Abstract:Faraday's law of induction and Lenz's law are generalized to monopole and dipole currents, and the relation between the electromotive forces and properly defined fluxes is clarified. For monopole currents, the inductance can be deduced from Maxwell's equations, and the corresponding flux is defined by inner product of field and area. For a media that contains charge neutral dipoles, a time-varying dual field induces a dipole current. Since the dipole current itself produces a dual field, this implies existence of electromotive force when the dipole current changes with time, and the corresponding flux is a vector calculated by the cross product of field and trajectory. The electromotive force serves as a new mechanism to generate charge neutral dipole currents, for which realizations by excitons are proposed.
