Abstract:In this fast track communication, we realized a high energy and peak power broadband (Δλ = 10 nm) all-fiber Yb fiber amplifier chain for the generation of pulses at a wavelength near 1.064 μm, which can possibly be applied in high peak power systems such as high power fiber-laser-driven extreme-ultraviolet lithography or fiber-based inertial confinement fusion (ICF). This system is capable of yielding 31 mJ, 12 ns pulses with peak power above a megawatt at a repetition rate of 20 Hz. Also, to make this system more applicable, a large mode combiner is made to realize an all-fiber structure. Since the system is operated at a low repetition rate, in order to suppress the ASE built between pulse intervals, multi-stage pulse pump technology is applied. Amplification characteristics in the condition of different pump widths were measured.

Abstract:We demonstrated the synchronized high-power ytterbium-doped fiber amplification of the near-infrared spectral fraction of a few-cycle Ti:sapphire laser at 79.5-MHz repetition rate, which was experimentally realized with a two-stage ytterbium-doped fiber pre-amplifier and a two-stage double-clad fiber power amplifier in cascade. An overall power amplification up to 86.1 dB was achieved at 1030 nm with sufficient suppression of amplified spontaneous emission noises, achieving to the best of our knowledge the highest synchronized laser pulses of 262 W in average power. The amplified high-power pulses were demonstrated to maintain good temporal synchronization with the few-cycle signal pulses. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrate a high repetition rate, high average power narrow-linewidth fiber amplifier at 1.55 μm eye-safe waveband by using a very-large-mode-area active fiber doping Er and Yb, having a 60-μm-diameter core and a 600-μm-diameter inner cladding. A maximum average power reaches 16 W at a 10 kHz repetition rate for 600 ns pulses in the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) free operation, which calculates to a 1.6 mJ pulse energy and 2.7 kW peak power. In addition, the peak power rises to 4.9 kW with 148 ns pulses at the onset of SBS. The signal peak is located at 1,551.15 nm with a 36 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In order to eliminate the pulse steepening, the pulse shaping technology using a triangular-like wave with a slower rising edge is applied on the input pulses. The half-width of the frequency-intensity spectrum from high-average-power fiber amplifier is about 1.02 MHz, approaching the Fourier transform limit.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband fiber amplifier system emitting 10nm pulses with 33mJ pulse energy at repetition rates between 1 and 20Hz. In combination with a pulse width of 10ns, a corresponding peak output power over than 3MW was achieved. This record performance was enabled by fiber with core diameter of 200μm. Furthermore, in order to suppress amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), multi-stage pulse pump technology was applied and different pumping characteristics had been measured. Finally, 15% extraction efficiency was obtained when output energy reached 33mJ. Output capability of the amplifier was not limited by SBS and ASE but the pump peak power.

Abstract:We demonstrate a femtosecond Yb:fiber laser amplification system which delivers 97 W average output power at a repetition rate of 1.08 GHz using a rod-type photonic crystal fiber. The re-compressed output pulse is 233 fs. Numerical simulation was also conducted in agreement with our experimental results.

Abstract:We report on the fiber-based amplification of a commercially packaged, fiber-pigtailed-pulsed diode laser operating at wavelength of 1064nm (bandwidth 0.45nm). The cascaded Yb-doped fiber amplifier can operate safely by using cascaded Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) in each single-mode amplification stage. The total isolation of cascaded WDM can protect the laser diodes from destroyed by feedback of optical power. At repetition rate of 50kHz, pulse duration of 20ns, and average power of 0.5mW, output power up to 1.05W And peak power up to 1.05kW are obtained, with a high signal to noise ratio of 20dB. The whole system is a good choice for a preamplifier of high-power short-pulse amplification. The aim of the experiment is to study the design of preamplifier for high-power short-pulse amplifier via cascaded fiber-based amplifier. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:A linearly polarized single-transverse-mode Yb-doped double clad polarization-maintaining fiber amplifier at 1064nm is reported, which delivers 53.1W average power at 40kHz repetition rate, with pulse energy > 1mJ, duration 30ns, polarization extinction ratio 13dB, and M-2 < 1.2. Abstract:In order to study a two-stage Yb~(3+)-doped fiber amplifier for low repetition frequency pulses,a pulse driven laser diode was used as the seed source to obtain rectangle optical pulses with repetition rate of 100Hz,full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 100ns and energy of 30nJ.In the first stage,8.2 μJ pulse energy was obtained by a single mode Yb~(3+)-doped fiber amplifier,in which amplified spontaneous emission was restrained efficiently by means of the method of round-trip amplification. Pumped by 980nm high power multimode laser diodes,the second stage was a double clad Yb~(3+)-doped fiber amplifier with 15 μm fiber core diameter.242μJ output pulse energy was obtained at 7.3W pump power.The FWHM was compressed to 29ns.A near diffraction limited beam was produced from the amplifier with quasi-single mode output.The results shows that the high pulse energy fiber laser has advantage of simple all fiber structure.

Abstract:Hundreds of picosecond pulses amplifier based on Yb-doped tapered fiber can serve as the primary power amplifier stage for an all-fiber and polarization-maintained picosecond pulse laser system. Here, we report a high-power narrow-linewidth amplifier stage by using the Yb-doped tapered fiber. In the regime, we have demonstrated amplification of 201.4 ps pulses centered at 1031.4 nm with a spectral width of 0.54 nm to 105 W average power at a repetition rate of 29.3 MHz. The picosecond pulses had a high beam quality with a measured M2 value of 1.36 ∼ 1.51, and the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency reached 56 %. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a high-power amplifier based on Yb-doped tapered fiber, capable of amplifying hundreds of picosecond pulses beyond the hectowatt-level average power, while maintaining high beam quality. This achievement highlights the immense potential of Yb-doped tapered fiber in the field of picosecond pulse power amplification. At last, we have refined the model for the transmission and amplification of picosecond pulses in Yb-doped tapered optical fibers, thereby enhancing simulation accuracy by 8 % and providing valuable references for the in-depth research of tapered fiber pulse amplifiers.

Abstract:We reported a 26 W linearly polarized single-mode Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber amplifier, working at 80 kHz repetition rate with 4.5 ns duration, corresponding 72 kW peak power. Using a acousto-optic Q-switched Nd:YVO4 laser as the seed source, the 26 W average power of 1064 nm laser was obtained at a repetition rate of 80 kHz from a Yb-doped photonic crystal fiber amplifier, with 4.5 ns duration, polarization extinction ratio 11 dB and M 2 < 1.2.

Abstract:Ultrafast fiber lasers combining high peak power and excellent beam quality in the 1-µm wavelength range have been explored to applications in industry, medicine and fundamental science. Here, we report generation of a high-energy sub 300 fs polarization maintaining fiber chirped pulse amplification (CPA) system by using a Yb-doped large mode area tapered polarization maintaining (PM) optical fiber with the core/cladding diameters of 35/250 µm at the thin end and 56/400 µm at the thick end. The taper fiber design features a confined core for selective gain amplification and multi-layer cladding for enhanced suppression of higher order modes. In this regime, we have demonstrated 266 fs pulse amplification with peak power of up to 132 MW at a repetition rate of 2 MHz and high beam quality with measured M2 value of 1.1∼1.3. To the best of our knowledge, it is the highest peak power reported in such tapered Yb-doped fiber (T-YDF) amplifier in the femtosecond regime. This work indicates the great potential of the T-YDF to realize further power scaling, high laser efficiency, and excellent beam quality in high-power femtosecond fiber lasers.

Abstract:Fiber sources for high-energy bursts of pulses are attractive for use in coherent pulse stacking (CPS) [1,2], and can avoid damage and excessive nonlinearities even at extracted energy of several times the saturation energy. CPS has so far been used with chirped pulse amplification, but it can also be used for narrow-linewidth pulses, which can be severely limited by the potentially low threshold of stimulated Brillouin scattering. Here, we present a high-energy narrow-linewidth linearly-polarized pulse-burst Yb-doped fiber MOPA system, which can be used for CPS when combined with appropriate amplitude and phase control. A long coiled booster fiber mitigates thermal effects even at high power and maintains polarization by virtue of a low birefringence.

Abstract:We report on the generation of 80-W average power 38-fs laser pulse from a 2-m polarization-maintaining large-mode-area photonic crystal fiber amplifier with high pump absorption coefficient. The pre-chirping management was demonstrated to play a key role on the self-similar amplification. The achieved spectral bandwidth and compressed pulse duration were determined by the interplay between self-phase modulation and finite gain bandwidth. The power scaling in the self-similar fiber amplifier system was eventually limited by the onset of stimulated Raman scattering. (c) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We demonstrated all-fiber amplification of 11 ps pulses from a gain-switched laser diode at 1064 nm. The diode was driven at a repetition rate of 40 MHz and delivered 13 $\mu$W of fiber-coupled average output power. For the low output pulse energy of 325 fJ we have designed a multi-stage core pumped pre-amplifier in order to keep the contribution of undesired amplified spontaneous emission as low as possible. By using a novel time-domain approach for determining the power spectral density ratio (PSD) of signal to noise, we identified the optimal working point for our pre-amplifier. After the pre-amplifier we reduced the 40 MHz repetition rate to 1 MHz using a fiber coupled pulse-picker. The final amplification was done with a cladding pumped Yb-doped large mode area fiber and a subsequent Yb-doped rod-type fiber. With our setup we reached a total gain of 73 dB, resulting in pulse energies of >5.6 $\mu$J and peak powers of >0.5 MW. The average PSD-ratio of signal to noise we determined to be 18/1 at the output of the final amplification stage.

Abstract:A pulsed pumped Yb-doped double-clad fiber (DCF) master-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) at low repetition rate is reported. Seeded by a passive Q-switched Nd:YAG microchip laser, the fiber amplifier can generate 167-kW peak-power and 0.83-ns duration pulses at 200-Hz repetition rate. Because of the pulsed pump approach, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and the spurious lasing between pulses are well avoided, and the repetition rate can be set freely from single-shot to 1 kHz. Peak power scaling limitations that arise from the fiber facet damage are discussed.

Abstract:We demonstrate a nanosecond fiber laser with tunable central wavelengths and narrow spectral bandwidths suitable for high-power amplification. Spectrally narrowband flat-top nanosecond pulses were generated at the fundamental repetition rate of 1.9 MHz in an Yb-doped fiber laser, which could be tuned in central wavelength from 1033 to 1053 nm by changing the nonlinear polarization rotation in the fiber laser cavity. In particular, such flat-top nanosecond pulses could be tuned around 1030 nm to match the gain bandwidth of ytterbium- doped double-clad fibers or 1053 nm to match the maximum gain in Nd-doped phosphate glass. The pulse duration could be changed from 1 to 15 ns by varying the pump power or laser polarization evolution in the cavity. By using an ytterbium-doped single-mode fiber preamplifier and a two-stage large-mode-area Yb-doped double-clad-fiber power amplifier, 280-W average power with pulse duration of 3 ns was obtained at 1034 nm.
