Abstract:25,27-Diisopropoxy-26,28-dihydroxy-calix[4]arene(2) was synthesized by dialkylation of 25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxy-calix[4]arene(1) and 2-iodopropane(i-PrI) using K2CO3 as the catalyst in MeCN.The structure was confirmed by 1H NMR and MS.The optimum reaction conditions were as followed: 1 was 23.8 mmol;n(1) ∶n(K2CO3) ∶n(i-PrI) ∶n(MeCN) was 1.0 ∶1.1 ∶3.3 ∶84.0;ionization time was 1.5 h at 84 ℃;reflux reaction time was 24 h.The yield of 2 was 84.13% with purity of 95%.

Abstract:The mixture of p-（methoxy）calix[n]arenes（n = 6, 7 or 8） was prepared in one step from p-methoxyphenol under basic conditions, and their fully methylated derivatives p-（dimethyloxy）calix[n]arenes（n = 6,7 or 8） were also prepared and purified by column chromatography to indentify their structures. In this process, the single crystal of p-（dimethyloxy）calix[7]arene was obtained and its structure was confirmed. The proportion of p-（methoxy）calix[6]-, [7]-and [8]-arenes in the mixture obtained from the reaction was investigated under different reaction conditions, and p-（methoxy）calix[6]-and [8]-arenes could be separated from the mixture by solvent extraction. In addition, the host-guest interaction of p-（dimethyloxy）calix[6]arene with methyl-4,4-bipyridinium hexafluorophosphate in organic solvents was investigated.

Abstract:A series of novel calix[4]arenes containing acetal, amid and cyano group respectively have been prepared by the O - alkylation. In reactions of O - alkylation, mono,1,3 - di and tetra ethers can be obtained respectively as main products by changing reaction conditions. The regio - selectivity depends greatly on the type of bases used and the reaction time.

Abstract:Seven OH-free and O-permethylated monofunctionalized calix[5]arenes carrying either additional methyl or tert-butyl groups are prepared following fragment condensation protocols. This strategy proves to be superior to previous approaches. Calix[5]arenes with free OH groups all adopt a cone conformation stabilized by a seam of hydrogen bonds at the lower rim. Post-condensation modifications, i.e., methylation of phenolic OH groups or functional group interconversions can also be achieved. Bulky tert-butyl groups are also found to stabilize the cone conformations of O-methylated compounds. These compounds offer versatile functional groups that make these concave molecules interesting building blocks for the synthesis of more sophisticated molecular architectures.

Abstract:A new compound, 25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-di(hydroxyethoxy) calix[4] arene, was obtained by the reaction of calix[4]arene with iodoethanol. Its structure was characterized by IR, UV, MS, H-1 NMR and (13) C NMR spectra. The coordination behavior of the product with 4 kinds of rare earth metal( II ) nitrates in acetonitrile was studied by using fluorescence spectrometry. The stability constants (1gKs) of the complexes of the product with rare earth metal( II ) nitrates and the Gibbs free energy change(-DeltaGdegrees) of the coordination reactions were calculated according to the modified Hilderbrand-Benesi equation. The results indicated that the coordination ability of the product with rare earth metal( II ) nitrates were stronger.

Abstract:A Sonogashira coupling of meta-iodocalix[4]arene with various terminal acetylenes confirmed that the meta position of calixarene is well addressable, and that both thermal and microwave protocols led to good yields of alkynylcalixarenes. Alkynes thus obtained were subjected to the ferric chloride and diphenyl diselenide-promoted electrophilic closure. It turns out that the calix[4]arenes give completely different bridging products than those described for the non-macrocyclic starting compounds. This can be demonstrated not only by the isolation of products with a six-membered ring (6-exo-dig), but mainly by the smooth formation of the 5-endo-dig cyclization, which has never been observed in the aliphatic series. An attempt at electrocyclization led to a high yield of the 1,2-diketone (oxidation of the starting alkyne), again in contrast to the reaction described for the acyclic derivatives. The structures of the unexpected products were unequivocally established by X-ray analysis and clearly demonstrate how the preorganized macrocyclic skeleton favors a completely different regioselectivity of cyclization reactions compared to common aliphatic compounds.

Abstract:We report herein an efficient approach for the enantioselective synthesis of inherently chiral calix[4]arenes via palladium-catalyzed asymmetric intramolecular C-H arylations. Using a chiral bifunctional phosphine-carboxylate ligand, the inherent chirality on macrocyclic scaffolds was induced successfully, from which a wide range of calix[4]arenes with fluorenone motifs were obtained with good yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee). The synthetic utility of this method was demonstrated by diverse transformations of the products, thus substantially expanding the chemical space of chiral calix[4]arenes. Further investigations of photophysical and chiroptical properties revealed that calix[4]arenes bearing two fluorenone moieties displayed remarkable glum values (up to 0.019), highlighting the great potential of inherent chirality in the development of organic optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:Chloromethylation of 5,17-di-tert-butyl-25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-dimethoxycalix[4]arene with chloromethyl methyl ether in the presence of zinc chloride led to the formation of macrocyclic and linear oligomers containing three to five calix[4]arenes bridged via methylenes at the upper rims. Under the identical conditions, however, 5,17-di-tert-amyl-25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-dimethoxycalix[4]arene was converted into a mixture of linear dimer and trimer in yields of 39.5 and 34%, respectively. Only dimer was obtained as the sole product in 41% yield when 25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-diethoxycalix[4]arene was used. Efficient synthesis of linear or starlike polycalixarenes was achieved utilizing the Friedel–Crafts reaction of debutylated or partially debutylated calix[4]arenes with chloromethylated calix[4]arene promoted by anhydrous zinc chloride.

Abstract:25,25',27,27'-Bis(1, 3-dioxypropane)-bis(5,11,17,23-tetra-tert-butylcalix[4] arene-26, 28-diol) (4) and 25, 25', 27, 27'-bis(1, ,4-dioxybutane)-bis (5, 11, 17, 23-tetra-tert-butylcalix[4]arene-26, 28-diol) (5) were sjnthesized by the reaction of p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene (1) with preorganized 25, 27-bis (3-bromoproxyl) calix [4] arene-26, 27-diol (2) and 25, 27-bis(3 - bromobutoxyl) calix[4]arene-26, 27-diol (3) in the presence of K2CO3 and KI. Compounds 4 and 5 were characterized with X-ray analysis and the selectivity of 4 and 5 toward K+ over other alkali metal ions, alkaline metal ions as well as NH4+ were investigated with an ion-selective electrode.

Abstract:Heteroatom-bridged dichlorinated calix[2]arene[2]triazines, which were synthesized from the fragment coupling reactions of cyanuric chloride and various aromatic dinucleophiles, are a unique type of platform for the construction of functional macrocyclic host molecules. Utilizing a very convenient and straightforward nucleophilic displacement reaction of dichlorinated tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine by various chelating group-containing amines, a number of functionalized tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines on the larger rim were efficiently synthesized in good yields. The resulting tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazines armed with two 2,2'-bi(pyridinyl)amino or two bis(2-pyridinemethyl)amino groups selectively formed 1:1 complexes with Cu2+ ion through most probably a chelating interaction effect.

Abstract:Under microwave irradiation,calixarenes derivatives with fully substituted ester groups were quickly synthesized with good yields by using p-tert-butyl calixarene[n]arenes and ethyl α-chloroacetate as the starting materials,and PEG-400 as the catalyst.This method was simple and efficient,requiring less reaction time with reduced pollution.

Abstract:A new facile method of synthesis of calix[4]arene amide via the aminolysis of the calix[4]arene esters was reported. One ethyl ester of the compound ( 2 ) was aminolysized byn-butylamine. The crystal structure of compound ( 1 )shows that one ethyl ester of compound ( 1 ) enters into thecavity of another compound ( 1 ) forming a long chainhost-guest supramolecule. From the 2D NMR data, the compound( 1 ) does not assemble in THF or CHCl 3 solution. The CH-π interaction and crystallization energy might be theimportant driving forces for forming the self-assembledcalix[4]arene.

Abstract:Utilizing simple precursors for the exquisite construction of molecules with diversity and complexity is urgent. Herein, a novel A3-X type reaction for functionalized 3-haloquinolines has been developed by PhI (OAc)2-mediated four-component tandem addition/cyclization/oxidation/aromatization process with simple aromatic amine, aldehyde, alkyne and halide salt. Broad functional group tolerance, very mild condition, easy for further transformation illustrate the concision, high efficiency and practicability of this A3-X type reaction.
