Abstract:Wearable pulse detection devices can be used for daily human healthcare monitoring; however, the relatively poor flexibility and low sensitivity of the pulse detection devices are hindering the scrutiny of pulse information during pulse diagnosis of different pulse positions. This paper developed a novel and wearable pulse detection device based on three flexible pressure sensors using synthetic graphene and silver composites as the pressure sensing material. The structural design of the pulse detection device is firstly presented; the core component of pressure sensors is using the sawtooth protrusions to convert pressure induced by radial pulse vibrations into localized deformation of graphene composites. The fabricated pulse detection device is characterized by high pressure sensing performance, including relatively high sensitivity (8.65% kPa−1), broad sensing range (12 kPa), and good dynamic response with a response time of about 100 ms. Then, the pulse detection device is worn on a human wrist to detect the pulses from three pulse positions, namely, ‘Cun’, ‘Guan’, and ‘Chi’, and the results demonstrated the capability of using our device to detect pulse signals. The physical conditions of the subject, such as arterial stiffness index, can be further analyzed through the characteristics of the acquired pulse signals, demonstrating the potential application of using wearable pulse detection devices for human health monitoring.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensor plays a crucial role in wearable devices since it converts the physical signals of human motions into electrical signals. Among various pressure sensors, foam-based pressure sensors received great attention due to their excellent flexibility, low weight, and pressure resistance. However, the sensitivity of the foam-based pressure sensor is still not large enough, and the sensing range is also urged to be further improved. Herein, we proposed a high-performance foam-based pressure sensor composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), and nanofibers (FIBER). The PDMS/FIBER@MWCNT foam-based pressure sensor possessed outstanding sensitivity up to 4.07 kPa − 1 and a wide sensing range of 0–70 kPa. The pressure sensor also presented excellent linearity during 0–20 kPa and 20–70 kPa, respectively. And 2000 cyclic compression tests shown good cyclic stability. Meanwhile, the pressure sensor worked efficiently in monitoring subtle and large human motions, such as finger bending, wrist bending, throat vocal signals, and various pressures. In addition, the pressure sensor owned significant discrimination and high efficiency against different pressure, which is beneficial in human complex motion monitoring and signal analysis of wearable devices. Consequently, the PDMS/FIBER@MWCNT foam-based pressure sensor may possess promising prospects and potential in the applications of artificial electrical skin and wearable devices.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have promising applications in wearable electronic devices. However, fabricating flexible pressure sensors with wide linear range and high sensitivity remain a great challenge. Herein, a micro-nano hybrid conductive elastomer film based on carbon materials with arched micro-patterns array on surface (P-HCF) is developed to show expected sensing properties through a sustainable route. The 1D carbon fibers (CFs) and 0D carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) were incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix to construct a 3D conductive network consisting of physical contact and tunneling effect among carbon materials to improve the sensing range and sensitivity. The arched micro-patterns of the P-HCF, which is designed mimicking the human fingerprints, influences the pressure distribution inside the material, giving rise to a linear sensitivity over the whole sensing range. Finite element analysis (FEA) method is investigated to simulate and analyze the compression process. The P-HCF sensor exhibits both a high sensitivity of 26.6 kPa−1 and an exceptionally wide linear range of 20 Pa − 600 kPa. The devices were demonstrated in monitoring artery pulses, assisting in diagnosing Parkinson's disease, and analyzing gait for healthcare. Furthermore, the sensors are integrated into complex devices to realize pressure distribution detection, controlling manipulator, and operating PC games. The attainment of excellent pressure sensing performance of the P-HCF, potentially initiates vast applications in health monitoring and human-machine interfaces.

Abstract:With the fast development of electronic skin, there is a great demand for wearable sensing devices. Herein, a piezoresistive sensor has been fabricated comprising a conductive film of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) sandwiched by two protection films of PDMS. A simple and low-cost manufacturing method has been proposed to wrap CNTs inside the flexible PDMS to obtain a soft sensor with excellent conductivity, high sensitivity, and fast response to various pressures. Additionally, films with different percentages of CNTs were compared. The results show that the film with 7% CNTs has higher conductivity and sensitivity. Moreover, the surface morphologies and microstructures of the superior PDMS-CNTs film were studied by scanning electron microscope, and sensing properties of the pressure sensor were tested. Furthermore, applications of single sensor and sensor array were studied. The results exhibit that the as-prepared pressure sensor successfully detected different human motions and recognized Morse code and words, indicating that the portable sensor can be potentially applied in wide areas such as smart devices and flexible robotics.

Abstract:Wearable pressure sensors have attracted widespread attention in recent years because of their great potential in human healthcare applications such as physiological signals monitoring. A desirable pressure sensor should possess the advantages of high sensitivity, a simple manufacturing process, and good stability. Here, we present a highly sensitive, simply fabricated wearable resistive pressure sensor based on three-dimensional microstructured carbon nanowalls (CNWs) embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. The method of using unpolished silicon wafers as templates provides an easy approach to fabricate the irregular microstructure of CNWs/PDMS electrodes, which plays a significant role in increasing the sensitivity and stability of resistive pressure sensors. The sensitivity of the CNWs/PDMS pressure sensor with irregular microstructures is as high as 6.64 kPa−1 in the low-pressure regime, and remains fairly high (0.15 kPa−1) in the high-pressure regime (~10 kPa). Both the relatively short response time of ~30 ms and good reproducibility over 1000 cycles of pressure loading and unloading tests illustrate the high performance of the proposed device. Our pressure sensor exhibits a superior minimal limit of detection of 0.6 Pa, which shows promising potential in detecting human physiological signals such as heart rate. Moreover, it can be turned into an 8 × 8 pixels array to map spatial pressure distribution and realize array sensing imaging.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors as electronic skins have attracted wide attention to their potential applications for healthcare and intelligent robotics. However, the tradeoff between their sensitivity and pressure range restricts their practical applications in various healthcare fields. Herein, a cost-effective flexible pressure sensor with an ultrahigh sensitivity over an ultrawide pressure-range is developed by combining a sandpaper-molded multilevel microstructured polydimethylsiloxane and a reduced oxide graphene film. The unique multilevel microstructure via a two-step sandpaper-molding method leads to an ultrahigh sensitivity (2.5-1051 kPa-1 ) and can detect subtle and large pressure over an ultrawide range (0.01-400 kPa), which covers the overall pressure regime in daily life. Sharp increases in the contact area and additional contact sites caused by the multilevel microstructures jointly contribute to such unprecedented performance, which is confirmed by in situ observation of the gap variations and the contact states of the sensor under different pressures. Examples of the flexible pressure sensors are shown in potential applications involving the detection of various human physiological signals, such as breathing rate, vocal-cord vibration, heart rate, wrist pulse, and foot plantar pressure. Another object manipulation application is also demonstrated, where the material shows its great potential as electronic skin intelligent robotics and prosthetic limbs.
A Wrinkled Ag/CNTs-PDMS Composite Film for a High-Performance Flexible Sensor and Its Applications in Human-Body Single Monitoring

Abstract:In this paper, a flexible Ag/CNTs-PDMS (polydimethylsi-loxane) composite film sensor based on the novel design philosophy was prepared. Its force-electric effect mechanism is based on the generation of micro-cracks in the Ag film during external forcing, leading to resistance variation. Experimental results find that Ag film thickness has a strong influence on the sensor’s sensitivity, which exhibits a tendency of first increasing and then decreasing the Ag film thickness, and also has an optimal thickness of 4.9 μm for the maximum sensitivity around 30. The sensitive mechanism can be theoretically explained by using the quantum tunneling effect. Due to the use of the wrinkled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) film, this sensor has advantages, such as high sensitivity, large strain range, good stability and durability, cheap price, and suitability for large-scale production. Preliminary applications on human-body monitoring reveal that the sensor can detect weak tremors and breathe depth and rate, and the corresponding heartbeat response. It provides possibilities to diagnose early Parkinson’s disease and exploit an early warning system for sudden infant death syndrome and sleep apnea in adults. In addition, as a force-electric effect sensor, it is expected to have broad application areas, such as a man-machine cooperation, and a robotic system.

Abstract:Elastic pressure sensors play a crucial role in the digital economy, such as in health care systems and human–machine interfacing. However, the low sensitivity of these sensors restricts their further development and wider application prospects. This issue can be resolved by introducing microstructures in flexible pressure-sensitive materials as a common method to improve their sensitivity. However, complex processes limit such strategies. Herein, a cost-effective and simple process was developed for manufacturing surface microstructures of flexible pressure-sensitive films. The strategy involved the combination of MXene–single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) with mass-produced Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microspheres to form advanced microstructures. Next, the conductive silica gel films with pitted microstructures were obtained through a 3D-printed mold as flexible electrodes, and assembled into flexible resistive pressure sensors. The sensor exhibited a sensitivity reaching 2.6 kPa−1 with a short response time of 56 ms and a detection limit of 5.1 Pa. The sensor also displayed good cyclic stability and time stability, offering promising features for human health monitoring applications.

Abstract:The research on flexible pressure sensors has drawn widespread attention in recent years, especially in the fields of health care and intelligent robots. In practical applications, the sensitivity of sensors directly affects the precision and integrity of weak pressure signals. Here, a pressure sensor with high sensitivity and a wide measurement range composed of porous fiber paper and 3D patterned electrodes is proposed. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes with excellent conductivity were evenly sprayed on the fiber paper to form the natural spatial conducting networks, while the copper-deposited polydimethylsiloxane films with micro-pyramids array were used as electrodes and flexible substrates. Increased conducting paths between electrodes and fibers can be obtained when high-density micro-pyramids fall into the porous structures of the fiber paper under external pressure, thereby promoting the pressure sensor to show an ultra-high sensitivity of 17.65 kPa−1 in the pressure range of 0–2 kPa, 16 times that of the device without patterned electrodes. Besides, the sensor retains a high sensitivity of 2.06 kPa−1 in an ultra-wide measurement range of 150 kPa. Moreover, the sensor can detect various physiological signals, including pulse and voice, while attached to the human skin. This work provides a novel strategy to significantly improve the sensitivity and measurement range of flexible pressure sensors, as well as demonstrates attractive applications in physiological signal monitoring.

Abstract:Flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors are gaining significant attention, particularly in the realm of flexible wearable electronic skin. Here, a flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor was developed with a broad sensing range and high sensitivity. We achieved this by curing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on sandpaper, creating a PDMS film as the template with a micro-protrusion structure. The core sensing layer was formed using a composite of silver nanowires (AgNWs) and waterborne polyurethane (WPU) with a similar micro-protrusion structure. The sensor stands out with its exceptional sensitivity, showing a value of 1.04×106 kPa-1 with a wide linear range from 0 to 27 kPa. It also boasts a swift response and recovery time of 160 ms, coupled with a low detection threshold of 17 Pa. Even after undergoing more than 1000 cycles, the sensor continues to deliver stable performance. The flexible piezoresistive pressure sensor based on AgNWs/WPU composite film (AWCF) can detect small pressure changes such as pulse, swallowing, etc., which indicates that the sensor has great application potential in monitoring human movement and flexible wearable electronic skin.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have attracted considerable attention because of their potential applications in healthcare monitoring and human-machine interactions. However, the complicated fabrication process and the cos of sensing materials limit their widespread applications in practice. Herein, a flexible pressure sensor with outstanding performances is presented through an extremely simple and cost-efficient fabrication process. The sensing materials of the sensor are based on low-cost carbon black (CB)@airlaid paper (AP) composites, which are just prepared by drop-casting CB solutions onto APs. Through simply stacking multiple CB@APs with an irregular surface and a fiber-network structure, the obtained pressure sensor demonstrates an ultrahigh sensitivity of 51.23 kPa(-1) and an ultralow detection limit of 1 Pa. Additionally, the sensor exhibits fast response time, wide working range, good stability, as well as excellent flexibility and biocompatibility. All the comprehensive and superior performances endow the sensor with abilities to precisely detect weak air flow, wrist pulse, phonation, and wrist bending in real time. In addition, an array electronic skin integrated with multiple CB@AP sensors has been designed to identify spatial pressure distribution and pressure magnitude. Through a biomimetic structure inspired by blooming flowers, a sensor with the open-petal structure has been designed to recognize the wind direction. Therefore, our study, which demonstrates a flexible pressure sensor with low cost, simple preparation, and superior performances, will open up for the exploration of cost-efficient pressure sensors in wearable devices.

Abstract:Ultrathin flexible pressure sensors are highly desirable for human physiological signal monitoring due to their portability and ability to conform to the body. However, existing ultrathin pressure sensors face challenges in balancing the sensitivity and their range. A spatial-dimensionally constrained strategy was proposed to construct an ultrathin active layer. In detail, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with an average length of ∼1.3 μm were intentionally spin-coated into a thin thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) film with a thickness of 1.5 μm. By doing so, a quasi-2D MWCNTs conductive network is constructed, which enabled the sensor to have ultrahigh sensitivity of 27.04 kPa −1 , a wide liner detection range of 0.2–24 kPa, ultrafast response time of 40 ms and a recovery time of 10 ms, and high durability in 1500 cycles under 0.2 kPa with loading/unloading frequency of 2 Hz. Thanks to this superior performance, the ultrathin pressure sensor can be used to monitor human movement and physiological signals, including finger touch, finger bending, wrist bending, and deep breathing. Moreover, the sensor can be attached to the side wall of the tip of the renal ureteroscope, allowing for the monitoring of renal pelvic pressure. Therefore, this spatial-dimensionally constrained strategy will open up a new way to fabricate highly sensitive ultrathin pressure sensors and have great application prospects in health monitoring.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors have attracted great attention due to their potential in the wearable devices market and in particular in human-machine interactive interfaces. Pressure sensors with high sensitivity, wide measurement range, and low-cost are now highly desired for such practical applications. In the present investigation, an ultrasensitive pressure sensor with wide measurement range has been successfully fabricated. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (uniformly sprayed on the surface of paper) comprise the sensitivity material, while lithographed interdigital electrodes comprise the substrate. Due to the synergistic effects of CNT's high specific surface area, paper's porous structure, interdigital electrodes' efficient contact with CNT, our pressure sensor realizes a wide measurement range from 0 to 140 kPa and exhibits excellent stability through 15,000 cycles of testing. For the paper-based CNT film/interdigitated structure (PCI) pressure sensor, the connection area between the sensitive material and interdigital electrodes dominates in the low-pressure region, while internal change within the sensitive materials plays the leading role in the high-pressure region. Additionally, the PCI pressure sensor not only displays a high sensitivity of 2.72 kPa−1 (up to 35 kPa) but also can detect low pressures, such as that exerted by a resting mung bean (about 8 Pa). When attached to the surface of a human body, the pressure sensor can monitor physiological signals, such as wrist movement, pulse beats, or movement of throat muscles. Furthermore, the pressure sensor array can identify the spatial pressure distribution, with promising applications in human-machine interactive interfaces.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors play important roles in electronic skins (E-Skins), which mimic the mechanical forces sensing properties of human skin. A rational design for a pressure sensor with adjustable characteristics is in high demand for different application scenarios. Here, we present tunable, ultrasensitive, and flexible pressure sensors based on compressible wrinkled microstructures. Modifying the morphology of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microstructure enables the device to obtain different sensitivities and pressure ranges for different requirements. Further, by intentionally introducing hollow structures in the PDMS wrinkles, our pressure sensor exhibits an ultra-high sensitivity of 14.268 kPa. The elastic microstructure-based capacitive sensor also possesses a very low detectable pressure limit (1.5 Pa), a fast response time (<50 ms), a wide pressure range and excellent cycling stability. Implementing respiratory monitoring and vocalization recognition is realized by attaching the flexible pressure sensor onto the chest and throat, respectively, showing its great application potential for disease diagnosis, monitoring, and other advanced clinical/biological wearable technologies.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors are attracting considerable attention due to their potential applications in human health monitoring and human-machine interfaces. However, it is hard to achieve both high sensitivity and wide linear detection range, and the complicated fabrication process restricts their practical applications. Herein, a simple and scalable fabrication process for a flexible pressure sensor with high sensitivity and wide detection range has been developed by combining the silver nanowires coated, laser-ablated hierarchical microstructured polydimethylsiloxane, and an interdigital electrode. The hierarchical microstructures contribute to the high sensitivity of 4.48 kPa−1 and increase detection range from 0 to 65 kPa. The increase in the contact area and subsequent additional contact sites of the hierarchical microstructures lead to the high-performance. Arterial pulse, breathing, and static tremors have been measured by attaching the device to the human body. Moreover, a pressure sensor array has been fabricated to illustrate the scalability of this strategy. The results demonstrate that the flexible pressure sensor with simple and scalable fabrication capability has promising applications in wearable electronic skins.

Abstract:The advancement of wearable tactile sensors that involves with high sensitivity under ultra-low pressures is crucial for varieties of human-machine interactive applications, like smart phones, healthcare monitoring, and electronic skins. Here in this paper, a soft capacitive tactile sensing array is introduced based on hierarchically porous multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite, which leads to sensitivity improvement attributing to a synergistic effect of the hierarchically porous elastomer and conductive MWCNTs supplements. The proposed device exhibits superior pressure-sensing performances, with high sensitivity (3.58 kPa-1) under small mechanical stimuli (<80 Pa), broad measuring range (0-265 kPa), fast response time (<45 ms), good repeatability, minimum limit of detection (<10 Pa), as well as low-hysteresis, allowing efficient sensing of pressure from all types of sources, from vulnerable signals such as human breathing, artery and venous pulses, and soft human finger touch to possible brutal variations such as sudden change of object weight or prompt collide. Moreover, extensive body attached experiments confirm that the soft tactile sensing array is fully human compatible and capable for a variety of human-machine interfaces and health monitoring applications.

Abstract:Flexible pressure sensors with high sensitivity have great potential applications in wearable electronics. However, it is still a great challenge to prepare sense electrodes with high flexibility, high sensitivity, and high electrochemical performance. Here, we propose a novel and simple method for carbonizing cotton fibers as excellent electrically conductive materials. Moreover, carbonized cotton fiber (CCF) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) were assembled into a flexible sense electrode. The CCF/PDMS electrode shows a high sensitivity of 10.8 kPa−1, a wide response frequency from 0.2–2.0 Hz, and durability over 900 cycles. The combined CCF/PDMS sensors can monitor human movement and pulse vibration, showing the enormous potential for use in wearable device technology. Additionally, the CCF/PDMS can be used as electrodes with a specific capacitance of 332.5 mF cm−2 at a current density of 5 mA cm−2, thanks to their high electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity, demonstrating the promising prospect of flexible supercapacitors.

Abstract:Flexible and wearable sensors are now becoming the favorite of the new information age for their great prospects, especially in human health monitoring, and which are mainly aimed at improving the comprehensive sensing performance. However, the equilibrium between sensitivity and response time of the sensor has not been well balanced. Herein, a simple and low‐cost strategy to fabricate flexible pressure sensors based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) substrate with unique surface stochastic morphology replicated from the abrasive paper, which is inspired by skin epidermis, is presented. The integrated TPU flexible pressure sensor exhibits a high sensitivity of −2.24 kPa−1 in a linear pressure regime of 0–200 Pa, and the effective working range of this sensor is close to 2 kPa, ultrafast response time and relaxation time of 10 ms, low detection limits of 0.72 Pa, and excellent cycling stability over 3000 cycles. The fabricated sensors demonstrate outstanding sensing capabilities in monitoring human physiological signals, such as subtle pulse, wrist movement, and speech recognition, making promising potential in practical human health monitoring applications.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Since wearable pressure sensors have promising applications in the fields of human physiological signal detection and bionic robots, there is an urgent need for wearable pressure sensors with comprehensive attributes such as high sensitivity and wide detection range. Here, we introduce a facile electrospinning process to fabricate a film composed of thermoplastic polyurethane/carboxyl multiwalled carbon nanotube/V2CTX-MXene (TPU/c-MWCNTs/V2C). This film has high sensitivity and great linearity, designed for flexible piezoresistive sensors. To further enhance sensor performance, we applied a spin-coating of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on the sandpaper surface to create a top substrate with intermittent spinosum structures. Additionally, a layer of TPU fibers was electrospun between the conductive film and the interdigitated electrodes. The assembled components form a flexible piezoresistive sensor with a wide detection range of 0-200 kPa, a high sensitivity of 545.2 kPa-1, a low detection limit of 5Pa, a short response time of 48 ms, and excellent long-term durability after 7000 loading/unloading cycles, making the piezoresistive sensor highly discriminating for detecting complex human movements. Thanks to the great sensing performance and stable structure, we conducted various demonstrations to capture human physiological signals, including signals of muscle activity and pulse. These findings indicate the potential of the designed flexible pressure sensor for applications in electronic skin and smart devices.
