Abstract:The phase separation of diblock copolymers containing, some energetically neutral/biased nanoparticles is studied by means of large-scale dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. The effects of the volume fraction of nanoparticles, the size of nanoparticles, and the interaction strength between nanoparticles and blocks on the lamellar phase separation of diblock copolymers are investigated. When these effects are up to a critical value, the diblock copolymer nanocomposites can form a new bicontinuous morphology, which is well consistent with the experimental results. It is also found that the degree of order of phase separation for a given system increases slightly and then decreases abruptly until the bicontinuous morphology is formed as the volume fraction of nanoparticles increases. Furthermore, we discuss the microphase transition through the position distributions of nanoparticles and present a phase diagram in terms of the nanoparticle volume fraction, size, and surface interaction strength.

Abstract:Mixtures of cylindrical forming diblock copolymers (DBCPs) and mobile nanorods (NRs) are systematically investigated via dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. Final morphology of such composites depends not only on the characteristics of the copolymers, but also on the physical or chemical features of NRs, such as NR number, length, and surface adsorption (neutral, A and B attractive). A consideration of enthalpic and entropic interactions is necessary when physically or chemically distinct NRs are introduced into the copolymer/nanorod composites. For the short NRs, the phase behavior is similar to that of spherical nanoparticles (NPs). For the long NRs, the self-assembly of NRs can influence both the orientation and morphology of diblock/nanorod mixtures. If more NRs are incorporated, under stronger confinement from the host phase separated domains, the long NRs will aggregate and self-assemble into a certain spatial organization, inducing the morphological transitions of the composites from one phase to another. This behavior is not encountered for a similar system doped with spherical particles, emphasizing the role of particle shape in the interaction between doping particles and the host phase.

Abstract:The phase behaviours of diblock copolymers under cylindrical confinement are studied in two-dimensional space by using the self-consistent field theory. Several phase parameters are adjusted to investigate the cylindrical-confinement induced phase behaviours of diblock copolymers. A series of lamella-cylinder mixture phases, such as the mixture of broken-lamellae and cylinders and the mixture of square-lamellae and cylinders, are observed by varying the phase parameters, in which the behaviours of these mixture phases are discussed in the corresponding phase diagrams. Furthermore, the free energies of these mixture phases are investigated to illustrate their evolution processes. Our results are compared with the available observations from the experiments and simulations respectively, and they are in good agreement and provide an insight into the phase behaviours under cylindrical confinement

Abstract:The surface-induced phase transitions in dense nanoparticle arrays of lamella-forming diblock copolymers are investigated by using the real-space self-consistent field theory. The dense nanoparticle array provides a distinct and strong confinement environment where there are incomplete confinements in three spatial directions. Several complicated phases with cubic symmetries, such as the monocontinuous and bicontinuous phases, are identified in the dense nanoparticle arrays. Through adjusting the strength of surface preference, the disorder phases are induced into the complicated order phases in the nanoparticle arrays with small periods while the order–order transitions occurs in those with large periods. Investigations on the free and entropic energies indicate that these surface-induced phase transitions are of first-order and the stabilities of order phases are intimately correlated to the strength of surface preference. Our results enrich the knowledge about the phase behaviors of macromolecules in confined systems, which may be helpful to fabricate the novel nanomaterials based on the block copolymers.
Interplay of Liquid Crystalline Ordering in Double Side-Chain Liquid Crystalline Diblock Copolymer

Abstract:Rational design and successful synthesis of a novel double side-chain liquid crystalline (SCLC) diblock copolymer bearing a common flexible polyether backbone were achieved via sequential anionic polymerization. The distinct differences in transition temperatures as well as phase ranges of the constituting blocks counterparts merited the full exploration of complex phase structures of the diblock copolymer in a potential non-segregation state. It was clearly demonstrated that the presence of a comparably strong LC phase domain of one block could prohibit the formation of an LC phase of the adjacent block, despite that the size incommensurateness of phase structures across the interface is only similar to 0.3 nm. Moreover, it was observed that the existing LC phase could be disrupted with the evolution of the dominating LC phase domain of the neighboring block. Release of constraint from the dominating LC phase domain allowed the development of the originally suppressed LC phase. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We conducted a dissipative particle dynamics simulation to explore the self-assembly behaviours of side-chain liquid crystalline copolymers in solvents poor for comb blocks. Our results show that the copolymers are able to self-assemble into various aggregates such as micelles and vesicles, and especially into deformed structures such as rectangle cylinders. The morphology of the aggregates depends on the concentration of copolymers and a series of structural parameters such as the length of the coil blocks. Three kinds of morphology diagrams are mapped out to gain insight into the effect of these parameters on the self-assembly behaviours. Moreover, the aggregate structures such as the spatial arrangement of the rigid side chain are analysed, and it was found that the interfaces of the aggregates are greatly influenced by the packing of the side chains. We also investigated the influence of the rod-to-coil conformation transition of side chains on the self-assembly, motivated by stimuli-responsive polymer systems. A transformation from a disk-like structure to a vesicle was observed as the rod-to-coil conformation transition occurs. A comparison between the available experimental observations and the simulation results is made, and agreement is achieved.

Abstract:Block copolymers, known for their capacity to undergo microphase separation, spontaneously yield various periodic nanostructures. These precisely controlled nanostructures have attracted considerable interest due to their potential applications in microfabrication templates, conducting films, filter membranes, and other areas. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that microphase-separated structures typically exhibit random alignment, making alignment control a pivotal factor in functional material development. To address this challenge, researchers have explored the use of block copolymers containing liquid-crystalline (LC) polymers, which offer a promising technique for alignment control. The molecular structure and LC behavior of these polymers significantly impact the morphology and alignment of microphase-separated structures. In this study, we synthesized LC diblock copolymers with cyano-terminated phenyl benzoate moieties and evaluated the microphase-separated structures and molecular alignment behaviors. The LC diblock copolymers with a narrow molecular weight distribution were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization. Small angle X-ray scattering measurements revealed that the block copolymers exhibit smectic LC phases and form cylinder structures with a lattice period of about 18 nm by microphase separation. The examination of block copolymer films using polarized optical microscopy and polarized UV-visible absorption spectroscopy corroborated that the LC moieties were uniaxially aligned along the alignment treatment direction.
Phase Behaviour of X-Shaped Liquid Crystalline Molecules

Abstract:X-shaped liquid crystalline molecules (XLCMs) are obtained by tethering two flexible end A-blocks and two flexible side B-blocks to a rigid backbone (R). A rich array of ordered structures can be formed from XLCMs, driven by the competition between the interactions between the chemically distinct blocks and the molecular connectivity. Here, we report a theoretical study on the phase behaviour of XLCMs with symmetric and asymmetric side blocks by using the self-consistent field theory (SCFT). A large number of ordered structures, including stable smectic-A, triangle-square, pentagon and giant polygon, are obtained as solutions of the SCFT equations. Phase diagrams of XLCMs as a function of the total length and asymmetric ratio of the side chains are constructed. For XLCMs with symmetric side blocks, the theoretically predicted phase transition sequence is in good agreement with experiments. For XLCMs with a fixed total side chain length, transitions between layered structure to polygonal phases, as well as between different polygonal phases, could be induced by varying the asymmetry of the side chains. The free energy density, domain size, side-chain stretching , and molecular orientation are analyzed to elucidate mechanisms stabilizing the different ordered phases.

Interplay Between the Thermotropic Mesomorphic Behavior and the Microphase Separation in Dendron–liquid Crystalline Block Copolymers

Abstract:Novel dendron–liquid crystalline (dendron–LC) block copolymers integrating Percec type (alkoxy benzyl ether) dendron molecules and liquid crystalline polymer blocks were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (yields ca. 80%, molecular weights were in the range of 15 000–50 000). Poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PMPCS), of which the thermotropic mesomorphic behavior strongly relied on its molecular weight, was utilized as the liquid crystalline polymer block. Thermal property investigation of the copolymers revealed that only the glass transition temperature (111–119 � C) belonging to the PMPCS block was observed, indicating that the dendron molecule and the liquid crystalline polymer block were immiscible and the phase transition of the dendron molecule was restrained. The subtle interplay between the thermotropic mesomorphic behaviors of PMPCS and the microphase structure in these dendron–LC copolymers was discussed. With increasing molecular weight of the PMPCS block, a morphological evolution from bilayer to interdigitated lamellar structure was proposed based on the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) examination. More importantly, a less-ordered columnar nematic phase instead of a hexatic columnar nematic phase which should be stabilized in the PMPCS block was identified by in situ wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) experiments. The degradation of the hierarchical packing of PMPCS chain was attributed to the confinement effect originating from the interdigitated microphase structure.

Abstract:The crystallization behavior of crystalline-crystalline (CC) diblock copolymers has been shown to be dependent on the crystallization temperature and relative molecular size leach component The behavior of copolymers with similar crystallization temperatures is controlled by the block with the larger weight fraction and solvent-polymer interactions Using samples of poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly (epsilon-caprolacione) (PEO-b-PCL), dilute solution crystallization methods were investigated to determine their role in crystallization of CC copolymers A single crystal of one block, either PEO or PCL, (the first block), crystallized first with the second block segregated to the crystal basal surfaces For the first time, solvent quality and homopolymer seeds were in to manipulate crystallization of the block with the smaller weight fraction to crystallize first and form the lamellar single crystal In addition, subsequent crystallization of the tethered chains (the second block) on the surface was also observed, depending upon the molecular weight of the second block and crystallization conditions These crystallites formed by the second block exhibited preferred orientations on the crystal surface as observed by electron diffraction It is believed that this orientation was induced by "soft" epitaxy between the fold surfaces of the adjacent single crystals of the first block formed by the in crystallization.

Abstract:A series of liquid crystalline/crystalline block copolymers (BCPs) containing poly(methacrylate) block with liquid crystalline (LC) azobenzene moieties in the side chains (PMMAzo) and crystalline block poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) were prepared. The interplay of microphase separation, crystallization and LC ordering in these BCPs was investigated. It is revealed that microphase separation between two blocks is favorable to the LC ordering, which is attributed to the enhanced local concentration of LC moieties in PMMAzo microdomains. For a similar reason, crystallization of PLLA can intensify microphase separation thus facilitate LC ordering of PMMAzo. PLLA crystallization may also stabilize the LC structure, leading to phase transition temperatures of the BCPs higher than that of PMMAzo homopolymer. On the other hand, the LC ordering can conversely affect crystallization of PLLA. The crystallizability of PLLA is weakened by the chemically linked PMMAzo block. The special PLLA ε-crystals, which are usually formed in the presence of organic solvents, are unexpectedly observed under suitable conditions.

Abstract:In this study, side chain liquid crystalline (SCLC) fluorinated functionalities capable of controlling the orientation of the block copolymer (BCP) domains in thin film were successfully demonstrated. By introducing 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol onto a precursor polymer to obtain a novel BCP with a C8F17-containing LC side chain, BCP domains in 6.3-36.3 nm scale were obtained. For the studied symmetric SCLC diblock copolymers, a morphology transition from lamellae to cylinder was observed with reduced molecular weight (Mn). A co-existed 3.6 nm periodicity from lamellar smectic phase of SCLC was also verified in all synthesized BCPs of varied Mn by comprehensive characterizations of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) of the thin films revealed the formation of fingerprint patterns with increased correlation length when the domain spacing of the BCP is closer to the periodicity of the smectic structures, which are supported by the quantitative analysis on AFM images.
Phase Behavior Of Lyotropic Rigid-Chain Polymer Liquid Crystal Studied By Dissipative Particle Dynamics

Abstract:The phase behavior of lyotropic rigid-chain liquid crystal polymer was studied by dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) with variations of the solution concentration and temperature. A chain of fused DPD particles was used to represent each mesogenic polymer backbone surrounded with the strongly interacted solvent molecules. The free solvent molecules were modeled as independent DPD particles, where each particle includes a lump of solvent molecules with the volume roughly equal to the solvated polymer segment. The simulation shows that smectic-B (S-B), smectic-A (S-A), nematic (N), and isotropic (I) phases exist within certain regions in the temperature and concentration parameter space. The temperature-dependent S-B/S-A, S-A/N, and N/I phase transitions occur in the high concentration range. In the intermediate concentration range, the simulation shows coexistence of the anisotropic phases and isotropic phase, where the anisotropic phases can be the S-B, S-A, or N phases. Mole fraction and compositions of the coexisted phases are determined from the simulation, which indicates that concentration of rigid rods in isotropic phase increases as the temperature increases. By fitting the orientational distribution function of the systems, the biphasic coexistence is further confirmed. From the parameter alpha obtained for the simulation, the distribution of the rigid rods in the two coexistence phases is quantitatively evaluated. By using model and simulation methods developed in this work, the phase diagrams of the lyotropic rigid-chain polymer liquid crystal are obtained. Abstract:A dynamic Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is performed to investigate the phase behavior of mixtures of flexible polymers and low molecular weight thermotropic liquid crystals (LCs). The polymer is represented by three-dimensional self-avoiding lattice chains, while the LC is described by the Lebwohl-Lasher nematogen model. The initially homogeneous rod-coil mixture is, following a deep quench, separated into an isotropic phase rich in coils and a nematic phase rich in rods. The underlying spinodal decomposition (SD) process is then simulated and studied extensively. This is the first simulation of SD in a rod-coil mixture where the nematic ordering is included. Concentration fluctuations with a conserved order parameter are thus coupled with orientation fluctuations with a nonconserved order parameter. It is found that the early stage SD in the rod-coil mixture still exhibits the dominant spatial wavelength and that the scalar scattering functions in the late stage of SD obey the Furukawa scaling law. The kinetic difference between the so-called isotropic and anisotropic SD regions is, however, much less pronounced than predicted recently by the mean-field theory.

Abstract:A self-consistent mean-field theory (SCMFT) study on the phase behaviors of AB-diblock copolymer solutions is presented. All of the possible thermodynamically stable ordered structures verified by experiments are considered and the phase diagrams are generated. This work mainly focuses on the cases of selective solvents. The results show that a series of phase transitions Occurs upon dilution. In particular, large windows or lamellae + cylinder coexistence are located for the cases of highly asymmetric diblock copolymers in strongly selective solvents, which is in agreement with previous experimental observations, The transitions between the "inverted" fcc structure and the "inverted" bcc structure are also observed. The calculation indicates that the copolymer-solvent interaction plays important roles in these transitions.
Study on the Origin of Inverted Phase in Drying Solution-Cast Block Copolymer Films

Abstract:In a previous study, we reported observation of the novel inverted phase (the minority blocks comprising the continuum phase) in kinetically controlled phase separating solution-cast poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) (SBS) triblock copolymer films [Zhang et al. Macromolecules 2000, 33, 9561-7]. In this study, we adopt the same approach to investigate the formation of inverted phase in a series of solution-cast poly(styrene-b-butadiene) (SB) asymmetric diblock copolymers having nearly equal polystyrene (PS) weight fraction (about 30 wt %) but different molecular weights. The microstructure of the solution-cast block copolymer films resulting from different solvent evaporation rates, R, was inspected, from which the kinetically frozen-in phase structures at qualitatively different block copolymer concentrations and correspondingly different effective interaction parameter, chieff, can be deduced. Our result shows that there is a threshold molecular weight or range of molecular weight below which the unusual inverted phase is accessible by controlling the solvent evaporation rate. In comparing the present result with that of our previous study on the SBS triblock copolymer, we find that the formation of the inverted phase has little bearing on the chain architecture. We performed numerical calculations for the free energy of block copolymer cylinders and found that the normal phase is always preferred irrespective of the interaction parameter and molecular weight, which suggests the formation of the inverted phase to have a kinetic origin. A mechanism based on kinetic effects is proposed to account for the observed threshold in molecular weight.

Abstract:By using dynamical method based on the TDGL (time dependent Ginzburg-Landau) equation with the rebuilded Laplace-Beltrami operator in a spherical shell, the phase behaviors of linear AB diblock copolymer melt confined in the closed spherical shells have been studied. Our approach has focused on the effects of the shells radius and thickness on the morphology. By analyzing the microscopic phase patterns and the distribution of the components in the shells, we found that with the increasing of the radius and the thickness of the spherical shell, the confinement that polymer chains suffered was reduced and the macroscopic order of morphologies was gradually lost. Especially with the variation of shell thickness, the significant changes of component distribution of two asymmetric blocks within the shell were observed.

Abstract:A series of novel side-chain liquid crystalline (SCLC) copolymers were synthesized by attaching two distinct mesogenic units, namely a chiral cholesteryl-based monomer (M1) and an achiral biphenyl-based monomer (M2), to a poly(3-mercaptopropylmethylsiloxane) (PMMS) backbone via thiol-ene click chemistry. The influence of side chain composition on the self-assembly behavior and phase structures of these SCLC copolymers was systematically investigated using different instrument. Results indicate that three distinct liquid crystalline phases and four unique molecular configurations were identified within the polymer series, with the emergence of the liquid crystalline phase being a synergistic outcome of the two distinct side chains. This study underscores the critical influence of side chain dimensions, rigidity, and spatial volume on the self-assembly structures and phase characteristics of liquid crystalline polymers, providing valuable insights for the rational design and development of advanced functional materials with tailored properties.
Phase Behaviors of Side-Chain Liquid Crystalline Polyacetylenes with Different Length of Spacer: Where Will the Decoupling Effect Appear?

Abstract:Phase structures and transitions of a series of biphenyl containing side chain liquid crystalline polyacetylenes (SCLCPAS) with different length of spacer and alkyl tail, poly((m + 2)-{[(4'-alkyloxy-4-biphenylyl)carbonyl]oxy}-1-yne) [P-m,7 (m = 4, 5, 8), P-m,5 (m = 9), P-m,5(L) (m = 3, 9), m is the number of methylene units in the spacer], were studied by differential scanning calorimeter, polarized light microscopy, one- and two- 9 dimensional wide-angle X-ray diffraction. It is revealed that phase structures of the samples.-are strongly dependent on the lengths of spacer and alkyl tail. The samples with short spacer (m <= 4) render the molecular shape of sheet-like due to the strong coupling between the backbone and the biphenyl groups on side-chains. They from highly ordered smectic phase with an additional ordering on the subnanometer scale (SmX degrees) at low temperatures. For m > 5, P-m,7 exhibits the low-temperature phase of smectic B (SmB), While P-9,5 and 139,5(L) form smectic E (SmE). As the long spacers adopt more gauche conformations to satisfy the ordered packing of biphenyl groups, the coupling of main and side chain is relieved. Among the samples studied, P-5,7 is unique, which can retain the sheet-like shape but form the SmB, structure based on a fully interdigitated packing manner. Therefore, the spacer length of m = 5 sets the boundary between coupling and decoupling of the backbone and side-chains. Phase transition sequences of the SCLCPAs studied are also found to be influenced clearly by varying the spacer and tail lengths.
