Abstract:Advanced anode materials possessing high performance, excellent stability, and low cost are quite insufficient for sodium ion batteries (NIBs), and there is a call for huge progress to meet the prerequisites toward practical applications. Herein, a silicon diphosphide (SiP2)/carbon composite anode was synthesized by a facile ball milling method to improve the NIBs performance. The well-constructed composite comprised of uniformly distributed SiP2 nanocrystallites within a conductive carbon framework greatly enhanced the electrode conductivity and structural compatibility to repeated sodiation/desodiation conversions and thus generated an excellent cyclability of >80% capacity retention for 500 cycles, a high Coulombic efficiency of 99%, and a promising fast-rate capability. In-situ/ex-situ X-ray diffraction and in-situ transmission electron microscopy investigations on the reversible electrochemical conversion of SiP2 showed the formation of Na3P and NaSi6 as the main sodiation products. This study sheds light on the realization of large-scale, high-performance NIBs through superior phosphorus-based anode materials.

Abstract:As a competitive anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), a commercially available red phosphorus, featured with a high theoretical capacity (2596 mA h g(-1)) and a suitable operating voltage plateau (0.1-0.6 V), has been confronted with a severe structural instability and a rapid capacity degradation upon large volumetric change. In particular, the fundamental determining factors for phosphorus anode materials are yet poorly understood, and their interfacial stability against ambient air has not been explored and clarified. Herein, a high-performance phosphorus/carbon anode material has been fabricated simply through ball-milling the carbon black and red phosphorus, delivering a high reversible capacity of 1070 mA h g(-1) at 400 mA g(-1) after 200 cycles and a superior rate capability of 479 mA h g(-1) at 3200 mA g(-1). More importantly, we first reveal the significance of inhibiting the exposure of phosphorus/carbon electrode materials to air, even for a short period, for achieving a good electrochemical performance, which would sharply decrease the reversible capacities. With the assistance of synchrotron-based X-ray techniques, the formation and accumulation of insulating phosphate compounds can be spectroscopically identified, leading to the decay of electrochemical performance. At the same time, these passivation layers on the surface of electrode were found to occur via a self-oxidation process in ambient air. To maintain the electrochemical advantages of phosphorus anodes, it is necessary to inhibit their contact with air through a rational coating or an optimal storage condition. Additionally, the employment of a fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) additive facilitates the decomposition of the electrolyte and favors the formation of a robust solid electrolyte interphase layer, which may suppress the side reactions between the active Na-P compounds and the electrolyte. These findings could help improve the surface protection and interfacial stability of phosphorus anodes for high-performance SIBs.
Biomass‐Derived Phosphorus‐Doped Porous Hard Carbon Anode for Stable and High‐Rate Sodium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Biomass‐derived hard carbon, despite being promising for anode material of sodium‐ion batteries, usually suﬀer from low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), poor rate capacity, and limited cycling stability caused by complex surface defects and low intrinsic conductivity. Herein, phosphorus‐doped porous hard carbon (HC@PC‐P) were synthesized by the thermal polymerization of soy lecithin on the surfaces of hard carbon derived from olive kernels. The incorporation of heteroatom phosphorus in the porous hard carbon framework expands the carbon lattice spacing, optimizes the graphitization degree, and increases electrical conductivity, guaranteeing ensuring rapid electron and ion transfer. These coupling effects enable HC@PC‐P anode to achieve a high reversible capacity of 350 mAh g‐1 at 0.1 A g‐1, an impressive initial coulombic efficiency of 89.6%, and remarkable long‐term cycling stability at 1 A g‐1 over 1000 cycles with negligible capacity fade. The mechanisms behind sodium storage and enhanced electrochemical performance were elucidated by ex‐situ Raman spectroscopy and kinetic analysis. Additionally, the assembled HC@PC‐P//Na3V2(PO4)3 full cell demonstrated a high energy density of 257.9 Wh kg‐1. This work provides a rational guide for designing advanced hard carbon anode materials for high‐energy sodium‐ion batteries.

Abstract:Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have been considered as a top alternative to lithium ion batteries due to the earth abundance and low cost of sodium compared with lithium. Among all proposed anode materials for SIBs, red phosphorus (P) is a very promising candidate because it has the highest theoretical capacity (∼2600 mAh/g). In this study, a red P-single-walled carbon nanotube (denoted as red P-SWCNT) composite, in which red P is uniformly distributed between tangled SWCNTs bundles, is fabricated by a modified vaporization-condensation method. Benefiting from the nondestructive preparation process, the highly conductive and mechanically strong SWCNT network is preserved, which enhances the conductivity of the composite and stabilizes the solid electrolyte interphase. As a result, the red P-SWCNT composite presents a high overall sodium storage capacity (∼700 mAh/gcomposite at 50 mA/gcomposite), fast rate capability (∼300 mAh/gcomposite at 2000 mA/gcomposite), and stable long-term cycling performance with 80% capacity retention after 2000 sodiation-desodiation cycles. The red P-SWCNT composite fabricated by the vaporization-condensation method significantly extends the cycling stability of P/carbon composite from current ∼100 cycles to ∼2000 cycles.

Abstract:Room temperature sodium-ion batteries are of great interest for high-energy-density energy storage systems because of low-cost and natural abundance of sodium. Here, we report a novel phosphorus/graphene nanosheet hybrid as a high performance anode for sodium-ion batteries through facile ball milling of red phosphorus and graphene stacks. The graphene stacks are mechanically exfoliated to nanosheets that chemically bond with the surfaces of phosphorus particles. This chemical bonding can facilitate robust and intimate contact between phosphorus and graphene nanosheets, and the graphene at the particle surfaces can help maintain electrical contact and stabilize the solid electrolyte interphase upon the large volume change of phosphorus during cycling. As a result, the phosphorus/graphene nanosheet hybrid nanostructured anode delivers a high reversible capacity of 2077 mAh/g with excellent cycling stability (1700 mAh/g after 60 cycles) and high Coulombic efficiency (>98%). This simple synthesis approach and unique nanostructure can potentially be applied to other phosphorus-based alloy anode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Tin-antimony/phosphorus nanocomposite thin films have been successfully prepared by pulsed laser deposition and are studied as anode materials for sodium ion batteries. The thin films exhibit a specific capacity of about 252 mAh g(-1) over 100 cycles at a rate of 250 mA g(-1), which is much higher than those for tin-antimony alloy, antimony or tin thin films. The improved electrochemical performance is attributed to the introduced phosphorus, which plays a key role in forming a stable solid electrolyte interface layer, thus enhances the reversibility. Phase separation is revealed after the initial cycle by forming the metallic tin and antimony nanoparticles. In addition, introducing phosphorus into tinantimony alloy film can reduce the interfacial resistance between the electrode and electrolyte, as well as facilitate sodium-ion diffusion in the electrode. Abstract:Although the room-temperature rechargeable sodium-ion battery has emerged as an attractive alternative energy storage solution for large-scale deployment, major challenges toward practical sodium-ion battery technology remain including identification and engineering of anode materials that are both technologically feasible and economical. Herein, an antimony-based anode is developed by incorporating antimony into graphitic carbon matrices using low-cost materials and scalable processes. The composite anode exhibits excellent overall performance in terms of packing density, fast charge/discharge capability and cyclability, which is enabled by the conductive and compact graphitic network. A full cell design featuring this composite anode with a hexacyanometallate cathode achieves superior power output and low polarization, which offers the potential for realizing a high-performance, cost-effective sodium-ion battery.

Abstract:Black phosphorus (BP) has received increasing research attention as an anode material in sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), owing to its high capacity, electronic conductivity, and chemical stability. However, it is still challenging for BP-based SIB anodes to achieve a high electrochemical performance utilizing cost-effective materials and synthetic methods. This work presents a sodium-ion anode based on a BP-carbon nanocomposite synthesized from commercial red phosphorus and low-cost super P carbon black. Intimate interactions between BP and carbon are present, which helps to maintain the electrical conduction during cycling and, therefore, a high cycling stability is achieved. It exhibits a high capacity retention of 1381 mAhg(-1) for sodium-ion storage after 100 cycles, maintaining 90.5% of the initial reversible capacity. Such high performance/materials cost ratio may provide direction for future phosphorus-based anodes in high energy density SIBs.

Abstract:The formidable sustainability challenges in advancing energy storage technologies call for game-changing research in battery designs. The previous pursuing of novel cathode materials with high redox potentials impedes the vast applications due to the simultaneous electrolyte decomposition at high potentials, though they are expected to deliver high specific capacities. Eventually, people start thinking in an opposite way, desirable anode materials with low redox potentials can also own high specific capacities. Among all the promising candidates, phosphorus-based anodes in sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have received considerable attention owing to the low cost and relatively high natural abundance of phosphorus. More importantly, phosphorus can store three sodium atoms and enable a high theoretical capacity of 2596 mAh g(-1), which overwhelms any other SIB anode currently available. However, the poor electronic conductivity and large volume change of phosphorus during cycling severely deteriorate battery performance. The most widely used strategy is to confine phosphorus within well-designed carbon hosts. We thereby introduce a new type of porous hollow carbon with conductive-network interior as phosphorus host, which not only improves the electrical conductivity, but also creates enough interior surface for maximizing phosphorus utilization and shortening the ion's diffusion distance, compared to those conventional hollow carbon hosts. Therefore, the as-prepared red phosphorus-carbon spheres composites (RP/CS) exhibit superior rate performance (similar to 1083 mAh g(-1) at 4 A g(-1), similar to 837 mAh g(-1) even at 8 A g(-1)) and excellent cycle life (1027 mAh g(-1) at 4 A g(-1) more than 2000 cycles).
MOF‐Derived Fe 7 S 8 Nanoparticles/N‐Doped Carbon Nanofibers as an Ultra‐Stable Anode for Sodium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have aroused wide concern due to their potential applications in large-scale energy-storage systems. In this work, a hybrid of Fe7S8 nanoparticles/N-doped carbon nanofibers (Fe7S8/N-CNFs) is designed and synthesized via electrospinning. As an anode for SIBs, Fe7S8/N-CNFs exhibit a high reversible capacity of 649.9 mAh g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 after 100 cycles, and superior cycling stability for 2000 cycles at 1 A g−1 with only 0.00302% capacity decay per cycle. Such excellent performance originates from: i) Fe7S8 nanoparticles (average diameter of 17 nm), which shorten the Na+ diffusion distance; ii) the unique 3D N-CNFs, which enhance the conductivity, alleviate the self-agglomeration and large volume change of Fe7S8 nanoparticles, and offer numerous active sites for Na+ adsorption and paths for electrolyte diffusion. The fascinating structure and superior electrochemical properties of Fe7S8/N-CNFs shed light on developing high-performance SIBs anode materials.

New Binder‐Free Metal Phosphide–Carbon Felt Composite Anodes for Sodium‐Ion Battery

Abstract:Metal phosphides are promising anode candidates for sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high specific capacity and low operating potential but suffer from poor cycling stability caused by huge volume expansion and poor solid‐state ion transfer rate. Herein, a new strategy to grow a new class of mesoporous metal phosphide nanoarrays on carbon felt (CF) as binder‐free anodes for SIBs is reported. The resultant integrated electrodes demonstrate excellent cycling life up to 1000 times (>90% retention rate) and high rate capability of 535 mAh g−1 at a current density of 4 A g−1. Detailed characterization reveals that the synergistic effect of unique mesoporous structure for accommodating huge volume expansion during sodiation/desodiation process, ultrasmall primary particle size (≈10 nm) for providing larger electrode/electrolyte contact area and shorter ion diffusion distance, and 3D conductive networks for facilitating the electrochemical reaction, leads to the extraordinary battery performance. Remarkably, a full SIB using the new CoP4/CF anode and a Na3V2(PO4)2F3 cathode delivers an average operating voltage of ≈3.0 V, a reversible capacity of 553 mAh g−1, and very high energy density of ≈280 Wh kg−1 for SIBs. A flexible SIB with outstanding mechanical strength based on this binder‐free new anode is also demonstrated. New types of robust mesoporous metal phosphide arrays on carbon felt (CF) are developed as binder‐free anodes for sodium‐ion batteries. Thanks to the mesoporous structure, ultrasmall primary particle size and 3D conductive networks, the integrated electrodes demonstrate remarkable cycling life up to 1000 times and excellent rate capability. A sodium‐ion full cell delivers a high energy density of 280 Wh kg−1.

Abstract:Exploring proper anode hosts with stable and ultrafast sodium storage capability is a big challenge for commercializing sodium ion batteries. And tin-based sulfides are considered as ideal anode material for sodium ion batteries because of the high theoretical capacity, while its practical application is limited to the poor cycling stability and inferior rate capability, which are induced by the huge volume variation upon sodiation and poor conductivity of those sulfides. Herein, amorphous tin-based bimetallic sulfides hollow nanocubes encapsulated by carbon are constructed and such amorphous bimetallic sulfides show excellent rate performance (478 mAh g(-1) at 10 A g(-1)) and good cycle stability (83% capacity retention after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g(-1)). And kinetic analysis reveals a pseudocapacitance-dominated sodium storage mechanism in the composite. Such rational nanostructure design and multicomponent synergistic interaction system can inspire further development of high performance amorphous nanomaterials for batteries and energy storage and conversion devices. Abstract:Sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted soaring attention lately as a promising alternative to lithium ion batteries (LIBs), because of the vast availability of sodium, its low price and similar physicochemical properties to lithium. In recent years, significant progress of sodium ion battery anodes, which restricted the development of SIBs in the past decades, has been achieved. Extensive investigations have demonstrated that carbonaceous materials can become the most promising anode candidates for SIBs due to their low cost, high stability and electronic conductivity. In this article, a variety of carbon nanomaterials, including carbon quantum dots (CQDs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), carbon nanofibers (CNFs), carbon nanosheets, and graphene as well as graphite and amorphous carbon anodes for SIBs, are briefly reviewed in view of their different dimensions and graphitization degrees. It also elaborates on research on carbonaceous material modification by doping with heteroatoms, designing various porous morphologies or compositing with organic or inorganic species. Finally, some perspectives and directions on carbon design for SIBs are also proposed. These comprehensive and in-depth discussions will provide an insight into the optimization of carbonaceous materials in SIB anodes.

Abstract:Antimony- (Sb) based materials have been considered as one of promising anodes for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) owing to their high theoretical capacities and appropriate sodium inserting potentials. So far, the reported energy density and cycling stability of the Sb-based anodes for SIBs are quite limited and need to be significantly improved. Here, we develop a novel Sb/C hybrid encapsulating the Sb nanorods into highly conductive N and S codoped carbon (Sb@(N, S-C)) frameworks. As an anode for SIBs, the Sb@(N, S-C) hybrid maintains high reversible capacities of 621.1 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1 after 150 cycles, and 390.8 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 1000 cycles. At higher current densities of 2, 5, and 10 A g-1, the Sb@(N, S-C) hybrid also can display high reversible capacities of 534.4, 430.8, and 374.7 mAh g-1, respectively. Such impressive sodium storage properties are mainly attributed to the unique cross-linked carbon networks providing highly conductive frameworks for fast transfer of ions and electrons, alleviating the volume expansion and preventing the agglomeration of Sb nanorods during the cycling.
Biomimetic Sn4P3 Anchored on Carbon Nanotubes As an Anode for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Abstract:Recently, Sn4P3 has emerged as a promising anode for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to the high specific capacity. However, the use of Sn4P3 has been impeded by capacity fade and an inferior rate performance. Herein, a biomimetic heterostructure is reported by using a simple hydrothermal reaction followed by thermal treatment. This bottlebrush-like structure consists of a stein-like carbon nanotube (CNT) as the electron expressway and mechanical support; fructus-like Sn4P3 nanoparticles as the active material; and the permeable stoma-like thin carbon coating as the buffer layer. Having benefited from the biomimetic structure, a superior electrochemical performance is obtained in the SIBs. It exhibits a high capacity of 742 mA h g(-1) after 150 cycles at 0.2C, and superior rate performance with 449 mA h g(-1) at 2C after 500 cycles. Moreover, the sodium storage mechanism is confirmed by cyclic voltammetry and ex situ X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. In situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was adopted to analyze the reaction dynamics. This research represents a further step toward figuring out the inferior electrochemical performance of other metal phosphide materials.

Abstract:An amorphous red phosphorus/carbon composite is obtained through a facile and simple ball milling process, and its electrochemical performance as an anode material for Na ion batteries is evaluated. The composite shows excellent electrochemical performance including a high specific capacity of 1890 mA h g(-1), negligible capacity fading over 30 cycles, an ideal redox potential (0.4 V vs. Na/Na(+)), and an excellent rate performance, thus making it a promising candidate for Na ion batteries.

Abstract:As a potential alternative to lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted more and more attention due to the lower cost of sodium than lithium. Red phosphorus (RP) is an especially promising anode for SIBs with the highest theoretical capacity of 2596 mAh g-1, which faces the challenges of large volume change and low conductivity. Herein, we develop a nanoporous RP on reduced graphene oxide (NPRP@RGO) as a high-performance anode for SIBs through boiling. Its nanoporous structure could accommodate the volume change and minimize the ion diffusion length, and the high electronic conductive network built on RGO sheets facilitates the fast electron and ion transportation. As a result, NPRP@RGO exhibits a superhigh capacity (1249.7 mAh gcomposite-1 after 150 cycles at 173.26 mA gcomposite-1), superior rate capability (656.9 mAh gcomposite-1 at 3465.28 mA gcomposite-1), and ultralong cycle life at 5.12 A gRP-1 for RP-based electrodes (775.3 mAh gRP-1 after 1500 cycles). The successful synthesis of NPRP@RGO marks a significant enhanced performance for RP-based SIB anodes, providing a scalable synthesis route for nanoporous structures.
Reduced Graphene Oxide-Incorporated SnSb@CNF Composites as Anodes for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries because of the low cost and natural abundance of sodium resources. Nevertheless, low energy density and poor cycling stability of current SIBs unfavorably hinder their practical implementation for the smart power grid and stationary storage applications. Antimony tin (SnSb) is one of the most promising anode materials for next-generation SIBs attributing to its high capacity, high abundance, and low toxicity. However, the practical application of SnSb anodes in SIBs is currently restricted because of their large volume changes during cycling, which result in serious pulverization and loss of electrical contact between the active material and the carbon conductor. Herein, we apply reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-incorporated SnSb@carbon nanofiber (SnSb@rGO@CNF) composite anodes in SIBs that can sustain their structural stability during prolonged charge-discharge cycles. Electrochemical performance results shed light on that the combination of rGO, CNF, and SnSb alloy led to a high-capacity anode (capacity of 490 mAh g-1 at the 10th cycle) with a high capacity retention of 87.2% and a large Coulombic efficiency of 97.9% at the 200th cycle. This work demonstrates that the SnSb@rGO@CNF composite is a potential and attractive anode material for next-generation, high-energy SIBs.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered a top alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for large-scale renewable energy storage units due to their low cost and the abundance of sodium-bearing precursors in the earth's mineral deposits. However, the development of anode materials for SIBs to date has been mainly limited to carbonaceous materials with minimal research devoted to high capacity alloy-based materials. In this study, an antimony (Sb)/carbon (C) electrode with ~30 nm Sb nanoparticles (NPs) uniformly encapsulated in interconnecting one-dimensional (1D) 400 nm carbon fibers (denoted as SbNP@C) was fabricated using a simple and scalable electrospinning method. This binder-free, current collector-free SbNP@C electrode demonstrated high capacity and stable long-term cycling performance at various current densities. The SbNP@C electrode showed an initial total capacity of 422 mAh/gelectrode and retained 350 mAh/gelectrode after 300 deep charge-discharge cycles under 100 mA/gSb. Moreover, because of the efficient 1D sodium-ion transport pathway and the highly conductive network of SbNP@C, the electrode preserved high overall capacities even when cycled at high currents, extending its usability to high power applications.

Abstract:Alloying-type anode materials are hopeful candidates for sodium (Na)-ion batteries (SIBs) because of their high theoretical capacity by forming Na-rich intermetallic compounds. However, the huge volume changes lead to serious aggregation and crushing of active materials during the cycling process, resulting in a rapid decay in the capacity of the electrode materials. Herein, we report the manufacture of reduced graphene oxide wrapped on the surface of tin-antimony/nitrogen-doped porous carbon nanofibers (SnSb/N-PCNFs/rGO) by a coaxial electrospinning technique and subsequent annealing treatment. The cooperative effect of rGO and PCNFs can greatly relieve the volume expansion of the SnSb alloy in the cycling process and offer more insertion sites for Na+ ions, thus significantly improving the electrochemical performance. As a SIB anode, the SnSb/N-PCNFs/rGO composite exhibits better reversible capacity (maintaining 416 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) after 120 cycles), excellent rate performance, and marvelous cycle performance (up to 303 mAh g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1) after 1000 cycles), making it a hopeful anode candidate for SIBs.
