Abstract:A new efficient synthesis of p-nitrocalix[4]arene from calix[4]arene by using nitrogen dioxide is described.The compound is an useful intermediates for the introduction of other functional groups to obtain N containing substituted calix[4]arene.The reaction mechanism is briefly discussed.

Abstract:25,27-Diisopropoxy-26,28-dihydroxy-calix[4]arene(2) was synthesized by dialkylation of 25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxy-calix[4]arene(1) and 2-iodopropane(i-PrI) using K2CO3 as the catalyst in MeCN.The structure was confirmed by 1H NMR and MS.The optimum reaction conditions were as followed: 1 was 23.8 mmol;n(1) ∶n(K2CO3) ∶n(i-PrI) ∶n(MeCN) was 1.0 ∶1.1 ∶3.3 ∶84.0;ionization time was 1.5 h at 84 ℃;reflux reaction time was 24 h.The yield of 2 was 84.13% with purity of 95%.

Abstract:Four tetraalkylethers (2a ∼ 2d, n - C 4H 9input commasn - C 8H 17input commas n - C 16H 33) of p -tertbutylcalix[4]arene and the corresponding ethers of p - nitrocalix[4] arenes (3a ∼ 3d)were prepared in the cone conformation by the etheration with NaH as abase in DMF and the ipso - nitration. 1H NMR show that all new calix[4]arenes are cone conformation.

Abstract:Syntheses of p-nitrocalix[n]arenes were carried out under different reaction conditions by using nitrogen dioxide as nitration agent. It was found that only p-nitrocalix[4]arene, p-nitrocalix[6]arene and 25,26,27,28-tetramethoxy-5,11,17,23-tetranitrocalix[4]arene were obtained from the corresponding calix[4]arene, calix[6]arene and 25,26,27,28-tetramethoxycalix[4]arene in yields of 90%, 70% and 40% respectively. Especially, the reaction of calix[4]arene with NO2 could be finished in 20 min. The reaction mechanism based on resonance structures of phenoxy anion in calixarene is discussed.

Abstract:A supramolecular recognizable agent,5,11,17,23-tetra-butyl-25,26,27,28-tetrahydroxy-calix[4]-arene(TBTHC4),has been synthesized by the reaction of p-tert-butylphenol and formaldehyde catalyzed with NaOH in diphenyl ether.The influences of operating conditions,such as the amount of NaOH and formaldehyde solution,the reaction time,the amount of diphenyl ether as well as the organic solvents in recrystallization were investigated.The results showed that the yield of the TBTHC4 product can be reached to 66.38%,as the amount of substance ratio of p-tert-buthypheno,NaOH,and formaldehyde was 1∶0.1∶1.5,refluxing for 5 h in diphenyl ether at 533 K,and recrystallizing with ethyl acetate.

Abstract:A novel deep-cavity calixarene, p-[1-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]calix[8]arene 1 was synthesized and its complexation with aromatic compounds was examined, Reaction of p-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]phenol 2 with paraformaldehyde under various conditions only resulted in p-[1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-methylethyl]calix[8]arene 3, and no corresponding calix[4]arene and calix[6]arene were detected, Removal of the methyl in the ether groups of 3 afforded 1 in 80% yield, Solubilization, fluorescence and photochemical probe studies demonstrated that 1 forms inclusion complexes with a variety of aromatic compounds in polar non-aqueous solutions.

Abstract:A concise and efficient synthetic approach was developed for the synthesis of functionalized chromeno[4,3-b]pyrrol-4(1H)-ones via a one-pot, three-component reaction of 4-aminocoumarin, arylglyoxal monohydrates, and aromatic amines promoted by KHSO4 in toluene under reflux condition. The attractive features of this protocol are operational simplicity, short reaction time, easy purification of products and good to excellent yields.

Abstract:Since the pioneering work of Gutsche on calix[n]arenes, many functionalized calixarenes have been prepared. The full bromination of calix[4]arene by a direct process has been regarded as unavailable. Therefore, a more circuitous route including three steps has been developed. But in the present work p-tetrabromocalix[4]arene, which serves as a potential intermediate to derive functionalized calixarenes, is successfully synthesized with a high yield by an improved direct bromination procedure. The analytical results are in complete accordance with those reported in previous literature. The reason why the conventional methods cannot provide full bromination is discussed.

Abstract:A simple and powerful one-pot reaction method was developed for the synthesis of heteracalixaromatics. In the presence of a base, one-pot macrocyclic condensation reaction between cyanuric chloride and 1,3-phenylene diols and diamines proceeded effectively under very mild conditions to afford a number of functionalised oxygen and nitrogen-bridged calix[2]arene[2]triazines in 33-54% yields. The method was applied in a multigram-scale (14.4 g) preparation of tetraoxacalix[2]arene[2]triazine.

Abstract:A selective nitration of calix[4]arene at the upper rim in one pot process was described by monitoring the time dependence of the distribution of products by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The discrimination of five nitrated products was accomplished by molecular symmetry considerations and H-1 NMR analysis. As a result, unusual 5,11,17-trinitrocalix[4]arene (2d) was obtained in 57% isolated yield. 5,11-Dinitro-calix[4]arene (2b) and 5,11,17-trinitrocalix[4]arene (2d) with tetranitrocalix[4]arene 2e were further characterized by crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Furthermore, as an example of potential application, trinitrocalix[4]arene 2d could be converted to triaminocalix[4]arene 3d conveniently.

Abstract:A novel method for the preparation of chromogenic calixarenes with azo groups was reported. p ‐Substituted (‐ NO 2 , ‐ CH 3 , ‐ Cl) anilines were diazotized with isoamyl nitrite in EtONa/EtOH under refluxing condition. Fifteen mono‐, bis‐, tris‐ and tetrakis( p ‐substituted phenyl)azo calix[4]arenes (including proximal and distal isomers) were obtained respectively by diazo‐coupling in different molar ratio to calix[4]arenes (1) under pH = 7.5–9.0 in non‐aqueous solution at 0‐5 °C. 1 H NMR and u C NMR spectra of (α‐substituted phenyl)azo calix[4]‐arenes Indicated that they existed in cone conformation in solution.

Abstract:A new compound, 25,27-dihydroxy-26,28-di(hydroxyethoxy) calix[4] arene, was obtained by the reaction of calix[4]arene with iodoethanol. Its structure was characterized by IR, UV, MS, H-1 NMR and (13) C NMR spectra. The coordination behavior of the product with 4 kinds of rare earth metal( II ) nitrates in acetonitrile was studied by using fluorescence spectrometry. The stability constants (1gKs) of the complexes of the product with rare earth metal( II ) nitrates and the Gibbs free energy change(-DeltaGdegrees) of the coordination reactions were calculated according to the modified Hilderbrand-Benesi equation. The results indicated that the coordination ability of the product with rare earth metal( II ) nitrates were stronger.

Abstract:Seven OH-free and O-permethylated monofunctionalized calix[5]arenes carrying either additional methyl or tert-butyl groups are prepared following fragment condensation protocols. This strategy proves to be superior to previous approaches. Calix[5]arenes with free OH groups all adopt a cone conformation stabilized by a seam of hydrogen bonds at the lower rim. Post-condensation modifications, i.e., methylation of phenolic OH groups or functional group interconversions can also be achieved. Bulky tert-butyl groups are also found to stabilize the cone conformations of O-methylated compounds. These compounds offer versatile functional groups that make these concave molecules interesting building blocks for the synthesis of more sophisticated molecular architectures.

Abstract:Five novel azo calix[4]arenes were reported.The p-aminobenzaldehyde was diazotized with sodium nitrite in aqueous hydrochloride solution.Mono-,bis-,tris- and tetrakis(p-formylphenyl)azo calix[4]arenes (including proximal and distal isomers) were obtained respectively by diazo-coupling in different molar ratio to calix[4]arene (1) under pH=7.5-8.5 at 0-5℃.All (p-formylphenyl)azo calix[4]arenes were characterized by 1H NMR,13C NMR,IR,MS (ESIMS) spectroscopies and elemental analysis.

Abstract:Mediated by Cu(ClO4)(2), in the presence of K3PO4 under mild conditions, azacalix[1]arene[3]pyridines underwent arene C-H bond amination with a number of sulfonamides, imides, and saccharin to afford the diverse C-N bond forming products. Based on different reactivity between arylcopper(II) and arylcopper(III) compounds toward nitrogen nucleophiles, the reaction proceeded most likely through arene C-H bond metalation via reactive arylcopper(III) intermediates and their binding to nitrogen anions which were derived from deprotonation of acidic N-H bonds of nitrogen nucleophiles of pK(a) (DMSO) < 17.5 followed by reductive elimination. The study not only provides a convenient and straightforward access to functionalized heteracalixaromatics that are not readily obtained by other means but also enriches our understanding of high valent organocopper chemistry.

Abstract:The p-nitrophenylazo calix[4]arene derivatives 1a-1d with nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were prepared by the diazo-coupling reaction of calix[4]arene with p-nitrophenyl diazonium. The diazotization reaction of p-nitroaniline was carried out with isoamyl nitrite as a source of nitrous acid in EtONa/EtOH under refluxing condition. X-Ray crystallographic analysis and H-1 NMR spectra reveal that they exist as cone conformation in crystal state or in solution. HRS measurements at 1064 ran in THF indicate that p-nitrophenylazo calix[4]arenes have higher hyperpolarizability beta(z) values than the corresponding reference compound 4-(4-nitrophenylazo)- 2,6-dimethyl-phenol, without red shift of the charge transfer bond. The tetrakis p-nitrophenylazo calix[4]arene (2) with longer alkyl chains can form monolayer at the air/water interface.
