Abstract:Metallic and plasmonic nanolasers have attracted growing interest recently. Plasmonic lasers demonstrated so far operate in hybrid photon-plasmon modes in transverse dimensions, rendering it impossible to separate photonic from plasmonic components. Thus only the far-field photonic component can be measured and utilized directly. But spatially separated plasmon modes are highly desired for applications including high-efficiency coupling of single-photon emitters and ultrasensitivity optical sensing. Here, we report a nanowire (NW) laser that offers subdiffraction-limited beam size and spatially separated plasmon cavity modes. By near-field coupling a high-gain CdSe NW and a 100 nm diameter Ag NW, we demonstrate a hybrid photon-plasmon laser operating at 723 nm wavelength at room temperature, with a plasmon mode area of 0.008λ(2). This device simultaneously provides spatially separated photonic far-field output and highly localized coherent plasmon modes, which may open up new avenues in the fields of integrated nanophotonic circuits, biosensing, and quantum information processing.

Abstract:With unprecedented ability to localize electromagnetic field in time and space, the nanometer scale laser promises exceptionally broad scientific and technological innovation. However, as the laser cavity becomes subwavelength, the diffraction of light prohibits the directional emission, so-called the directionality, one of the fundamental attributes of the laser. Here, we have demonstrated a deep subwavelength waveguide embedded (WEB) plasmon laser that directs more than 70% of its radiation into an embedded semiconductor nanobelt waveguide with dramatically enhanced radiation efficiency. The unique configuration of WEB plasmon laser naturally integrates photonic and electronic functionality allowing both efficient electrical modulation and wavelength multiplexing. We have demonstrated a plasmonic circuit integrating five independently modulated multicolored plasmon laser sources multiplexed onto a single semiconductor nanobelt waveguide, illustrating the potential of plasmon lasers for large scale, ultradense photonic integration.
Photothermal Modulation of Propagating Surface Plasmons on Silver Nanowires

Abstract:Nanoplasmonic devices have received much attention in recent years due to their ability to confine light beyond the diffraction limit. Manipulating the propagation of surface plasmons (SPs) is of vital importance for the creation of nanometer-scale integrated photonic devices. In this work we exploit the photothermal property of a silver nanowire (NW) to optically modulate the propagation of SPs on it. Under the excitation of a control laser beam, the rise of local temperature induced by the photothermal effect of silver NW results in the dramatic increase or decrease of the intensity of the transmitted SPs generated by a probe laser beam, depending on the Fabry-Perot resonance conditions of the SPs on the NW. The amplitude of the photothermal modulation depth is found to be strongly dependent on the focal position, polarization, and power of the control beam. The simulations reveal that the high modulation depth at the NW end is mainly caused by the additional heat generated by the propagating SPs on the NW. The analytical solutions for the transmissivity and modulation depth are presented. Both numerical simulations and theoretical analysis agree well with the experimental results. Our work provides not only a new kind of all-optical modulation method for the propagating SPs in ultracompact plasmonic devices, but also the basic understanding about the influence of environmental temperature on the propagating SPs.
Design of an Ultrafast Plasmonic Nanolaser for High-Intensity Broadband Emission Operating at Room Temperature

Abstract:We propose a plasmonic nanolaser based on a metal-insulator-semiconductor-insulator-metal (MISIM) structure, which effectively confines light on a subwavelength scale ( similar to lambda/14). As the pump power increases, the proposed plasmonic nanolaser exhibits broadband output characteristics of 20 nm, and the maximum output power can reach 20 mu W. Furthermore, the carrier lifetime at the upper energy level in our proposed structure is measured to be about 400 fs using a double pump -probe excitation. The ultrafast characteristic is attributed to the inherent Purcell effect of plasmonic systems. Our work paves the way toward deepsubwavelength mode confinement and ultrafast femtosecond plasmonic lasers in spaser-based interconnected, eigenmode engineering of plasmonic nanolasers, nano -LEDs, and spontaneous emission control. Abstract:The electric and optical performance of different surface plasmon polariton (SPP) electric modulation structures have been investigated by comparing the response speed and modulation figures of merit (FoM). To overcome the capacitance limitation and improve the response speed, we proposed a novel silver-graphene-dielectric-graphene-semiconductor vertical structure. Semiconductor nano-waveguide is introduced to help reduce ohmic loss in silver waveguide and reflect the leaked optical field back, enhancing the modulation depth. Through optimization, a device with estimated modulation FoM of more than 70% and hundreds of GHz response speed and 3 dB bandwidth is designed, which may bring great improvement to previous optical modulators. Abstract:As miniaturized light sources of size beyond the optical diffraction limit, surface plasmon lasers are of particular interest for numerous exciting applications. Although convincing demonstrations of plasmonic lasing have been reported with the metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) hybrid design using semiconductor nanomaterials, it remains a challenge that conventional photonic lasing may be triggered and misinterpreted as plasmonic lasing. One way to address this issue is to cut off photonic modes in the waveguide by strictly restricting the semiconductor thickness. Here we propose a novel hybrid design, namely the dielectric-metal-insulator-semiconductor (DMIS) design that potentially solves the challenge. Taking advantage of strong polarization selectivity by reflection effect in favor of the plasmonic mode, whispering-gallery mode cavities based on the proposed DMIS design suppress possible photonic lasing modes and relieve the semiconductor thickness for purified plasmonic lasing. Using these cavities, we demonstrate room-temperature purified plasmon lasing with cadmium sulphide square nanobelts atop of a deposited multilayer film. Approaches for further improvement of the plamsonic lasing performance are discussed. Our design provides a reliable platform for developing better surface plasmon nanolasers using new semiconductor nanomaterials.

Abstract:A single-nanoparticle plasmon laser with ultratight optical confinement in all three dimensions is a long-cherished but yet to be realized goal. Here we propose an experimentally realizable plasmon laser using a single nanorod. We show that, by harnessing a Au-nanorod cavity with a large gain from a Purcell-enhanced stimulated emission rate and greatly suppressed high-order mode dissipation, it is possible to implement a dipole-mode plasmon laser with accessible material parameters. Our approach may lead to a real single-nanoparticle plasmon laser with three-dimensional ultraconfinement and offers an opportunity to explore and utilize the enhanced light-matter interaction at a lower dimension.

Abstract:Dynamically manipulating highly intense ultrafast pulses by optical modulators is extremely useful for strong‐field physics. However, the manipulation has been severely restricted by the fundamental drawbacks of most modulators such as the low laser damage threshold and high energy consumption. Here, the implementation of an all‐optical modulator on femtosecond lasers up to 1011 W cm−2 covering wavelengths from 1.6 to 2.3 µm is demonstrated; the modulator is controlled by a weak continuous‐wave laser (≈103 W cm−2) based on the prominent plasmon‐assisted thermo‐optic nonlinearity of suspended antimonene quantum dots (AQDs). The strong localization of the surface plasmon of the AQDs contributes a tremendous effective nonlinear refractive index (n 2 ≈ 10−5 cm2 W−1) under weak light excitation, modulating the optical phase of copropagating intense lasers, and realizing robust "ON/OFF" alterations. It is also verified that the thermo‐optical effect occurs at a fast speed of ≈240 ps in this nanomaterial system. The findings provide new insight for exploiting the potential of plasmonic nonlinearities of nanomaterials, which offers a pragmatic and extensible solution to the urgent demand for manipulating and optical limiting of strong field physics in further nanophotonic platforms.

Abstract:Laser science has tackled physical limitations to achieve higher power, faster and smaller light sources. The quest for ultra-compact laser that can directly generate coherent optical fields at the nano-scale, far beyond the diffraction limit of light, remains a key fundamental challenge. Microscopic lasers based on photonic crystals3, metal clad cavities4 and nanowires can now reach the diffraction limit, which restricts both the optical mode size and physical device dimension to be larger than half a wavelength. While surface plasmons are capable of tightly localizing light, ohmic loss at optical frequencies has inhibited the realization of truly nano-scale lasers. Recent theory has proposed a way to significantly reduce plasmonic loss while maintaining ultra-small modes by using a hybrid plasmonic waveguide. Using this approach, we report an experimental demonstration of nano-scale plasmonic lasers producing optical modes 100 times smaller than the diffraction limit, utilizing a high gain Cadmium Sulphide semiconductor nanowire atop a Silver surface separated by a 5 nm thick insulating gap. Direct measurements of emission lifetime reveal a broad-band enhancement of the nanowire's exciton spontaneous emission rate up to 6 times due to the strong mode confinement and the signature of apparently threshold-less lasing. Since plasmonic modes have no cut-off, we show downscaling of the lateral dimensions of both device and optical mode. As these optical coherent sources approach molecular and electronics length scales, plasmonic lasers offer the possibility to explore extreme interactions between light and matter, opening new avenues in active photonic circuits, bio-sensing and quantum information technology.

Abstract:With the rapid development of information and communication technology, a key objective in the field of optoelectronic integrated devices is to reduce the nano-laser size and energy consumption. Photonics nanolasers are unable to exceed the diffraction limit and typically exhibit low modulation rates of several GHz. In contrast, plasmonic nanolaser utilizes highly confined surface plasmon polariton (SPP) mode that can exceed diffraction limit and their strong Purcell effect can accelerate the modulation rates to several THz. Herein, we propose a parametrically tunable artificial plasmonic nanolasers based on metal-insulator-semiconductor-insulator-metal (MISIM) structure, which demonstrates its ability to compress the mode field volume to lambda/14. As the pump power increases, the proposed artificial plasmonic nanolaser exhibits 20-nm-wide output spectrum. Additionally, we investigate the effects of various cavity parameters on the nanolaser's output threshold, offering potentials for realizing low-threshold artificial plasmonic nanolasers. Moreover, we observe a blue shift in the center wavelength of the nanolaser output with thinner gain layer thickness, predominantly attributed to the increased exciton-photon coupling strength. Our work brings inspiration to several areas, including spaser-based interconnects, nano-LEDs, spontaneous emission control, miniaturization of photon condensates, eigenmode engineering of plasmonic nanolasers, and optimal design driven by artificial intelligence (AI).

Abstract:Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in the development of small-footprint lasers for potential applications in small-volume sensing and on-chip optical communications. Surface plasmons-electromagnetic modes evanescently confined to metal-dielectric interfaces-offer an effective route to achieving lasing at nanometer-scale dimensions when resonantly amplified in contact with a gain medium. We achieve narrow-linewidth visible-frequency lasing at room temperature by leveraging surface plasmons propagating in an open Fabry-Perot cavity formed by a flat metal surface coated with a subwavelength-thick layer of optically pumped gain medium and orthogonally bound by a pair of flat metal sidewalls. We show how the lasing threshold and linewidth can be lowered by incorporating a low-profile tapered grating on the cavity floor to couple the excitation beam into a pump surface plasmon polariton providing a strong modal overlap with the gain medium. Low-perturbation transmission-configuration sampling of the lasing plasmon mode is achieved via an evanescently coupled recessed nanoslit, opening the way to high-figure of merit refractive index sensing of analytes interacting with the open metallic trench.

Abstract:Higher emission rates and controllable emission direction are big concerns when it comes to finding a good single photon source. Recently, surface plasmons are introduced to this application, as they can manipulate and enhance the luminescence of single emitters. Here, we experimentally achieve a wide-area multiple directional enhanced light source through periodic metal grating structures. The surface-plasmon-coupled emission can have multiple precisely emission angles by just changing the period of the grating. Our result indicates that metal plasmonic grating can be used as a productive quantum device for unidirectional quantum light sources in quantum optics.

Abstract:Nanoscale lasers are ideal light-signal sources for integrated photonic devices. Most of the present lasers made of dielectric materials are restricted to being larger than half the wavelength of the optical field. Plasmon lasers made from metallic nanostructures can help to break the diffraction limit, yet they suffer from low optical pump efficiencies and low quality factors. Integrating dielectric lasers with plasmonic waveguides to construct hybrid material systems may circumvent these problems and combine the advantages of the two components. Here we demonstrate the nanoscale output of dielectric lasers via photon-plasmon coupling in rationally designed perovskite/silver heterostructures. The perovskite crystals offer the gain and high-Q cavity for low-threshold laser generation, while the embedded silver nanowires (AgNWs) help to output the lasing modes efficiently in the form of surface plasmons. The output coupling can be modulated by controlling the resonant modes of the two-dimensional perovskite microcavities. The results would pave an alternative avenue to ultrasmall light sources as well as fundamental studies of light-matter interactions.

Abstract:Manipulating stimulated‐emission light in nanophotonic devices on scales smaller than their emission wavelengths to meet the requirements for optoelectronic integrations is a challenging but important step. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are one of the most promising candidates for sub‐wavelength optical confinement. In this study, based on the principle of surface plasmon amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation (SPASER), III‐Nitride‐based plasmonic nanolaser with hybrid metal–oxide–semiconductor (MOS) structures is designed. Using geometrically elliptical nanostructures fabricated by nanoimprint lithography, elliptical nanolasers able to demonstrate single‐mode and multimode lasing with an optical pumping power density as low as 0.3 kW cm−2 at room temperature and a quality Q factor of up to 123 at a wavelength of ≈490 nm are achieved. The ultralow lasing threshold is attributed to the SPP‐coupling‐induced strong electric‐field‐confinement in the elliptical MOS structures. In accordance with the theoretical and experimental results, the size and shape of the nanorod are the keys for manipulating hybridization of the plasmonic and photonic lasing modes in the SPASER. This finding provides innovative insight that will contribute to realizing a new generation of optoelectronic and information devices.
Plasmonic Optical Modulator based on Adiabatic Coupled Waveguides

Abstract:In atomic multi-level systems, adiabatic elimination is a method used to minimize complicity of the system by eliminating irrelevant and strongly coupled levels by detuning them from one-another. Such a three-level system, for instance, can be mapped onto physical in form of a three-waveguide system. Actively detuning the coupling strength between the respective waveguide modes allows modulating light propagating through the device, as proposed here. The outer waveguides act as an effective two- photonic-mode system similar to ground- and excited states of a three-level atomic system, whilst the center waveguide is partially plasmonic. In adiabatic elimination regime, the amplitude of the middle waveguide oscillates much faster in comparison to the outer waveguides leading to a vanishing field build up. As a result, the middle waveguide becomes a dark state and hence a low insertion-loss of 8 decibel is expected to keep when achieving the modulation depth as high as 70 decibel despite the involvement of a plasmonic waveguide in the design presented here. The modulation mechanism relies on switching this waveguide system from a critical coupling regime to adiabatic elimination condition via electrostatically tuning the free-carrier concentration and hence the optical index of a thin ITO layer residing in the plasmonic center waveguide. This alters the effective coupling length and the phase mismatching condition thus modulation in each of outer waveguides. Our results show a modulator energy efficiency as low as 40 atto-joule per bit and an extinction ratio of 50 decibel. Given the minuscule footprint of the modulator, the resulting lumped-element limited RC delay is expected to exceed 200 giga hertz. This type of modulator paves the way for next-generation both energy-and speed conscience optical short-reach interconnects.
