Abstract:In this communication, we introduce the concept of three dimensional (3D) battery electrodes to enhance the capacity per footprint area for lithium-sulfur battery. In such a battery, 3D electrode of sulfur embedded into porous graphene sponges (S-GS) was directly used as the cathode with large areal mass loading of sulfur (12 mg cm −2 ), approximately 6–12 times larger than that of most reports. The graphene sponges (GS) worked as a framework that can provide high electronic conductive network, abilities to absorb the polysulfides intermediate and meanwhile mechanical support to accommodate the volume changes during charge and discharge. As a result, the S-GS electrode with 80 wt.% sulfur can deliver an extremely high areal specific capacitance of 6.0 mAh cm −2 of the 11 th cycle and maintain 4.2 mAh cm −2 after 300 charge−discharge cycles at a rate of 0.1C, representing an extremely low decay rate (0.08% per cycle after 300 cycles), which could be the highest areal specific capacity with comparable cycle stability among the rechargeable Li/S batteries reported ever.
A facile synthesis of three dimensional graphene sponge composited with sulfur nanoparticles for flexible Li-S cathodes

Abstract:Compared with a two dimensional graphene sheet, a three dimensional (3D) graphene sponge has a continuous conductive structure and numerous pores, which are beneficial for sulfur utilization and anchoring. However, strategies for the construction of 3D graphene sponges composited with sulfur nanoparticles (3DGS) are either energy consuming or involve toxic reagents. Herein, a 3DGS is fabricated via a reduction induced self-assembly method, which is simple but facile and scalable. The structural design of this 3DGS promises fast Li(+) transport, superior electrolyte absorbability and effective electrochemical redox reactions of sulfur. As a result, this 3DGS achieves a stable capacity of 580 mA h g(-1) after 500 cycles at a high rate of 1.5 A g(-1), which corresponds to a low fading rate of 0.043% per cycle. The present study effectively demonstrates that the 3D construction strategy is propitious for obtaining flexible high performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract:We report the use of super-aligned carbon nanotube/graphene (CNT/G) hybrid materials as a 3D conducting framework for sulfur accommodation. The CNT network acts as a skeleton to form a self-sustained cathode that is binder-free, highly conductive, and flexible. Graphene with a 2D sheet structure extends in an additional dimension to provide improved restriction for sulfur/polysulfides. Moreover, the CNT/G hybrid framework enables better dispersion of sulfur and allows each sulfur particle to closely attach to the conductive components, which greatly enhance the electronic conductivity and thereby approach the full potential of the active materials. With an optimized CNT/G ratio in the framework, the S-CNT/G nanocomposite exerts improved mechanical performance and favorable electrochemical characteristics compared to the S-CNT composite. Based on its superior structure, the S-CNT/G nanocomposite achieves a high discharge capacity of 1048 mA h g(-1) at 1 C with a capacity fade as low as 0.041% per cycle over 1000 charge-discharge cycles. Excellent high-rate and long-term cycling performances are also revealed. These results demonstrate the great potential of the S-CNT/G nanocomposite as a flexible and binder-free cathode for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Sulfur is a promising cathode material for lithium–sulfur batteries because of its high theoretical capacity (1,675 mA h g −1 ); however, its low electrical conductivity and the instability of sulfur-based electrodes limit its practical application. Here we report a facile in situ method for preparing three-dimensional porous graphitic carbon composites containing sulfur nanoparticles (3D S@PGC). With this strategy, the sulfur content of the composites can be tuned to a high level (up to 90 wt%). Because of the high sulfur content, the nanoscale distribution of the sulfur particles, and the covalent bonding between the sulfur and the PGC, the developed 3D S@PGC cathodes exhibit excellent performance, with a high sulfur utilization, high specific capacity (1,382, 1,242 and 1,115 mA h g −1 at 0.5, 1 and 2 C, respectively), long cycling life (small capacity decay of 0.039% per cycle over 1,000 cycles at 2 C) and excellent rate capability at a high charge/discharge current.

Abstract:A porous three-dimensional nitrogen-doped graphene (3D-NG) was introduced as an interconnected framework for sulfur in lithium-sulfur batteries. The 3D-NG-sulfur composite (3D-NGS) with a high sulfur content of 87.6 wt% was synthesized via a facile one-pot solution method and sulfur was well dispersed within it. The as-designed 3D-NGS composite exhibits excellent rate capability and cyclability. The discharge specific capacity is 792 mA h g(-1) after 145 cycles at a current density of 600 mA g(-1) and the capacity fading rate is 0.05% per cycle. Even at a high rate of 1500 mA g(-1), the composite still shows a good cycle performance with a capacity of 671 mA h g(-1) after 200 cycles. The outstanding electrochemical performance can be attributed to the flexible porous 3D structure and N-doping in graphene. The flexible 3D-NG can provide a conductive framework for electron transport and alleviate the volume effect during cycling. N-doping can facilitate the penetration of Li ions across the graphene and restrain sulfur due to the strong chemical bonding between S and the nearby N atoms.

Abstract:Improving the sulfur loading, conductivity, and polarity of the sulfur host is the main effective strategy used to solve the inherent problem of lithium-sulfur batteries for solve the inherent problem of lithium-sulfur batteries for practical applications. Herein, a three-dimensional hybrid sulfur host composed of graphitic carbon nitride and functionalized carbon nanotubes is prepared via a self- assembly-assisted method assisted by calcination. The structural analysis results indicate that graphitic carbon nitride sheets are grown in situ on the surfaces of the carbon nanotubes and that the two components are connected by C-N bonds to form a larger pi-conjugated system. This unique structural linkage between the two parts directs electron transfer from the carbon nanotubes to the carbon nitride, resulting in enhanced conductivity of the integrated hybrid composite and processing a sufficient number of nitrogen-containing functional groups. Thus, as a sulfur host, the hybrid composite can efficiently restrain the shuttle effect of intermediate polysulfides because of its high sulfur utilization and strong chemical interaction with polysulfides. As a result, a modified sulfur cathode with a high sulfur content of 80 wt % delivers a high specific capacity of 1351.2 mAh g(-1) at a rate of 0.1 C. Even at a 5 mg cm(-2) sulfur loading, the cathode exhibits an initial capacity of 758.9 mAh g(-1) with a capacity retention of 77.1% after 200 cycles at 1 C.

Abstract:A free-standing nano-sulfur-based carbon nanotube/graphene (S/CNT/G) film with a conductive interlinked three-dimensional (3D) nanoarchitecture is fabricated via a facile solution-based method. This 3D multidimensional carbon–sulfur network combines three different nanoarchitectures, as follows: zero-dimensional sulfur nanoparticles, one-dimensional carbon nanotubes, and two-dimensional graphene. The CNTs with a one-dimensional structure act as a conductive matrix, and graphene with two-dimensional sheets is intercalated into the CNT scaffold to build a 3D structure, extending in an additional dimension to provide improved restriction for sulfur/polysulfides. Zero-dimensional sulfur nanoparticles are anchored uniformly on the interpenetrative 3D carbon framework to form a free-standing cathode. Moreover, this well-designed S/CNT/G film is flexible, highly conductive, binder free and current collector free. When directly used as a flexible cathode electrode, the synthesized S/CNT/G film delivers both excellent long-term cycling and high-rate performances. A high initial capacity of 948 mA h g −1 is obtained, and subsequently, a reversible discharge capacity of 593 mA h g −1 over 200 cycles is achieved at 0.5C. Even at a high rate of 3C, the S/CNT/G film with a 50 wt% sulfur content still exhibits a discharge capacity of 598 mA h g −1 . These results demonstrate the great potential of the S/CNT/G nanocomposite as a flexible and binder-free cathode for high performance Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur batteries can deliver significantly higher specific capacity than standard lithium ion batteries, and represent the next generation of energy storage devices for both electric vehicles and mobile devices. However, the lithium–sulfur technology today is plagued with numerous challenges, including poor sulfur conductivity, large volumetric expansion, severe polysulfide shuttling and low sulfur utilization, which prevent its wide-spread adoption in the energy storage industry. Here we report a freestanding three-dimensional (3D) graphene framework for highly efficient loading of sulfur particles and creating a high capacity sulfur cathode. Using a one-pot synthesis method, we show a mechanically robust graphene–sulfur composite can be prepared with the highest sulfur weight content (90% sulfur) reported to date, and can be directly used as the sulfur cathode without additional binders or conductive additives. The graphene–sulfur composite features a highly interconnected graphene network ensuring excellent conductivity and a 3D porous structure allowing efficient ion transport and accommodating large volume expansion. Additionally, the 3D graphene framework can also function as an effective encapsulation layer to retard the polysulfide shuttling effect, thus enabling a highly robust sulfur cathode. Electrochemical studies show that such composite can deliver a highest capacity of 96 mAh·g–1, a record high number achieved for all sulfur cathodes reported to date when normalized by the total mass of the entire electrode. Our studies demonstrate that the 3D graphene framework represents an attractive scaffold material for a high performance lithium sulfur battery cathode, and could enable exciting opportunities for ultra-high capacity energy storage applications.

Abstract:Recently, various sulfur anchoring materials have been implied to improve the performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery. Herein, we introduced graphene-like g-C3N4 nanosheets (GCN), a sheet-like material with high nitrogen (N) content of 56wt % and high specific surface area of 209.8m2g−1, as a host to anchor lithium polysulfides. The composite with 70.4wt % sulfur loading exhibited an initial reversible capacity of 1250mAhg−1 at 0.05C and a discharge capacity of 578.0mAhg−1 at 0.5C over 750 cycles. The excellent electrochemical performances can be attributed to the abundant N atoms in the GCN, which have the ability to anchor lithium polysulfides. Meanwhile, the high surface area of the GCN prevent sulfur, Li2S2 and Li2S from agglomerating. The result demonstrates that the GCN with abundant N atoms and high specific surface area could improve the electrochemical performance of Li-S battery effectively.

Abstract:The sp(2)-hybridizednanocarbon (e.g., carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and graphene) exhibits extraordinary mechanical strength and electrical conductivity but limited external accessible surface area and a small amount of pores, while nanostructured porous carbon affords a huge surface area and abundant pore structures but very poor electrical conductance. Herein the rational hybridization of the sp(2) nanocarbon and nanostructured porous carbon into hierarchical all-carbon nanoarchitectures is demonstrated, with full inherited advantages of the component materials. The sp(2) graphene/CNT interlinked networks give the composites good electrical conductivity and a robust framework, while the meso-/microporous carbon and the interlamellar compartment between the opposite graphene accommodate sulfur and polysulfides. The strong confinement induced by micro-/mesopores of all-carbon nanoarchitectures renders the transformation of S 8 crystal into amorphous cyclo-S-8 molecular clusters, restraining the shuttle phenomenon for high capacity retention of a lithium-sulfur cell. Therefore, the composite cathode with an ultrahigh specific capacity of 1121 mAh g(-1) at 0.5 C, a favorable high-rate capability of 809 mAh g(-1) at 10 C, a very low capacity decay of 0.12% per cycle, and an impressive cycling stability of 877 mAh g(-1) after 150 cycles at 1 C. As sulfur loading increases from 50 wt% to 77 wt%, high capacities of 970, 914, and 613 mAh g(-1) are still available at current densities of 0.5, 1, and 5 C, respectively. Based on the total mass of packaged devices, gravimetric energy density of GSH@APC-S//Li cell is expected to be 400 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 10 000 W kg(-1), matching the level of engine driven systems.

Abstract:Tailored design/construction of high-quality sulfur/carbon composite cathode is critical for development of advanced lithium-sulfur batteries. We report a powerful strategy for integrated fabrication of sulfur impregnated into three-dimensional (3D) multileveled carbon nanoflake-nanosphere networks (CNNNs) by means of sacrificial ZnO template plus glucose carbonization. The multileveled CNNNs are not only utilized as large-area host/backbone for sulfur forming an integrated S/CNNNs composite electrode, but also serve as multiple carbon blocking barriers (nanoflake infrastructure andnanosphere superstructure) to physically confine polysulfides at the cathode. The designedself-supported S/CNNNs composite cathodes exhibit superior electrochemical performances with high capacities (1395mAhg−1 at 0.1C, and 769mAhg−1 at 5.0C after 200 cycles) and noticeable cycling performance (81.6% retention after 200 cycles). Our results build a new bridge between sulfur and carbon networks with multiple blocking effects for polysulfides, and provide references for construction of other high-performance sulfur cathodes.

Abstract:The rational integration of conductive nanocarbon scaffolds and insulative sulfur is an efficient method to build composite cathodes for high-energy-density lithium–sulfur batteries. The full demonstration of the high-energy-density electrodes is a key issue towards full utilization of sulfur in a lithium–sulfur cell. Herein, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that possess robust mechanical properties, excellent electrical conductivities, and hierarchical porous structures were employed to fabricate carbon/sulfur composite cathode. A family of electrodes with areal sulfur loading densities ranging from 0.32 to 4.77mgcm−2 were fabricated to reveal the relationship between sulfur loading density and their electrochemical behavior. At a low sulfur loading amount of 0.32mgcm−2, a high sulfur utilization of 77% can be achieved for the initial discharge capacity of 1288mAhgS−1, while the specific capacity based on the whole electrode was quite low as 84mAhgC/S+binder+Al−1 at 0.2C. Moderate increase in the areal sulfur loading to 2.02mgcm−2 greatly improved the initial discharge capacity based on the whole electrode (280mAhgC/S+binder+Al−1) without the sacrifice of sulfur utilization. When sulfur loading amount further increased to 3.77mgcm−2, a high initial areal discharge capacity of 3.21mAhcm−2 (864mAhgS−1) was achieved on the composite cathode.

Abstract:One of the critical challenges to develop advanced lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries lies in exploring a high efficient stable sulfur cathode with robust conductive framework and high sulfur loading. Herein, a 3D flexible multifunctional hybrid is rationally constructed consisting of nitrogen-doped carbon foam@CNTs decorated with ultrafine MgO nanoparticles for the use as advanced current collector. The dense carbon nanotubes uniformly wrapped on the carbon foam skeletons enhance the flexibility and build an interconnected conductive network for rapid ionic/electronic transport. In particular, a synergistic action of MgO nanoparticles and in situ N-doping significantly suppresses the shuttling effect via enhanced chemisorption of lithium polysulfides. Owing to these merits, the as-built electrode with an ultrahigh sulfur loading of 14.4 mg cm(-2) manifests a high initial areal capacity of 10.4 mAh cm(-2), still retains 8.8 mAh cm(-2) (612 mAh g(-1) in gravimetriccapacity) over 50 cycles. The best cycling performance is achieved upon 800 cycles with an extremely low decay rate of 0.06% at 2 C. Furthermore, a flexible soft-packaged Li-S battery is readily assembled, which highlights stable electrochemical characteristics under bending and even folding. This cathode structural design may open up a potential avenue for practical application of high-sulfur-loading Li-S batteries toward flexible energy-storage devices.

Abstract:Graphene-sulfur (G-S) hybrid materials with sulfur nanocrystals anchored on interconnected fibrous graphene are obtained by a facile one-pot strategy using a sulfur/carbon disulfide/alcohol mixed solution. The reduction of graphene oxide and the formation/binding of sulfur nanocrystals were integrated. The G-S hybrids exhibit a highly porous network structure constructed by fibrous graphene, many electrically conducting pathways, and easily tunable sulfur content, which can be cut and pressed into pellets to be directly used as lithium-sulfur battery cathodes without using a metal current-collector, binder, and conductive additive. The porous network and sulfur nanocrystals enable rapid ion transport and short Li(+) diffusion distance, the interconnected fibrous graphene provides highly conductive electron transport pathways, and the oxygen-containing (mainly hydroxyl/epoxide) groups show strong binding with polysulfides, preventing their dissolution into the electrolyte based on first-principles calculations. As a result, the G-S hybrids show a high capacity, an excellent high-rate performance, and a long life over 100 cycles. These results demonstrate the great potential of this unique hybrid structure as cathodes for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries.
Graphene-based three-dimensional hierarchical sandwich-type architecture for high-performance Li/S batteries

Abstract:A multiwalled carbon nanotube/sulfur (MWCNT@S) composite with core-shell structure was successfully embedded into the interlay galleries of graphene sheets (GS) through a facile two-step assembly process. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy images reveal a 3D hierarchical sandwich-type architecture of the composite GS-MWCNT@S. The thickness of the S layer on the MWCNTs is ~20 nm. Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis confirm that the sulfur in the composite is highly crystalline with a mass loading up to 70% of the composite. This composite is evaluated as a cathode material for Li/S batteries. The GS-MWCNT@S composite exhibits a high initial capacity of 1396 mAh/g at a current density of 0.2C (1C = 1672 mA/g), corresponding to 83% usage of the sulfur active material. Much improved cycling stability and rate capability are achieved for the GS-MWCNT@S composite cathode compared with the composite lacking GS or MWCNT. The superior electrochemical performance of the GS-MWCNT@S composite is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of GS and MWCNTs, which provide a 3D conductive network for electron transfer, open channels for ion diffusion, strong confinement of soluble polysulfides, and effective buffer for volume expansion of the S cathode during discharge.

Abstract:3D electrodes are widely researched for high sulfur loading, but still face challenges toward practical applications due to complex design, limited long cycling stability, and high volumetric changes. Herein, we report an efficient, facile, and cost-effective carbon-tungsten disulfide twisted cloth fibers (C/WS2-TCF/S) as a 3D cathode for Li-S battery. The C/WS2-TCF/S cathode combines the advantages of evenly-dispersed C/WS2 matrices and interconnected twisted cloth fiber networks which trap the polysulfide species, accommodate large active sulfur, and maintain the stable cycling performance even cycled at higher sulfur loading. In situ Raman spectroscopy further reveals the low shuttling effect observed with C/WS2-TCF/S cathode. With sulfur loadings of 2 mg cm(-2), 3.5 mg cm(-2), and 5 mg cm(-2), C/WS2-TCF/S cathode shows high specific capacities at 1C. Moreover, for a sulfur loading of 4.5 mg cm(-2), an initial discharge capacity of 722 mA h g(-1) is delivered with capacity decay of 0.06% per cycle over 500 cycles at 0.5C. This work is valuable for the efficient design and preparation of high-loading cathode of lithium-sulfur batteries.
3D Hierarchical Nitrogen-Doped Graphene/cnts Microspheres As a Sulfur Host for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The practical applications for Li-S batteries rely on the restriction of shuttle effect from polysulfides and the improvement of conductivity of sulfur and Li2S. 3D hierarchical nitrogen-doped graphene/carbon nanotubes (N-GCNTs) microspheres were prepared by one-step ultrasonic spraying deposition method. N-GCNTs microspheres are consisted of sucrose, graphene and water-soluble carbon nanotubes and are named according to different mass ratio, like N-GCNTs-1 (1:1:1), N-GCNTs-2 (1:3:1) and N-GCNTs-3 (1:5:1). N-GCNTs-2 microspheres have 3D porous structure with abundant of N atoms which is constituted by the intertwine of nanotubes and graphene, and maintained the characteristics of 1D and 2D nano-carbon. By contrast, N-GCNTs-1 microspheres shows broken microspheres connected by a few CNTs, and N-GCNTs-3 microspheres expose the smoother and integrated spheres which are hardly found CNTs. N-GCNTs-2 microspheres mainly manifest the eminent physical characterization for big BET specific surface area (575.8 m(2)g(-1)) and pore volumes (0.303568 cm(3)g(-1)) and high sulfur content (87.5%). Moreover, N-GCNTs-2 microspheres show the high initial discharge capacities of 1465.1 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C, good cycle stability of 1315.1 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles and outstanding long-term cycling performance of 849.1 mAh g(-1) after 500 cycles at 2.0 C. The N-GCNTs-2 microspheres effectively enhance the electrochemical performance of cathodes for lithium-sulfur batteries due to 3D hierarchical porous structure and successful N-doping. Abstract:The intrinsic contradiction between high loading and high capacity in sulfur cathode severely limits the commercial viability of Li-S batteries. Herein, Graphene/TiO2 decorated N-doped carbon foam (G/) is proposed as three-dimensional (3D) current collector for high loading sulfur cathode. This rationally designed current collector can not only provide enough space to accommodate active sulfur, but also endow sulfur cathode with strong polysulfide confining ability. More interestingly, 3D porous conductive structure has sufficient channels to realize rapid mass mobilization; meanwhile the high conductivity networks boost transfer kinetics of electrons. The electrochemical measurements demonstrate that G//S cathode has a remarkable capacity of 788 mA h g-1 (5.83 mA h cm-2) at 0.1 A g-1 after 100 cycles with a high sulfur loading of 7.4 mg cm-2. This work provides new insights on multifunctional current collectors for thick sulfur cathodes in Li-S batteries.

Abstract:In the development of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, various approaches have been adopted to enhance the electronic conductivity of the sulfur cathode and alleviate the shuttle effect of polysulfides; however, the strategies providing efficient solutions are still limited. To further improve the electrochemical performance of Li-S batteries, in this work we propose a new strategy involving the incorporation of a three-dimensional functional spongy framework as polysulfide reservoir layer, with strong absorbability and electrocatalytic activity towards sulfur species. The spongy framework has a hierarchical architecture composed of highly conductive Ni foam/graphene/carbon nanotubes/MnO2 nanoflakes (NGCM). The strongly interconnected Ni foam, graphene, and carbon nanotubes of the NGCM sponge facilitate electron transfer during discharge/charge processes; moreover, the superlyophilic properties of the NGCM sponge ensure good wettability and interface contact with the Li-S electrolyte, and the porous MnO2 nanoflakes provide strong chemisorptive and electrocatalytic effects on polysulfides (as confirmed theoretically and experimentally). The NGCM sponge, serving as a polysulfide reservoir layer attached on a conventional sulfur-mixed carbon nanotubes (S/CNTs) cathode, can provide improved reversible capacity, rate capability (593 mAh·g–1 at 3.0 C), and cycling stability. In addition, the self-discharge rate is greatly reduced, owing to the efficient conservation of polysulfides in the NGCM spongy framework.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hybridized with a conductive matrix could potentially serve as a sulfur host for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery electrodes; so far most of the previously studied hybrid structures are in the powder form or thin compact films. This study reports 3D porous MOF@carbon nanotube (CNT) networks by grafting MOFs with tailored particle size uniformly throughout a CNT sponge skeleton. Growing larger-size MOF particles to entrap the conductive CNT network yields a mutually embedded structure with high stability, and after sulfur encapsulation, it shows an initial discharge capacity of approximate to 1380 mA h g(-1) (at 0.1 C) and excellent cycling stability with a very low fading rate. Furthermore, owing to the 3D porous network that is suitable for enhanced sulfur loading, a remarkable areal capacity of approximate to 11 mA h cm(-2) (at 0.1 C) is obtained, which is much higher than other MOF-based hybrid electrodes. The mutually embedded MOF@CNTs with simultaneously high specific capacity, areal capacity, and cycling stability represent an advanced candidate for developing high-performance Li-S batteries and other energy storage systems.
