Abstract:The high-pressure behavior of SnI2 has been investigated in a combined experimental and theoretical study by angle-dispersive X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering measurements, and ab initio calculations. Both the Raman and XRD results confirm that the SnI2 crystal undergoes a gradual crystal to amorphous transition and subsequently recrystallizes to a new crystal structure upon compression. The intensity of the Sn-I symmetric stretching mode greatly decreases and manifests a red shift at 2.15 GPa in Raman spectra. The XRD patterns show a bonding break phenomenon before the pressure-induced amorphization. We propose that the bond breaking between neighboring layers leads to the formation of the amorphous phase under high pressure. The sample recrystallizes into a new high-pressure crystal phase at 33.18 GPa. The experimental and theoretical results provide a good candidate structure for the recrystallized phase with C2/m space group.

In this study, we investigated the effect of pressure on the crystal structure of Mn3Sn.In-situhigh-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments revealed that Mn3Sn maintained hexagonal lattice symmetry within the pressure range of ambient to 50.4 GPa. The ratio of lattice constantsc/ais almost independent of the pressure and remains constant at 0.80, indicating a stable cell shape. Density functional theory calculations revealed the strong correlation between the crystal structure and the localization ofdelectrons. The Mn3Sn has been found in flat energy bands near the Fermi level, exhibiting a large density of states (DOS) primarily contributed by thedelectrons. This large DOS near the Fermi level increases the energy barrier for a phase transition, making the transition from the hexagonal phase to the tetragonal phase challenging. Our results confirm the structural stability of Mn3Sn under high pressure, which is beneficial to the robustness of spintronic devices.

Abstract:The high-pressure behavior of SnBr4 has been explored by angle dispersive X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, optical absorption/transmission measurements, and ab initio calculations. The joint of experimental and theoretical results shows that there is a crystal-crystal transition induced by molecular dimerization, which begins at similar to 10.8 GPa and completes at 21.5 GPa. Above 21.5 GPa, the gradual crystal-amorphous transition induced by the molecular dissociation appears, and the sample remains in partial amorphous state up to 43.8 GPa. At similar to 40.3 GPa, the possible insulator-metal transformation is discovered by in situ optical transmission measurements. It is proposed that the observed amorphous phase is a nonmolecular phase by theoretical calculations.

Abstract:Layered SnAs-based Zintl compounds exhibit a distinctive electronic structure, igniting extensive research efforts in areas of superconductivity, topological insulators and quantum magnetism. In this paper, we systematically investigate the crystal structures and electronic properties of the Zintl compound SrSn2As2 under high-pressure. At approximately 20.8 GPa, pressure-induced superconductivity is observed in SrSn2As2 with a characteristic dome-like evolution of Tc. Theoretical calculations together with high pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy have identified that SrSn2As2 undergoes a structural transformation from a trigonal to a monoclinic structure. Beyond 28.3 GPa, the superconducting transition temperature is suppressed due to a reduction of the density of state at the Fermi level. The discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity, accompanied by structural transitions in SrSn2As2, greatly expands the physical properties of layered SnAs-based compounds and provides a new ground states upon compression.

Abstract:The relatively low-pressure layered hexagonal Li3B2 (h-Li3B2) phase under 20GPa was identified on the basis of ab initio calculations. Inspired by the high-temperature superconductivity of metallic hydrogen, this study obtained a novel hexagonal Li2B2H (h-Li2B2H) structure by replacing Li-2 with H. Contrast to h-Li3B2, h-Li2B2H may be directly synthesized by -LiB and H-2 under pressure. The two phases exhibited electronic features similar to those in MgB2 and were expected to be good superconductors. Electron-phonon coupling calculations illustrated that the layered h-Li3B2 structure is superconducting at 2K with =0.39 under 20GPa. Moreover, h-Li2B2H was predicted to possess a large electron-phonon coupling parameter of approximately 0.81 and a resulting superconducting critical temperature about 28K at 20GPa. The introduced H in the h-Li2B2H structure had strong vibrational energy due to its light atomic mass and could enhance the energy of sigma and bonds by bonding with Li. Thus, the introduced H in the h-Li2B2H structure is important due to its enhanced electron-phonon coupling and superconducting property.

Abstract:The structural modifications of SnO within the tetragonal phase (alpha-SnO) and the orthorhombic phase (gamma-SnO) with pressure were extensively studied by using the first-principles pseudopotential plane-wave method within the generalized gradient approximation. A structural phase transition from alpha-SnO to gamma-SnO is predicted at 1.1 GPa by evaluating the enthalpy difference of the two crystal structures. During the transition, the volume changes continuously with increasing pressure, and a linear increase of the spontaneous strain is predicted. These facts indicated the second-order nature of this phase transition. Moreover, the pressure dependences of the Raman shift for both a-SnO and. SnO structures are presented to show further evidence for the phase transition. A softening B-1g mode with pressure is suggested to be the physically driven force of the transition. The current theoretical results strongly suggest the existence of gamma-SnO phase in SnO under high pressure.

Abstract:In situ high-pressure angle dispersive x-ray diffraction experiments using synchrotron radiation on inverse spinel structure Zn2SnO4 nanowires were carried out with a diamond anvil cell at room temperature. The crystal symmetry becomes lower at around 12.9 GPa and an intermediate phase with an orthorhombic structure occurs. At about 32.7 GPa, a phase transition occurs accompanying a high-pressure phase. In situ Raman scattering investigation was also performed to explore the phase transition. In the pressure range 15.5–32.8 GPa, the intermediate phase is also detected and a high-pressure phase is observed above 32.8 GPa. The high-pressure phase is considered to possess the ambient pressure structure of CaFe2O4.

Abstract:Solid H2S as the precursor for H3S with incredible superconducting properties under high pressure, has recently attracted extensive attention. Here in this work, we propose two new phases of H2S with P4(2)/n and I4(1)/a lattice symmetries in a pressure range of 0 GPa-30 GPa through first-principles structural searches, which complement the phase transition sequence. Further an ab initio molecular dynamics simulation confirms that the molecular phase P2/c of H2S is gradually dissociated with the pressure increasing and reconstructs into a new P2(1)/m structure at 160 GPa, exhibiting the superconductivity with T (c) of 82.5 K. Our results may provide a guidance for the theoretical study of low-temperature superconducting phase of H2S.
Unraveling Convoluted Structural Transitions in Snte at High Pressure

Abstract:The longstanding uncertainty in high-pressure structural evolution of SnTe has greatly impeded the understanding of its complex electronic properties. Here we unravel the convoluted high-pressure phase transitions of SnTe using angle-dispersive synchrotron X-ray diffraction combined with first-principles structural search. We identify three coexisting intermediate phases of Pnma, Cmcm, and GeS type structure and establish the corresponding phase boundaries. We further unveil the intricate pressure-driven evolution of the energetics, kinetics, and lattice dynamics to elucidate its distinct phase-transition mechanisms. These findings resolve structures of SnTe, which have broad implications for other IV-VI semiconductors that likely harbor similar novel high-pressure phases.

Abstract:The magnetic topological insulator EuSn2As2 is known to crystallize in a Bi2Te3-type layered structure in rhombohedral symmetry at ambient conditions and undergo a structural phase transition toward a monoclinic β phase under increasing pressure. Here, we identify by ab initio calculations a new high-pressure rhombohedral structure (termed the γ phase) in R3¯m symmetry comprising Sn-As-As-Sn linear chains along the z axis via the formation of As-As bonds in the AsSn/SnAs bilayers with strong anisotropic lattice distortion along the [001] orientation. This pressure-densified new rhombohedral phase has a metallic A-type antiferromagnetic ground state and is energetically more favorable than the original rhombohedral structure and the monoclinic β phase above 11 GPa. Simulated x-ray diffraction patterns provide an excellent match to the previously unexplained distinct diffraction peak around 14.7∘ found in experiments for EuSn2As2 above 13 GPa. These findings offer key insights into a new type of high-pressure phase of layered magnetic topological insulators, laying a foundation for further exploration of this intriguing class of materials.

Abstract:The layered crystal of EuSn$_2$As$_2$ has a Bi$_2$Te$_3$-type structure in rhombohedral ($R\bar{3}m$) symmetry and has been confirmed to be an intrinsic magnetic topological insulator at ambient conditions. Combining {\it ab initio} calculations and \emph{in-situ} x-ray diffraction measurements, we identify a new monoclinic EuSn$_2$As$_2$ structure in $C2/m$ symmetry above $\sim$14 GPa. It has a three-dimensional network made up of honeycomb-like Sn sheets and zigzag As chains, transformed from the layered EuSn$_2$As$_2$ via a two-stage reconstruction mechanism with the connecting of Sn-Sn and As-As atoms successively between the buckled SnAs layers. Its dynamic structural stability has been verified by phonon mode analysis. Electrical resistance measurements reveal an insulator-metal-superconductor transition at low temperature around 5 and 15 GPa, respectively, according to the structural conversion, and the superconductivity with a \textit{T}${\rm {_C}}$ value of $\sim 4$ K is observed up to 30.8 GPa. These results establish a high-pressure EuSn$_2$As$_2$ phase with intriguing structural and electronic properties and expand our understandings about the layered magnetic topological insulators.

Abstract:We investigated the synthesis and structural phase transition of a two-dimensional layered perovskitetype organic -inorganic hybrid compound, (cyclohexylmethylammonium)(2)SnI4. By systematic characterizations, we found that this compound undergoes a reversible first-order phase transition from the high temperature space group Cmca to the low-temperature space group P2(1)/c at around T-c= 319 K. Accompanying the phase transition, dielectric bistability was also detected. The phase transition is ascribed to the order-disorder transition of the cyclohexylmethylammonium cations. It is known, the interesting electronic and optical properties in the two-dimensional Sn(II) and Pb(II) halide perovskite structures are dominated by the inorganic part. The phase transition and related physical properties observed in this work arise from the organic parts. This will enrich the chemistry of the hybrid structures by tailoring the organic moieties, and accordingly, may lead to novel multifunctional materials such as ferroelectric materials. Abstract:There is great interest in the exploration of hydrogen-rich compounds upon strong compression where they can become superconductors. Stannane (SnH(4)) has been proposed to be a potential high-temperature superconductor under pressure, but its high-pressure crystal structures, fundamental for the understanding of superconductivity, remain unsolved. Using an ab initio evolutionary algorithm for crystal structure prediction, we propose the existence of two unique high-pressure metallic phases having space groups Ama2 and P6(3)/mmc, which both contain hexagonal layers of Sn atoms and semimolecular (perhydride) H(2) units. Enthalpy calculations reveal that the Ama2 and P6(3)/mmc structures are stable at 96-180 GPa and above 180 GPa, respectively, while below 96 GPa SnH(4) is unstable with respect to elemental decomposition. The application of the Allen-Dynes modified McMillan equation reveals high superconducting temperatures of 15-22 K for the Ama2 phase at 120 GPa and 52-62 K for the P6(3)/mmc phase at 200 GPa.

Abstract:The crystal structures, lattice dynamics, mechanical, electronic properties, and electron-phonon coupling of under environmental conditions and high pressures have been studied by merging first-principles calculations and particle-swarm optimization algorithm. Four structures are identified for , including the , , , and C2/m phases, in which the , , and C2/m phases are newly predicted. Their mechanical properties, including the Poisson's ratio sigma, the elastic anisotropy factor , and the Pugh's ratio have been calculated and discussed. The results show that the , , and phases of behave ductile nature, while the C2/m phase behaves brittle nature. Among them, the phase of almost exhibits completely anisotropic nature. Besides, our electronic band structure calculations show that the pressure-induced semiconductor-metal transition occurs following the to phase transition. Further, the electron-phonon coupling of the phase has been analyzed. The results we obtained are of significance to further understand the physical essence of and its practical engineering applications.
Evidence of Polymorphic Transformations of Sn under High Pressure

Abstract:The high-pressure polymorphs and structural transformation of Sn were experimentally investigated using angledispersive synchrotron x-ray diffraction up to 108.9 GPa. The results show that at least at 12.8 GPa β-Sn→bct structure transformation was completed and no two-phase coexistence was found. By using a long-wavelength x-ray, we resolved the diffraction peaks splitting and discovered the formation of a new distorted orthorhombic structure bco from the bct structure at 31.8 GPa. The variation of the lattice parameters and their ratios with pressure further validate the observation of the bco polymorph. The bcc structure appears at 40.9 GPa and coexists with the bco phase throughout a wide pressure range of40.9 GPa–73.1 GPa. Above 73.1 GPa, only the bcc polymorph is observed. The systematically experimental investigation confirms the phase transition sequence of Sn as β-Sn→bct→bco→ bco + bcc→bcc upon compression to 108.9 GPa at room temperature.
