Abstract:We present a novel scheme for ultrabroadband and omnidirectional perfect absorbers with compact multilayer film structure. Our proposed device shows an average absorption of similar to 98% over a wide range of wavelengths ranging from 400 to 2000 nm. The ultrabroadband characteristics are achieved with strongly overlapped optical resonances by designing a tandem structure composed of three absorptive materials, while the overall structure features a graded refractive index profile to obtain a wideband antireflection property. In addition to the high efficiency and ultrabroadband absorption, our perfect absorbers exhibit a great angular tolerance up to 60 degrees, which is attributed to not only relatively broad resonances but also negligible propagation phase shifts in ultrathin highly absorbing layers. Lastly, we explore the effect of the number of semiconductor-metal stacks on the performance of the absorber. The presented approach can have tremendous potential for various applications, such as solar-thermal energy harvesting, thermoelectrics, detection, and imaging.

Abstract:On page 480, spatially and spectrally resolved narrowband optical absorbers are presented by Q. Li and co-workers. The devices are based on 2D grating nanostructures with spatially and spectrally resolved narrow-band absorption. The transverse magnetic lattice mode supports both large wavelength-angle sensitivity and large absorption-angle sensitivity. The absorbers can be applied in devices for spatial optical measurement techniques with significantly reduced size and weight.

Abstract:Turning the surfaces of noble metals (metasurfaces) into black (highly absorptive) surfaces can be potentially applied in thermophotovoltaics, sensing, tailoring thermal emissivity, etc. Here we demonstrate an extremely broadband absorber for the 900-1600 nm wavelength range with robust high absorption efficiency. The inexpensive droplet evaporation method is implemented to create patterns of nanoparticles dispersed on a gold film spaced by a thin dielectric layer. The diversity of the complicated random stacking of the chemically synthesized gold nanorods is the major factor for the broad absorption band. Such a metamaterial absorber may pave the way for cost-effective manufacture of large-area black metasurfaces.

Abstract:We experimentally investigated near-perfect optical absorption in sandwich structures comprising a thin metallic film whose thickness is larger than the skin depth, a top dielectric layer and a truncated photonic crystal. Single and multiple near-perfect absorptions were realized by tuning the thickness of the top layer. Based on the electromagnetic field intensity distributions at the absorption wavelengths, single near-perfect absorption originated from the tunneling effect of the optical Tamm state, while multiple near-complete absorptions mainly originated from Fabry-Perot resonances. Additionally, the structures showed good one-way absorption properties. The experimental results agreed well with theoretical values. These structures may be important for the fabrication of single or multichannel perfect absorbers.

Abstract:We propose a simple structure of a metamaterial (MM) to achieve near-perfect narrowband absorption. This MM utilizes both a plasmonic antenna and its complimentary structure for trapping electromagnetic fields, without the use of a complete ground plate compared to conventional designs. The simple design opens a new possibility of engineering perfect absorbers that can be easily fabricated, and thus many potential applications in mid-infrared include thermal imaging, energy harvesting, localized biological sensing, optical tweezers, and laser beam shaping.

Abstract:This paper proposes a near-perfect absorption device based on a cross-shaped titanium nanostructure and a multilayered structure. The multilayered bottom structure consists of alternately SiO2 and Ti. The whole device is put on a TiN substrate. The coupling between cross-shaped titanium nanostructures, and that between the cross-shaped titanium nanostructure and bottom multilayer, can further enhance the absorption at some wavelength where most of the energy is reflected or passes through in the device with a single structure. According to the simulation results, the device presents a nearly perfect absorption in a wavelength range from 300 nm to 2000 nm. The average absorptance in the wavelength range from 500 nm to 1400 nm exceeds 96%. This paper also provides a new idea for realizing perfect absorption, which is extensively used in sensing, controllable thermal emission, solar energy harvesting solar thermo-photovoltaic devices, and optoelectronic metrology.

Abstract:In this paper, the absorptance of a broadband nearly perfect absorber, consisting of a metal surface covered by a rough Bi2Te3 layer, was measured and the optical properties of such a sample are calculated by using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The results show that the measured absorptance of a designed sample with a roughness of 794 nm is larger than 0.94 in the wavelength range of 380–1800 nm, which can also be validated and explained by the calculated results. However, the absorptance of the absorber is affected by the morphology of the Bi2Te3 layer, including the roughness and the bottom width of the Bi2Te3 nanostructures. It is shown that the calculated absorptance of the absorber increases with the increasing roughness of the Bi2Te3 layer made of sharp nanostructures (with increasing cross section in the direction of incident light) if the bottom width of the Bi2Te3 nanostructures is fixed. However, the absorptance of the absorber decreases with the increase of the bottom width of Bi2Te3 nanostructures for absorbers with the same roughness. The underlying mechanisms for perfect absorbers are owing to the slow-light effect and gradient index effect, which require tall nanostructures with suitable bottom width for the total absorption of electromagnetic (EM) waves in the solar wavelength range. Furthermore, different samples were fabricated by using an electrochemical reaction method, and the measured absorption properties of these samples are shown in good agreement with calculated results.

Abstract:In this study, we theoretically and experimentally investigated the perfect optical absorptance of a photonic heterostructure composed of a truncated all-dielectric photonic crystal (PC) and a thick metal film in the visible regions. The three simulated structures could achieve narrow-band perfect optical absorption at wavelengths of 500 nm, 600 nm, and 700 nm, respectively. Based on the measured experimental results, the three experimental structures achieved over 90% absorption at wavelengths of 489 nm, 604 nm, and 675 nm, respectively. The experimental results agreed well with the theoretical values. According to electromagnetic field intensity distributions at the absorption wavelengths, the physical mechanism of perfect absorption was derived from the optical Tamm state (OTS). The structure was simple, and the absorption characteristics were not significantly affected by the thickness of the thick metal layer, which creates convenience in the preparation of the structure. In general, the proposed perfect absorbers have exciting prospects in solar energy, optical sensor technology, and other related fields.

Abstract:The broadband perfect absorption of visible light is of great significance for solar cells and photodetectors. The realization of a two-dimensional broadband perfect absorber in the visible range poses a formidable challenge with regard to improving the integration of optical systems. In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a broadband perfect absorber in the visible range from 400 nm to 700 nm based on metasurface composite structures. Simulation results show that the average absorptance is ~95.7% due to the combination of the intrinsic absorption of the lossy metallic material (Au) and the coupling resonances of the multi-sized resonators. The proposed perfect absorber may find potential applications in photovoltaics and photodetection.

Abstract:Metamaterial absorbers open a new door for the design of optical harvesting devices ranging from the microwave to optical regimes. The top resonator in these structures is critical for the function of metamaterial absorbers. The resonant frequency, bandwidth, and maximum absorption mainly depend on the choice of material, shape, and size of the top resonator. The maximum absorption is generally impaired as the size of the resonator changes, due to the high sensitivity of impedance matching with the medium. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a metamaterial perfect absorber with unabated absorption as its resonator's size changes. The perfect absorber is based on an array of metal squares inscribed with a hollow square. The absorption maxima stay above 98% as the size changes from 600 to 1500 nm in the mid-infrared region, agreeing with simulated results yielding an absorption of ~100%. The unabated absorption properties can be interpreted by the equivalent circuit theory. Moreover, the experimental absorption remains above 91% for incident angles change up to 50°, both for TE and TM polarization. Our work offers a method for achieving stable perfect absorption in sensing, filtering, and selective thermal emission.

Abstract:We fabricate a three-layer metamaterial of metal patterns/dielectric/metal films. The optical properties associated with Fano resonance of the metamaterials are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The results indicate that the introduction of Fano resonance due to symmetry breaking leads to a much wider absorption range. Furthermore, the amplitude and phase of reflection can be modulated effectively by adjusting various free parameters using the proposed structure.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a dual-band metamaterial absorber at normal incidence based on a five-layer metal-insulator-metal (MIM) stacked structure. The designed structure exhibits two peaks with over 95% absorption efficiency in the visible region. The physical mechanism of two absorption peaks is systematically investigated by the anti-symmetric and symmetric modes in the multilayer structure. As demonstrated in the calculation and experiment, two absorption peaks demonstrate well scalability with the change of structure periodicity. We envision this nearly perfect absorber would find great potential in the high performance photovoltaics and thermal emitter devices. Abstract:Due to the problems that the metal pattern layer on the top of the traditional metamaterial structure is easy to be oxidized and easy to fall off, in this paper, a novel semiconductor metamaterial nanostructure composed of a periodic array of GaAs-SiO2 cubes and a gold (Au) film has been proposed. Using FDTD solutions software to prove this metamaterial structure can achieve ultranarrow dual-band, nearly perfect absorption with a maximum absorbance of 99% and a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) value that is less than 20 nm in the midinfrared region. The refractive index sensitivity is demonstrated by changing the background index and analyzing the absorption performance. It had been proved that this absorber has high sensitivity (2000/RIU and 1300/RIU). Using semiconductor material instead of the metal material of the top pattern layer can effectively inhibit the performance failure of the metamaterial structure caused by metal oxidation. The proposed narrow, dual-band metamaterial absorber shows promising prospects in applications such as infrared detection and imaging.
A Perfect Metamaterial Absorber

Abstract:We present the design for an absorbing metamaterial element with near unity absorbance. Our structure consists of two metamaterial resonators that couple separately to electric and magnetic fields so as to absorb all incident radiation within a single unit cell layer. We fabricate, characterize, and analyze a metamaterial absorber with a slightly lower predicted absorbance of 96%. This achieves a simulated full width at half maximum (FWHM) absorbance of 4% thus making this material ideal for imaging purposes. Unlike conventional absorbers, our metamaterial consists solely of metallic elements. The underlying substrate can therefore be chosen independently of the substrate's absorptive qualities and optimized for other parameters of interest. We detail the design and simulation process that led to our metamaterial, and our experiments demonstrate a peak absorbance greater than 88% at 11.5 GHz.

Abstract:Due to its unique advantage of optical properties, nanophotonic metamaterials have gained extensive applications in perfect absorbers. However, achieving both dual-band and ultra-narrow linewidth in absorbers simultaneously remains a challenge for typical metal-dielectric based metamaterials. In this work, a dual-band ultra-narrow perfect absorber consisting of a double slotted silicon nano-disk array that located on a silver film with a silica spacer layer is proposed theoretically. By combining the hybrid mode excited by the coupling of diffraction wave mode and magnetic dipole mode with the anapole-anapole interaction, two absorption peaks can be induced in the near-infrared regime, achieving nearly perfect absorbance of 99.31% and 99.61%, with sub-nanometer linewidths of 1.92 nm and 1.25 nm respectively. In addition, the dual-band absorption characteristics can be regulated by changing the structural parameters of the as-proposed metamaterials. The as-designed metamaterials can be employed as efficient two-channel refractive index sensors, with a sensitivity and figure of merit of 288 nm/RIU and 150 RIU-1 for the first band, and a sensitivity and figure of merit of up to 204 nm/RIU and 163.2 RIU-1 for the second band. This work not only opens up a new design idea for the realization of dual-band perfect absorber synchronously with ultra-narrow linewidth, but also provides potential attractive candidates for developing dual-frequency channel sensors.

Abstract:In recent years, with the research of metamaterial structure absorbers and the concept of plasma perfect absorber, the perfect absorbers have developed from single-band absorption to multi-band absorption, broadband absorption, and narrow-band absorption. At present, in order to achieve a wider band, great efforts have been made to develop absorbers using multi-layer structures and nanostructured designs. However, the preparation and processing process such as Electron Beam lithography, Interference Lithography, Nanoimprint Lithography, etc., are too complicated and manufacturing costs are high, resulting in the difficulty of large-area preparation. It will seriously limit the practical application of broadband perfect absorber. In addition, multi-band perfect absorbers in the ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared regions are rare and suffer from a lack of bandwidth, while the application of broadband perfect absorbers in solar cells, cloaking technology, detection and sensing has become an urgent problem. Therefore, the design and implementation of broadband perfect absorbers that can be manufactured in a simple way for mass production has become a hot topic of research. Based on the advanced theory of artificial metamaterials and the principle of impedance matching, a MIM structured broadband perfect absorber based on an array of nanospheres has been designed. The absorber consists of an array of nanospheres with a metal-medium-metal structure, which enables ultra-broadband perfect absorption. The metal materials of the absorber are platinum (Pt) and gold (Au), the media material is aluminum oxide (Al2O3). The absorption spectrum and electromagnetic field energy distribution of the absorber, as well as the influence of the incidence angle and cell structure size on the absorption performance, were studied and analyzed by COMSOL Multiphysics. Numerical calculations show that the absorber has an average absorption of more than 95% in the visible-near infrared range (400-1400nm). The broadband absorption is achieved by a combination of modes, mainly surface plasmon and Fabry-Perot resonance. This absorber can replace the micro and nano processing process with self-assembly technology, which can achieve low cost, high efficiency, broad bandwidth and large area fabrication.

Abstract:Mid-infrared (IR) perfect absorbers have great potential in practical applications such as biomedical sensing and thermal energy and have been successfully demonstrated in a number of plasmonic metallic nanostructures. However, all the experimental realizations of perfect absorbers are strongly dependent on nanofabrication techniques, which usually require high costs and a long time to fabricate a wafer scale device. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a wafer scale, polarization independent, wide angle, and dual-band IR perfect absorber. By fabricating double "E"-shaped metallic structures on a ZnSe coated gold film, a dual-band metamaterial absorber has been uniformly realized on a 2'' silicon wafer. Two absorption peaks have been realized at 18 and 27 THz, which are well consistent with the designs. We believe that our research will boost the applications of metamaterial perfect absorbers.

Abstract:We demonstrate that the metamaterial perfect absorber behaves as a meta-cavity bounded between a resonant metasurface and a metallic thin-film reflector. The perfect absorption is achieved by the Fabry-Perot cavity resonance via multiple reflections between the "quasi-open" boundary of resonator and the "closed" boundary of reflector. The characteristic features including angle independence, ultra-thin thickness and strong field localization can be well explained by this model. With this model, metamaterial perfect absorber can be redefined as a meta-cavity exhibiting high Q-factor, strong field enhancement and extremely high photonic density of states, thereby promising novel applications for high performance sensor, infrared photodetector and cavity quantum electrodynamics devices.
