And the technology of multi-parameters measurement at the same time with one fiber-grating sensor is explained. The discrimination techniques for cross-sensitivity of temperature and strain have been discussed in detail. The multi-parameter sensing head configurations involving fiber-grating devices have been overviewed and sorted. Novel multi-functional fiber grating sensing systems have been proposed and analyzed.

Abstract:A fibre-optic strain sensor based on a gourd-shaped joint multimode fibre (MMF) sandwiched between two single-mode fibres (SMFs) is described both theoretically and experimentally. The cladding layers of the two MMFs are reshaped to form a hemisphere using an electrical arc method and spliced together, yielding the required gourd shape. The gourd-shaped section forms a Fabry-Perot cavity between the ends of two adjacent but non-contacting multimode fibres' core. The effectiveness of the multimode interference based on the Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) formed within the multimode inter-fibre section is greatly improved resulting in an experimentally determined strain sensitivity of -2.60 pm/με over the range 0-1000 με. The sensing characteristics for temperature and humidity of this optical fibre strain sensor are also investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, an optical fiber sensor is realized with multi-parameter measurement, including magnetic field, temperature and displacement. Then, the implementation of the three-parameter independent measurement was performed. Among of them, one of fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) is coated giant magnetostrictive particle composite (GMPC) to measure the magnetic field, another FBG is used to measure displacement, and a micro-nano fiber structure of single mode fiber (SMF)-tapering seven core fiber (T-MCF-7)-SMF (S-TM7-S) is applied to measure temperature. Further, the GMPC concentration with the best sensitivity and the best seven-core fiber length were finally selected to form the sensing unit for simultaneous detection of the three parameters. The optical fiber sensor has potential applications for measuring magnetic field environments and system temperatures in high-voltage systems, engineering quality monitoring, as well as circuit safety monitoring.

Abstract:An optical fiber temperature and strain fiber sensor based on the few-mode fiber (FMF) and the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed and demonstrated. The sensor unit is fabricated by a length of FMF offset splicing with one section of single-mode fiber (SMF). The temperature and strain are measured simultaneously because of the different sensitivities of the spectrum dips. The interference with the highest extinction ratio of 23 dB can be achieved. The temperature sensitivities of -34.3 pm∕°C and 10.7 pm∕°C and strain sensitivities of -2 pm∕με and 0.67 pm∕με are achieved, respectively. The proposed sensor may exhibit the great potential in fields of the dual-parameter measurement due to its compact structure, simple configuration.

Abstract:A novel multiparameter fiber-optic sensor based on a femtosecond laser micromachined random grating is proposed and demonstrated to realize simultaneous measurement of temperature, axial strain, and surrounding refractive index. A wavelength-division spectral cross-correlation algorithm is adopted to extract the phase variation induced spectral shift responding to different external disturbances. Sensitivities of 10.32 pm/degrees C, 1.24 pm/mu epsilon, and -1520.6 pm/RIU were achieved for temperature, axial strain, and surrounding refractive index, respectively. The fiber random grating without phase mask fabrication and high physical strength is an excellent alternative aiming at simple and compact multifunctional fiber sensors. Abstract:This paper proposes a no-core-single-mode-no-core Mach-Zehnder fiber sensor. In this sensor, two no-core fibers serve as input and output couplers, and the middle single-mode fiber serves as a sensing arm. Using finite element simulation and theoretical analysis, the optimal length of the couplers and the sensing arm are determined. High-order modes excited by no-core optical fiber propagate through the cladding of the single-mode fiber, which is affected by the ambient temperature and applied force. The trough of different interference orders of the transmission spectrum is selected as a research object to realize the measurement of curvature and temperature, strain and temperature with the sensing matrix.

The theoretical analysis of the novel device is given based on a compound coupled mode theory. Abstract:We propose a method for simultaneous measurement of strain, temperature, and surrounding refractive index (SRI) using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed in dual-mode fiber by femtosecond laser. This FBG not only possesses two Bragg resonances corresponding to LP01 and LP11 modes, respectively, but also shows many strong cladding mode resonances, which are sensitive to SRI. Due to the different responses, the strain, temperature, and SRI can be discriminated simultaneously by measuring the two Bragg resonance wavelengths and the normalized area of cladding mode resonances. The estimated resolutions of this FBG in measuring strain, temperature, and SRI are +/- 6.3 mu epsilon, +/- 0.8 degrees C, and +/- 2.7 x 10(-5) RIU, respectively.

Abstract:A multi-parameter sensor based on dumbbell-shaped double-cladding fiber (DCF) structure cascaded long period fiber grating (LPFG) is proposed and fabricated. It is formed by discharging between single mode fiber (SMF) and DCF to form a waist-enlarged taper and then cascading two LPFGs. When the fiber is affected by the thermal expansion effect, thermo-optic effect and elasto-optic effect, the resonant peaks formed by inter-mode interference will shift, and the shifts generated by different resonant peaks are also different. By demodulating the wavelength shift of the three resonant peaks, the temperature, refractive index and axial strain can be measured by using the coefficient sensitivity matrix. The experimental results show that the temperature sensitivity of the three resonance peaks is 14.79 pm/°C, 69.07 pm/°C and 89.83 pm/°C in the range of 25 °C~80 °C. The refractive index sensitivities of three resonance peaks are 14.27 nm/RIU, −71.39 nm/RIU and −141.07nm/RIU in the range of 1.3355 ~ 1.3715. The axial strain sensitivities of three resonance peaks are −2.26 pm/ , −2.5pm/ and −3.14 pm/ in the range of ~ . The corresponding resolutions are 0.6905 °C, 0.00054RIU and , respectively. The sensor is simple and has good linearity. It can be widely used in environmental monitoring for different parameter.

Abstract:We propose a unique few-mode fiber (FMF)-based multi-parameter optical-fiber sensor for distributed measurement of temperature and strain. We launch a pump and a probe signal through specific linearly polarized modes into a FMF, and monitor the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) in each mode. By analyzing the temperature and strain coefficients of the BFS of the two lowest order (LP(01), LP(11)) modes, discrimination of temperature and strain are successfully demonstrated, with an accuracy of 1.2°C and 21.9 με.

Abstract:A supermode Bragg grating inscribed in a strongly coupled seven-core fiber (SCF) for multi-parameter sensing is proposed and demonstrated. There are two Bragg resonance notches observed in the transmission spectrum, corresponding to HE11-like and HE12-like supermodes of the SCF. Since the SCF is spliced between two standard single mode fibers with central alignments at both ends, the transmission spectrum of the device also contains an interferometric profile due to the Mach-Zehnder interference of the supermodes. The responses of the device to temperature and strain are experimentally characterized, respectively. The interference spectrum and the grating spectrum exhibit different responses to strain and temperature. This device is potentially useful for simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain.

Abstract:We propose what we believe to be a novel long-period fiber grating (LPFG) based on a polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) and single-mode fiber. Due to the principal axis of stress, the resonance peak is strongly dependent on the polarization state of the input light. Under different polarization states, the response of the resonance peak to the change of the external environment is different. A single resonance peak can measure several physical quantities without wavelength overlap using polarization multiplexing. The experimental results show that the PMF-LPFG realizes a high sensitivity torsion and bending measurement under different polarization states (-3.27 nm/rad*m and -13.38 nm/m) and can also measure the ambient temperature (84.10 pm/°C). The PMF-LPFG unit has the advantages of small size, high sensitivity, and multi-parameter measurement. The design scheme of the sensor provides a new idea for a multi-parameter sensor.

Abstract:Two novel configurations of multi-parameter fiber-optic sensing systems based on the fiber random grating are reported. The fiber random grating is fabricated through femtosecond laser induced refractive index modification over a 10cm standard telecom single mode fiber. In one configuration, the reflective spectrum of the fiber random grating is directly detected and a wavelength-division spectral cross-correlation algorithm is adopted to extract the spectral shifts for simultaneous measurement of temperature, axial strain, and surrounding refractive index. In the other configuration, a random fiber ring laser is constructed by incorporating the random feedback from the random grating. Numerous polarization-dependent spectral filters are formed along the random grating and superimposed to provide multiple lasing lines with high signal-to-noise ratio up to 40dB, which enables a high-fidelity multi-parameter sensing scheme by monitoring the spectral shifts of the lasing lines. Without the need of phase mask for fabrication and with the high physical strength, the random grating based sensors are much simpler and more compact, which could be potentially an excellent alternative for liquid medical sample sensing in biomedical and biochemical applications.

Abstract:An asymmetrical thin-core long-period fiber grating (ATC-LPFG) cascaded with an inline Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for dual-parameter sensing has been demonstrated. In addition, bending direction is also determined at the same time. A section of thin-core fiber (TCF) is fusion spliced between two single-mode fibers (SMFs). ATC-LPFG is 4 cm away from the first splicing point to form an inline MZI. The transmission spectrum consists of four dominant resonant wavelengths generated by multimode interference and loss peaks of ATC-LPFG. Two resonant wavelengths are the main loss peaks of ATC-LPFG, and additional two resonant wavelengths are caused by multimode interference. Bending direction is determined by former two resonant wavelengths; curvature and temperature sensitivities are measured by the resonant wavelength of multimode interference and ATC-LPFG. Cross sensitivity can be overcome because the resonant wavelength is generated by different mechanisms. The experimental results indicate that the sensitivities of curvature and temperature are 28.82 dB/m-1 and 67.3 pm/°C, respectively.

Abstract:We present a multiple parameter integrated fiber sensor that can detect vector bending and ambient temperature simultaneously with a single asymmetric multimode fiber Bragg grating. Multimode Bragg gratings were fabricated in an all-silica core fiber by an infrared femtosecond laser, which showed multiple transmission dips in the transmission spectrum. Bending and ambient temperature fluctuations affect the shapes of multiple transmission dips in different ways. In bending, different dips have different sensitivities. On the other hand, temperature fluctuations tended to influence the dips uniformly across different dips. By analyzing the changing spectrum of dips, one can distinguish the changes induced by bending or temperature fluctuations. Furthermore, the high thermal stability of Bragg gratings inscribed by an infrared femtosecond laser can make this double parameter fiber sensor work in very harsh, high-temperature environments.

Abstract:In this paper, a multi-parameter optical fiber sensor based on all-fiber in-line single-mode-multimode-no-core-single-mode (SMNS) structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A section of multimode fiber (MMF) is utilized as the mode coupler to enhance the multimode interference (MMI). A 58.5mm long no-core fiber (NCF) acts as the sensing head, which is modified by the surrounding medium. The experimental results exhibit that the sensor possesses a water level sensitivity of 215.98pm/mm by monitoring the wavelength shift at 1586.03nm, and −0.11dB/mm of the power attenuation at the wavelength of 1600.05nm with a measurement range of 58.33mm. At the same time, the RI sensitivities of 131.71nm/RIU and the axial strain sensitivity of −1.21pm/µε are also obtained.

Abstract:With the rapid development of optical fiber sensor in physical measurement, it is of practical significant to realize multi -parameter measurement. In this work, we proposed and demonstrated a multiparameter sensor for curvature, torsion and temperature. The sensor is formed from CO 2 laser -inscribed long -period grating (LPG) in fewmode ring -core fiber (RCF), which can convert fundamental mode to LP 11 mode. One -side inscription enhances asymmetric index modulation in fiber, resulting in directionally sensitive to bend by intensity interrogation. The curvature sensitivities in various bending directions perform linearity in curvature range of 5 - 9.466 m -1 . Curvature sensitivities are related to the bending directions. The intensity sensitivity achieves - 0.584 dB/m -1 , 0.879 dB/m -1 , and - 0.735 dB/m -1 , respectively. And torsion sensitivity from -6.98 rad/m to 6.98 rad/m displays linearity with -0.554 dB/(rad/m). The measured influence of temperature can be negligible. The proposed RCF-LPG could not only be used as high -efficiency mode converter in mode division multiplexing systems but also be potential in few -mode fiber based multiparameter sensing fields.

Abstract:A novel two-parameter fiber sensor has been demonstrated, consisting of D-shaped composite fiber gratings (DCFG) which includes long period fiber grating (LPFG) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed on D-shaped fiber. LPFG is inscribed on the side of D-shaped fiber by a high-frequency CO2 laser. On account of the asymmetry of the structure in 90° and 270° and refractive index modulation (RIM) in 0° and 180°, the sensor can recognize the bending directions. In the theory, it is proved that by adjusting the thickness of D-shaped fiber, the bending sensitivity can be enhanced in 90° and 270° directions. In the experiments, the fiber sensor achieves the sensitivity of curvature up to 13.70 nm/m−1, which is nearly two times as the similar structure without D-shaped fiber. The curvature and temperature sensitivities of LPFG and FBG are different in DCFG, so the proposed sensor can realize simultaneously measurement of curvature vector and temperature.
