Abstract:Nanobeam cavities based on hetero optomechanical crystals are proposed. With optical and mechanical modes separately confined by two types of periodic structures, the mechanical frequency is designed as high as 5.88 GHz. Due to the optical field and the strain field concentrated in the optomechanical cavity and resembling each other with an enhanced overlap, a high optomechanical coupling rate of 1.31 MHz is predicted.

Abstract:An optomechanical crystal nanobeam cavity, only by increasing the radius of air holes in the defect region, is proposed and optimized for a high optomechanical coupling rate. In our proposed cavity, the photonic and phononic defect modes are simultaneously confined by each corresponding bandgap, and the overlap of the optical and mechanical modes can be improved simply by adjusting the radius of the air holes. Accordingly, an optomechanical coupling rate (g) as high as 1.16 MHz is obtained, which is the highest coupling rate among the reported optomechanical crystal cavities. What's more, the proposed cavity also exhibits a high mechanical frequency of 4.01 GHz and a small effective mass of 85 fg for the fundamental mechanical mode.

Abstract:Optomechanical crystals are combinations of photonic and phononic crystals, which simultaneously control optical and acoustic waves with nanoscale periodic structure and form optomechanical systems with high mechanical frequency and lager photon-phonon interaction. We proposed a nanobeam cavity based on hetero optomechanical crystal with two types of periodic structures, where the optical and mechanical modes separately confined by two periodic structures. A mechanical frequency as high as 5.66 GHz was achieved while the working wavelength of the optical cavity was maintained at 1.55 μm. Besides, due to the flexibility introduced by the hetero structure, the optical field and the strain field were designed to be concentrated inside the optomechanical cavities and resemble each other with an enhanced overlap. As a result, the optomechanical coupling rate, which represents the interaction strength between photon and phonon, was as high as 1.31 MHz. Also we proposed and optimized an optomechanical crystal nanobeam cavity, only by increasing the radius of air holes in the defect region, for small effective mass. A very small effective mass of 85 fg was estimated. By far, the on-chip cavity optomechanical systems has to be with the help of tapered fibers or one-sided waveguide with circulator to couple the light into or out. Here we demonstrated larger center-hole nanobeam structures with on-chip transmission waveguide coupling. The mechanical frequency was measured up to 4.47 GHz, with a high mechanical Q-factor of 1.4 × 103 in ambient environment. The corresponding optomechanical coupling rate and the effective mass were estimated to be 836 kHz and 136 fg, respectively. With transmission waveguide coupled structure and small footprint of only 3.4 μm2, this simple cavity can be directly used as functional components and integrated with other on-chip devices in future practical applications.

Abstract:Tunable coupled mechanical resonators with nonequilibrium dynamic phenomena have attracted considerable attention in quantum simulations, quantum computations, and non-Hermitian systems. In this study, we propose tunable mechanical-mode coupling based on nanobeam-double optomechanical cavities. The excited optical mode interacts with both symmetric and antisymmetric mechanical supermodes and mediates coupling at a frequency of approximately 4.96 GHz. The mechanical-mode coupling is tuned through both optical spring and gain effects, and the reduced coupled frequency difference in non-Hermitian parameter space is observed. These results benefit research on the microscopic mechanical parity–time symmetry for topology and on-chip high-sensitivity sensors.

Abstract:Optomechanical crystals have attracted great attention recently for their ability to realize strong photon-phonon interaction in cavity optomechanical systems. By far, the operation of cavity optomechanical systems with high mechanical frequency has to employ tapered fibres or one-sided waveguides with circulators to couple the light into and out of the cavities, which hinders their on-chip applications. Here, we demonstrate larger-centre-hole nanobeam structures with on-chip transmission-coupling waveguide. The measured mechanical frequency is up to 4.47 GHz, with a high mechanical Q-factor of 1.4 × 103 in the ambient environment. The corresponding optomechanical coupling rate is calculated and measured to be 836 kHz and 1.2 MHz, respectively, while the effective mass is estimated to be 136 fg. With the transmission waveguide coupled structure and a small footprint of 3.4 μm2, this simple cavity can be directly used as functional components or integrated with other on-chip devices in future practical applications.

Abstract:The coupling of mechanical oscillators with light has seen a recent surge of interest, as recent reviews report.[1, 2] This coupling is enhanced when confining light in an optical cavity where the mechanical oscillator is integrated as back- mirror or movable wall. At the nano-scale, the optomechanical coupling increases further thanks to a smaller optomechanical interaction volume and reduced mass of the mechanical oscillator. In view of realizing such cavity nano- optomechanics experiments, a scheme was proposed where a sub-wavelength sized nanomechanical oscillator is coupled to a high finesse optical microcavity.[3] Here we present such an experiment involving a single nanomechanical rod precisely positioned into the confined mode of a miniature Fabry-Pérot cavity.[4] We describe the employed stabilized cavity set-up and related finesse measurements. We proceed characterizing the nanorod vibration properties using ultrasonic piezo-actuation methods. Using the optical cavity as a transducer of nanomechanical motion, we monitor optically the piezo-driven nanorod vibration. On top of extending cavity quantum electrodynamics concepts to nanomechanical systems, cavity nano-optomechanics should advance into precision displacement measurements near the standard quantum limit [5], investigation of mechanical systems in their quantum regime, non-linear dynamics [6] and sensing applications.

Abstract:We report enhanced optomechanical coupling by embedding a nano-mechanical beam resonator within an optical race-track resonator. Precise control of the mechanical resonator is achieved by clamping the beam between two low-loss photonic crystal waveguide couplers. The low insertion loss and the rigid mechanical support provided by the couplers yield both high mechanical and optical Q-factors for improved signal quality.

Abstract:Compared to probe-tuned optomechanical cavity systems, coupled cavity systems have the merit of having much stronger optomechanical interactions. However, to date, the torsional optomechanical effects of coupled cavities have rarely been investigated. In this Letter, we report a torsional optical spring effect in coupled nanobeam photonic crystal cavities. One of the cavities is suspended by a multi-degree-of-freedom spring mechanism that supports torsional vibration modes. The cavities' light field acts in reverse on the selected torsional mode, thus generating a torsional optical spring effect. The experimental results show that the third-order torsional mode of the spring mechanism is optically stiffened and a maximum frequency increase of 77.1 Hz is obtained. The device provides a novel configuration for the optomechanical design of a new degree of freedom (torsional motion) and the coupled cavities are favorable for strong optomechanical interactions in the torsional direction.

Abstract:We present the design of an optomechanical crystal nanobeam cavity that combines finite-element simulation with numerical optimization, and considers the optomechanical coupling arising from both moving dielectric boundaries and the photo-elastic effect. Applying this methodology results in a nanobeam with an experimentally realized intrinsic optical Q-factor of 1.2x10^6, a mechanical frequency of 5.1GHz, a mechanical Q-factor of 6.8x10^5 (at T=10K), and a zero-point-motion optomechanical coupling rate of g=1.1MHz.

Abstract:We propose a realistic system with separated optical and mechanical degrees of freedom, in which a high-mechanical-quality silicon nitride membrane is placed upon a high-optical-quality whispering gallery microcavity. The strongly enhanced linear optomechanical coupling, together with simultaneously low optical and mechanical losses in the present system, results in a remarkable single-photon cooperativity exceeding 300. This unprecedented cooperativity in the optomechanical system enables optical nonlinearity at low light intensities and holds great potential in generating, storing, and implementing quantum states. Moreover, the device gives rise to significantly stronger quadratic optomechanical coupling than achieved to date, which is desirable for measuring phonon shot noise with a high signal-to-noise ratio.

Abstract:Optomechanical crystal is a combination of both photonic and phononic crystal. It simultaneously confines light and mechanical motion and results in strong photon-phonon interaction, which provides a new approach to deplete phonons and realize on-chip quantum ground state. It is promising for both fundamental science and technological applications, such as mesoscopic quantum mechanics, sensing, transducing, and so on. Here high optomechanical coupling rate and efficiency are crucial, which dependents on the optical-mechanical mode-overlap and the mechanical frequency (phonon frequency), respectively. However, in the conventional optomechanical-crystal based on the same periodical structure, it is very difficult to obtain large optical-mechanical mode-overlap and high phonon frequency simultaneously. We proposed and demonstrated nanobeam cavities based on hetero optomechanical crystals with two types of periodic structure. The optical and mechanical modes can be separately confined by two types of periodic structures. Due to the design flexibility in the hetero structure, the optical field and the strain field can be designed to be concentrated inside the optomechanical cavities and resemble each other with an enhanced overlap, as well as high phonon frequency. A high optomechanical coupling rate of 1.3 MHz and a high phonon frequency of 5.9 GHz are predicted theoretically. The proposed cavities are fabricated as cantilevers on silicon-on-insulator chips. The measurement results indicate that a mechanical frequency as high as 5.66 GHz is obtained in ambient environment, which is the highest frequency demonstrated in one-dimensional optomechanical crystal structure.
An Improved Surface-Plasmonic Nanobeam Cavity for Higher Q and Smaller V

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-Q hybrid surface-plasmon-polariton-photonic crystal (SP3C) nanobeam cavity. The proposed cavities are analyzed numerically using the three-dimensional finite difference time domain (3D-FDTD) method. The results show that a Q-factor of 2076 and a modal volume V of 0.16(λ/2n)3 can be achieved in a 50 nm silica-gap hybrid SP3C nanobeam cavity when it operates at telecommunications wavelengths and at room temperature. V can be further reduced to 0.02(λ/2n)3 when the silica thickness decreases to 10 nm, which leads to a Q/V ratio that is 11 times that of the corresponding plasmonic-photonic nanobeam cavity (without silica). The ultrahigh Q/V ratio originates from the low-loss nature and deep sub-wavelength confinement of the hybrid plasmonic waveguide, as well as the mode gap effect used to reduce the radiation loss. The proposed structure is fully compatible with semiconductor fabrication techniques and could lead to a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Brownian motion of nano‐objects is a source of dissipation and dephasing for many processes, particularly the ones related to the interaction between light and matter. However, motional degrees of freedom can also be exploited to control the interaction with the nanoworld. Here, an optimized platform is presented to control optomechanical interaction in the GHz frequency range with high efficiency. In optomechanics, the interaction between light and matter is enhanced by engineering cavities where the electromagnetic field and the mechanical displacement are confined simultaneously within the same volume. This leads to a wide range of interesting phenomena, such as optomechanically induced transparency and the cooling of macroscopic objects to their lowest possible motion state. In this manuscript, the focus is on designed optomechanical cavities exploiting heterostructures in air‐slot photonic‐crystal waveguides, incorporating different hole shapes and dimensions to engineer and control their optomechanical properties. The aim is to maximize the optical quality factor of the optical cavity, while ensuring optical mode volumes below the diffraction limit. These optimized optical modes interact with in‐plane motional degrees of freedom of the structures achieving high optomechanical coupling rates, thus opening up the possibility of mechanical amplification, nonlinear dynamics and chaos through the optomechanical back‐action.

Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in silicon-on-insulator platform. Results show that repeatable devices achieve similar high loaded quality factors (>10(4)) and large optical energy ratio in low refractive region. The unload Q-factors of the fabricated cavities are estimated to exceed 10(5). With side-coupled configuration, high transmission of through port is achieved with typical insertion loss less than 0.5 dB. Wavelength shifts of the measured resonances with respect to the designed values are observed and well explained by considering the fluctuation of etching depth. The demonstrated side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities may find their applications in ultracompact integrated photonics, especially for on-chip photonic sensor, notch filter, or optical switch.

Abstract:Multimode optomechanics exhibiting several intriguing phenomena, such as coherent wavelength conversion, optomechanical synchronization, and mechanical entanglements, has garnered considerable research interest for realizing a new generation of information processing devices and exploring macroscopic quantum effect. In this study, we proposed and designed a hetero-optomechanical crystal (OMC) zipper cavity comprising double OMC nanobeams as a versatile platform for multimode optomechanics. Herein, the heterostructure and breathing modes with high mechanical frequency ensured the operation of the zipper cavity at the deep-sideband-resolved regime and the mechanical coherence. Consequently, the mechanical breathing mode at 5.741 GHz and optical odd mode with an intrinsic optical Q factor of 3.93 × 105 were experimentally demonstrated with an optomechanical coupling rate g0 = 0.73 MHz between them, which is comparable to state-of-the-art properties of the reported OMC. In addition, the hetero-zipper cavity structure exhibited adequate degrees of freedom for designing multiple mechanical and optical modes. Thus, the proposed cavity will provide a playground for studying multimode optomechanics in both the classical and quantum regimes.

Abstract:A scheme for the generation of steady-state entanglement between optical and mechanical cavity modes in an optomechanical crystal nanobeam is proposed. Based on finite element simulation and the quantum Langevin equation, we explore the evolution of entanglement with optomechanical properties in various device configurations, and demonstrate the ability of optimal entanglement generation in both blue and red detuned optical pumps. The intrinsic relationship between optomechanical cooperativity and entanglement is further clarified for depicting a clear physical picture of optomechanical interaction. Our work expands the understanding of macroscopic quantum mechanics and is an important step for developing novel quantum optomechanical devices.
