Abstract:A facile method for constructing superhydrophobic, conductive, and transparent/translucent coatings is presented. Pristine multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) are first noncovalently (wrapped) modified by an organic inorganic hybrid of an amphiphilic copolymer of styrene and malcic anhydride and silica with the existence of gamma-aminopropyl-triethoxysilane (a silane coupling agent). The modified MWNTs were mixed with tetraethyl orthosilicate in ethanol, air sprayed, coated with a fluoroalkylsilane, and then heat treated to obtain the superhydrophobic, conductive, and transparent/translucent coatings. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the coatings have a micrometer- and nanometer-scale hierarchical structure similar to that flows leaves; therefore, they show both high water contact angles (>160 degrees) and low sliding angles (<2 degrees). The coatings also exhibit good transmittance and greatly improved conductivities. This method is convenient, inexpensive, and easy to scale up. Moreover, it does not require any chemical modification of the MWNTs or use any harsh chemicals.

Abstract:A new method for transforming common polymers into superhydrophobic conductive surfaces, with both a high static water contact angle (similar to 160 degrees) and a low sliding angle (2.0 degrees-4.5 degrees), and a low sheet resistance on the order of 10(1)-10(3) Omega/sq is presented. A layer of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) is first distributed on the surface of a polymer substrate, then by a single step of pressing, the MWNTs are partially embedded inside the substrate surface and form a superhydrophobic coating with a "carpet-" or "hair"-like morphology. The infiltration of polymer melts into the porous MWNT layer follows Darcy's law, and the pressing time greatly influence the morphology and superhydrophobicity. Moreover, the coating can be electrically heated by 20-70 degrees C with a voltage as low as 4-8 Vat an electric energy density below 1.6 J/cm(2) and therefore can be used for deicing applications. Hydroxylation and fluoroalkylsilane treatment can greatly improve the stability of the superhydrophobicity of MWNTs. This method is convenient and applicable to a variety of thermoplastic polymers and nonpolymer substrates coated by silicone rubber.

Abstract:Films of superhydrophobic multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been obtained by using alkyl-modified MWCNTs (MWCNT(COOC18H37)n) and a simple and effective preparation method. The films show both a high contact angle and a small sliding angle for water droplets. A particular characteristic is that on the superhydrophobic surface the alkyl-modified MWCNTs are not intentionally aligned, thus avoiding the preparation techniques using aligned carbon nanotubes to produce the same effect.
Multifunctional and fluorine-free superhydrophobic composite coating based on PDMS modified MWCNTs/ZnO with self-cleaning, oil-water separation, and flame retardant properties

Abstract:We introduce a simple, fluorine-free, inexpensive route to fabricate a stable superhydrophobic coating comprising Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)/ZnO composite modified with Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The MWCNTs/ZnO composite was prepared by a sol-gel method. The composite coating can be applied on various substrates using a simple dip-coating method to achieve superhydrophobicity. The wettability of composite coating was investigated by adjusting MWCNTs loading in the composite solution. The result indicates that 2.5 wt. % of MWCNTs in the PDMS modified MWCNTs/ZnO composite displayed excellent superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle of 156° and a sliding angle of 4°. The coating was applied onto the copper mesh to separate oil-water mixtures because of its unique superhydrophobic and superoleophilic property and shows the high efficiency of separation of over 95 % for different oils with outstanding reusability. Furthermore, coating shows excellent self-cleaning, anti-fouling properties and retained its superhydrophobicity against strong acidic/alkaline solutions, corrosive medium, and demonstrated long-term durability in the ambient environment. Importantly, the coating also displayed excellent flame retardant performance compared to the uncoated surface and still exhibited its water repellency property after combustion. The proposed facile, cost-effective and environmentally friendly technique can provide a new tool to design durable and scalable superhydrophobic materials with special properties in the near future.

Abstract:Abstract This paper reported a simple approach to prepare robust conductive/superhydrophobic coating. The hierarchical structure was obtained through the addition of microscale filler (graphite powder and expanded graphite) and nanoscale filler (carbon nanotube). The self-similar structure was obtained through bonding the fillers using the epoxy matrix. Through the combination of the hierarchical and self-similar structures, the as-prepared superhydrophobic coating demonstrated excellent anti-abrasion property, good conductivity, excellent self-cleaning performance in both oil and water environment, outstanding anticorrosive property, and superior thermal stability simultaneously. Moreover, this superhydrophobic coating was achieved by a simple casting method, which has the potential to be used in large scale production.

Abstract:To develop an effective and convenient solution for underwater repelling oil and cleaning up oily water, TiO2 nano‐coating is deposited on the surface of poly(propylene) nonwoven (PPN) by atomic layer deposition (ALD). There is no evident change in the morphologies comparing ALD‐modified PPN with PPN except for thickness. For oils of different densities, such as 1,2‐dichloroethane, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, n‐hexane, and petroleum ether, the underwater oil contact angle and underwater oil sliding angle of ALD‐modified PPN range from 152.25° to 156.19° and 5.63° to 8.80°, respectively, exhibiting superior superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. Notably, ALD‐modified PPN shows a high chemical stability in different solutions, such as acid, alkali, salt, and polar solvent, which even can slightly improve the underwater superoleophobicity of TiO2 nano‐coating. The excellent underwater anti‐oil property, self‐cleaning property, robust chemical resistance, and easily scaled‐up preparation process of TiO2‐coated PPN suggest great potential for practical applications in the energy, environmental protection, marine anti‐fouling, and microflow control fields.

Facile Fabrication of SWCNT Film-Based Superhydrophobic Cotton Fabrics for Oil/water Separation and Self-Cleaning

Abstract:With the increase of oily waste, oil-water separation has become an urgent and difficult task. However, the current challenge is to fabricate such efficient membrane materials for oil-water separation. Herein, super-hydrophobic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs)/cotton fabric (CF) was prepared via a dry process. In which the ultrathin SWCNT films with a low content of hydrophilic groups were prepared by a facile floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition method and directly deposited on CF without solvent dispersion. The ob-tained SWCNT@CF was further treated by 1 H,1 H,2 H,2 H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (POTS). Due to the synergistic effect of SWCNTs and POTS, the POTS-modified SWCNT@CF displayed excellent super-hydrophobicity with a water contact angle(WCA)of-163.3 degrees, and consequently can be further used as a membrane for oil-water separation. These superhydrophobic fabrics have high oil/water separation efficiency (99.2% for dichloromethane/water) and high oil flux (28.71 x103 L.m(-2).h(-1) for dichloromethane/water). Even after 25 separation cycles, oil/water separation efficiency and oil flux maintain 98.8% and 25.15 x 10(3) L.m-2.h-1, respectively. In addition, it exhibits high separation efficiency (-99%) for water-in-oil emulsion. Moreover, under extreme environmental conditions, the contact angle of the obtained POTS-modified SWCNT/ CF was maintained at-155 degrees, keeping stable superhydrophobicity. This reported preparation strategy of superhydrophobic fabrics is environmentally friendly, low cost, sustainable, and easy to scale up, thereby exhibiting great potential in practical applications.

Abstract:The superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membranes based on textile possessed excellent separation efficiency as well as outstanding anti-oil fouling property, while the poor stability caused by nanoparticle (NP) shedding had severely limited the practical application in oily water separation. In this paper, a feasible method of fabricating the robust membranes based on cotton fabric (CF), which was decorated with TiO2 NP and citric acid (CA) through micro-dissolution method, was reported. Firstly, the CF was slightly dissolved in the NaOH/Urea solution at low temperature, accelerating the destruction of the cellulose macromolecule on the superficial layers of the fabrics. Then, the vacuum filtration process promoted the TiO2 NP to distribute uniformly on the CF surface. In the subsequent coagulation process, the TiO2 NP were firmly anchored on the fabric surface because of self-glue effect of micro-dissolved CF. Finally, the esterification reaction between CA and CF was carried out to enhance the hydrophilic property of CF. The prepared membranes were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. Additionally, the separation performance and stability of membranes were systematically evaluated. The results of SEM indicated that the TiO2 NP were uniformly anchored on the membrane surface. Especially, the prepared membranes could not only separate traditional oil/water mixture but also treat complicated oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion with excellent separation efficiency. What’s more, the membranes could withstand various harsh condition and exhibit excellent application stability. In terms of separation performance and stability, the CA/TiO2 decorated cotton fabrics have the potential to be used in the practical oily water separation.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Functional superhydrophobic cotton fabrics find extensive applications in both textile and non-textile domains. Nonetheless, fabric treatment typically relies on fluorine-containing compounds, inorganic nanoparticles and potentially hazardous organic solvents, posing environmental risks during fabrication and disposal. To address this issue, endeavours are underway to develop environmentally sustainable and cost-effective methods and materials for imparting superhydrophobic properties to cotton fabric surfaces. Here, we prepared lignin nanoparticles (LNP) utilising deep eutectic solvents and facilitated their surface adhesion to cotton fabrics through the self-polymerisation of tannic acid (TA) under alkaline conditions for the construction of micro-/nanostructures on the fabric surface. Subsequently, methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) was employed to confer superhydrophobic properties to the fabrics using a combination of thermal chemical vapour deposition techniques, resulting in a contact angle of approximately 164.3° and a sliding angle of 8.52°. Owing to the combined effect of TA and LNP, the modified fabrics exhibited excellent ultraviolet (UV) shielding ability (UV transmittance < 1 %, UV protection factor = 50 + ) and photothermal conversion (54.2 °C in 150 s). In short, micro-/nanostructures with surface hydrophilicity were constructed on the surface of cotton fabrics using two hydrophilic biomaterials, i.e. TA, which is similar to polydopamine but lighter in colour and less expensive, and LNP as sustainable colloidal particles. Subsequently, their surface roughness was further enhanced, and superhydrophobic properties were imparted through modification with the low surface energy substance MTMS. This method not only promotes the high-value utilisation of lignin but also serves as a reference for constructing superhydrophobic structures using biomass hydrophilic materials on cellulose substrates. The prepared superhydrophobic fabric suggests potential applications in water and stain repellence, self-cleaning, outdoor UV protection and the management of marine oil spill pollution.

Abstract:A facile and mild dip-coating method of fabricating superhydrophobic coating for cotton textiles was proposed. Cotton fabric was treated with TiO2 sol prepared under mild conditions and subsequently dip-coated by fluoropolymer (PHM). The PHM was synthesized by copolymerization of hexafluorobutyl methacrylate (HFBMA) and 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) to replace long-chain fluoroalkylsilanes, which are costly and potentially harmful. The coated textile displayed wonderful superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 153.5°. Additionally, the stability of the coated textile was tested by placement in acidic and alkali solutions, ultrasonic processing, and washing, during which it exhibited desirable durability. Furthermore, the surface showed an excellent biomimetic self-cleaning effect of removing both liquid pollutant and solid powder stains. Importantly, the prepared textile exhibited efficient oil–water separation for its superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity. These advantages make it an ideal material for large-scale industrial applications under various conditions.

Abstract:Superhydrophobic materials have attracted widespread attention due to their unique anti-accretion performance to different contaminants. Over the years, numerous superhydrophobic surfaces have been designed and examined. However, most of them still suffer from the weaknesses of fragile mechanical durability and poor chemical stability, which present serious limitations to their practical applications. In this study, we prepared SiO2 particles in-situ grown on the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The CNTs@SiO2 composite particles were then modified with perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane and dispersed in thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix to obtain a superhydrophobic TPU/CNTs@SiO2 composite coating. Due to the multi-level micro/nanostructures of the CNTs@SiO2 particles and their strong bonding with TPU, the coating has excellent mechanical durability and maintains superhydrophobicity after sandpaper abrasion or tape peeling. In addition, the micro/nanostructures on the coating surface can trap air in the surface pores and thus has prevented the penetration of H+, Na+, Cl-, SO4 2- and OH− in liquids, leading to excellent chemical stability under extreme solution environment. The coating also has excellent self-cleaning and anti-fouling properties and expected to have great potentials in various industrial fields.

Abstract:Recently, varieties of inorganic nanoparticles including SiO 2 , TiO 2 and ZnO have been employed to construct superhydrophobic cotton fabrics. However, due to lack of covalent bonds between cotton fibers and nanoparticles, the inorganic nanoparticles on superhydrophobic fabric surfaces are easily fell off, severely shortening their service life during real-life applications. To address this issue, a new incorporating strategy is proposed to fabricate superhydrophobic fabrics by combing TiO 2 nanoparticles with Octa-[2-(carboxyl methyl thio) ethyl]-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane/polydimethylsiloxane (MAPOSS/PDMS) composite coating. Results show that the modified fabric exhibits excellent, robust and durable superhydrophobicity under various harsh conditions. Interestingly, the modified fabric shows excellent self-healing superhydrophobic capability by simple heating treatment even after being suffered from 200 abrasion cycles or 25 cycles of O 2 plasma etching. Meanwhile, the coated fabric also showcases superior self-cleaning property, excellent anti-fouling performance, high oil/water separation efficiency and outstanding UV-blocking capability. Most notably, the modified fabric still exhibits excellent UV-blocking stability after being abrased 200 cycles, and laundered 100 cycles. In addition, the mechanical and thermal properties of modified fabric are greatly improved without compromising its breathability. These findings will pave a way to develop advanced multifunctional textiles, envisioning broad application prospects in oil–water separation, UV-blocking textiles, life jackets, self-cleaning and self-healing fields in the future.

Abstract:In this study, superoleophobic and superhydrophilic fabrics with self-healing property have been prepared by the use of chitosan (CS), sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP), Capstone FS-60 (FS-60), and dopamine hydrochloride as coating materials. The coated fabrics show oil contact angle of 154° for soybean oil, and water droplets can be spread on the surface in 1 s. Notably, it is further demonstrated that the coating has self-healing property. After undergoing home laundering, Martindale abrasion, or acid/base etching, the fabrics lose their superoleophobic and superhydrophilic property, while they can restore the superoleophobic and superhydrophilic property by just being wetted with distilled water and then heated in an oven. Additionally, the coated fabrics prove effective in separating oil/water mixtures. These fabrics, endowed with superoleophobic and superhydrophilic property along with self-healing capability, present innovative features and applications across diverse fields.

Mussel inspired stable underwater superoleophobic cotton fabric combined with carbon nanotubes for efficient oil/water separation and dye adsorption

Abstract:Currently reported biobased superwetting cotton fabrics (CF) for wastewater purification were limited because they can only separate oil/water mixtures but cannot remove other pollutants such as dyes from wastewater. In this study, we reported a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic cotton fabric (SUSCF) which was fabricated via a facile two-step method, i.e., dip-coating in poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) wrapped carbon nanotube (CNT) dispersion and subsequent in-situ deposition of polydopamine (PDA). The deposited PDA particles and coated CNT endowed CF with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity by improving surface roughness and hydrophilicity. The obtained SUSCF showed an underwater oil contact angle of 160°, which made it an attractive water-removing material for oil/water separation with separation efficiency and water flux of higher than 99.8% and 10,834 L m -2 h -1 , respectively. The combination of CNT, PSS, and PDA endowed the SUSCF with outstanding cationic dye adsorption capacity, especially leading to a maximum removal ratio of 97% toward methylene blue. In addition, the SUSCF exhibited excellent stability to survive after exposure to sandpaper abrasion, boiling water, organic solvents, salt solution, and acidic/alkali erosion, due to the strong hydrogen bonds and mussel-inspired adhesion between coated components and fabric surface. The stable biobased underwater superoleophobic cotton fabric with integrated excellent oil/water separation performance and dye adsorption capacity shows great potential in wastewater purification even under some harsh conditions.

Abstract:The combination of photocatalysis and superamphiphobic cotton fabric has attracted extensive attention as it can not only repel the millimeter-scale contaminant droplets in daily life, but also photodegrade the micro-droplet pollutants with ultralow surface tension d in light. However, its invention is a great challenge. In this work, superamphiphobic cotton fabrics with photocatalysis and ultraviolet (UV) shielding property were fabricated based on fluorinated ZnO/halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) hybrid particles with micro/nano hierarchical structures and photocatalytic activity. The ZnO/HNTs hybrid particles were prepared by in-situ growth of ZnO nanoparticles on the surface of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) with unique needlelike microstructure, high aspect ratio, eco-friendliness, low cost, biocompatibility, and abundance in nature. The fluorinated ZnO/HNTs (F-ZnO/HNTs) based on ZnO/HNTs were sprayed onto cotton fabrics to obtain superamphiphobic cotton fabrics with ultraviolet (UV) shielding and photocatalysis. The as-obtained cotton fabrics could repel common liquids in daily life even with low surface tension (the rapeseed oil contact angle was 154.3 ± 0.9°), exhibiting excellent superamphiphobic self-cleaning and antifouling properties. About 89 % of methylene orange was degraded after being irradiated by UV lamp for 4 h, indicating that the coated cotton fabric had excellent photocatalytic activity. Importantly, after 1500 cycles of mechanical abrasion, 60 h UV illumination or1h of immersion in acidic and alkali solutions, the coated cotton fabrics retained superamphiphobic performance. Due to the synergistic effect of the superamphiphobic and photocatalytic performance, the obtained cotton fabrics showed potential applications in various promising fields.

Abstract:Self-cleaning cotton fabric with excellent amphiphobicity was fabricated by building micro-nanostructures with low surface energy on cotton fabric surface. TiO2 and SiO2 blend nanoparticles modified by hydrolytic (heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetradecyl)trimethoxysilane (17-FAS) were co-deposited onto cotton fabric by two different coating methods: 1) suction filtration for immobilizing the modified TiO2/SiO2 onto cotton fabric based on cellulose swollen action by N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) solution; 2) adhesion by spraying waterborne polyurethane (WPU) before coating. The performance of self-cleaning fabric was investigated by draping properties, air permeability, water-vapor transmission, tensile properties, abrasion resistance and washing fastness. The resultant self-cleaning fabric exhibited superhydrophobicity and excellent oleophobicity based on contact angles of 151.9° for water, 141.7° for liquid paraffin, 137.8° for epoxidized soybean oil and 133.1° for diesel oil, respectively. WPU method possessed better washing fastness and could keep high amphiphobic effect. WPU method is considered as a reliable and facile solution to amphiphobic fabric, showing great promise for industrial-scale respect in self-cleaning textiles.
Superhydrophobic Al2O3/MMT-PDMS Coated Fabric for Self-Cleaning and Oil-Water Separation Application

Abstract:This study introduces a novel superhydrophobic coating applied to the fabric surface through spray coating of the Al2O3/MMT nanocomposite and PDMS polymer to enhance the surface roughness and reduce the surface tension, respectively. The as-prepared coating exhibits a remarkable superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle (WCA) of ∼174.6° and a water sliding angle (WSA) < 5°. Notably, the fabric demonstrates a self-cleaning property through removing dust and dirt via adhering to water droplets. Moreover, the insignificant loss of WCA (3.2 and 1%) after exposure to alkaline and acidic media for 10 days verifies the promising chemical stability of the coated layer, whereas WCA > 160° after 24 h of immersion in various organic solvents further indicates the layer resistance. Besides, the layer sustains WCA of 174.5, 172.5, and 168.45° after 1 month of air exposure, ultrasonic washing, and 50 cycles of home laundry. The mechanical resistance of the fabric was verified by maintaining a WCA of 158.73° after 200 abrasion cycles. Also, the layer exhibits thermal resistance with <4.1% of WCA loss in the temperature range of -10 to 180 °C. Additionally, the superhydrophobic coating excels in oil-water separation, achieving >99% separation efficiency for various oils. These exceptional properties position the fabric for diverse applications, including protective clothing, outdoor gear, medical textiles, and sportswear, emphasizing its versatility and novelty in the realm of superhydrophobic materials.

Abstract:Immobilizing inorganic or organic particles on cotton fabric to increase the surface roughness, followed by coating with low surface reagents to reduce the surface energy, are the dominant strategies to prepare the superhydrophobic cotton surface. However, the inorganic or organic particles can easily fall off the surface of the fabrics. Thus, the surface roughness of the fabric could be reduced during the process, resulting in the poor durability of the superhydrophobic fabric. In this work, the surface of the cotton fabric was etched by cellulase. Following this, the treated fabric was grafted using a diblock copolymer (poly[(methyl methacrylate)-b-(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)] (PMMA-b-PDMAEMA)), which was synthesized following the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization process. The mist polymerization technology was used for the process. The coatings successfully endowed the cotton fabric with superhydrophobic properties. The maximum WCA value recorded was 159.9 °. The treated fabric exhibited excellent mechanical and chemical stability. Moreover, the modified cotton sample also exhibited good self-cleaning effects in the presence of solid dust and liquid contaminants. It also exhibited excellent oil-water separation properties. Therefore, the superhydrophobic fabric prepared using a combination of the etching method and mist polymerization technology can find its potential application in home and industrial areas.
