Abstract:Numerical coarsening is an approach that constructs coarsened shape (or basis) functions for simulating heterogeneous structures on a coarse mesh, and seeks the fine mesh solution on a finite dimensional space spanned by these shape functions. It avoids the challenging issue of conforming meshing, reduces computational costs while maintaining high simulation accuracy, and has huge potential in the simulation of composites or even complex CAD models in fictitious domain methods. The C1-continuity of the coarsened shape functions is of vital importance in determining the simulation quality, such as the continuity of stress solution, but till now has not been developed. In addressing the issue, the study proposes to construct coarsened shape functions using B-spline patches (piecewise surfaces in 2D or volumes in 3D). By carefully devising an intermediate interpolation patch that covers the coarse element boundaries, important properties of C1-continuity and partition of unity are achieved, being able to produce high simulation stability and accuracy. By being explicitly formulated as two sequent displacement mappings from coarse nodes to the boundary fine nodes and then to the interior fine nodes, the shape functions are cheaply derived with small efforts in solving a small-size linear system for each coarse element. Performance of the coarsened shape functions, implemented within the material point method (MPM), is demonstrated through various numerical examples in comparisons with benchmark results in terms of stability, simulation accuracy, and computational efficiency.

Abstract:The stability of shear-deformable plates under constant initial stresses is studied by the spline finite strip method. Third-order plate theory is used as the basis for developing the strip element. The classical B3-spline function is modified in such a way that the resulting spline finite strip element incorporates the merits of spline interpolation and the versatility of the finite element method. A set of demonstration analyses are presented to show the validity of the modified spline finite strip method.

Abstract:In this paper, the original spline finite strip, which is based upon the thin plate theory, is modified and generalized in the sense that the formulation is based upon a third-order plate theory and is applicable to thin plates and shear-deformable plates (e.g. thick isotropic plates and laminated composite plates). To extend its application to nonlinear analysis, displacement formulation is employed with geometric nonlinearity and small initial imperfection taken into account. To demonstrate the performance of the present finite strip in the analysis of plates, a number of numerical examples are given.

Abstract:A spline finite strip is proposed to analyse thick isotropic or laminated composite plates. The formulation is based upon the principle of virtual work and the third-order plate theory developed by Reddy. The variational functional requires the satisfaction of C1-continuity of the assumed vertical deflection variable which can be easily fulfilled by the present method. The proposed spline finite strip is a conforming element with a smaller number of unknowns at each node compared to other existing elements based on the third-order theory. For the analysis of thin isotropic or laminated plates, the present element shows no sign of shear locking. A number of computational examples are given to demonstrate the efficiency and the accuracy of the present method.

Abstract:Based on the linear superposition of the quadrilateral isoparametric membrane element and quadrilateral Mindlin plate element, basic vector formulas for the quadrilateral isoparametric shell element with the shear deformation is derived. Two different coordinate modes for updating the particle displacement and the element node internal force are put forward. The uniform numerical solution for an irregular quadrilateral element is realized by the isoparametric integral scheme along the element plane. Then, the bilinear elastoplastic constitutive of material is introduced into the vector finite shell element, and the nonlinear effect of the material is realized based on the integral method along the thickness. On this basis, the nonlinear calculation and analysis program of the quadrilateral isoparametric shell element is developed. Numerical example results show that the static and dynamic analysis, large deformation and large rotation analysis, and buckling analysis can all be well performed for the shell structures by the developed program, which verifies the validity of theoretical derivation and computer program.

Abstract:Classical plate and shell finite elements are derived from corresponding theories of plate and shell, and the theories of plate and shell are based on spatial theory of elasticity and plate-shell assumptions. In this paper, the fundamental plate and shell assumptions are directly introduced into the 20-node spatial isoparametric finite element. By modifying the elastic matrix of the spatial isoparametric finite element, one new plate element suitable for analysis of thick and thin plates and shells 20-node degenerated solid plate element, is developed. The degenerated solid plate element is used in static analysis of one open cylindrical thin shell and the natural vibration analysis of thick and thin plates. Numerical results show that the degenerated solid plate element has the advantages of good convergence, stability and higher precision. Moreover, the element can also be used to analyze the vibration of curved plates with variable thickness, laminated plates and shells.

Abstract:A spline element which can be widely used in the analysis of tall building structures is proposed. In the interpolation scheme of the element, the orders of spline functions in both horizontal and vertical directions are properly chosen so that the computational work may be effectively reduced. In comparison with the conventional finite strip method, the spline element presented in this paper can analyse tall buildings with irregular openings as well as arbitrary configurations. The numerical examples show that the spline element can analyse tall buildings with irregular openings as well as with arbitrary configurations. The numerical examples show that the spline element possess very good static and dynamic behaviour, and that satisfactory results can be obtained with only a few elements.

Abstract:This paper concerns the shell element formulation used for linear analysis. Introduction of hierarchical incompatible modes into the ordinary 8-node solid element is very effective to obtain the rational deflection-rotation relationship. An efficient revision scheme without using numerical volume integration is developed to ensure the satisfaction of the patch test. A lot of numerical tests are carried out for the validation of the present element. Numerical results show that the element can give satisfactory accuracy and convergence, especially for moderately thick shells. Copyright (C) 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:A new simple 3-node triangular flat-shell element with standard nodal DOF (6 DOF per node) is proposed for the linear and geometrically nonlinear analysis of very thin to thick plate and shell structures. The formulation of element GT9 (Long and Xu 1994), a generalized conforming membrane element with rigid rotational freedoms, is employed as the membrane component of the new shell element. Both one-point reduced integration scheme and a corresponding stabilization matrix are adopted for avoiding membrane locking and hourglass phenomenon. The bending component of the new element comes from a new generalized conforming Kirchhoff-Mindlin plate element TSL-T9, which is derived in this paper based on semiLoof constrains and rational shear interpolation. Thus the convergence can be guaranteed and no shear locking will happen. Furthermore, a simple hybrid procedure is suggested to improve the stress solutions, and the Updated Lagrangian formulae are also established for the geometrically nonlinear problems. Numerical results with solutions, which are solved by some other recent element models and the models in the commercial finite element software ABAQUS, are presented. They show that the proposed element, denoted as GMST18, exhibits excellent and better performance for the analysis of thin-think plates and shells in both linear and geometrically nonlinear problems.

Abstract:Currently the most sophisticated and the near future accurate method of a numerical buckling strength verification is a geometrically and materially nonlinear analysis with structure imperfections included. In this paper, a nonlinear spline finite element method ( n-spline FEM) is adopted in Strip Transverse and Lengthways Buckling with clamped, simply and free supported boundary conditions. The pseudo-arelength method is adopted in the n-spline FEM which thus can be used to trace the equilibrium path, monitor and pinpoint singular (critical) points, extract buckling modes and branch-switching by eigenvalue analysis and incremental-iterative approach. N-spline FEM is an efficient numerical method, and it has several advantages, such as strong continuity, high precision and less unknown parameters, etc. N-spline FEM is simpler and more convenient than FEM for strip because the strip can be treated as rectangular plate. In the end of the paper, numerical results for the post-buckling behaviour of strip are presented.
Free Vibration Analysis of Double Curvature Thin Walled Structures by a B-Spline Finite Element Approach

Abstract:This paper presents a free vibration analysis of general double curvature shell structures using B-spline shape functions and a refinement technique. The shell formulation is developed following the well known Ahmad degenerate approach including the effect of the shear deformation. The formulation is not isoparametric, as a consequence the assumed displacement field is described through non-uniform B-spline functions of any degree. A solution refinement technique is considered by means of a high continuity p-method approach. The eigensolution of a plate, and of single and double curvature shells are obtained by numerical simulation to test the performance of the approach. Solutions are compared with other available analytical and numerical solutions, and discussion follows.

Abstract:This chapter discusses the theory of nonlinear finite element analysis. A variety of situations exist, in which a structure may be subjected to large dynamic loads, which can cause permanent deformation or damage to the structure. Therefore, structural dynamics and impact mechanics have an important role in the engineering design. This chapter presents a simple and efficient procedure for large displacement plastic analysis of beam-column elements. The objective of this chapter is to present a theoretical formulation for the modeling of strain-rate hardening effects, and shows how these effects can be implemented into three-dimensional finite beam-column elements. The finite beam-column element is ideally suited for the impact analysis of flames with large displacements, strain hardening, and strain-rate hardening. The accuracy and efficiency of the element are examined by comparing the present results with those obtained from experiments by others, rigid-plastic analyses, and from existing finite element analysis results. This appendix is written based on a Japanese book authored by Yagawa and Miyazaki. When the formulation presented in this chapter was made, the author had been inspired by this book and Yamada's. The objective of this appendix is to describe the basics of plasticity that may be useful to understand the mathematical formulation presented in the main body of this chapter. The isotropic hardening rule and the kinematic hardening rule are also described.
New p-version plate elements and applications in structural vibration analyses

Abstract:Using Legendre orthogonal polynomials as shape functions,two versatile p-version plate elements are developed.The element matrices are integrated analytically to guarantee the accuracy and monotonic convergence of the predicted solutions of the proposed p-version elements.The analysis results show that the convergence rate of the present elements is very fast with respect to the increasing number of additional polynomial terms in shape functions,and their solutions are much more accurate than those of the linear finite elements for the same number of degrees of freedom.Additionally,the new elements without the reduced integration can be applied for the free vibration analyses of thin plates over the conventional h-version ones.Due to the fast convergence of the proposed p-version elements,the structural damage is simulated to study its time-frequency characteristic.Good agreement between the simulated and the experimental results verifies the present p-version finite elements for the structural vibration analyses.

Abstract:This paper aims at introducing a new geometric nonlinear spline finite element method(spline FEM) according to the principles of spline functions.The integral among two or three B-spline functions can be expressed in evidence by the integral characteristics of spline functions,thusly the element stiffness matrix can be obtained more easily than using the traditional FEM whose computing process is complicated and time-consuming.And it retains advantages of high-precision,small inputs,and strong continuity.In contrast to traditional FEM which employs the Gauss quadrature to gain results on Gauss points,the variables are gained on nodal points in the new spline FEM.This is convenient and accurate in the pre-and post-processing.

Abstract:This paper presents a free vibration analysis of double curvature free form shaped shell structures using the B-spline shape functions approximation method. It is based on the Ritz method. The shell formulation is developed following the well known Ahmad degenerate approach including the effect of shear deformation. The assumed displacement field is described through non-uniform B-spline functions of any degree. The effect of locking is investigated and both reduced and modified quadrature integration rules are considered with the purpose of increasing the solution accuracy and diminishing the computational cost. Numerical simulation is reported for the evaluation of the eigensolution of plates, and of single and double curvature shells to test the effectiveness and the efficiency of the approach. The presence of spurious zero energy modes both at local and global level was investigated. The solutions are compared with other available analytical and numerical solutions, and discussed in detail.

Abstract:Presented herein is a spline finite member element method which adopts transformed B3 spline function to simulate the warping displacements and uses finite member elements for vibration analysis of the thin-walled curved beams. The general solution of displacements of static analysis is used in this method to replace the possible displacements in vibration, and the stiffness matrix is developed by using Hamiltonian variational principle, then the natural frequencies and corresponding vibration modes are obtained. In order to illustrate the accuracy and practical usefulness of this method, numerical solutions by this study are presented and compared with solutions by ANSYS. The presented method is simple in preprocess, convergent and sufficiently accurate.

Abstract:To simulate sheet metal forming processes precisely, an in-house dynamic explicit code was developed to apply a new solid-shell element to sheet metal forming analyses, with a corotational coordinate system utilized to simplify the nonlinearity and to integrate the element with anisotropic constitutive laws. The enhancing parameter of the solid-shell element, implemented to circumvent the volumetric and thickness locking phenomena, was condensed into an explicit form. To avoid the rank deficiency, a modified physical stabilization involving the B-bar method and reconstruction of transverse shear components was adopted. For computational efficiency of the solid-shell element in numerical applications, an adaptive mesh subdivision scheme was developed, with element geometry and contact condition taken as subdivision criteria. To accurately capture the anisotropic behavior of sheet metals, material models with three different anisotropic yield functions were incorporated. Several numerical examples were carried out to validate the accuracy of the proposed element and the efficiency of the adaptive mesh subdivision.
