Abstract:BACKGROUND: In syntheses of biodegradable and bioresorbable polymers, efficient metal-free catalysts are very desirable as the resulting products may be more biocompatible. As an attempt to find new metal-free catalysts, 1,3-dialkylimidazolium salts, the most commonly used ionic liquids or organic melt salts, were used as single-component catalysts in the melt polycondensation Of L-lactic acid for the first time. The resulting poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) was characterized using gel permeation chromatography, C-13 NMR, DSC and polarimetry.RESULTS: It has been found that less bulky substituents on the imidazolium ring are conducive to catalytic activity. PLLA with molar mass of about 20 000 g mol(-1) was synthesized at high yield (over 70%) in the presence of various 1,3-dialkylimidazolium salts. The product exhibits satisfactory color (white to slightly yellow), optical purity (89-95%) and crystallinity (40-55%). A possible catalytic mechanism is proposed.CONCLUSION: As compared with the well-known binary catalyst system SnCl2 center dot 2H(2)O/toluene sulfonic acid, the catalysts used in this investigation are better in terms of increasing PLLA yield and preventing discoloration and comparable in terms of racemization. Abstract:Ionic liquids, with their unique properties, including low volatility, high polarity, good thermal stability over a wide temperature range and selective dissolving capacity by a proper choice of cations or anions, have attracted increasing interest in the organic transformations as reactioin medium as well as catalyst (ligand). Compared with traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids have great advantages in obtaining products with high isolated yields and good to excellent selectivities, accelerationg reaction rate in some cases, ease of work-up, as well as recycling use with or without catalysts after simply recoveration. The paper reviews the advanced progress in the application of ionic liquids as reaction medium as well as catalysts to organic synthesis, mainly including coupling reaction, Michael addition, Baylis-Hillman reaction, Diels-Alder reaction, Aldol reaction, Knoevenagel condensation, cyclorization reaction, alkylation and acylation, oxidation and reduction etc.

Abstract:Polylactic acid is one of the most promising biodegradable polymers, lactide is the intermediate for the preparation of polylactic acid from lactic acid ,the conversion of lactideis low and hamper the extensive application of PLA. In this paper, the present study for lactide synthesis from lactic acid has been reviewed for the past two decades, including the main methods of the synthesis of lactide from lactic acid, process and factors to influence the yield of lactide. Based on these, several methods of improving the yield of lactide have been brought forward.

Abstract:Lactide,the important intermediate for synthesis of poly lactic acid,was prepared from D,L-lactic acid with ionic liquid as catalyst.High purity lactide was obtained by recrystallization,and identified with melting point measurement and infrared ray spectroscopy.The influence factors,such as the type and dosage of ionic liquid on the yield of lactide were discussed in the preparation of lactide.The results showed that ionic liquid as catalyst was feasible and could lower the viscosity of the reaction system for preparation of lactide under mild reaction conditions,and the optimum conditions for using [NH(C2H5)3][HSO4] catalyst were that the dosage of catalyst was 5%(mass),oligomerization and depolymerization temperature were in the range of 110—140℃ and 190—250℃ respectively.

Abstract:Attention! This study finds ZnO‐creatinine hybrid catalyst is used to effectively catalyze lactide synthesis with high yield and low racemization. Lactide is the crucial intermediate for polylactic acid (PLA) synthesis via ring‐open polymerization, but it suffers low yield and low purity induced by racemization reaction. In this work, we have developed a zinc oxide‐creatinine (ZnO‐CR) hybrid catalyst, which offers high yield (the distilled lactide yield and pure l‐lactide yield are 95.73% and 61.64%) and high purity (81.53%) for green l‐lactide synthesis at the cyclization temperature of 240°C. Furthermore, NMR and HPLC results show that CR addition significantly restrains the racemization by reducing α‐proton abstraction, where guanidine derived from the CR plays a main catalytic role to provide a tight association with the carbonyl oxygen in the carboxyl of LnA oligomers. Therefore, carbonyl‐carbon with the enhanced electrophilicity is easier being attacked by a hydroxyl terminal of LnA oligomers, leading to high yield and high purity for lactide synthesis.

Abstract:Enantiomerically pure lactides of L-lactide (LLA) and D-lactide (DLA) were synthesized with high yield (68.5-69.5%) via depolymerization of oligo-poly-L-lactic acid (O-PLLA) and oligo-poly-D-lactic acid (O-PDLA) catalyzed by biogenic creatinine (CR). The structures of synthesized LLA and DLA were characterized with XRD analysis of the prepared single crystals. Gas chromatograph (with a chiral stationary phase capillary column) analysis demonstrated that the synthesized LLA and DLA possessed enantiomeric excess of 100%. The catalytic efficiency of the catalyst creatinine reached to a high level as observed by the turnover frequency in the range of 338.0-347.7 h(-1). The residues of the depolymerization were utilized for resynthesizing of the enantiomerically pure lactides for 3 circles without the decrease in the yields of enantiomerically pure LLA/DLA. The catalyst we used in this research was biogenic and the process for lactide synthesis featured a closed-cycle without any waste release. A possible mechanism of CR-catalyzed LLA/DLA synthesis was proposed and discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The novel efficient procedure has been developed for the oxathioacetalization of carbonyl compounds and 2-mercaptoethanol at room temperature under solvent-free condition. The results showed that the novel multi-SO 3 H functionalized ionic liquid was very efficient for the reactions with the good to excellent yields in short time. Operational simplicity, without need of any solvent, room temperature, low cost of the catalyst used, high yields, applicability to large-scale reactions, reusability and chemoselectivity are the key features of this methodology.

Abstract:D,L-lactide is an indispensable material for peparaing poly-D,L-lactide.In this paper,with D,L-lactic acid as raw material and ZnO-Sn(Oct)2 as catalyst,the lactide was synthesized by the oligomerization and depolymerization under high vacuum.Effects of the ways of adding the two catalysts on yield of lactide were discussed.The results show that the yield of lactide is beyond 90% with adding ZnO(ω=1%) and Sn(Oct)2(2 mL) at the same time after dehydration.

Abstract:As an indispensable material to synthesize poly(lactide),the technology of preparing lactide affects the quality and price of PLA.The reactive time and reactive temperature are two important parameters for yield of lactide.In this article,the reactive time for synthesizing lactide was discussed with D,L-Lactic acid as raw material and ZnO as the catalyst,a kind of optimum technique was as follows:the de-water remains 1h,which the temperature is 75 ℃~80 ℃,the pressure is(-0.095) MPa.Then ZnO is catalyst,which dosage is 1%,dehydration remains 5 h under 120 ℃~125 ℃.Finally lactide was synthesized by depolymerization of oligomers under 170 ℃~225 ℃ and higher vacuum(-0.1) MPa,and yield of lactide is beyond 75%.

Abstract:The feasibility of synthesizing star-shaped poly(lactic acid) by solution polymerization,with stannous octoate as catalyst and multi-hydroxy/carboxy compounds as initiator,was investigated.(Products) were characterized with ()~1H-NMR and DSC analysis.Results showed that star-shaped poly(lactic acid) could be synthesized successfully by solution polymerization.Compared to that by ring opening polymerization of lactide,the controllability of structure and molecular weight in solution polymerization was less effective.An amount of linear poly(lactic acid) were existent due to the steric hindrance of star-shaped initiatiors.

Abstract:Lactide is an important monomer in the industrial production of PLA, which is one of the materials with the greatest potential for replacing petroleum-based polymers. In view of the low yields of lactide when synthesized by metal catalysts, as well as the low purity and racemization seen in recently reported catalytic systems, we have developed a new catalytic method-a complex system of Zn(La)(2) and NaHCO3 that offers both high yield and high purity. The yield of lactide reached above 95.63% with a purity up to 97.86% in only 3.25 h. Furthermore, the effects of the catalyst loading and the addition time of the catalyst were studied to optimize the yield of lactide and deduce a reasonable reaction mechanism in conjunction with NMR analysis. The reaction of NaHCO3 and the oligomer is thought to generate carboxylate anions, which would dramatically inhibit further polymerization. Thus, the bond between ester oxygen and methyne carbon was broken due to the attack of the carboxylate anion on the asymmetrical carbon atom, and the ester bond was broken due to the attack of the hydroxyl group on the carbonyl carbon, which results in the decrease of the molecular weight of the residual oligomers. As a result, the rate of lactide production increased rapidly as the molecular weight of the polymer decreased.

Abstract:Poly(D,L-lactide)(PDLLA) was synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of D,L-lactide.The effects of the synthesis conditions such as monomer(lactide) purity,catalyst(stannous octoate) concentration,vacuum level,reaction time and temperature,were discussed.The PDLLA with a viscosity average molecular weight(M_η) beyond 20×10~4 was obtained under the optimum synthesis conditions of the lactide after being recrystallized 4 times as the monomer,the vacuum level of 0.098 MPa,reaction temperature of 150-160 ℃,reaction time of 6-8 h,and using 0.1%-0.18% stannous octoate as catalyst.The structure of polymer was characterized by FTIR and ~1H-NMR.

Abstract:L-lactide was prepared from L-lactic acid using the stannous octoate as the catalyst. The effects of temperature and pressure on preparation of lactide were discussed in this paper. The high purity lactide can be obtained by washing with water and recrystallizing. The yield of the lactide reaches 40. 6%. The results of polarimeter, IR, chromatogram and mass spectrum show that the prepared L-lactide is pure.

Abstract:Poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) is a bio-based biodegradable polymer with minimal immunogenicity, non-toxicity and excellent mechanical properties and has widely used in medical, pharmaceutical, food packaging and other fields. However, linear PLLA has the characteristics of high melting point, strong crystallinity, weak flowability and poor thermal stability, which cannot meet the requirements of various industrial processes and novel pharmaceutical formulations. With its low viscosity, controlled degradation cycle, and excellent melt flowability, star-shaped PLLA can be used in the fields of biocomposites, biomedical devices, drug delivery, and intelligent packaging. Presently, metal catalysts and organic solvents are frequently used in PLLA synthesis industries, and both residues continue to pose a safety risks. In existing studies, the performance of bioenzymes as optimal green catalysts in organic solvents is not satisfactory, and they are predominantly used to synthesise oligomers with low yields and lengthy reaction times. In this study, a four-armed star-shaped poly (L-lactic acid) (4s-PLLA) with a porous structure favourable for drug loading was synthesised using supercritical carbon dioxide (Sc-CO 2 ) as a solvent, lipase as a catalyst, and erythritol as a nucleus. Using Sc-CO 2 as a solvent the reaction activity and stability of the enzyme were increased so that the reaction yield could reach 83% and the reaction time was only 24 h, which provided a possibility for the practical application of the enzymes catalyze green process. Both the random copolymerization product four-armed star-shaped poly(L-lactic-glycolic acid) (4s-PLGA) and the block copolymerization product four-armed star-shaped poly (L-lactic-glycolic acid) (4s-PLLA-PGA) were subsequently synthesized by copolymerization modification, and their porous structures retained and hydrophilicity were enhanced. The response surface analyses were performed about the reaction time, reaction temperature and yield of synthetic reactions by using Design-Expert 12 software and the prediction equations were generated.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA), as a biodegradable and renewable polymer, has been widely used in biomedical and commercial applications. The energy-efficient synthesis of lactide from lactic acid (La) via a one-step route is highly desired for megaton-scale PLA production. In this work, stereo-pure L-lactide was synthesized with high yield (88.2-95.8%) via a one-step route catalyzed by Sn-beta zeolites. Sn-O-Si bonds on tin-silica catalysts are indeed important for a high L-Iactide yield. The Sn4+ ions with four isolated coordinates in tetrahedral configuration of Sn-beta zeolites are more active for L-lactide synthesis than those with hexacoordinated polymeric Sn-O-Sn-type species. L-La was first converted into a lactic acid dimer (L(2)a) and then formed L-lactide catalyzed by a Sn-beta zeolite, and the average reaction rate in first 20 min (R-20min(av)) increased linearly with increasing Sn content. Importantly, lactic acid trimers (L(3)a) formed during the reaction could also be converted to L-Iactide in the later stage of the reaction, and the diffusion of L(3)a to the active site within the Sn- beta zeolite pore is the rate-limiting step. The lactic acid oligomer (L(n)a, n >= 4) was limited to form lactide with an R-20min(av) of only 0.013 mmol min(-1) g(cat)(-1).
