Abstract:The effects of catalyst dosage and reaction temperature on the composition of products and reaction rate of liquid phase catalytic oxidation of cumene with oxygen using acetic acid as solvent in the presence of catalysts consisting of cobalt acetate,manganese acetate and bromine compound were investigated in a 500 mL titanium reactor and the structures of the products were analyzed.The results showed that cumene were all conversed and the yield of benzoic acid reached 95%under the appropriate reaction conditions of 180℃and the molar ratio of Co and Mn to cumene 0.05.a-methylstyrene(MS), acetophenone(AP),a-methylstyrene polyperoxide and benzoic acid(BA) were main products of oxidation of CU.The most important side reaction was copolymerization of a-methylstyrene with oxygen,which had a significant influence on oxidation of cumene.The yield of benzoic acid could be improved by increasing operational temperature and catalyst dosage which could accelerate cleavage of polyperoxide to form benzoic acid.
Strong Local Coordination Structure Effects on Subnanometer PtOx Clusters over CeO2 Nanowires Probed by Low-Temperature CO Oxidation

Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.

Abstract:Surface functionalized and defect enriched carbon nanotubes (oCNTs) by green ozone/H2O treatment can efficiently anchor gold nanoparticles. This Au/oCNT could be stabilized and well dispersed after thermal treatment and showed robust catalytic activity (20.6 mmol gcat-1 h-1) for the oxidative self-coupling of benzylamine to imine in solvent free conditions.

Abstract:A series of V2O5/TiO2-carbon nanotube (CNT) catalysts were prepared and tested to decompose gaseous 1,2-dichlorobenzene (1,2-DCBz). Several physicochemical methods, including nitrogen adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and H2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) were employed to characterise their physicochemical properties. To better understand the effect of CNT properties on the reactivity of V2O5/TiO2-CNT catalysts, the 1,2-DCBz residue remaining in the off-gas and on the catalyst surface were both collected and analysed. The results indicate that the outer diameter and the surface functional groups (hydroxide radical and carboxyl) of CNTs significantly influence upon the catalytic activity of CNT-containing V2O5/TiO2 catalysts: the CNT outer diameter mainly affects the aggregation of CNTs and the π-π interaction between the benzene ring and CNTs, while the introduction of –OH and –COOH groups by acid treatment can further enlarge specific surface area (SSA) and contribute to a higher average oxidation state of vanadium (V aos) and supplemental surface chemisorbed oxygen (Oads). In addition, the enhanced mobility of lattice oxygen (Olatt) also improves the oxidation ability of the catalysts.
Effect of Surface Modification on Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Catalytic Oxidative Dehydrogenation Using CO2 As Oxidant

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with surface modification are prepared by the introduction of different oxygenated groups and metal oxides. It is found that surface modification of MWCNTs can induce significant changes in Raman feature, redox capability and catalytic dehydrogenation performance of these MWCNT composites. Since oxygenated groups with lone electron pairs or carbon–oxygen double bond can form the conjugated structure with sp2-bonding surface carbon on MWCNTs and partially compensate the sp2 hybridized structure of their surface carbon, surface modification only with oxygenated groups for MWCNTs has a small influence of electronic structure state of surface carbon and show no obvious shift of Raman bands and similar high reduction temperature of MWCNTs except Raman intensity ratio and reductive peak area of MWCNTs. The catalytic dehydrogenation performance of these MWCNTs with surface modification is not determined by itself reactivity of surface carbon but the type of functional groups on surface carbon and the hydroxylation of MWCNTs, especially MWCNTs with artificial defects, are used to produce efficient active sites for dehydrogenation reaction to enhance their catalytic activities. Surface modification of CeO2 nanoparticles for MWCNTs can change characteristic Raman band and reduction capability of MWCNTs and CeO2 due to the presence of strong interaction and charge transfer between MWCNTs and CeO2. Simultaneously, π-electron deficient inner surface of MWCNTs can strongly interact with CeO2 to promote the further activation of CeO2. Therefore, CeO2-MWCNTs composites show the increased catalytic activities due to surface modification with CeO2 nanoparticles. Noticeably, CeO2 nanoparticles decorated on inner surface of MWCNT channels show higher catalytic efficiency than that on their outer surface.
Inhibitory Effect of Zn2+ on the Chain-Initiation Process of Cumene Oxidation

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have excellent catalytic activity in liquid phase reaction, especially in aerobic oxidation of cumene. In previous work, the conversion of cumene was 41.8% and the selectivity of cumene hydroperoxide was 71.5%, which was catalyzed by CNTs. But a small amount of impurity Zn2+ totally blocked up the aerobic oxidation of cumene that catalyzed by CNTs, which is an unexpected discovery. By analyzing the catalytic mechanism of CNTs, the inhibition effect of Zn2+ is locked on the abstraction of H atom from cumene. The inhibition of Zn2+ is confirmed in two effects by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Firstly, due to the strongly coordination of active oxygen species (ROS) by Zn2+, the energy barrier of initial reaction increases to 1.90 eV, which is nearly 4 times higher than that of the only ROS promoted-process. Secondly, the interaction of Zn2+ and RO· or ROO· to inhibits the chain propagation reaction of free radicals. This work precisely demonstrates that the inhibition effect of Zn2+ on initial reaction of cumene. The most significant thing is that the effect of metallic heteroatoms is not negligible in organic oxidation reaction.
Catalytic Oxidation Of Chlorobenzene Over V2o5/Tio2-Cnts Nano Composites

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of Chlorobenzene (CBz) was studied over V2O5/TiO2-CNTs nanocomposites prepared by sol-gel method. Physical and chemical properties were characterized by BET, XRD and XPS. The catalytic activity for CBz oxidation was improved with the addition of CNTs and the destruction efficiency of 94% could be obtained with the catalyst supported by CNTs which has tube diameter 20-30nm and -COOH group. The high catalytic performance could be attributed to the adsorption property of CNTs and the improvement of the catalysts.

Abstract:The metal oxides CuMnCe and CeY washcoats on cordierite were prepared using an impregnation method, and then used as support for the active Pt component to prepare the Pt/CuMnCe and Pt/CeY monolithic catalysts for the deep oxidation of VOCs. In comparison with the Pt/CeY, CuMnCe, and CeY monolithic catalysts, the Pt/CuMnCe monolithic catalyst shows an excellent performance for toluene, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane oxidation and the T90% is low to 216, 200 and 260 degrees C, respectively. The active components Pt/PtO and CuMnCe result in a better synergetic interaction, which promote the catalyst reducibility, increase the oxygen mobility, and enhance the adsorption and activation of organic molecules. Deactivation Mechanism of CeO2-Based Mixed Oxide Catalysts Supported on SiO2

Abstract:Here we reported the effect of the Cu-Mn-Ce-SiO2 (CMC-SiO2) interaction on the physical and chemical aspects of the catalytic combustion of toluene by adjusting the loading amount of the CMC mixed oxide on SiO2.Notably,the CMC/KIT-6 catalyst with low CMC loading performed poorly with an obvious deactivation,owing to the inhibition of the metal oxides active sites,while the activity recovered after washing away some SiO2.The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR),N2 adsorption,and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM).Although there is no change in crystal structure after loading on SiO2,active oxygen species immigrate from lattice to surface for SiO2 surface rich in hydroxyl groups and having high dispersion of CMC,leading to deactivation of the CMC catalyst.However,it is worth mentioning that the lattice oxygen played a key role in catalytic combustion.The activity of the CMC catalyst recovered when the quantity of lattice oxygen increased upon removing surface-OH groups by calcination or removing some SiO2 by alkali washing.

Abstract:CeO2, Ce2oZr1 and Ce10Zr1 mixed oxides with uniform nanocubic morphology and varied amounts of surface oxygen vacancies were synthesized to study the influence of surface oxygen vacancies on soot catalytic oxidation in a low concentration of gaseous O-2. It is presented that excessive surface oxygen vacancies may lead to low soot oxidation activity and catalyst deactivation during the reaction. H-2-TPR results indicate that the doping of Zr does not decrease the amount of surface redox sites. Instead, it induces the formation of surface capping oxygen (O2-) rather than the highly active O-x(-) species, which hereby affects the catalyst behavior significantly. These point out that a ceria-based catalyst should not contain too many surface oxygen vacancies when designing for the application in gasoline particulate filters. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Following our previous work on the synergy between graphene and catalyst particle [1], we discuss how carbon nanotubes (CNTs) affect the catalytic reactivity of CuO during advanced oxidation processes using density functional theory calculations. CNTs act as electron donor and regulate the electronic structure of CuO during each reaction step because the 2p orbitals of the C atoms hybridise with the 4d orbitals of the Cu atoms rather than the 2p orbitals of the O atoms. An electric field guides charge transfer through the interface between the CNTs and CuO, which modifies the electronic state of CuO/CNTs for catalytic reactions.

Abstract:M–N–C materials as catalysts are widely used in hydrocarbon oxidation, the intrinsic role of which has not been well illustrated. In this study, M–N–C (M = Fe, Co, Cu, Zn) as model catalysts for cumene oxidation through theoretical calculations and experiment validation are studied. The changes of Gibbs free energy (ΔG) for the elementary steps demonstrate that the activation of cumene/O2 molecules and the decomposition of cumene hydroperoxide (CHP) play a significant role in cumene oxidation. The interactions between M–N–C and cumene, O2, and CHP are fully investigated. There are strong interactions between FeNC/CoNC and O2, cumene, and CHP, in which the activation of cumene and O2 and the decomposition of CHP occurred more easily, thereby promoting the catalytic activity. Although the adsorption energy over CuNC (ΔE CuNC) for cumene is comparable to ΔE CoNC, the O2 molecule is physically adsorbed on CuNC, which leads to a lower activity than those of FeNC and CoNC. Metal tetraphenyl-porphyrins (MTPPs) with the corresponding structure of M–N–C as the catalysts are used to catalyze the oxidation of cumene. A volcanic curve correlation between the average adsorption energy (ΔE av.) and the conversion rate of cumene catalyzed by MTPPs is observed. The kinetic experiments confirmed that CoTPP displays the best catalytic activity, due to the high k 80 and low activation energy for the crucial steps of cumene oxidation, which is consistent with the theoretical results.

Abstract:The influence of the surface chemical properties of the carbon support on the Pd dispersion, activity and stability of Pd(OH)2/C catalyst for the hydrogenolytic debenzylation of tetraacetyldibenzylhexaazaisowurtzitane (TADB) was studied in detail. The flowerlike nanosheet carbon material (NSC) was chosen as the pristine support, meanwhile chemical oxidation with nitric acid and physical calcination at 600 °C treatments were used to modify its surface properties, which were denoted as NSCox-2 (treated with 20 wt% HNO3) and NSC-600, respectively. The three carbon supports and the corresponding catalysts of Pd/NSC, Pd/NSC-600, and Pd/NSCox-2 were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen sorption isotherm measurement (BET), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS), temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), thermogravimetric analysis (TG), and element analysis. The debenzylation activities of Pd/NSC, Pd/NSC-600, and Pd/NSCox-2, as well as the three catalysts after pre-reduction treatment were also evaluated. It was found that the activity and stability of the Pd(OH)2/C catalysts in the debenzylation reaction highly depended on the content of surface oxygen-containing groups of the carbon support.

Abstract:It has been widely documented that the oxygen-containing functionalities, especially carboxyl groups, on carbon surfaces play crucial roles in the catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) reactions. Herein, the CWAO of phenol with molecular O2 as terminal oxidant using cylindrical and herringbone carbon nanotubes (CNTs) underwent different treatments as catalysts were conducted in batch mode. It was uncovered that the catalytic function of carboxyl groups strongly depended on the structure of CNTs. Parallel CNTs (p-CNTs) with cylindrical graphitic walls displayed the highest catalytic activity after nitric acid oxidation, due to the carboxylated carbon debris (CDs) coating on surfaces. For herringbone CNTs (h-CNTs), carboxyl groups are mostly linked to its sidewalls, where abundant edge carbons were exposed, providing an enhanced CWAO activity. The positively synergistic effect of carboxyl groups and adjacent edge carbons was responsible for the activation of O2, leading to the improved CWAO activity. This study provides a new insight into the structural effect of carbon materials on the CWAO of phenol.

Abstract:Nanocarbon-catalyzed advanced oxidation processes for wastewater remediation are green and state-of-the-art methods, nevertheless, the origins of carbocatalysis remain unresolved. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are employed as typical metal-free catalysts for catalytic peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and phenol oxidation. The surface chemistry and electronic properties of CNTs are deliberately tailored by liquid acid oxidation and subsequent thermal treatment. It is unveiled that the electron-rich carbon surface and carbonyl groups can affect organic adsorption capacity of the carbocatalysts and modulate persulfate activation in different catalytic manners. Furthermore, the relationship between the surface chemistry (oxygen functionality and electron density) and carbocatalysis is established, which is decisive to regulate the radical/nonradical pathways in the catalytic oxidation for water purification. This study provides new insights to carbon-catalyzed persulfate activation with manipulated reaction pathways and redox potentials.
Oxygen Vacancy-Governed Opposite Catalytic Performance for C3H6 and C3H8 Combustion: The Effect of the Pt Electronic Structure and Chemisorbed Oxygen Species

Abstract:Revealing the role of engineered surface oxygen vacancies in the catalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of importance for the development of highly efficient catalysts. However, because of various structures of VOC molecules, the role of surface oxygen vacancies in different catalytic reactions remains ambiguous. Herein, a defective Pt/TiO2-x catalyst is proposed to uncover the different catalytic mechanisms of C3H6 and C3H8 combustion via experiments and theoretical calculations. The electron transfer, originated from the oxygen vacancy, facilitates the formation of reduced Pt0 species and simultaneously interfacial chemisorbed O2, thus promoting the C3H6 combustion via efficient C═C cleavage. The reduced Pt nanoparticles facilitate the robust chemisorption of bridging dimer O22- (Pt-O-O-Ti) species. This chemisorbed oxygen inhibits the C3H8 combustion by depressing C3H8 adsorption. This work offers insights for the rational design of highly efficient catalysts for activating the C═C bond in alkene or C-H bond in alkane.
Trace amounts of Cu(OAc)2 boost the efficiency of cumene oxidation catalyzed by carbon nanotubes washed with HCl

Abstract:The oxidation of hydrocarbons to high value-added intermediates is significant in industrial manufacture. It is of great significance to develop low-cost, high-activity catalytic systems. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used as catalysts and cumene was used as a substrate to be oxidized into high value-added peroxides, alcohols, and ketones. By adding trace amounts of Cu(OAc)(2) (1 ppm of CNTs), the conversion of cumene greatly increased to 54.2% from 38.5%, and the selectivity of alcohol increased from 25.1% to 44.7%, indicating that the trace amounts of Cu(OAc)(2) could significantly modulate the reactivity and product selectivity. The mechanism study has shown that this promoting effect results from the presence of chlorine adsorbed on the carbon surface caused by HCl washing. This adsorbed chlorine is extremely unstable during the reaction and interacts with Cu(OAc)(2) to form a Cu-Cl component, thus accelerating the decomposition of peroxides and promoting the activity of the reaction. This study demonstrates that the pretreatment of carbon materials might significantly impact their catalytic performance.
Can Subsurface Oxygen Species in Oxides Participate in Catalytic Reactions? An 17O Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study

Abstract:The impacts of subsurface species of catalysts on reaction processes are still under debate, largely due to a lack of characterization methods for distinguishing these species from the surface species and the bulk. By using 17O solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, which can distinguish subsurface oxygen ions in CeO2 (111) nanorods, we explore the effects of subsurface species of oxides in CO oxidation reactions. The intensities of the 17O NMR signals due to surface and subsurface oxygen ions decrease after the introduction of CO into CeO2 nanorods, with a more significant decrease observed for the latter, confirming the participation of subsurface oxygen species. Density functional theory calculations show that the reaction involves subsurface oxygen ions filling the surface oxygen vacancies created by the direct contact of surface oxygen with CO. This new approach can be extended to the study of the role of oxygen species in other catalytic reactions.
