Abstract:Crystallisation-driven self-assembly (CDSA) has become an extremely valuable technique in the preparation of well-defined nanostructures using diblock copolymers. The use of triblock copolymers is considerably less well-known on account of more complex syntheses and assembly methods despite the functional advantages provided by a third block. Herein, we show the simple preparation of well-defined tuneable 1D and 2D structures based on poly(lactide) triblock copolymers of different block ratios synthesised by ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerisation, where a phase diagram based on a novel unimer solubility approach is proposed. Using a series of poly(L-lactide)-b-poly(N, N-dimethylacrylamide) (PLLA-b-PDMA) diblock copolymers and PDMA-b-PLLA-b-PDMA triblock copolymers with different core/corona ratios, single solvent CDSA processes revealed that comparatively hydrophilic polymers were liable to achieve 2D platelets, while the less hydrophilic counterparts yield 'transition state' wide cylinders and pure 1D cylinders. The length of crystalline core block is also shown to play an important role in fixed corona/core ratio systems, where a longer core block is prone to form cylindrical structures due to a lack of overall solubility, whereas a shorter block forms platelets. Importantly, this approach reveals contrary results to conventional theories, which state that longer solvophilic blocks relative to the core-forming block should favour more curved core/corona interfaces. Our morphological transitions are shown in both di-and tri-block copolymer systems, showing the generalisation of these assembly methods towards promising methodologies for the rational design of PLLA-based nanocarriers in the biomedical realm.
Interplay of Microphase Separation, Crystallization and Liquid Crystalline Ordering in Crystalline/liquid Crystalline Block Copolymers

Abstract:A series of liquid crystalline/crystalline block copolymers (BCPs) containing poly(methacrylate) block with liquid crystalline (LC) azobenzene moieties in the side chains (PMMAzo) and crystalline block poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) were prepared. The interplay of microphase separation, crystallization and LC ordering in these BCPs was investigated. It is revealed that microphase separation between two blocks is favorable to the LC ordering, which is attributed to the enhanced local concentration of LC moieties in PMMAzo microdomains. For a similar reason, crystallization of PLLA can intensify microphase separation thus facilitate LC ordering of PMMAzo. PLLA crystallization may also stabilize the LC structure, leading to phase transition temperatures of the BCPs higher than that of PMMAzo homopolymer. On the other hand, the LC ordering can conversely affect crystallization of PLLA. The crystallizability of PLLA is weakened by the chemically linked PMMAzo block. The special PLLA ε-crystals, which are usually formed in the presence of organic solvents, are unexpectedly observed under suitable conditions.

Abstract:In this work, a series of diblock copolymers with a defined length of a soft poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) segment and different lengths of liquid crystalline (LC) poly[11-(4-cyano-4'-biphenoxy)undecyl methacrylate] (P11CBMA) segments were synthesized by using the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. Their microphase separation behavior and dielectric properties were carefully investigated. The well-defined diblock copolymers PDMSm-b-P11CBMA(n) possess three different soft/rigid ratios (m = 62, n = 15, 22, and 40) and narrow molecular distributions (PDI <= 1.25). Due to the supramolecular cooperative motion effect, the copolymers can form lamellar morphology (W-LC = 57.8%), predominant lamellar morphology with PDMS cylindrical defects (W-LC = 66.8%), and PDMS cylinders embedded in the LC matrix (W-LC = 78.3%) after annealing at 160 degrees C (above T-i) under N-2 for 24 h, respectively. The dielectric properties of the block copolymers were strongly influenced by the microphase separated morphologies and orientational directions of mesogens. Compared to homopolymer P11CBMA, PDMSm-b-P11CBMA(n) showed higher dielectric constants due to the confinement effect of microdomain dimensions. The dielectric constants of diblock copolymers could be further improved by aligning mesogens parallel to the electric field through substrate treatments. These findings will inspire researchers to design and develop novel LC block copolymers for dielectric elastomer actuator applications.

Abstract:In this study, side chain liquid crystalline (SCLC) fluorinated functionalities capable of controlling the orientation of the block copolymer (BCP) domains in thin film were successfully demonstrated. By introducing 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol onto a precursor polymer to obtain a novel BCP with a C8F17-containing LC side chain, BCP domains in 6.3-36.3 nm scale were obtained. For the studied symmetric SCLC diblock copolymers, a morphology transition from lamellae to cylinder was observed with reduced molecular weight (Mn). A co-existed 3.6 nm periodicity from lamellar smectic phase of SCLC was also verified in all synthesized BCPs of varied Mn by comprehensive characterizations of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) of the thin films revealed the formation of fingerprint patterns with increased correlation length when the domain spacing of the BCP is closer to the periodicity of the smectic structures, which are supported by the quantitative analysis on AFM images.

Abstract:Interaction between liquid-crystalline elastic deformation and microphase separation in liquid-crystalline block copolymers enables them to supramolecularly assemble into ordered nanostructures with high regularity. With the help of liquid-crystalline alignment, parallel and perpendicular patterning of nanostructures is fabricated with excellent reproducibility and mass production, which provides nanotemplates and nanofabrication processes for preparing varieties of nanomaterials. Furthermore, nanoscale microphase separation improves the optical performance of block-copolymer fi lms by eliminating the scattering of visible light, leading to advanced applications in optical devices and actuators. Recent progress in liquid-crystalline block copolymers, including their phase diagram, structure-property relationship, nanostructure control and nanotemplate applications, is reviewed.
Microphase Separation Facilitating and Stabilizing Hierarchical Segment Self-Assembly of Combined Main-Chain/Side-Chain Liquid Crystalline Polymer in Diblock Copolymer

Abstract:A series of diblock copolymers (PS-b-PBBHCSs) composed of polystyrene (PS) and poly(2,5-bis{[6-(4-butoxy-4'-oxybiphenyl)hexyl]oxycarbonyl}styrene) (PBBHCS) were successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization, with their chemical structures confirmed by various characterization techniques. While PS is a conventional coil polymer, PBBHCS is a novel combined main-chain/side-chain liquid crystalline polymer (MCSCLCP) which can exhibit hierarchically ordered structures. Small-angle X-ray scattering results show that the diblock copolymers with different compositions could present lamellar and rectangular cylinder morphologies before the order-disorder transition. Combining the differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering results, we find that the PBBHCS block in the confined space of microphase separation is still able to exhibit its liquid crystalline (LC) structures with the rectangular main-chain scaffold on the nanometer scale and the side-chain ordering on the subnanometer scale, which is the same as that of the homo-PBBHCS. Therefore, a three-length scale ordered hierarchical structure can be observed in the system we studied, namely, the microphase separation and the double-length scale LC structure of the MCSCLCP. The LC structure of PBBHCS is more stable in the diblock copolymer than that in the homopolymer with similar molecular weights. Therefore, not only PS-b-PBBHCS can fabricate more complex hierarchy structure but also the microphase separation can stabilize the hierarchical assembly of PBBHCS in the nanodomains.

Abstract:A series of liquid-crystalline (LC) diblock copolymers with an azobenzene moiety in the side chain were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Using a bromo-terminated poly(methyl methacrylate) as a macroinitiator, the obtained diblock copolymers showed well-defined structures and narrow molecular-weight distributions. Microphase-separated nanostructures with mesogenic blocks in either continuous or separated phases were observed. Owing to varied content of mesogens in the block copolymers, they showed different behavior of photoinduced alignment and holographic recording. Block copolymers with azobenzenes in the majority phases exhibited a similar performance of photoinduced alignment and refractive-index modulation to the azobenzene-containing homopolymer, but their photoinduced mass transportation was partly suppressed by the microphase separation, leading to a lower surface relief than that of the homopolymer. The photoinduced mass transfer was greatly prohibited in the block copolymers with mesogenic groups in the minority phases, resulting in little surface relief. However, refractive-index gratings were still recorded upon local alignment, driven by the photoinduced alignment of azobenzenes or the phototriggered molecular cooperative motion between azobenzenes and nonphotosensitive cyanobiphenyl groups. Then the possible schematic illustrations of mesogens and microphase separation in the grating structures were proposed.
Fabrication of Stable Nanocylinder Arrays in Highly Birefringent Films of an Amphiphilic Liquid-Crystalline Diblock Copolymer.

Abstract:An amphiphilic liquid-crystalline diblock copolymer (LCDC) with a highly birefringent cyanobiphenyl (CB) group as a mesogen was prepared by atom-transfer radical polymerization. The obtained LCDC showed a well-defined structure and a narrow molecular-weight distribution. In its spin-coated films, both liquid-crystalline (LC) alignment and microphase-separated nanostructures were systematically studied. Random LC arrangement and ambiguous microphase separation were observed in as-prepared films because of the high viscosity at room temperature. Upon annealing of the films in an isotropic phase of the LCDC, the CB mesogens self-organized into a smectic texture of a conic fan and the microphase separation proceeded completely. It is the supramolecular cooperative motion that enables the LCDC to hierarchically assemble into a regular patterning of normally aligned nanocylinders to the substrate, dispersed in the out-of-plane-oriented mesogens. With the help of homogeneous alignment of the CB groups induced by a rubbing technique, uniform patterning of highly ordered nanocylinders parallel to the rubbing direction was successfully fabricated in the plane. The fabricated perpendicular and parallel patterning of nanocylinders dispersed in the highly birefringent films with the CB block as the majority phase show good stability under room light, indicating their potential applications as nanotemplates for preparing advanced nanoscaled materials.

Abstract:A novel double liquid crystalline (LC) block copolymer (BCP) composed of poly[omega-(4'-methoxybiphenyl-4-yloxy)hexyl methacrylate] (PMBHMA) and poly{2,5-bis[(4-meth-oxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PMPCS) was designed and successfully synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Whereas PMBHMA is a conventional side-chain LC (SCLC) polymer, PMPCS is a typical mesogen-jacketed I,C polymer, which can serve as rod after it forms columnar LC (Phi) phase. Therefore, the PMBHMA-b-PMPCS is an SCLC-rod BCP. The phase structures and transitions of the PMBHMA-b-PMPCS synthesized with a PMPCS volume fraction of similar to 49% were investigated using various techniques including thermal analysis and X-ray scattering and diffraction methods. A microphase-separated lamellar morphology was identified for this SCLC-rod sample. The Phi phase of the PMPCS block with the rod direction perpendicular to the interface remained unchanged and impacted the LC transitions of PMBHMA blocks greatly. We found that the smectic A phase of the PMBHMA disappeared, and meanwhile, its nematic phase got stabilized over a wide temperature range. At low temperatures, small smectic E domains with homogeneous orientation formed in the PMBHMA block domains. Our work demonstrates that the confinement imposed by the rod block and dimension commensurability of the ordered structures are indeed crucial for SCLC-rod BCPs.

Abstract:Block copolymers composed of cinnamate or biphenyl liquid crystal and fluorinated side chain blocks were synthesized by RAFT polymerization. The BCPs showed sharp phase separation benefit from the chemistry incompatibility of the fluorinated and the liquid crystal blocks. Both cinnamate and cyano-biphenyl liquid crystal containing BCPs formed highly ordered nanostructures with domain-spacing ranged from 15.6 nm to 12.4 nm. UV exposure could alter the cinnamate containing domain morphology via partially dimerization.

Abstract:Using a bromo-terminated poly(ethylene oxide) as a macroinitiator, an amphiphilic liquid–crystalline (LC) diblock copolymer with an azobenzene moiety as a nematic mesogen was prepared by an atom transfer radical polymerization process. In thin films of the well-defined diblock copolymer with the mesogenic block as a continuous phase upon microphase separation, the influence of supramolecular cooperative motion on the microphase-separated nanocylinders was systematically studied. Although the major phase of the hydrophobic nematic LC block showed only one-dimensional order, it could endow the separated minor phase of the hydrophilic PEO nanocylinders with three-dimensionally ordered structures. Both out-of-plane perpendicular and in-plane parallel patternings of the regularly ordered nanocylinder arrays were successfully fabricated on macroscopic scales by thermal annealing and photoalignment, respectively. The microphase-separated nanostructures with high regularity showed excellent reproducibility and mass production, which might guarantee nanotemplated fabrication processes and would lead to novel industrial applications in macromolecular engineering.

Abstract:Liquid crystalline diblock copolymers with different molecular weights and low poly-dispersities were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene (MPCS) monomers. The block architecture (coil-conformation of MMA segment and rigid-rod of MPCS segment) of the copolymer was experimentally confirmed by a combination of H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatograph techniques. The liquid crystalline behaviour of the copolymer was studied using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscope. It was found that the liquid crystalline behaviour was dependent on the number average molecular weight of the rigid segment. Only those copolymers with M-n(GPC) of the rigid block above 9200 g mol(-1) could form liquid crystalline phases higher than the glass transition temperature of the rigid block. The random copolymers MPCS-co-MMA were also synthesized by conventional free radical polymerization. The molar content of MPCS in MPCS-co-MMA had to be higher than 71% to maintain liquid crystalline behaviour. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.
Interplay Between the Thermotropic Mesomorphic Behavior and the Microphase Separation in Dendron–liquid Crystalline Block Copolymers

Abstract:Novel dendron–liquid crystalline (dendron–LC) block copolymers integrating Percec type (alkoxy benzyl ether) dendron molecules and liquid crystalline polymer blocks were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (yields ca. 80%, molecular weights were in the range of 15 000–50 000). Poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PMPCS), of which the thermotropic mesomorphic behavior strongly relied on its molecular weight, was utilized as the liquid crystalline polymer block. Thermal property investigation of the copolymers revealed that only the glass transition temperature (111–119 � C) belonging to the PMPCS block was observed, indicating that the dendron molecule and the liquid crystalline polymer block were immiscible and the phase transition of the dendron molecule was restrained. The subtle interplay between the thermotropic mesomorphic behaviors of PMPCS and the microphase structure in these dendron–LC copolymers was discussed. With increasing molecular weight of the PMPCS block, a morphological evolution from bilayer to interdigitated lamellar structure was proposed based on the small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) examination. More importantly, a less-ordered columnar nematic phase instead of a hexatic columnar nematic phase which should be stabilized in the PMPCS block was identified by in situ wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) experiments. The degradation of the hierarchical packing of PMPCS chain was attributed to the confinement effect originating from the interdigitated microphase structure.
Persistent Formation of Self-Assembled Cylindrical Structure in a Liquid Crystalline Block Copolymer Constructed by Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract:A series of supramolecular liquid crystalline block copolymers (SLCBCPs) were prepared by hydrogen-bonding interaction between poly(dimethylsiloxane)-b-poly(2-vinyl-terephthalic acid) (PDMS-b-PM1H) and [4-(4'-hexyloxy)styryl]-pyridine (NC6). PDMS-b-PM1H serves as the hydrogen-bonding donor and NC6 as the hydrogen-bonding acceptor. The SLCBCPs are obtained by mixing the hydrogen-bonding acceptor and donor in pyridine. Through increasing the molar ratio of pyridine to carboxyl, the SLCBCPs can transform from coil-coil block copolymers (BCPs) to rod-coil ones. When the ratio of pyridine to carboxylic acid is 0.50 or lower, the SLCBCPs are coil-coil-like. However, when the ratio exceeds 0.50, the SLCBCPs behave like rod-coil BCPs because the supramolecular block PM1H(NC6) exhibits liquid crystalline (LC) behavior owing to the "jacketing" effect. Small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy experiments were employed to characterize the microphase-separated nanostructures of the SLCBCPs. Interestingly, when the weight fraction of the supramolecular block PM1H(NC6) ranges from 51% to 92%, hexagonally packed cylinders (HEX) are always obtained. Compared to conventional BCPs, the SLCBCPs prepared can more easily self-assemble into the HEX nano-structures that may potentially serve as nano templates and porous materials after selective etching. In addition, the SLCBCPs can form hierarchically ordered nano structures, including the HEX nano-structure of the SLCBCP and the LC phase of the supramolecular block.

Abstract:A facile approach to block copolymer (BCP) domain orientation control in thin films has been demonstrated by employing a BCP with liquid crystalline semifluorinated side chains by tuning the composition of the copolymers of the bottom surface layer (BSL). 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecanethiol was attached to a precursor polymer, polystyrene-block-poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PGMA), to obtain a novel BCP with a C8F17-containing liquid crystal (LC) side chain (PS-b-P8FMA). Anisotropic hexagonally packed cylinder domains in a bulk state were first characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The observed morphology transition of BCPs with different fluorinated side chain lengths of –CF3, –C4F9, and –C6F13 suggested the decisive effects of LC side chain ordering on the anisotropic nanostructures. In the thin film study, poly(methyl methacrylate-random-2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate-random-methacrylic acid) (PMMA-ran-PTFEMA-ran-PMAA) solution was used as BSLs for tuning the desired periodicities. The surface free energy (SFE) of BSL was simply tailored by changing the composition of comonomers. In atomic force microscopy (AFM) characterization, long-range ordered perpendicularly oriented BCP domains in a hexagonally packed array or parallel oriented BCP domains as striation patterns were easily fabricated on non-preferential or preferential BSL, respectively. The study presents a novel approach to tunable thin film periodicities without changing or modifying BCPs, which is desired in next-generation BCP lithography.

Abstract:In this work, self-assembly method was used to improve the dielectric constant of triblock copolymers. A series of ABA triblock copolymers with a defined length of poly(n-butyl acrylate) (PBA, B block) segment and different lengths of liquid crystalline (LC) poly[11-(4-cyano-4'-biphenoxy)undecyl methacrylate] (P11CBMA, A block) segments were synthesized by using the atom transfer radical polymerization method. The well-defined triblock copolymers P11CBMA(m)-b-PBA(n)-b-P11CBMA(m) possess three different B/A ratios (n = 50, m = 17, 43, 53). Due to the supramolecular cooperative motion effect, the copolymers can form worm-like microstructure (W-LC = 52.8%), cylinder-like nanostructure with P11CBMA phase embedded in PBA matrix (W-LC = 73.9%), and wide stripe structure with LC domains distributed unevenly in a continuous PBA matrix (W-LC = 77.7%) after annealed at 160 degrees C (above T-i) under N-2 for 24 h, respectively. In order to study the influence of microphase separated morphology of triblock copolymer on the dielectric properties, solvent annealing was also used to develop various nanostructures. After thermal or solvent annealing, the dielectric constants of block copolymers increased dramatically while their loss factors remained the same. For different block copolymers, the dielectric constants increased with the increase of the LC block length. For diverse treatments, dielectric permittivities of samples varied widely with different nanostructures. The results show that the dielectric constants of block copolymers could be tuned by the block ratios and the self-assembled microstructures. Synthesis, Self-Assembly, and Drug-Release Properties of New Amphipathic Liquid Crystal Polycarbonates

Abstract:New amphiphilic liquid crystal (LC) polycarbonate block copolymers containing side-chain cholesteryl units were synthesized. Their structure, thermal stability, and LC phase behavior were characterized with Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum, ¹H NMR, gel permeation chromatographic (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscope (POM), and XRD methods. The results demonstrated that the LC copolymers showed a double molecular arrangement of a smectic A phase at room temperature. With the elevating of LC unit content in such LC copolymers, the corresponding properties including decomposition temperature (Td), glass temperature (Tg), and isotropic temperature (Ti) increased. The LC copolymers showed pH-responsive self-assembly behavior under the weakly acidic condition, and with more side-chain LC units, the self-assembly process was faster, and the formed particle size was smaller. It indicated that the self-assembly driving force was derived from the orientational ability of LC. The particle size and morphologies of self-assembled microspheres loaded with doxorubicin (DOX), together with drug release tracking, were evaluated by dynamic light scattering (DLS), SEM, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The results showed that DOX could be quickly released in a weakly acidic environment due to the pH response of the self-assembled microspheres. This would offer a new strategy for drug delivery in clinic applications.

Abstract:We have designed and synthesized rod-coil-rod triblock copolymers of controlled molecular weight by two-step nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization, where the rod part consists of "mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer" (MJLCP). The MJLCP segment examined in our studies is poly(2,5-bis[(4-methoxy-phenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene) (MPCS) while the coil part is polyisoprene (PI). Characterization of the triblock copolymers by GPC, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopies, TGA, DSC confirmed that the triblock copolymers were comprised of microphase-separated low T-g amorphous PI and high T-g PMPCS blocks. Analysis of POM and 1D, 2D-WAXD demonstrated that the triblock copolymers formed nematic liquid crystal phase. Morphological studies using TEM indicated the sample formed lamellar structure. Abstract:Helical topological structures are often found in chiral biological systems, but seldom in synthesized polymers. Now, controllable microphase separation of amphiphilic liquid-crystalline block copolymers (LCBCs) consisting of hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) and hydrophobic azobenzene-containing poly(methylacrylate) is combined with chirality transfer to fabricate helical nanostructures by doping with chiral additives (enantiopure tartaric acid). Through hydrogen-bonding interactions, chirality is transferred from the dopant to the aggregation, which directs the hierarchical self-assembly in the composite system. Upon optimized annealing condition, helical structures in film are fabricated by the induced aggregation chirality. The photoresponsive azobenzene mesogens in the LCBC assist photoregulation of the self-assembled helical morphologies. This allows the construction and non-contact manipulation of complicated nanostructures.

Abstract:The microphase-separated nanostructures of block copolymers are ideal nanotemplates for advanced fabrication, but they are greatly limited by the rapid and precise manipulation especially at room temperature. Here we report one method of light-directed regulation of nanostructures in thin films of liquid-crystalline diblock copolymers containing azobenzene units as photoresponsive mesogens. The in-plane orientated nanocylinders in thin film can be light-directed into out-of-plane on a time scale of seconds at room temperature. This fast regulation is beneficial from the fast process of photoinduced phase transition of the mesogenic block from liquid crystal to disordered isotropic phase. Several influence factors like the molecular weight of polymer, film thickness, light intensity, and relative humidity were studied in the light directed processes. In addition, the photoregulated nanostructures demonstrate their capability of being photopatterned and further used as nanotemplates for fabrication of nanoparticles. The light-directed method shows noncontact, precise, and reversible features, enabling it to find further applications in fast control of nanostructures for nanofabrication and nanoengineering.
