Abstract:For a particle of I-spin I in an SU2 monopole field in five-dimensional Euclidean space, the monopole harmonics are found. They belong to the irreducible representation (p,q)5 where p =q+2I. They form a complete set of wave sections.

Abstract:Dirac’s monopole is generalized to SU2 gauge fields in five-dimensional flat space or four-dimensional spherical space. The generalized fields have SO5 symmetry. The method used is related to the concept of orthogonal gauge fields which is developed in an appendix. The angular momenta operators for the SO5 symmetrical fields are given.

Abstract:These are expanded notes of lectures given at the Advanced Summer School on Modern Mathematical Physics (JINR Dubna, July 2005) and at the 8th International School-Seminar ``The actual problems of microworld physics 2005'' (Gomel-Dubna, August 2005). I review classical monopole solutions of the SU(N) Yang-Mills-Higgs theory. The first part is a pedagogical introduction into to the theory of non-Abelian SU(2) monopoles. In the second part I discuss a particular case of SU(3) theories containing different limits of symmetry breaking. It turns out that the multimonopole configurations are natural in a model with the gauge group of higher rank. Here I discuss fundamental and composite monopoles and consider the limiting situation of the massless states. In the last part I briefly discuss construction of the $N = 2$ SU(2) supersymmetric monopoles and some of the basic properties which are connected with the field theoretical aspects of these classical solutions.

Abstract:Using the ideas developed in a previous paper which are borrowed from the mathematics of fibre bundles, it is shown that the wave function ψ of a particle of charge Ze around a Dirac monopole of strength g should be regarded as a section. The section is without discontinuities. Thus the monopole does not possess strings of singularities in the field around it. The eigensections of the angular momentum operators are monopole harmonics which are explicitly exhibited.

Abstract:In this paper we consider some general properties of spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields. We prove that the SU2 gauge fields which are spherically symmetric in the most general sense may be divided into three basic types only: (1) synchro-spherieally symmetric SU2 gauge fields, (2) strict-spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields, (3) spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields reducible to U1 gauge fields.The spherically symmetric SU2 gauge fields with a Higgs field are investigated in detail and their types are completely determined. If such a field is regarded as due to the interaction of an electromagnetic field and electrically-charged vector bosons, then the following conclusion is obtained: In the spherically symmetric case there cannot exist an electrically-charged vector boson field around an m-unit monopole except for m =± 1, 0.

Abstract:The one-dimensional Heisenberg model in the presence of orbital degeneracy is studied at the SU(4) symmetric point by means of Bethe ansatz. Following Sutherland's previous work on an equivalent model, we discuss the ground state and the low-lying excitations more extensively in connection to the spin systems with orbital degeneracy. We show explicitly that the ground state is a SU(4) singlet. We study the degeneracies of the elementary excitations and the spectra of the generalized magnons consisting of these excitations. We also discuss the complex 2-strings in the context of the Bethe ansatz solutions. [S0163-1829(99)00238-6].

Abstract:The effective Hamiltonians for chiral supersymmetric gauge theories at small spatial volume are generalizations of the Hamiltonians describing the motion of a scalar or a spinor particle in a field of Dirac monopoles (we are dealing in fact with a certain lattice of monopoles supplemented with a periodic singular potential). The gauge fields in such Hamiltonians belong to the Cartan subalgebras of the corresponding gauge algebras. Such a construction exists for all groups admitting complex representations, i.e. for $SU(N \geq 3), \ Spin(4n+2)$ with $n \geq 1$ and $E_6$. We give explicit expressions for these Hamiltonians for $SU(3)$, $SU(4) \simeq Spin(6)$ and for $SU(5)$. The simplified version of such a Hamiltonian, deprived of fermion terms, of the extra scalar potential and when only one node of the lattice is taken into consideration, describe a $3r$-dimensional motion ($r$ being the rank of the group) in the field what we call a {\it Cartan monopole}. As is the case for the ordinary monopole, the Lagrangian of this system enjoys gauge symmetry, rotational symmetry, and the parameter, generalizing the notion of magnetic charge for Cartan monopoles, is quantized.

Abstract:The Dirac spin liquid (DSL) is a two-dimensional (2D) fractionalized Mott insulator featuring massless Dirac spinon excitations coupled to a compact $U(1)$ gauge field, which allows for flux-tunneling instanton events described by magnetic monopoles in (2+1)D Euclidean spacetime. The state-operator correspondence of conformal field theory has been used recently to define associated monopole operators and determine their quantum numbers, which encode the microscopic symmetries of conventional ordered phases proximate to the DSL. In this work, we utilize semiclassical instanton methods not relying on conformal invariance to construct monopole operators directly in (2+1)D spacetime as instanton-induced 't Hooft vertices, i.e., fermion-number-violating effective interactions originating from zero modes of the Euclidean Dirac operator in an instanton background. In the presence of a flavor-adjoint fermion mass, resummation of the instanton gas is shown to select the correct monopole to be proliferated, in accordance with predictions of the state-operator correspondence. We also show that our instanton-based approach is able to determine monopole quantum numbers on bipartite lattices.

Abstract:We report on a recent progress in constructing off-shell ${\cal N}=2, 4D$ supersymmetric integer higher-spin theory in terms of unconstrained harmonic analytic gauge superfields and their cubic interaction with the matter hypermultiplets. For even superspins a new equivalent representation of the hypermultiplet couplings in terms of analytic $\omega$ superfield is presented. It involves both cubic and quartic vertices.

$SU_2(\mathbb{C})$ symmetry in quantum spin chain ground states and Haldane's conjecture

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that any translation and $SU_2(\IC)$-invariant pure state of $\IM=\otimes_{k \in \IZ}\!M^{(k)}_d(\IC)$, that is also real, lattice symmetric and reflection positive with a certain twist $r_0 \in U_d(\IC)$, is finitely correlated and its two-point spatial correlation function decays exponentially whenever $d$ is an odd integer. In particular, the Heisenberg iso-spin anti-ferromagnetic integer spin model admits unique low temperature limiting ground state and its spatial correlation function decays exponentially. The unique low temperature limiting ground state of the Hamiltonian is determined by the unique solution to Clebsch-Gordon inter-twinning isometry between two representations of $SU_2(\IC)$.

Abstract:In this thesis we study dynamic of magnetic monopoles from Lagrangian density in Yang-Mills-Higgs field theory. In particular, we discuss BPS (Bogomolny Prasad Sommerfield) magnetic monopoles, described by SU(N) Bogomolny equations, which has field equations in form of non-linear coupled matrix field equations. One of the methods to simplify SU(N) Bogomolny equations is by using harmonic maps $CP^{(N-1)}$. This method has relation with $Gr(n,N)} \sigma$-model and can transform SU(N) Bogomolny equation into more simple scalar field equations that depends only on one variable. As an example, we consider the case of SU(2) Bogomolny equation.

Abstract:We perform a projective symmetry group classification of spin $S=1/2$ symmetric quantum spin liquids with different gauge groups on the diamond lattice. Employing the Abrikosov fermion representation, we obtain $8$ $SU(2)$, $62$ $U(1)$ and $80$ $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ algebraic PSGs. Constraining these solutions to mean-field parton Ansätze with short-range amplitudes, the classification reduces to only $2$ $SU(2)$, $7$ $U(1)$ and $8$ $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ distinctly realizable phases. We obtain both the singlet and triplet fields for all Ansätze, discuss the spinon dispersions, and present the dynamical spin structure factors within a self-consistent treatment of the Heisenberg Hamiltonian with up to third-nearest neighbor couplings. Interestingly, we find that a zero-flux $SU(2)$ state and some descendent $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ states host robust gapless nodal loops in their dispersion spectrum, owing their stability at the mean-field level to the projective implementation of rotoinversion and screw symmetries. A nontrivial connection is drawn between one of our $U(1)$ spinon Hamiltonians (belonging to the nonprojective class) and the Fu-Kane-Mele model for a three-dimensional topological insulator on the diamond lattice. We show that Gutzwiller projection of the 0- and $\pi$-flux $SU(2)$ spin liquids generates long-range Néel order.

Abstract:Monopoles play a center role in gauge theories and topological matter. There are two fundamental types of monopoles in physics: vector monopoles and tensor monopoles. Examples of vector monopoles include the Dirac monopole in three dimensions and Yang monopole in five dimensions, which have been extensively studied and observed in condensed matter or artificial systems. However, tensor monopoles are less studied, and their observation has not been reported. Here we experimentally construct a tunable spin-1 Hamiltonian to generate a tensor monopole and then measure its unique features with superconducting quantum circuits. The energy structure of a 4D Weyl-like Hamiltonian with threefold degenerate points acting as tensor monopoles is imaged. Through quantum-metric measurements, we report the first experiment that measures the Dixmier-Douady invariant, the topological charge of the tensor monopole. Moreover, we observe topological phase transitions characterized by the topological Dixmier-Douady invariant, rather than the Chern numbers as used for conventional monopoles in odd-dimensional spaces.

Abstract:We consider the four dimensional scale invariant N = 2 SUquiver gauge theories with USp(2N) ends or SU(2N) ends with antisymmetric matter representations. We argue that these theories are realized as six dimensional A(2N-1) (0, 2) theories compactified on spheres with punctures. With this realization, we can study various strongly coupled cusps in moduli space and find the S-dual theories. We find a class of isolated superconformal field theories with only odd dimensional operators D(phi) >= 3 and superconformal field theories with only even dimensional operators D(phi) >= 4.
Monopoles, Scattering, and Generalized Symmetries

Abstract:We reconsider the problem of electrically charged, massless fermions scattering off magnetic monopoles. The interpretation of the outgoing states has long been a puzzle as, in certain circumstances, they necessarily carry fractional quantum numbers. We argue that consistency requires such outgoing particles to be attached to a topological co-dimension 1 surface, which ends on the monopole. This surface cannot participate in a 2-group with the magnetic 1-form symmetry and is often non-invertible. Equivalently, the outgoing radiation lies in a twisted sector and not in the original Fock space. The outgoing radiation therefore not only carries unconventional flavor quantum numbers, but is often trailed by a topological field theory. We exemplify these ideas in the 1+1 dimensional, chiral 3450 model which shares many of the same features. We comment on the effects of gauge field fluctuations on the lowest angular momentum fermion scattering states in the presence of a magnetic monopole. While, to leading order, these zero modes can penetrate into the monopole core, in the full theory some of the zero modes are lifted and develop a small centrifugal barrier. The dynamics of the zero modes is that of a multi-flavor Schwinger model with a space-dependent gauge coupling. Symmetries and anomalies constrain the fate of the pseudo-zero modes.

Dirac's "magnetic Monopoles" in Pyrochlore Ice U(1) Spin Liquids: Spectrum and Classification

Abstract:We study the U(1) quantum spin liquid on the pyrochlore spin ice systems. For the non-Kramers doublets such as Pr3+ and Tb3+, we point out that the inelastic neutron scattering result not only detects the low-energy gauge photon, but also contains the continuum of the "magnetic monopole" excitations. Unlike spinons, these "magnetic monopoles" are purely of quantum origin and have no classical analog. We further point out that the "magnetic monopole" experiences a background dual "pi" flux due to the spin-1/2 nature of the local moment when the "monopole" hops on the dual diamond lattice. We then predict that the "monopole" continuum has an enhanced spectral periodicity with a folded Brillouin zone. This prediction can be examined among the existing data on non-Kramers doublet spin liquid candidate materials like Pr2TM2O7 and Tb2TM2O7 (with TM = transition metal). The application to the Kramers doublet systems and numerical simulation is further discussed. Finally, we present a general classification of distinct symmetry enriched U(1) quantum spin liquids based on the translation symmetry fractionalization patterns of "monopoles" and "spinons."
Entangled Coherent States for Systems Withsu(2) Andsu(1,1) Symmetries

Abstract:Entangled SU(2) and SU(1,1) coherent states are developed as superpositions of multiparticle SU(2) and SU(1,1) coherent states. In certain cases, these are coherent states with respect to generalized su(2) and su(1,1) generators, and multiparticle parity states arise as a special case. As a special example of entangled SU(2) coherent states, entangled binomial states are introduced and these entangled binomial states enable the contraction from entangled SU(2) coherent states to entangled harmonic oscillator coherent states. Entangled SU(2) coherent states are discussed in the context of pairs of qubits. We also introduce the entangled negative binomial states and entangled squeezed states as examples of entangled SU(1,1) coherent states. A method for generating the entangled SU(2) and SU(1,1) coherent states is discussed and degrees of entanglement calculated. Two types of SU(1,1) coherent states are discussed in each case: Perelomov coherent states and Barut-Girardello coherent states.
Nonsymmorphic spin-space cubic groups and SU(2)$_1$ conformal invariance in one-dimensional spin-1/2 models

Abstract:Recently, extended gapless phases with emergent SU(2)$_1$ conformal invariance occupying finite regions in the phase diagrams have been found in one-dimensional spin-1/2 models with nonsymmorphic $O_h$ symmetry groups. In this work, we investigate the question of whether the conditions for emergent SU(2)$_1$ invariance can be loosened. We find that besides the nonsymmorphic $O_h$ group, the other four smaller nonsymmorphic cubic groups including $O$, $T_h$, $T_d$ and $T$ can also give rise to emergent SU(2)$_1$ invariance. Minimal spin-1/2 models having these nonsymmorphic cubic groups as symmetry groups are constructed, and numerical evidences for the emergent SU(2)$_1$ invariance are provided. Our work is useful for understanding gapless phases in one-dimensional spin systems with nonsymmorphic symmetries.
