Abstract:Abstract The K–T mass extinction event occurred at the end of the Cretaceous System (K, for kreta or chalk, a common Cretaceous rock type) and the beginning of the Tertiary System (T), when approximately 40–75% of marine invertebrate species became extinct as a result of climate changes brought about by a sharp fall in global sea level, a major episode of continental flood basalt volcanism, and a large bolide (asteroid or comet) impact.
