Abstract:A novel wavelength detection and demodulation technique of fiber Bragg gratings sensors is put forward. The principle, experimental setup and results of the sensor are analyzed. The new technique converts detections of shift of center reflecting wavelength into detection of light intensity extremum. Furthermore, a spatial division multiplexing system of Bragg gratings sensors based on the novel technique is developed. The multiplexing numbers are not confined by bandwidth of light source and tunable scope of single fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract:We bring forward a novel FBG sensor multiplexing technique based on the combination of wavelength- and spatial-division multiplexing technique. Furthermore, the data acquisition parameter of the multiplexing sensing FBG system is defined. With this technique, the FBG sensors system not only avoid frequently switching and improve the average response speed, but also are able to enact data acquisition rule according to the data acquisition factor that is composed with priority (PRI), the delay time and the wavelength shift of FBG sensors. Therefore, the smart FBG sensors multiplexing system is more rational and smarter than the conventional counterpart. The simulate result and the experiment work demonstrated that the average delay time of smart system is less than conventional ones and immune to the scale size.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel real-time interrogation technique for a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system that is based on a frequency-shifted asymmetric Sagnac interferometer. FBG sensors are connected to the Sagnac loop by an optical coupler, and an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) is asymmetrically placed in the Sagnac loop. By linearly sweeping the driving frequency of the AOM, the environmental variation around each FBG sensor can be determined by measuring the spectrum of the interference signals of the two counterpropagating light beams reflected by the corresponding FBG. The system has the advantages of low cost and real-time sensing.

Abstract:Dual-comb multiheterodyne spectroscopy is a well-established technology for the highly sensitive real-time detection and measurement of the optical spectra of samples, including gases and fiber sensors. However, a common drawback of dual-comb spectroscopy is the need for a broadband amplitude-resolved absorption or reflection measurement, which increases the complexity of the dual comb and requires the precise calibration of the optical detection. In the present study, we present an alternative dispersion-based approach applied to fiber Bragg grating sensors in which the dual comb is compacted by a single dual-drive-unit optical modulator, and the fiber sensor is part of a dispersion interferometer. The incident dual comb samples a few points in the spectrum that are sensitive to Bragg wavelength changes through the optical phase. The spectra reading is improved due to the external interferometer and is desensitized to changes in the amplitude of the comb tones. The narrow-band detection of the fiber sensor dispersion changes that we demonstrate enables the compact, cost-effective, high-resolution multiheterodyne interrogation of high-throughput interferometric fiber sensors. These characteristics open its application both to the detection of fast phenomena, such as ultrasound, and to the precise measurement at high speed of chemical-/biological-sensing samples. The results with a low-reflectivity fiber Bragg grating show the detection of dynamic strain in the range of 215 nε with a 30 dB signal to noise ratio and up to 130 kHz (ultrasonic range).

Abstract:To improve the performance of FBG interrogation system ,a novel fiber Bragg grating sensor interrogation system based on a tunable fibe r Fabry-Perot (FFP) filter was demonstrated.Firstly,a reference fiber Bragg gra ting (FBG) was used as a wavelength reference element.By measuring the wavelengt h difference between reference FBG and sensor FBG,the drift of tunable FFP filte r’s cavity length was compensated.Secondly,a quadratic fit function wa s made with software based on experiment results.This function showed a good fit to the relationship between the displacement of PZT and control voltage.It was used to calculate the wavelength of the sensing FBG.In experiment,a strain of 0~ 1800 μe was applied to the sensing FBG and the maximum nonlinearity deviat ion of measured wavelength was 0.5%.Experiment results show that the measured er ror caused by the drift of FFP filter’s cavity length and PZT’ s nonlinearity is greatly reduced and a higher accuracy is obtained.

Abstract:A high speed quasi-distributed demodulation method based on the microwave photonics and the chromatic dispersion effect is designed and implemented for weak fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). Due to the effect of dispersion compensation fiber (DCF), FBG wavelength shift leads to the change of the difference frequency signal at the mixer. With the way of crossing microwave sweep cycle, all wavelengths of cascade FBGs can be high speed obtained by measuring the frequencies change. Moreover, through the introduction of Chirp-Z and Hanning window algorithm, the analysis of difference frequency signal is achieved very well. By adopting the single-peak filter as a reference, the length disturbance of DCF caused by temperature can be also eliminated. Therefore, the accuracy of this novel method is greatly improved, and high speed demodulation of FBGs can easily realize. The feasibility and performance are experimentally demonstrated using 105 FBGs with 0.1% reflectivity, 1 m spatial interval. Results show that each grating can be distinguished well, and the demodulation rate is as high as 40 kHz, the accuracy is about 8 pm.

Abstract:A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system based on a spectrum-limited Fourier domain mode-locking (SL-FDML) fiber laser is proposed. Multiple FBGs cascaded in a long fiber are utilized as both the sensors in the system and the wavelength-selected components in the SL-FDML fiber laser. Both wavelength-division multiplexing and spatial-division multiplexing techniques are demonstrated for interrogation of multiple FBGs by mapping the wavelength measurement to the time measurement and by adjusting the driving frequency of the SL-FDML fiber laser. The proposed FBG sensing system, employing techniques of the wavelength- and spatial-domain interrogation of multiple FBGs, can be used in remote and quasi-distributed multipoint sensing.

Abstract:In this article, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor interrogation technique based on an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO). The main components of the OEO loop in this proposed scheme contains an electro-optic modulator (EOM), a section of dispersive element, an electric filter, and a photodiode (PD). The reflection signal of the FBG sensor is functioning as the optical source of the OEO. The oscillating frequency of the OEO is determined by the overall time delay of the OEO loop. Due to the dispersive element in the loop, time delay of the OEO loop is a function of the OEO optical source wavelength. As a result, the wavelength change of the FBG can be converted into the oscillating frequency shift of the OEO. A proof-of-concept FBG based axial strain sensing experiment is carried out. The experimental results show that the frequency of the OEO generated microwave signals have a good linear relationship with the axial strain applied to the FBG. The sensitivity is about 58 Hz/με when using dispersion compensation fiber (DCF) with dispersion of -120 ps/(nm*km) as the dispersive medium and tracking the microwave signal with frequency near 2056.4 MHz, which is consistent with the theoretical calculation. The proposed method can also be applied to interrogate optical sensors based on detecting the wavelength change of the optical signals.

Abstract:We design a novel tunable interchannel dispersion-slope compensator using a single broad-band nonchannelized sampled fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with chirp in the sampling period. Tunability of the dispersion-slope can be achieved by stressing or heating the grating uniformly, which has a third-order time-delay variation with wavelength, thereby causing a second-order variation in dispersion. By using the equivalent-chirp method, i.e. by chirping the sampling function, we get the time-delay within -1(st) order Fourier reflection band and consequently realize dispersion slope compensator.

Abstract:A new dynamic-strain interrogation system based on a fiber Bragg grating(FBG) triangular filter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in this paper.Through a chirp in grating period and an apodization in index modulation,we fabricated a FBG triangular filter,and utilized this filter to demodulate the dynamic-strain signal of another wavelength-matched FBG sensor.By comparing with the results measured by a commercial strain-gauge,this system is proved to have a good performance in the measurement of dynamic strain.Since the system is compact and passive,it is able to be integrated as a portable demodulation module.

Abstract:A novel interrogation method for optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors has been proposed by converting the change of the FBG wavelength into the phase difference between two radio frequency (RF) signals. As a result, the beating-induced RF signal power changes with the FBG wavelength shift. This technique could be used for high speed FBG interrogation and, due to the use of a second FBG to produce the reference RF signal, temperature cross-sensitivity effect is compensated automatically. Theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration have been carried out. Performances of the FBG sensor interrogation scheme have been studied.

Abstract:The use of simpler and less bulky equipment, with a reliable performance and at relative low cost is increasingly important when assembling sensing configurations for a wide variety of applications. Based on this concept, this paper proposes a simple, efficient and relative low-cost fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogation solution using ultra-short FBGs (USFBGs) as edge filters. USFBGs with different lengths and reflection bandwidths were produced in silica optical fiber and in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microstructured polymer optical fiber (mPOF), and by adjusting specific inscription parameters and the diffraction pattern, these gratings can present self-apodization and unique spectral characteristics suitable for filtering operations. In addition to being a cost-effective edge filter solution, USFBGs and standard uniform FBGs in silica fiber have similar thermal sensitivities, which results in a straightforward operation without complex equipment or calculations. This FBG interrogation configuration is also quite promising for dynamic measurements, and due to its multiplexing capabilities multiple USFBGs can be inscribed in the same optical fiber, allowing to incorporate several filters with identical or different spectral characteristics at specific wavelength regions in the same fiber, thus showing great potential to create and develop new sensing configurations.

Abstract:A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogator is a scientific instrument that converts the wavelength change of FBG sensors into readable electrical signals. To achieve miniaturization and integration of FBG interrogator, we designed and fabricated a 36-channel array waveguide grating (AWG) on silica-based planar lightwave circuits (PLC) as a key device in a built FBG interrogation system. It is used to achieve continuous demodulation in C-band, while maintaining high resolution. This AWG has a 1.6 nm channel spacing, 3-dB bandwidth of 1.76 nm, non-adjacent channel crosstalk of −29.76 dB, and insertion loss of 3.46 dB. The dynamic range of the FBG interrogation system we built was tested to be 1522.4–1578.4 nm, with an interrogation resolution of 1 pm and accuracy of less than 1 pm in the dynamic range of 1523.16–1523.2 nm. The test results show that the FBG interrogation technology, based on AWG, can realize FBG wavelengths accurately demodulated, which has high application value in aerospace, deep sea exploration, and environmental monitoring, as well as other fields.

Abstract:A simple novel fiber Bragg grating interrogating system is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on interference of polarized mode.The essential part of the system is only comprised of a high birefringence fiber with fiber reflector and a fiber polarizer.The vibration micro-nano signals from 0.1 Hz to 7.9 kHz were picked up with fidelity.Measurements of dynamic strains with resolutions of 0.5nε/(Hz)~(1/2) were demonstrated.The results show that the system is suitable for wide frequency range,micro-nano range of dynamic strain detection.This system potentially offers a low-cost and high-performance solution for the interrogation of FBG sensor.

Abstract:A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing scheme based on the measurement of radio-frequency (RF) signal is presented for wireless sensing applications. A fiber ring combined with multiple sensing FBGs is proposed to form a microwave photonic notch filter based sensor module. With an additional FBG as a tunable reference element, the modulated RF signal in the sensor module is utilized to interrogate the wavelength shift of sensing FBGs. Preliminary experiments of the FBG sensor module on the strain measurement are demonstrated and show the effectiveness and flexibility of the sensing scheme.

Abstract:A planar lightwave circuit-based multi-channel arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is used as a critical part of the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) interrogation unit and designed to be integrated into the fiber grating sensing system. We designed and fabricated a high-performance, 40 channels AWG in the device, enabling whole C-band wavelength demodulation while maintaining high-measurement resolution. The AWG was designed to have 100-GHz channel spacing; the channel crosstalk was measured to be −45 dB. An AWG-based FBG interrogation system was built to analyze the characteristics of our unit. The testing result shows that our system has the capability of demodulating wavelength from 1526.438 to 1563.863 nm with wavelength accuracy within ±10 pm; the wavelength resolution is measured to be 1 pm. Our testing result confirms that an AWG-based FBG interrogator is an excellent choice for FBG sensing systems.
