Abstract:Sodium batteries are now considered as promising low-cost alternatives for lithium batteries. However, safety problems such as fire and explosion during abuse-testing conditions hinder the development of room temperature sodium batteries. To address these issues, here we propose a nonflammable electrolyte system for sodium batteries. By introducing a high-efficiency flame-retarding additive, the carbonate based electrolyte becomes flame inhibiting. Moreover, the additive can improve the cyclability of both the acetylene black (AB) anode and the Na0.44MnO2 cathode.
A Safer Sodium-Ion Battery Based on Nonflammable Organic Phosphate Electrolyte

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries are now considered as a low-cost alternative to lithium-ion technologies for large-scale energy storage applications; however, their safety is still a matter of great concern for practical applications. In this paper, a safer sodium-ion battery is proposed by introducing a nonflammable phosphate electrolyte (trimethyl phosphate, TMP) coupled with NaNi0.35Mn0.35Fe0.3O2 cathode and Sb-based alloy anode. The physical and electrochemical compatibilities of the TMP electrolyte are investigated by igniting, ionic conductivity, cyclic voltammetry, and charge-discharge measurements. The results exhibit that the TMP electrolyte with FEC additive is completely nonflammable and has wide electrochemical window (0-4.5 V vs. Na/Na+), in which both the Sb-based anode and NaNi0.35Mn0.35Fe0.3O2 cathode show high reversible capacity and cycling stability, similarly as in carbonate electrolyte. Based on these results, a nonflammable sodium-ion battery is constructed by use of Sb anode, NaNi0.35Mn0.35Fe0.3O2 cathode, and TMP + 10 vol% FEC electrolyte, which works very well with considerable capacity and cyclability, demonstrating a promising prospect to build safer sodium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage applications.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have been recognized as one of the most promising new energy storage devices for their rich sodium resources, low cost and high safety. The electrolyte, as a bridge connecting the cathode and anode electrodes, plays a vital role in determining the performance of SIBs, such as coulombic efficiency, energy density and cycle life. Therefore, the overall performance of SIBs could be significantly improved by adjusting the electrolyte composition or adding a small number of functional additives. In this review, the fundamentals of SIB electrolytes including electrode-electrolyte interface and solvation structure are introduced. Then, the mechanisms of electrolyte additive action on SIBs are discussed, with a focus on film-forming additives, flame-retardant additives and overcharge protection additives. Finally, the future research of electrolytes is prospected from the perspective of scientific concepts and practical applications.

Abstract:In order to further improve the safety performance of lithium ion batteries,cyclohexylbenzene(CHB)was investigated to be an overcharge protection additive for non-aqueous liquid electrolyte in lithium ion batteries.Proved by overcharge of batteries,cyclic voltammetry tests and battery power capacity measurements in this research,certain conclusions were obtained.When the external potential ranges from 4.3 V to 5 V,CHB(2.5% or 5% by mass)in the system of electrolyte 1 mol·L-1LiPF6/EC+DEC+DMC(1∶1∶1 by volume)can produce the conductive polymer film,creating the short-circuit between the positive and negative electrodes and causing self-discharge.Therefore the cell's potential can be controlled between 4.5-4.8 V,and the lithium ion batteries can be much safer when overcharged.Meanwhile,during the normal charge-discharge process of the battery system,the addition of the proper weight percentage of CHB does not have negative effect on the capacity character of lithium-ion battery.All these advantages promise CHB to be an ideal overcharge protection additive in lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Redox shuttle additives are already known in the battery field to provide overcharge protection, mainly at high-voltage cathode electrodes. The electroactive species can get either oxidized at the cathode side or reduced at the anode side, preferentially during the battery cycling. The mechanism involves the generation of positively charged radicals during oxidation and the subsequent diffusion and reduction at the anode surface. This shuttling process continues between the electrodes through baseline electrolytes. Redox shuttle additives are extensively studied in Li-ion batteries (LIBs). 1–3 Benzophenone (BP) is one of the redox shuttle additives used successfully in lithium-ion batteries. 4 No report exists in the literature for BP additives in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). This work investigates BP (an already known overcharge protecting additive) and substituted 4-methyl BP (4-methyl benzophenone) as an electrolyte additive in baseline electrolyte containing NaClO 4 in EC/PC solvent on both electrodes. The aim is to investigate BP's SEI-forming properties in sodium-ion batteries. The initial half-cell test with a Hard Carbon anode without and with 0.5 wt% 4-methyl BP as the additive is shown in Fig.1. 4-Methyl BP additive shows a large increase in specific capacity from 337 mAh gm -1 to 438 mAh gm -1 at 0.1C rate in a 5 mV - 1.5 V voltage range. Abstract:The safety of energy storage equipment has always been a stumbling block to the development of battery, and sodium ion battery is no exception. However, as an ultimate solution, the use of non-flammable electrolyte is susceptible to the side effects, and its poor compatibility with electrode, causing failure of batteries. Here, we report a non-flammable electrolyte design to achieve high-performance sodium ion battery, which resolves the dilemma via regulating the solvation structure of electrolyte by hydrogen bonds and optimizing the electrode-electrolyte interphase. The reported non-flammable electrolyte allows stable charge-discharge cycling of both sodium vanadium phosphate@hard carbon and Prussian blue@hard carbon full pouch cell for more than 120 cycles with a capacity retention of >85 % and high cycling Coulombic efficiency (99.7 %).

Abstract:Sodium metal batteries, known for their high theoretical specific capacity, abundant reserves, and promising low-temperature performance, have garnered significant attention. However, the large ionic radius of Na+ and sluggish transport kinetics across the interfacial structure hinder their practical application. Previous reviews have rarely regulated electrolyte performance from the perspective of anions; as important components of the electrolyte, the regulation mechanism is not well understood. Herein, a novel anion receptor additive, 4-aminophenylboronic acid pinalol ester (ABAPE), is proposed to weaken the coupling between anions and cations and accelerate Na+ transport kinetics. The results of theoretical calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy with deep Ar-ion etching demonstrate that the introduction of this additive alters the solvation structure of Na+, reduces the desolvation barrier and forms a stable and dense electrode-electrolyte interface. Moreover, ABAPE forms hydrogen bonds (–NH···O/F) with H2O/HF, effectively preventing the hydrolysis of NaPF6 and stabilizing acidic species. Consequently, the Na||Na symmetric cell exhibits excellent long-cycle performance of 500 h at 1 mA cm-2 and 0.5 mAh cm-2. The Na||Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) full cell with the addition of ABAPE maintains a capacity retention of 84.29% at 1 C after 1200 cycles and presents no capacity decay over 150 cycles at -40°C.

Abstract:In order to improve the ability of overcharge protection, 4BA was added as a novel electropolymerizable additive to the electrolyte of lithium-ion batteries. Proved by overcharge of batteries, cyclic voltammetry, infrared spectra, AC Impedance tests, and discharge capacity measurements in this research, the overcharge protection ability of this novel additive was confirmed. When the external potential was 4.4 V, 4BA (5% by mass) in the system of electrolyte 1 mol.L-1 LiPF6/EC+DEC+DMC (1/1/1, m/m/m) started to electrochemically polymerize and produced a layer of polymer film, which increased the internal resistance and prevented the voltage from dramatically rising Lip. Therefore, the lithium-ion batteries can be much safer. During the normal charge-discharge processes of the battery system, the addition of the proper weight percentage of 4BA does not have negative effect on the capacity of lithium-ion batteries, and the mechanism of overcharge protection is an interdiction mechanism.

Abstract:As promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries suffer from low coulombic efficiency, which stems from Na-deficiency and unstable interfaces for both cathode and anode materials. Exhibiting a favorable solvation structure, Na-naphthalene/tetrahydropyran (Na-NP/THP) is screened and selected as a full-cell presodiation solution for hard carbon (HC) anodes and a P-2 type Na0.67Fe0.1Al0.1Mn0.8O2 (NFAM) cathode, which are both Na-deficient. Through a wealth of characterizations, it is revealed that the proposed presodiation agent not only boosts the initial coulombic efficiency of both HC and NFAM electrodes effectively, but also facilitates robust solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) and cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) on both electrodes. Consequently, the long-term cycling and rate performance are greatly improved thanks to the stabilized structures of electrode materials. Furthermore, a proof-of-concept NFAM||HC pouch cell based on this presodiation strategy is assembled, showing a high reversible capacity and superior cycling performance. By offering a remedy to a full cell system subjected to severe Na-deficiency, this work conceptually demonstrates a feasible strategy to fully tap the potential of high-energy-density materials in sodium-ion batteries.

Application of Anisole, 2-Bromoanisole and 3-Bromoanisole As Overcharge Protection Additives in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Anisole, 2-bromoanisole and 3-bromoanisole were studied as novel additives for overcharge protection in lithium-ion batteries. All the additives were added in the system of electrolyte 1 mol.L-1 LiPF6/EC(ethylene carbonate)+ DEC(diethyl carbonate)+EMC(ethyl methyl carbonate) (1: 1 : 1 in volume). The overcharge protection effect of the three additives on lithium-ion batteries and the compatibility of the additives with the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (NCM) electrode has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), overcharge tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). CV tests was performed with stainless steel/electrolyte (with additives)/Li cells at a scan rate of 5 mV/s. The results suggested that all the additives worked at a potential range from 4.3 V to 5 V. Thus, they were all appropriate for overcharge protection of lithium-ion battery. Moreover they had good oxidation-reduction characters which were able to improve the overcharge protection tolerance. 5 V overcharge tests and 100% overcharge tests (charging the cell twice capacity of itself) had been used to examine the additives' overcharge performance. The battery with 2-bromoanisole exhibited the best overcharge protection capability, which took almost 50 h before charging to 5 V and can be bore 4 times of 100% overcharge, but it had negative effect on the cycle performance of NCM cathode. Anisole also has a good overcharge protection effect, meanwhile the NCM/Li battery with anisole hold capacity retention of 93.8% after 80 cycles at 0.2 C, showing favorable cycle stability in comparison with 78.5% of 2-bromoanisole. EIS measurements were taken before and after overcharge over the frequency from 100 kHz to 10 mHz with an AC oscillation of 5 mV. The result revealed a sharp increase in impedance of the batteries with additives. SEM was employed to investigate the morphology of NCM electrodes. Through SEM test, it is clear that after the batteries with above three additives (especially the 2-bromoanisole) overcharging,. some oxidation-reduction byproducts generated and adhered on the surfaces of NCM electrodes, which enlarged the total impedance of batteries.

Abstract:Nonflammable phosphate electrolytes are in principle able to build intrinsically safe Na-ion batteries, but their electrochemical incompatibility with anodic materials, especially hard carbon anode, restricts their battery applications. Here, we propose a new strategy to enable high-capacity utilization and cycle stability of hard carbon anodes in the nonflammable phosphate electrolyte by using low-cost Na+ salt with a high molar ratio of salt/solvent combined with an solid electrolyte interphase film-forming additive. As a result, the carbon anode in the trimethyl phosphate (TMP) electrolyte with a high molar ratio of [NaClO4]/[TMP] and 5% fluoroethylene carbonate additive demonstrates a high reversible capacity of 238 mAh g-1, considerable rate capability, and long-term cycling life with 84% capacity retention over 1500 cycles. More significantly, this work provides a promising route to build intrinsically safe and low-cost sodium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage applications.

Abstract:Despite their beneficial effect on battery safety, non-flammable electrolytes often have an adverse side effect on the electrochemical performance of lithium and sodium ion batteries due to their poor compatibility with the electrodes. In this paper, we report a new non-flammable electrolyte consisting of trimethyl phosphate (TMP) and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (F-EPE) as non-flammable solvents and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) as additive with different concentration of Na salts, and a EC-DEC-FEC electrolyte was also prepared as baseline electrolyte. The flammability and non-flammability of the prepared electrolytes was tested. It is shown that the prepared electrolyte not only increases the capacity (129.9 vs. 122.5 mAh g(-1) of baseline electrolyte) of NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 (NFM) cathode but also stabilizes the cyclability (70.8% retention after 500 cycles) of NFM/HC (HC: hard carbon) pouch cells. The dissolution of pristine NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode material in different solvents and electrolytes, and the XPS patterns of the cycled NFM cathode in the prepared electrolytes were also studied to understand the capacity fading mechanism. These results indicate that this new non-flammable electrolyte holds great potential for application in rechargeable sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Electrolyte additive engineering, as the most economical, efficient, and practical technology is applied to solve critical battery problems. A comprehensive review of electrolyte additive engineering strategies for sodium batteries is presented from functional perspectives, including film‐forming, flame retardant, overcharge protection, high voltage, acid and water removal, inhibition of gas production, high/ low temperature and protecting sodium metal anode. Sodium‐based rechargeable batteries are considered one of the strongest contenders for the next generation of power storage devices. Functional electrolytes with additives play a crucial role in influencing the electrochemical performance of sodium‐based batteries. The addition of small doses of additives can greatly enhance the electrolyte, improving energy density, cycling performance, and safety. This paper presents an overview of recent research focused on novel additives for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) and sodium‐metal batteries (SMBs). The additives are categorized based on their specific functions, including film‐forming, flame retardant, overcharge protection, high‐voltage, acid and water removal, inhibition of gas production, high and low temperature and protection of sodium metal anode. The working mechanisms for these additives are thoroughly explained. Finally, potential future research directions are proposed.

Enabling Highly‐Reversible Aqueous Zn‐Ion Batteries via 4‐Hydroxybenzoic Acid Sodium Salt Electrolyte Additive

Abstract:Due to the intrinsic safety and cost effectiveness, aqueous Zn‐ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered as the promising candidate for the future energy storage systems. However, the widespread implementation of AZIBs faces significant obstacles due to various undesirable side reactions, including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), corrosion, and uncontrolled dendrite growth at the anodes. Here, 4‐hydroxybenzoic acid sodium salt (PHB) is employed in the ZnSO4 electrolyte to enable highly‐reversible zinc anodes. PHB has a greater tendency to bind with the Zn surface, resulting in increased steric effects within the electrolyte. As a result, it hinders the direct interaction between anode and water while facilitating the uniform plating of Zn2+. Zn/Zn batteries with PHB additives realized more than 1600 h stable cycling life under 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2. Moreover, Zn/Cu batteries with PHB additives achieved a reversible plating/stripping process for over 500 cycles with high average CE of 98.6%. In addition, the assembled Zn/NH4V4O10 batteries with PHB additive yielded 80.5 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles at 10 A g−1. The inexpensive and effective application of PHB as an electrolyte additive has the potential to significantly enhance the stability and dependability of ZIBs.

Abstract:Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have enjoyed speedy development in the past decades driven by sustainability and cost advantage. Electrolytes are in large part responsible for battery performances in terms of lifetime and durability. In this review, the fundamentals, recent developments, and limitations of electrolytes for SIBs are summarized and discussed in detail. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), driven by sustainability and cost advantage, have been recognized as one of the most promising electrochemical energy storage devices. Electrolytes, as the most unique component that not only ionically connect while insulating electronically electrodes but also determine the eventual improvements in performance mainly regarding cycle life, Coulombic efficiency, energy density, and safety, hold the key to the practical implementation of SIBs. In this review, the fundamental design principles of Na+‐ion electrolytes and the chemical properties of the Na+ cation over the Li+ cation in terms of ion transport, salt dissolution, and solvation structure are first discussed. Then, a sequence of crucial experimental discoveries and strategical achievements in the field of electrolytes for SIBs are presented, with focuses on the ether‐based electrolytes for co‐intercalation into graphite, diluted and highly concentrated electrolytes, wide temperature range electrolytes, nonflammable electrolytes, indispensable electrolyte components (functional additives and new sodium salts). Finally, a detailed analysis of research trends of practically feasible Na+‐ion electrolytes is presented to aid in the ongoing quest for better SIBs of the future.
