Abstract:A novel superhydrophobic and superoleophilic surface was fabricated by one-step electrodeposition on stainless steel meshes, and the durability and oil/water separation properties were assessed. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and optical contact angle measurements were used to characterize surface morphologies, chemical compositions, and wettabilities, respectively. The results indicated that the as-prepared mesh preformed excellent superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity with a high water contact angle (WCA) of 162 +/- 1 degrees and oil contact angle of (OCA) 0 degrees. Meanwhile, the as-prepared mesh also exhibited continuous separation capacity of many kinds of oil/water mixtures, and the separation efficiency for lubrication oil/water mixture was about 98.6%. In addition, after 10 separation cycles, the as-prepared mesh possessed the WCAs of 155 +/- 2 degrees, the OCAs of 0 degrees and the separation efficiency of 97.8% for lubrication oil/water mixtures. The as-prepared mesh also retained superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties after abrading, immersing in salt solutions and different pH solutions. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier B.V.
Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Copper Meshes Via Simply Soaking for Oil/ Water Separation

Abstract:A superhydrophobic copper mesh was prepared by a quick and straightforward two-step soaking operation to form the micro-nano coralline-like rough structure for oil/water separation. The modified copper mesh was characterized by SEM, EDS, FTIR, XRD, XPS, and WCAs. The obtained superhydrophobic copper mesh (WCA = 158.7°) showed excellent mechanical and chemical stability. The modified copper mesh also showed good self-cleaning ability and antifouling performance. The modified copper mesh showed excellent oil/water separation performance as reflected from its separation efficiency, separation flux, and reusability for colza oil, diesel oil, ethyl acetate, chloroform, and hexane oil/water mixtures with above 95% separation efficiency after 20 cycles of reuse. Due to low cost, time-saving, easy-to-prepare, and excellent separation performance, the superhydrophobic copper mesh would have a broad application prospect in oil/water separation.

Abstract:Environmentally friendly separation materials are essential for separating emulsified oil-water mixtures. The nylon membrane has been facilely converted into highly hydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic via a simple one-step co-deposition of polydopamine and chitosan-tripolyphosphate (CS-TPP) nanoparticles, wherein the CS-TPP particles were prepared by the ion gel method. The modified membrane exhibited excellent antifouling performance with the underwater oil contact Angle (UOCA) at 179.6 degrees. The prepared environmental CS-TPP@PDA@nylon membrane was characterized by SEM, EDS, FTIR, and XPS. The membrane could separate various oil-in-water emulsions in a wide range of average particle sizes (50.9-1832.0 nm). In addition, the CS-TPP@PDA@nylon membrane demonstrated high permeation flux (221.0-1770.5 L m(-2) h(-1)) and good regeneration ability. The flux could still maintain more than 89% even after fifteen cycles. The degradable modification materials and simple preparation process would highlight the potential of modified membranes in large-scale production and green oily wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The efficient treatment of oil-water emulsions under acidic condition remains a widespread concern. Poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer with hyperbranched structures and a large amount of primary and tertiary amino groups has exhibited advantages to solve this issue. Here, a novel poly(vinylidene fluoride)-graft-(SiO2 nanoparticles and PAMAM dendrimers) (PVDF-g-SiO2 NPs/PAMAM) membrane was fabricated using a surface-grafting strategy. SiO2 NPs were immobilized on PVDF-g-poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) membranes for improving the surface roughness, and PAMAM dendrimers were further immobilized on the membrane surface by interfacial polymerization (IP) for improving the surface energy. The obtained membrane demonstrated a water contact angle and a stable underwater-oil contact angle of 0 degrees and >150 degrees, respectively. These characteristics endowed the membrane with excellent water permeability [>3100 L/(m(2).h) at 0.9 bar] and separation efficiency (>99%) during oil-water separation. Furthermore, the PAMAM chain will extend from a collapsed state into a fully extension state because of the protonation of amine groups under acidic condition, thus achieving a low underwater oil-adhesion property, fouling resistance, desirable stability, and recyclability (over 12 cycles) during usage. This work shows a promising prospect for the treatment of corrosive emulsions under acidic condition.
One-step fabrication of coating-free mesh with underwater superoleophobicity for highly efficient oil/water separation

Abstract:Robustly superhydrophilic–underwater superoleophobic stainless steel meshes were fabricated via a simple and cost-effective one-step etching route. The obtained meshes show good underwater superoleophobicity not only in pure water but also in corrosive (acidic, alkaline and saline) aqueous solutions. Such special wettability allows water to permeate through the mesh while the oils are repelled on the mesh surface completely. The mesh can separate a series of oil/water mixtures under the gravity drive with high separation efficiency. Importantly, the etched meshes are capable of separating oil from acidic, alkaline and saline aqueous solutions, and the separation efficiency can reach above 94.3% after repeatedly separating toluene/corrosive water mixture for 16 cycles. In addition, the resulting mesh still possesses high underwater superoleophobicity with oil contact angle of 145° after the abrasion of 100 cycles. Thus, the etched mesh may be a potential candidate for practical oil/water separation applications.

Abstract:Recently, there is an urgent demand to remove oil and organic solvents with low surface tension from oily wastewater, which promotes the application of interface biomimetic materials in oil/water separation. In our work, a novel NiAl LDHs coated superhydrophobic and superoleophilic stainless steel mesh (SS-SSM) with efficient oil/water separation performance was successfully prepared. The 3D flower-like structure intercalated by LDHs monocrystalline flakes was anchored on metallic wires in urea solution by a hydrothermal method and decorated with low surface energy molecules. The as-prepared mesh exhibited perfect superhydrophobicity with water contact angle of 156° and sliding angle of 5°, thus achieving self-cleaning property. In addition, the separation efficiency for a series of oil/water mixtures of the coated mesh was studied, which was up to 98% for most sample oils. More importantly, even treated under severer conditions such as ultrasonic, abrasion and chemical etching solution, the as-prepared meshes possessed good reproducibility in terms of contact angles and separation efficiencies. It is expected that the designed mesh could provide a b brand-new method for superhydrophobic surface coating, making it a potential functional material for self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, fluid drag reduction and oil/water separation.

Abstract:It is difficult to separate oil-polluted water mixtures, which has been considered a global problem. In this study, a simple dip-coating process was used to produce a stainless-steel mesh coated with poly (malaic acid mono-(2-(dimethylamino)-ethyl ester-co-hydroxyethyl acrylate)-tetraethyl orthosilicate-silica (P(MDME-co-HEA)-TEOS-SiO2). The membrane's shape, chemical composition, separation capabilities, and mechanical properties were carefully examined. The membrane was extremely hydrophilic and extremely oil-phobic underwater due to its rough surface structure and hydrophilic chemical composition. For petroleum ether/water mixture, the separation flux of the membrane reached 224,600 l center dot m(-2)center dot h(-1), with a 99.96% separation efficiency. The coated mesh also presented outstanding anti-oil fouling performance. Moreover, it exhibited excellent mechanical resistance and chemical stability.

Abstract:Because of the increasing amount of oily wastewater produced each day, it is important to develop superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic oil/water separation membranes with ultrahigh flux and high separation efficiency. In this paper, a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic N -isopropylacrylamide-coated stainless steel mesh was prepared through a simple and convenient graft polymerization approach. The obtained mesh was able to separate oil/water mixtures only by gravity. In addition, the mesh showed high-efficiency separation ability (99.2%) and ultrahigh flux (235239 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). Importantly, due to the complex cross-linked bilayer structure, the prepared mesh exhibited good recycling performance and chemical stability in highly saline, alkaline and acidic environments.

Abstract:A novel micro/nanoscale rough structured superhydrophilic hybrid-coated mesh that shows underwater superoleophobic behavior is fabricated by spray casting or dipping nanoparticle–polymer suspensions on stainless steel mesh substrates. Water droplets can spread over the mesh completely; meanwhile, oil droplets can roll off the mesh at low tilt angles without any penetration. Besides overcoming the oil-fouling problem of many superhydrophilic coatings, this superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic mesh can be used to separate oil and water. The simple method used here to prepare the organic–inorganic hybrid coatings successfully produced controllable micro-nano binary roughness and also achieved a rough topography of micro-nano binary structure by controlling the content of inorganic particles. The mechanism of oil–water separation by the superhydrophilic and superoleophobic membrane is rationalized by considering capillary mechanics. Tetraethyl orathosilicate (TEOS) as a base was used to prepare the nano-SiO2 solution as a nano-dopant through a sol-gel process, while polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as the film binder and glutaraldehyde as the cross-linking agent; the mixture was dip-coated on the surface of 300-mesh stainless steel mesh to form superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic film. Properties of nano-SiO2 represented by infrared spectroscopy and surface topography of the film observed under scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicated that the film surface had a coarse micro–nano binary structure; the effect of nano-SiO2 doping amount on the film’s surface topography and the effect of such surface topography on hydrophilicity of the film were studied; contact angle of water on such surface was tested as 0° by the surface contact angle tester and spread quickly; the underwater contact angle to oil was 158°, showing superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties. The effect of the dosing amount of cross-linking agent to the waterproof swelling property and the permeate flux of the film were studied; the oil–water separation effect of the film to oil–water suspension and oil–water emulsion was studied too, and in both cases the separation efficiency reached 99%, which finally reduced the oil content to be lower than 50 mg/L. The effect of filtration times to permeate flux was studied, and it was found that the more hydrophilic the film was, the stronger the stain resistance would be, and the permeate flux would gradually decrease along with the increase of filtration times.

Abstract:Oily wastewater has severely affected the water environment health. To better overcome this problem, a number of superhydrophobic or superoleophobic materials have been used for oil/water separation. Nevertheless, there are still great challenges in the simple and rapid environmentally- friendly preparation method. In this study, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic surface was fabricated for oil/water separation by soaking the stainless steel meshes (SSM) into cement solution. The as-fabricated surface exhibited a high oil contact angle (OCA, 159 ± 2°) in water environment. In addition, the cement-coated stainless steel meshes (CCSSM) separated the oil/water mixtures with a high separation efficiency of over 90% and a permeate flux of 3397 L m-2 h-1. Moreover, after reuse for 5 times, the cement-coated meshes maintained a separation efficiency of over 95% in separating the lubricating oil /water mixtures. Besides, they still maintained the underwater superoleophobicity after being stored in real seawater for 15 days or in extreme solution (pH, 4-12), thus displaying their corrosion resistance. Meanwhile, they bore sand impact for 8 times and possessed superior antifouling performance. Further, the underlying mechanism was also extensively examined.

Abstract:Inspired from fish scales that exhibit unique underwater superoleophobicity because of the presence of micronanostructures and hydrophilic slime on their surface, we reported here the facile fabrication of underwater superoleophobic membranes by coating a layer of graphene oxide (GO) on commercially available wire meshes with tunable pore sizes. Using the wire mesh as a ready-made mask, GO-embellished mesh with open apertures (GO@mesh) could be readily fabricated after subsequent O2 plasma treatments from the back side. Interestingly, the congenital microstructures of the crossed microwires in combination with the abundant hydrophilic oxygen-containing groups of the GO layer endow the resultant GO@mesh with unique underwater superoleophobic properties. The antioil tests show that the underwater contact angles of various oils including both organic reagents (undissolved in water) and vegetable oil on GO@mesh exceed 150°, indicating the superoleophobic nature. In a representative experiment, a mixture of bean oil and water that imitates culinary sewage has been well separated with the help of our GO@mesh. GO-embellished wire meshes may find broad applications in sewage purification, especially for the treatment of oil contaminations.

Abstract:AbstractOil–water separation has recently become a global challenging task because of the frequent occurrence of oil spill accidents due to the offshore oil production and transportation and there is an increasing demand for the development of effective and inexpensive approaches for the cleaning-up of the oily pollution in water system. In this study, a self-cleaning underwater superoleophobic mesh that can be used for oil-water separation is prepared by the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of sodium silicate and TiO2 nanoparticles on the stainless steel mesh. The integration of the self-cleaning property into the all-inorganic separation mesh by using TiO2 enables the convenient removal of the contaminants by ultraviolet (UV) illumination and allows for the facile recovery of the separation ability of the contaminated mesh, making it promising for practial oil-water separation applications.

Abstract:In response to the fact that oil removal materials were easily contaminated by viscous oil, materials with easy cleaning ability and long-term efficiency were developed for oil-water separation in this study. The ceramic coating was prepared on the surface of aluminum mesh by the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method, and poly (vinyl alcohol) gel (PVA) was used to cover the MAO Al mesh. Al mesh with subsea oil repellent function was prepared. As expected, Al mesh exhibited good "hydrophilic" properties in the air and "oleophobic" properties underwater. The synthetic Al mesh exhibited good self-cleaning properties, chemical stability, and abrasion resistance. Compared with the traditional oil-water separation method, this method has a simple preparation process, low cost, and excellent performance. These properties make Al mesh ideal for oil-water separation. It has wide application prospects in oil spill cleanup, wastewater treatment, and water purification.

Abstract:Superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic materials have demonstrated good application prospects in the oil/water separation. However, their fabrication process may be inefficient and high energy consumption. For this reason, this paper proposes a method for simultaneously deposited hierarchical structures with superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic properties on the anode and cathode via one-step electrodeposition. The materials fabricated on both anode and cathode exhibit superior antifouling performance and excellent oil/water separation efficiency (above 96.2% for all five experimental oils) with a considerable permeation flux (4125 ± 67 L m−2 h−1). Moreover, the as-prepared materials maintain excellent oil/water separation efficiency after 20 separation cycles, which are higher than 98.1% and 98.8%, respectively. Besides, the materials can be stored in different concentrations of salt water for 50 days, demonstrating their outstanding corrosion resistance. Our study provides an strategy for the fabrication of superwetting materials, which is expected to promote the development of oil/water separation technology

Abstract:Special wettable materials have been shown to be promising for use in oil-water separation and, in particular, hydrogel-based materials have been studied for water separation from oil-water mixtures due to their high hydrophilicity. Here, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic phosphorylated PVA (PPVA) hydrogel-coated stainless-steel mesh with underwater oil repellency was prepared using a simple and facile route that introduced metal ions for PVA crosslinking. The PPVA hydrogel-coated mesh can not only separate immiscible oil-water mixtures but also separate surfactant-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with a high separation efficiency (>99.2%). In addition, due to its multiple crosslinked networks, the resultant PPVA hydrogel-coated mesh exhibited good chemical stability and wear resistance and can tolerate high acid, alkali, salty and organic solvents.

Abstract:A novel superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic material (MOF-5/PDA/SSM) with high flux, outstanding oil/water separation performance and durability was prepared. The stainless steel mesh (SSM) was modified by MOF-5 crystals and PDA. The introduction of MOF-5 can improve the hydrophilicity of SSM and achieve high water flux at the same time. PDA is a substance with strong adhesion which can be used as an effective bonding intermediate. The preparation strategy includes the self-polymerization of dopamine and the deposition of cubic clusters on SSM via hydrothermal reaction. The MOF-5 particles on the mesh are cubic hexahedral crystal with a uniform size diameter, which can trap water in the rough microstructure, forming a strong hydration barrier layer or composite water-solid interface on its surface, hindering the penetration of oil. The super-hydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity of the modified meshes were introduced by pre-wetting surface. The FTIR, XRD, XPS and SEM characterizations demonstrated that the successfully growth of MOF-5 and a rough structure was obtained on the mesh. The special wetting and the robustness of the fabricated mesh led to the outstanding separation efficiency (up to 99.5%), excellent recyclability (about 20 cycles) and high water flux (53.9 k L m −2 h −1 ). The mesh also showed remarked water flux and various oil/water mixtures separation performance. Particularly, the successfully prepared materials were found to be significant stable under various physical and chemical extremes environments, including maintain UWOCA>150 under acid/alkali media, marvelous performance after 120 min of continuous separation and high anti-oil intrusion pressure. The combination of metal organic framework and stainless steel mesh may provide a candidate application to effective oil-water separation.

Abstract:A novel clay-coated mesh was fabricated via a simple brush-coating method without the use of special equipment, chemical reagents, and complex chemical reactions and operation processes. Possessing superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, the clay-coated mesh can be used for efficiently separating various light oil/water mixtures. The clay-coated mesh also exhibits excellent reusability, maintaining a high separation efficiency of 99.4% after 30 repeated separations of the kerosene/water mixture.

Robust bio-inspired superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membranes for simultaneously fast water and oil recovery

Abstract:Designing a stable and uniform hydrophilic material for separation of oil and water is strongly desired for sustainable management of oily wastewater. Herein, a stable and uniform bio-inspired coating onto the non-woven fabric substrate with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity via rapid co-deposition of dopamine and polyethylenimine was demonstrated. Ammonium persulfate outperformed other oxidants (e.g., Cu2+-H2O2 and NaIO4) to rapidly trigger the co-deposition of dopamine and polyethylenimine for homogeneous superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic surface engineering. Furthermore, the co-deposition conditions, i.e., concentration of ammonium persulfate and exposure duration, have a positive dependence on the hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity of the coated fabric membranes. Specifically, the superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity (underwater oil contact angle of 165.4 ± 1.1°, sliding angle of 2.5 ± 0.5°) can be obtained for the coated fabric membranes at the optimal co-deposition condition (i.e., 28.5 mmol L−1 persulfate and coating duration of 7 h), showing a great potential in gravitational oil-water separation (permeation flux >115,000 L m−2 h−1; oil rejection >99.2%). Integrating with a superhydrophobic copper mesh, the oil-water mixed solution can be continuously and sufficiently separated, realizing simultaneous recovery of pure oil and water from oily wastewater. In addition, the bio-inspired coating displays a strong long-term chemical robustness and stability in extreme environments (i.e., acidic/alkaline solutions and oils). The study provides a facile, cost-effective and practical strategy in constructing superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic interfaces for sustainable treatment of oily wastewater.

Abstract:A novel kind of composite membranes for oil/water separation were prepared via the combination of polypropylene non-woven meshes and superhydrophilic. CaCO3-based mineral layer inspired by biomineralization. Poly (acrylic acid) brushes, which are negatively charged and can induce nucleation of CaCO3, were first tethered on the fiber surface of polypropylene non-woven meshes by UV-induced graft polymerization. The mineral layer was then fabricated on the mesh surface by an alternative soaking process. Results from measurements of static and dynamic oil contact angles reveal that the rigid mineral layer traps abundant water and forms a stable oil-repellent interface, which endows the membranes with underwater superoleophobicity (CA > 150 degrees) and low oil-adhesion (SA < 5 degrees) for various kinds of oils. Moreover, the mineral-coated meshes exhibit low transmembrane pressure for water (gravity-driven filtration) and relatively high critical oil breakthrough pressure (> 10 kPa) due to the unique multiple interconnected pores and overall high porosity of the non-woven structure. Model oil-in-water emulsion filtration experiments further show that the mineralized meshes have high rejection rate towards oil droplets whose particle sizes are larger than 2 mu m, thus making these composite non-woven meshes promising in the treatment of some industrial oil/water mixtures.
