Abstract:This paper reports on a high-repetition-rate dual signal-wave (DSW) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) operating at the 1.5μm band with tunable wavelength intervals from 2.5nm to 69.1nm. Two periodically poled crystals, a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with multiple gratings and a single grating MgO-doped PPLN (PPMgOLN), are cascaded in the same OPO cavity to generate dual signal-waves by using quasi-phase-matched (QPM) technique. The pump source was a Q-switched diode-pumped Nd:YVO4 laser operating at 50kHz. At an incident pump power of 3W, an average output power of 169.6mW at 1489.2nm and 1558.3nm has been achieved.

Abstract:We report a fiber laser pumped dual-wavelength mid-infrared optical parameter oscillator (OPO) based on an aperiodic optical superlattice (AOS) structure. An aperiodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate wafer was designed and fabricated as the nonlinear crystal for the OPO. Using a linearly polarized pulsed Yb fiber laser at 1.064 mu m as the pump source, mid-infrared emissions at 3.3 and 3.8 mu m were obtained simultaneously from the OPO. The total output power at the idler wavelengths of 3.3 and 3.8 mu m reached 3.07 W under the maximum pump power of 27 W. The pump-to-idler conversion efficiency was 11.4% with a ratio of about 1.2:1 for 3.3 mu m and 3.8 mu m.

Abstract:We propose a novel multi-wavelength fiber optical parametric oscillator (MW-FOPO) based on a ring cavity. A highly nonlinear fiber and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed by two 3-dB optical couplers are used as the gain medium and the comb filter, respectively. Multi-wavelength lasing of the MW-FOPO with an ultra-narrow wavelength spacing of about 0.08 nm is achieved. The output spectrum of the MW-FOPO covers a wavelength regime from 1510 nm to 1615 nm (for lasing wavelengths with the power that exceeds -60 dBm). The stability of the MW-FOPO is discussed and experimentally demonstrated. A comparison of the output spectra between the MW-FOPO and the multi-wavelength Erbium-doped fiber laser is also presented.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated a periodically poled magnesium-oxide-doped lithium niobate (PPMgLN)-based, fiber-laser-pumped optical parametric oscillator (OPO) generating idler wavelength of 3.82 μm. The pump fiber laser was constructed with a linearly polarized, semi-fiber-coupled acousto-optic Q-switched fiber oscillator and a polarization-maintaining fiber amplifier with pulse duration of 190 ns at the highest output power. The OPO was specifically configured in single-pass, singly resonant linear cavity structure to avoid the damage risk of the pump fiber laser, which is always a serious issue in the fiber-laser-pumped, double-pass, singly oscillating structured OPOs. Under the highest pump power of 25 W, an idler average output power of 3.27 W with one-hour peak-to-peak instability of 5.2% was obtained. The measured M2 factors were 1.98 and 1.44 for horizontal and vertical axis, respectively. The high power stability and good beam quality demonstrated the suitability of such technology for practical application.

Abstract:With the rapid progress in fiber technologies, femtosecond fiber lasers, which are compact, cost-effective and stable, have been developed and are commercially available. Studies of optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) pumped by this type of laser are demanding. Here we report a femtosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO) at 79.6 MHz repetition rate based on MgO-doped periodically poled LiNbO3 (MgO:PPLN), synchronously pumped by the integrated second harmonic radiation of a femtosecond fiber laser at 532 nm. The signal delivered by the single resonant OPO is continuously tunable from 757 to 797 nm by tuning the crystal temperature in a poling period of 7.7 mu m. The output signal shows good beam quality in TEM00 mode profile with pulse duration of 206 fs at 771 nm. Maximum output signal power of 71 mW is obtained for a pump power of 763 mW and a low pumping threshold of 210 mW is measured. Moreover, grating tuning and cavity length tuning of the signal wavelength are also investigated.

Abstract:We report on a high-power periodically poled MgO-doped lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN)-based femtosecond optical parametric amplifier (OPA), featuring a spectral seamless broadband mid-infrared (MIR) output. By modifying the initial chirp and spectrum of the mode-locked seed laser, the Yb fiber pump laser exhibits a final output power of 14 W with sub-200-fs pulse duration after power amplification and compression. When the OPA was seeded with a broadband amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source, a damage-limited 0.6 W broadband MIR radiation was experimentally obtained under the pump power of 10.15 W at 82 MHz repetition rate, corresponding to an overall OPA conversion efficiency of 32.7%. The 3 dB bandwidth of the mid-IR idler was 291.9 nm, centering at 3.34 μm.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high efficiency mid-infrared laser source based on optical parametric oscillator (OPO) assisted by an intracavity optical parametric amplification (OPA). The OPA-assisted-OPO scheme was realized in one piece of commensurable dual-periodic superlattice in which the signal light generated from the OPO process serves as the pump light for the OPA process. A maximum output power of 508 mW at 3.92 μm was achieved under a pump power of 2.85 W at 1.064 μm. The pump-to-idler conversion efficiency is 17.8% and the slope efficiency is 23.8%, and the enhancements of them are 58.9% and 67.6%, respectively, comparing with the standard OPO scheme.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a compact fiber laser-pumped multichannel PPMgLN-based optical parametric oscillator (OPO) generating total OPO output power of 15.8, 15.2, 14.2, 12.9, and 8.8 W with idler output power of 4.7, 4.3, 4.1, 3.3, and 2.1 W at the wavelength of 3.43, 3.63, 3.72, 3.83, and 3.99 μm, respectively. The OPO was pumped by a fully fiberized polarization maintaining (PM) ytterbium-doped pulsed fiber master oscillation power amplifier (MOPA) operating at 1064 nm at a repetition rate of 65 kHz with effective pump power of 28.7 W. The MOPA system was constructed with an acousto-optic Q-switched fiber laser seed and only one stage PM fiber amplifier without any free space components, which makes the pump system compact and stable in the long-term. Comparisons on efficiencies and signal wavelength shifts between different channels showed that the idler absorption was the main factor preventing high average-power OPO operation with long idler wavelength.

Abstract:We report on a compact high average power optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by an all-solid-state nanosecond 532 nm laser. Based on the merit of non-critically phase-matched crystal without walk-off effect, a 50-mm-long LiB3O5 (LBO) crystal is used as OPO nonlinear crystal to enhance the conversion efficiency and increase the output power. With the available mirror set, continuous tuning from 778 to 1036 nm for signal wave is obtained by changing LBO phase-matching temperature. The maximum average power of signal output is up to 9.4 W at 900 nm for pump power of 18 W inside the LBO crystal, corresponding to a conversion efficiency of 52% only for the signal output. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the highest signal average power generated by nanosecond OPO in single bulk LBO.

Abstract:High-power optical parametric oscillators (OPOs), as mature radiation sources in mid-infrared (MIR), degenerate gradually with wavelength increase, mainly above 3700 nm. Using a periodically poled magnesium-oxide-doped lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) as the nonlinear crystal, we build a high-power signal-resonant OPO pumped by ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL). To improve the OPO’s output power at ~3.8 μm, the parameters, such as the pump beam’s waist diameter and location, the curvature radius of the output coupler and the length of MgO:PPLN, are discussed in detail. When pump power is 79 ± 4 W with a repetition rate of 200 kHz, the OPO provides up to 8 ± 0.4 W average power in beam quality with M2 factors of ~1.84 and ~1.69 in the two axes. Under the highest output power, the center wavelength of the idler beam is 3768.4 nm with a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) bandwidth of ~18.6 nm. When the output power reaches ~6.3 W, its power stability is 1.6% root mean square (RMS) over 7 h. Further analysis of the factors affecting OPO’s performance and simple structure are critically essential for compact OPO prototypes with a capacity of high output power.
Wide-band and Fast Wavelength-Swept Optical Parametric Oscillator with a Photonic Crystal Fiber Based on Dispersion Tuning Technology at 1 Μm

Abstract:A wavelength-swept fiber optical parametric oscillator (FOPO) based on dispersion tuning technology at wavelength around 1 mu m is demonstrated. A continuous wave single-longitudinal-mode ytterbium doped fiber laser with a line-width of 0.05 nm is modulated through a LiNbO3 Mach-Zehnder modulator to be a pulsed source with variable repetition rate. The pulsed source is amplified with a two-stage ytterbium doped fiber amplifier (YDFA) to a mediate power and a high power YDFA to peak power higher than 40 W. And a homemade 50-m photonic crystal fiber (PCF) which provides the optical parametric gain is pumped by the pulsed source. The optical modulator is driven by a frequency-swept electrical clock signal with frequency ranges from 107.24 MHz to 107.31 MHz. Thus the FOPO generates a wavelength-swept light source with a range of 80 nm centered at 1065.10 nm. Through careful customizing the sweeping rate of the driving clock signal, the sweeping rate of the parametric oscillator can be up to 10 kHz, which is limited by currently used electrical sweeping source. The generated pulses train are with pulse width of about 110 ps. For the electrical scan is used instead of the traditional mechanical scanning method in conventional wavelength-swept sources, it performs better stability under prolonged operation. The wavelength-swept FOPO is potential to be applied in OCT systems for its good stability and advantaged wavelength band.
Fiber Optical Parametric Oscillator Based on Photonic Crystal Fiber Pumped with All-Normal-Dispersion Mode-Locked Yb:Fiber Laser

Abstract:We demonstrate a cost effective, linearly tunable fiber optical parametric oscillator based on a home-made photonic crystal fiber pumped with a mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser, providing linely tuning ranges from 1018 nm to 1038 nm for the idler wavelength and from 1097 nm to 1117 nm for the signal wavelength by tuning the pump wavelength and the cavity length. In order to obtain the desired fiber with a zero dispersion wavelength around 1060 nm, eight samples of photonic crystal fibers with gradually changed structural parameters are fabricated for the reason that it is difficult to accurately customize the structural dimensions during fabrication. We verify the usability of the fabricated fiber experimentally via optical parametric generation and conclude a successful procedure of design, fabirication, and verification. A seed source of home-made all-normal-dispersion mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser with 38.57 ps pulsewidth around the 1064 nm wavelength is used to pump the fiber optical parametric oscillator. The wide picosecond pulse pump laser enables a larger walk-off tolerance between the pump light and the oscillating light as well as a longer photonic crystal fiber of 20 m superior to the femtosecond pulse lasers, resulting in a larger parametric amplification and a lower threshold pump power of 15.8 dBm of the fiber optical parametric oscillator.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact high power mid-infrared (MIR) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by a gain-switched linearly polarized, pulsed fiber laser. The gain-switched fiber laser was constructed with a piece of Yb doped polarization maintaining (PM) fiber, a pair of fiber Bragg gratings written into the matched passive PM fiber and 6 pigtailed pump laser diodes working at 915 nm with 30 W output peak power each. By modulating the pulse width of the pump laser diode, simple pedestal-free pulse shape or pedestal-free trailing pulse shape ("figure-of-h" as we call it) could be achieved from the gain-switched fiber laser. The laser was employed as the pump of a two-channel, periodically poled magnesium oxide lithium niobate-based OPO system. High power MIR emission was generated with average output power of 5.15 W at 3.8 mu m channel and 8.54 W at 3.3 mu m channel under the highest pump power of 45 W. The corresponding pump-to-idler conversion efficiency was computed to be 11.7% and 19.1%, respectively. Experimental results verify a significant improvement to signal-to-idler conversion efficiency by using "figure-of-h" pulses over simple pedestal-free pulses. Compared to the master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) fiber laser counterpart, the presented gain switched fiber laser is more attractive in OPO pumping due to its compactness and simplicity which are beneficial to construction of OPO systems for practical MIR applications. Abstract:We report a fiber optical parametric amplifier (FOPA) based on a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with optimized dispersion and nonlinear properties pumped by a mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser. Wavelength-tunable parametric gain bands can be obtained by adjusting the pump wavelength from the anomalous to the normal dispersion regime. By utilizing the PCF-based FOPA, weak signals located in the parametric gain bands can be amplified. Wavelength-tunable picosecond pulses can be generated at the signal and idler wavelengths. A 58-dB maximum gain and a wide gain bandwidth from 999 to 1139 nm have been achieved by pumping near the zero-dispersion wavelength. When the FOPA is pumped at 1062.5 nm in the normal dispersion regime of the PCF, the 974-nm weak continuous-wave signal is significantly amplified, and the idler pulse is generated at 1168 nm.

Abstract:We report a novel temperature insensitive, APMgLN-based, high-power cascaded optical parametric oscillator (OPO) pumped by an Ytterbium-doped fiber laser. A monolithic APMgLN crystal was designed to compensate the phase mismatches for the nonlinear conversions from the pump to the idler and the primary signal to the idler simultaneously in a wide temperature range. Efficient parametric conversion with pump-to-idler conversion efficiency over 15% and slope efficiency higher than 20% was realized from 25 °C to 55 °C. The idler wavelength was down-shifted from 3.82 μm to 3.78 μm accordingly during the temperature rise. The highest idler power of 4.1 W at 3.8 μm under the pump power of 26.5 W was recorded which was improved by ~32% in pump-to-idler conversion efficiency when compared with the PPMgLN-based conventional OPO, in which the highest idler output power was 3.1W under the same pump and thermal condition.

Abstract:We report a high-energy, picosecond, mid-infrared (MIR) optical parametric oscillator (OPO), in which a length of hollow-core-fiber (HCF) is employed to enable operation at 1-MHz repetition rate in a compact cavity format. The OPO is synchronously pumped by an ytterbium-doped-fiber (YDF) master-oscillator-power-amplifier (MOPA) system, seeded by a 1040-nm gain-switched laser diode (GSLD). Using periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) as the nonlinear crystal, the OPO generates signal and idler beams with tunable wavelengths in the range of 1329-1641 nm and 2841-4790 nm, respectively. The OPO provides 137-ps pulses with a maximum signal energy of 10.05 µJ at 1600 nm and a maximum idler energy of 5.13 µJ at 2967 nm. This, to the best of our knowledge, represents the highest energy MIR pulses, as well as the highest total converted pulse energy (15.18 µJ), ever achieved from a fiber laser pumped picosecond OPO.

Abstract:A high efficiency, continuous-wave, narrow linewidth, pump-enhanced optical parametric oscillator (OPO) at 3.8 µm was demonstrated, which was pumped by a 1064 nm fiber laser with a linewidth of 18 kHz. The low frequency modulation locking technique was employed to stabilize the output power. The wavelengths of signal and idler were 1475.5 nm and 3819.9 nm at 25 °C, respectively. The pump-enhanced structure was applied, leading to a maximum quantum efficiency of over 60% with pump power of 3 W. The maximum output power of idler light is 1.8 W with a linewidth of 363 kHz. The excellent tuning performance of the OPO was also demonstrated. In order to avoid mode-splitting and decrease of pump enhancing factor due to feedback light in the cavity, the crystal was placed obliquely to the pump beam and the maximum output power was increased by 19%. At the maximum output power of idler light, the M2 factors in the x and y directions were 1.30 and 1.33, respectively.

Abstract:We report on a fully fiber-integrated widely tunable optical parametric oscillator based on a photonic crystal fiber pumped by a picosecond ytterbium-doped fiber laser. The output wavelength of the oscillator can be continuously tuned from 898 to 1047 nm and from 1086 to 1277 nm, which is as wide as 340 nm. In particular, a larger Raman gain peak is simultaneously observed when the pump wavelength is far from the zero-dispersion wavelength in the normal-dispersion regime. The bandwidth of the output of the oscillator can be tuned by slightly adjusting the pump power.

Abstract:A flexible method of generating stable dual-wavelength laser pulses with tunable power ratio and pulse interval is proposed, through integrating a coaxially end-pumped laser with compound gain media and an intracavity pumped optical parametric oscillator (IOPO). A theoretical model was built by a set of time-domain coupling wave equations containing both the generation of two fundamental waves from a shared pump source and the conversion to signal waves through the parametric process. Simulations showed that by simply varying the pump focal position or pump wavelength, the gains in two laser crystals could be changed, leading to simultaneous change in average power ratio and time interval between two wavelengths. Experimental verifications were performed with combined laser crystals (Nd:YAG and a-cut Nd:YLF) and a nonlinear crystal (KTA), which enabled dual-wavelength signal output in the 1.5-1.6 μm eye-safe region and demonstrated coincident conclusions with theoretical results. As there was no gain competition between two fundamental waves, stable signal output was obtained. Moreover, various wavelength pairs in any wavelength ranges are possible by using different laser crystals and nonlinear crystals. It is believed that this is a promising method for generating simultaneous dual-wavelength laser pulses for applications in lidar, remote sensing, nonlinear frequency conversion, etc.
High‐power, Continuous‐wave Optical Parametric Oscillator Based on MgO:sPPLT Crystal

Abstract:A high power, high-conversion-efficiency, and tunable continuous-wave external cavity pump singly resonant optical parametric oscillator (OPO) was proposed in this article. This OPO was based on multi-grating MgO-doped stoichiometric periodically poled LiTaO3 (MgO:sPPLT) and pumped with 532 nm continuous wave fiber laser. The MgO:sPPLT-OPO could provide near-infrared radiation across 821-879 nm in the signal and 1352-1515 nm in the idler within four grating periods of 8.3-8.6 mu m. When the pump power was 5.4 W, the maximum pump-to-signal conversion efficiency could reach 57.5% at 821 nm. The output power extended to 5.9 W in each period when the pump power reaches 13.6 W.
