitting effect with energy transfer efficiency up to 84%. Switching the output photonic spin states is realized by controlling the polarization azimuthal angle of the incident light. Introducing a background phase gradient, we also propose a high-efficiency asymmetric PSHE metasurface that could give rise to arbitrary transmission angles for the left and right circularly-polarized light. These results are numerically validated, which are of the significance in guiding the design of high-performance photonic spin manipulation devices. (C) 2017 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:Metasurfaces have been widely investigated for various applications enabled by their strong light manipulation capabilities. Their monolithic designs offer the convenience to incorporate novel natural materials in order to realize advanced electromagnetic (EM) functionalities. Here, based on the usage of the phase change material vanadium dioxide (VO2). a switchable metasurface that could work at two different working states is proposed. With insulating VO2, we show that helicity-dependent metasurface could be rigorously designed by adopting two phase variables, i.e., initial phase and Pancharatnam-Berry (P-B) phase, which is verified by showing an asymmetric photonic spin Hall effect (APSHE). When VO2 goes into the metallic phase (e.g.. by raising the operating temperature above similar to 341K), the loss factor of the unit cell will be enhanced. and in this case with the assistance of multimode resonances, the metasurface will turn into a perfect broadband circular-polarization-insensitive EM absorber. Based on these, switchable beam splitters and focus-lenses have been designed and discussed in the paper. Abstract:We have recently studied the physics and functionalities of metasurfaces in both reflective and transmissive geometries, with passive and actively tunable functionalities. In the first part, we first present a complete phase diagram to understand/predict the diversified and fascinating functionalities of metasurfaces in metal-insulator-metal (MIM) configuration [1], based on which we combined graphene with metasurface to achieve wide-range active THz phase modulation [2]. We next describe our recent efforts to realize tunable metasurfaces in the microwave regime to realize dynamically-controllable functionalities [3]. In the second part, we will describe our recent efforts to realize surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) meta-couplers with very high efficiencies, based on gradient metasurfaces [4]. Finally, we show that 100%-efficiency photonic spin-Hall effect (PSHE) can be realized in geometric-phase metasurfaces with meta-atoms satisfying certain criterions, which help us design microwave metasurfaces exhibiting nearly 100% PSHE efficiency in both reflection and transmission geometries [5]. Abstract:Freely controlling electromagnetic (EM) waves in desired manners are not only highly important for scientific researches, but also an urgent need in the fields of communications, energy, national defense, etc. To overcome the limitations of natural materials on controlling EM waves, people proposed to construct artificial metamaterials based on subwavelength-sized microstructures with tailored EM properties. Metamaterials have exhibited many fascinating EM effects, such as negative refraction, optical cloaking, and so on. However, after years of development, metamaterials still suffer from many challenges including complexities in structures, high losses, difficulties in optical integrations, etc. Recently, together with other scientists, we proposed the concept of metasurfaces. Utilizing the abrupt phase changes of EM wave scatterings at the meta-atoms and fully exploring the microscopic order of the meta-atoms arrangement, metasurfaces have exhibited much stronger control capabilities on EM wave amplitude, phase, polarization and wavefront distribute, overcoming the bottleneck issues faced by bulk metamaterials. In this article, we will mainly review our key research works on using metasurfaces to control EM waves, including polarization control, wavefront control and dynamic control.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are planar metamaterials exhibiting certain inhomogeneous phase distributions for transmitted or reflected waves, which can efficiently reshape the wave-fronts of incident beams in desired manners based on the Huygens principle. Due to their exotic abilities to freely manipulate electromagnetic (EM) waves on a flat and ultrathin platform, metasurfaces have attracted intensive attention recently, resulting in numerous new concepts and effects that could possibly find applications in many different aspects. In this article, the key achievements in this field are briefly summarized, with focus put on the efficiency issue of metasurfaces. After introducing the basic concept of metasurfaces and their early realizations, successively the mechanisms and realizations of high-efficiency metasurfaces are described: for manipulating linearly polarized EM waves in reflection and transmission geometries, and for manipulating circularly polarized EM waves based on the geometric-phase concept, using plasmonic materials as well as dielectric ones. Then, several important applications of high-efficiency metasurfaces are summarized, including polarization control, metaholograms, metalenses, and surface wave couplers. Finally, this review is concluded with personal perspectives on the future directions of this rapidly growing research field.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are ultrathin metamaterials consisting of planar electromagnetic (EM) microstructures (e.g., meta-atoms) with pre-determined EM responses arranged in specific sequences. Based on careful structural designs on both meta-atoms and global sequences, one can realize homogenous and inhomogeneous metasurfaces that can possess exceptional capabilities to manipulate EM waves, serving as ideal candidates to realize ultracompact and highly efficient EM devices for next-generation integration-optics applications. In this paper, we present an overview on the development of metasurfaces, including both homogeneous and inhomogeneous ones, focusing particularly on their working principles, the fascinating wave-manipulation effects achieved both statically and dynamically, and the representative applications so far realized. Finally, we also present our own perspectives on possible future directions of this fast-developing research field in the conclusion.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have gained growing interest in recent years due to their simplicity in manufacturing and lower insertion losses. Meanwhile, they can provide unprecedented control over the spatial distribution of transmitted and reflected optical fields in a compact form. The metasurfaces are a kind of planar array of resonant subwavelength components that, depending on the intended optical wavefronts to be sculpted, can be strictly periodic or quasi-periodic, or even aperiodic. For instance, gradient metasurfaces, a subtype of metasurfaces, are designed to exhibit spatially changing optical responses, which result in spatially varying amplitudes of scattered fields and the associated polarization of these fields. This paper starts off by presenting concepts of anomalous reflection and refraction, followed by a brief discussion on the Pancharatanm–Berry Phase (PB) and Huygens' metasurfaces. As an introduction to wavefront manipulation, we next present their key applications. These include planar metalens, cascaded meta-systems, tunable metasurfaces, spectrometer retroreflectors, vortex beams, and holography. The review concludes with a summary, preceded by a perspective outlining our expectations for potential future research work and applications.

Unidirectional guided-wave-driven metasurfaces for arbitrary wavefront control

Abstract:Metasurfaces, composed of subwavelength electromagnetic microstructures, known as meta-atoms, are capable of reshaping the wavefronts of incident beams in desired manners, making them great candidates for revolutionizing conventional optics. However, the requirement for external light excitation and the resonant nature of meta-atoms make it difficult to fully integrate metasurfaces on-chip or to control wavefronts at deep-subwavelength scales. Here, we introduce the concept and design of a new class of metasurfaces, driven by unidirectional guided waves, and being capable of arbitrary wavefront control based on the unique dispersion properties of unidirectional guided waves rather than resonant meta-atoms. Upon experimentally demonstrating the feasibility and practicality of the unidirectional nature of our designs in the microwave regime, we numerically validate this new principle through the design of several microwave meta-devices using metal-air-gyromagnetic unidirectional surface magnetoplamons, agilely converting unidirectional guided modes into the wavefronts of 3D Bessel beams, focused waves, and controllable vortex beams. We also numerically demonstrate sub-diffraction focusing, which is currently beyond the capability of conventional metasurfaces. Furthermore, we directly show how these concepts can be transferred to the terahertz regime, and discuss their feasibility in the optical domain, too. Based on this nonresonant (that is, broadband) mechanism and on standard plasmonic platforms, our metasurfaces can be integrated on-chip, enabling the manipulation of electromagnetic waves on deep subwavelength scales and over wide frequency ranges, thereby opening up new opportunities for applications in communications, remote sensing, displays, and so forth.

Dynamic Control of Electromagnetic Wave Polarization and Phase Through Active Metasurfaces

Abstract:The control of electromagnetic wave propagation is an important issue in either fundamental electromagnetic research or device application technologies. In this presentation we incorporate the active element into the metasurface concept to achieve dynamic control of electromagnetic wave reflection. We will present the application of active metasurfaces to the control of the polarization and phase of the electromagnetic wave reflection. Two examples will be reported in the microwave frequency including polarization modulation and 360 degree phase tuning. Both of them are based on specially designed metasurfaces with loaded active circuit elements. These examples demonstrate the significant ability and potential applications of metasurfaces for dynamic control of the electromagnetic wave propagation.

Abstract:Unlike traditional optical components, which rely on the gradual accumulation of light along the optical path over a distance much larger than the wavelength to form a wavefront, metasurfaces manipulate light field properties on the wavelength thickness by specially arranging various meta-atoms. Due to the ease of integration and compact planar structure, metasurfaces play a key role in the light field manipulations. Here, we review the recent advances of metasurfaces in multi-dimensions, including light wavelength, polarization, orbital angular momentum(OAM), and angular response. Progress in these fields has brought new applications in areas such as imaging, display, communication, and information encryption, etc. Finally, we also discuss the challenges and prospects of metasurfaces applications.

Abstract:Metasurfaces offer great opportunities to control electromagnetic (EM) waves, but currently most metadevices work either in pure reflection or pure transmission mode, leaving half of the EM space completely unexplored. Here, we propose an alternative type of metasurface, composed of specifically designed meta-atoms with polarization-dependent transmission and reflection properties, to efficiently manipulate EM waves in the full space. As a proof of concept, three microwave metadevices are designed, fabricated, and experimentally characterized. The first two metadevices can bend or focus EM waves at different sides (i.e., transmission and reflection sides) of the metasurfaces, depending on the incident polarization, while the third one changes from a wave bender for the reflected wave to a focusing lens for the transmitted wave as the excitation polarization is rotated, with all of these functionalities exhibiting very high efficiencies (in the range of 85%-91%) and total thickness similar to lambda/8. Our findings significantly expand the capabilities of metasurfaces in controlling EM waves, and can stimulate high-performance multifunctional metadevices facing more challenging and diversified application demands.
Broadband Spin-Unlocked Metasurfaces for Bifunctional Wavefront Manipulations

Abstract:Recently, Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) metasurfaces have exhibited powerful capabilities to control spin-polarized light. However, the adopted abrupt PB phase, introduced by simply rotating the basic elements, is spin-locked with opposite signs for different spin excitations, greatly limiting their practical applications. Here, we introduce a high-efficiency and broadband spin-unlocked metasurface with two mechanisms of a resonance phase and a geometric phase perfectly combined together. The design strategy is quite simple just through changing one geometric parameter rather than multi parameter optimization. As a proof of concept, the anomalous photonic spin Hall effect based on the spin-unlocked metasurface is demonstrated first, showing high experimental efficiency (over 80%) in a broad frequency range (11.3–16.6 GHz). Furthermore, another spin-unlocked metasurface is built to demonstrate the completely independent wavefront manipulations, i.e., the focusing effect and anomalous reflection. These findings significantly expand the electromagnetic control ability of a metasurface.

Abstract:Nanophotonic systems have attracted tremendous attention due to their exotic abilities to freely control electromagnetic (EM) waves. In particular, much attention has been given to metasurfaces consisting of multiple plasmonic/dielectric meta-atoms coupled in different ways. Compared to simple systems containing only one type of resonator, coupled photonic systems exhibit more fascinating capabilities to manipulate EM waves. However, despite the great advances already achieved in experimental conditions, theoretical understandings of these complex systems are far from satisfactory. In this article, we summarize the theorized tools for developing nanophotonic systems including both coupled resonators and periodic metasurfaces. We aim to understand the EM properties in closed and open systems, and introduce methods of employing them to design new functional metasurfaces for various applications. We will mainly focus on works done in our own group and we hope that this short review can provide useful guidance and act as a reference for researchers in related fields.

Abstract:Metasurfaces, whose electromagnetic (EM) responses can be artificially designed, are two-dimensional arrays composed of subwavelength nanostructures. Accompanied by various fascinating developments in the past decade, metasurfaces have been proved as a powerful platform for the implementation of EM wave manipulation. However, the planar monoatomic metasurfaces widely used in previous works have limited design freedoms, resulting in some disadvantages for the realization of high-performance and new functional EM wave control. The latest developments show that few-layer metasurfaces and polyatomic metasurfaces are good alternatives to overcome the drawbacks of planar monoatomic metasurfaces and realize high-efficient, multi-band and broadband EM functionalities. They provide additional degrees of design freedom via introducing multilayer layouts or combining multiple meta-atoms into a unit cell respectively. Here, recent advances of few-layer and polyatomic metasurfaces are reviewed. The design strategies, EM properties and main advantages of few-layer metasurfaces and polyatomic metasurfaces are overviewed firstly. Then, few-layer metasurfaces and polyatomic metasurfaces in recent progress for EM wave manipulation are classified and discussed from the viewpoint of their design strategy. At last, an outlook on future development trends and potential applications in these fast-developing research areas is presented.

Abstract:Metamaterials are composed of periodic subwavelength metal/dielectric structures that resonantly couple to the electric and/or magnetic components of the incident electromagnetic fields, exhibiting properties that are not found in nature. Planar metamaterials with subwavelength thickness, or metasurfaces, consisting of single-layer or few-layer stacks of planar structures, can be readily fabricated using lithography and nanoprinting methods, and the ultrathin thickness in the wave propagation direction can greatly suppress the undesirable losses. Metasurfaces enable a spatially varying optical response, mold optical wavefronts into shapes that can be designed at will, and facilitate the integration of functional materials to accomplish active control and greatly enhanced nonlinear response. This paper reviews recent progress in the physics of metasurfaces operating at wavelengths ranging from microwave to visible. We provide an overview of key metasurface concepts such as anomalous reflection and refraction, and introduce metasurfaces based on the Pancharatnam-Berry phase and Huygens' metasurfaces, as well as their use in wavefront shaping and beam forming applications, followed by a discussion of polarization conversion in few-layer metasurfaces and their related properties. An overview of dielectric metasurfaces reveals their ability to realize unique functionalities coupled with Mie resonances and their low ohmic losses. We also describe metasurfaces for wave guidance and radiation control, as well as active and nonlinear metasurfaces. Finally, we conclude by providing our opinions of opportunities and challenges in this rapidly developing research field.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are made of two-dimensional arrays of subwavelength nanostructures that form a spatially varying optical response, to control the wave fronts of optical waves. As the feature size of its constituent materials is nanoscale, investigation of the light-nanostructure interactions in the near field is critical for understanding the novel properties of metasurfaces. Here, we used a scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM) to observe the near-field distribution of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) from a ring-shaped metasurface under illumination of circularly polarized light. It was found that with an additional degree of freedom of the geometric phase provided by the regularly arranged metamolecules, control over the near-field interference of the SPPs can be achieved, which is governed by the metasurface geometric symmetry that can be tuned by its topological charge. Meanwhile, the planar chiral character of the metamolecules exerts a deep influence on the near-field interference patterns. Our results can pave the way for active control of SPP propagation in near fields and have potential applications in highly integrated optical communication systems.
