Abstract:The design of a Si/SiO_2 photonic crystal omnidirectional polarization splitter at the center wavelength of λ=1.5μm is briefly presented utilizing a photonic band gap for TE mode. The fabrication of the omnidirectional photonic crystal polarization splitter is an easy process based on coating films on the grating and is suitable for industry. The frequency band corresponds to wavelength band from (λ=1.37μm) to λ=1.76μm. The theoretical relative bandwidth is 32.8%.

Abstract:A high uniformity and broad bandwidth Y junction optical beam splitter is proposed and analyzed in this paper based on silicon-on-insulator platform. By replacing the uniform branch with the multimode tapered branch, the bandwidth and the power uniformity of two output ports are unproved prominently. Furthermore, the sensitivity to fabrication accuracy is reduced by widening the splitting angle. The simulation and the experimental results confirm that the bandwidth is larger than 100 nm, the power uniformity of two output ports is enhanced 4 dB, whereas the insertion loss is less than 0.6 dB and the return loss is larger than 26 dB, respectively.

Abstract:A high-performance polarizing beam splitter (PBS) is demonstrated by using asymmetrical directional couplers on a 220nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) photonics platform. The extinction ratio of the PBS with cascaded directional couplers is > 35 dB for both TE and TM polarizations around the central wavelength of 1550 nm. The bandwidths for an extinction ratio of 20 dB and 30 dB are 275 nm and 230 nm, respectively, for TE polarization, as well as > 300 nm and 225 nm, respectively, for TM polarization. The insertion losses for TE polarization are < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of > 300 nm. The insertion losses for TM polarization are < 1 dB and < 0.5 dB with a bandwidth of 218 nm and 174 nm, respectively.

Abstract:A novel polarization beam splitter based on an anti-symmetric sidewall Bragg grating in a multimode silicon-on-insulator strip waveguide is demonstrated. Anti-symmetric spatially periodic refractive-index perturbations are designed for strong coupling between the fundamental (TE0) and the first-order transverse electric modes (TE1), while not for transfer magnetic modes. An adiabatic coupler is cascaded at the input-port, so as to drop the TE1 reflection. The Bragg grating has a compact length of ∼20 μm (55 periods). The polarization isolations of the through- and drop-ports at the wavelength of 1557 nm are 34 and 31 dB, respectively. A broad bandwidth of 64 nm and a large fabrication tolerance of 80 nm for polarization isolation over 20 dB are also achieved.

Abstract:In this Letter, waveguide beam splitters (1 x 3) with type I modifications are fabricated in a LiNbO3 crystal by femtosecond laser direct writing. The influence of the relative positions of three sub-waveguides on power splitting ratios are investigated in detail and the corresponding output intensities as functions of the relative positions in the numerical simulation are plotted, which are in good accordance with the experimental results. In addition, the waveguide beam splitter with a 1:1:1 splitting ratio is fabricated by changing the relative widths of the three branch-waveguides. Guiding performances at 532 nm are measured and analyzed by a typical end-face coupling system. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the beam splitting ratio of the waveguide splitter can be precisely regulated by the positions and widths of the sub-waveguides.

Abstract:We describe a compact double-layer waveguide grating splitter that not only achieves efficient coupling between single mode fiber and a silicon-on-insulator optical waveguide but also realizes effective splitting. By appropriate choice of waveguide/grating parameters, including thicknesses, periods, height, and fill factor to optimize the mode matching, coupling efficiency is improved and the value of power difference of each output port is also significantly decreased. The maximum of power difference between four output ports is about 6.2%; however, the minimum value is only 0.6% or so. Moreover, the average power difference of four output ports is lower than 10% for TE polarization light over the 10 nm wavelength bandwidth centered at 1: 54 mu m. In addition, the splitter structure has the best tolerance for grating fabrication with deviations of grating depth 90 nm. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A novel hollow-core (HW) Y-branch waveguide splitter based on high-contrast grating (HCG) is presented. We calculated and designed the HCG-HW splitter using Rigorous Coupled Wave Analysis (RCWA). Finite-different timedomain (FDTD) simulation shows that the splitter has a broad bandwidth and the branching loss is as low as 0.23 dB. Fabrication is accomplished with standard Silicon-On-Insulator ( SOI) process. The experimental measurement results indicate its good performance on beam splitting near the central wavelength lambda = 1550 nm with a total insertion loss of 7.0 dB.

Abstract:Compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted couplers is proposed by utilizing contra-directional coupling between two corrugated strip waveguides. The co-directional coupling in the device is greatly suppressed by the designed asymmetric structure. The phase matching condition is only satisfied for TE polarization at the central wavelength of 1550 nm by a spatially periodic refractive-index perturbation. Due to the contra-directional coupling, the device breaks the limit of the precise control of the coupling strength and length. The simulation results show that the presented PBS, with a coupling length of only 19 μm, has a broad working bandwidth (∼40 nm) for a crosstalk below -12 dB. A large fabrication tolerance (±40 nm) for the waveguide width is also achieved.

Abstract:A grating waveguide is introduced and designed to serve as both a polarization splitter and an efficient vertical coupler between a fiber and a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanophotonic waveguide. Through this grating waveguide, the light from the fiber can be efficiently coupled into an SOI chip where the two orthogonally polarized waves are separated to travel towards the opposite directions along the waveguide. According to our simulations, the optimized structure can give a high coupling efficiency of about 50% for both polarizations, as well as a large bandwidth of over 70 nm and a very low polarization crosstalk below -22 dB at the output ports.

Abstract:A one-dimensional grating serving both as a polarization beam splitter and a vertical coupler for silicon photonic circuits is designed, fabricated, and characterized. Bragg reflectors are employed to improve greatly the coupling efficiency. Over 50% efficiency for both polarizations are achieved experimentally, and the extinction ratio between them is also high ( -20 dB).

Abstract:A high efficiency grating coupler between single-mode fiber and silicon-on-insulator waveguide is designed by a formula method. Over 78.5% coupling efficiency (>−1.05 dB) with 3 dB bandwidth about 50 nm for one grating coupler is obtained experimentally and this result is the highest one as far as we know. This grating coupler is CMOS compatible which needs only one etch-step and is designed for a standard SOI chip without any Bragg reflector or bottom reflector.

Abstract:The properties of two-fold images, based on asymmetric interference in multimode interference-based photonic crystal waveguides, are numerically studied with finite-difference time-domain simulations. With these image properties, 2 x 2 power splitters (PSs) with an ultracompact size are designed. Arbitrary splitting ratio can be achieved by modifying the sizes (the effective refractive indices) of one pair of rods in the multimode region. As an example, a 3-dB 2 x 2 PS with a size of 24 x 8 mu m(2) is presented with an output efficiency as high as 98%. The method can be extended for the design of M x N PSs for photonic integrated circuits applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a compact silicon polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on grating-assisted contradirectional couplers (GACCs). Over 30-dB extinction ratios and less than 1-dB insertion losses are achieved for both polarizations. The proposed PBS exhibits tolerance in width variation, and the polarization extinction ratios remain higher than 20 dB for both polarizations when the width variation is adjusted from + 10 to -10 nm. Benefiting from the enhanced coupling by the GACCs, the polarization extinction ratio can be kept higher than 15 dB and the insertion loss is lower than 2 dB for both polarizations when the coupling length varies from 30.96 to 13.76 μm.

Abstract:We demonstrated an ultra-broadband dual-polarization power splitter based on silicon subwavelength gratings (SWGs). Multimode interference (MMI) couplers based on SWG are utilized for power splitting. SWGs with different orientations are combined to form a taperized hetero-anisotropic slab, which contains single mode for TE light but multimode for TM light. Such configuration is utilized to make it possible to design the coupling length of TE light and TM light separately. The geometry parameters such as numbers of periods and duty cycles for the SWGs are engineered to make the two-fold images of different wavelengths and two polarizations located at the same position, which will result in low loss and large bandwidth. Both the simulation and measurement results show that the proposed device can work over a large bandwidth of 420 nm (1.26 ~ 1.68 μm) with loss lower than 1 dB. The footprint of the proposed device is quite small (18.4 μm × 2.8 μm).

Abstract:An optical wavelength demultiplexer with the etched diffraction grating (EDG) on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material is demonstrated. Fabricated by the wet-anisotropic-etching method, 90° turning mirrors are used to bend waveguides, and the size of the EDG-based demultiplexer is minimized to only 16×2.5 mm 2 . The crosstalk is below −16 dB. The on-chip loss is about 9.97 dB, which is composed of about 8.72 dB excess loss and 1.25 dB diffraction loss. The polarization-dependent central wavelength shift is below 0.13 nm, and the polarization-dependent loss is about 0.35 dB. The sources of the crosstalk and loss are discussed in details, and the related measures to improve the performance are also presented.

Abstract:Optical splitter is one of most typical device heavily demanded in implementation of Fiber To The Home (FTTH) system. Due to its compatibility with optical fibers, low propagation loss, flexibility, and most distinguishingly, potentially cost-effectiveness, glass-based integrated optical splitters made by ion-exchange technology promise to be very attractive in application of optical communication networks. Aiming at integrated optical splitters applied in optical communication network, glass ion-exchange waveguide process is developed, which includes two steps: thermal salts ion-exchange and field-assisted ion-diffusion. By this process, high performance optical splitters are fabricated in specially melted glass substrate. Main performance parameters of these splitters, including maximum insertion loss (IL), polarization dependence loss (PDL), and IL uniformity are all in accordance with corresponding specifications in generic requirements for optic branching components (GR-1209-CORE). In this paper, glass based integrated optical splitters manufacturing is demonstrated, after which, engineering-oriented research work results on glass-based optical splitter are presented.

Abstract:The undercut long-wave infrared (LWIR) waveguide components with air-gap beneath are analyzed and fabricated on the Si-wafer with simple manufacturing process. A 1 x 2 multimode interference (MMI) splitter based on this structure is presented and measured under the 10.6 mu m wavelength experimental setup. The uniformity of the MMI fabricated is 0.76 dB. The relationship among the output power, slab thickness and air-gap width is also fully discussed. Furthermore, undercut straight waveguides based on SOI platform are fabricated for propagation loss evaluation. Ways to reduce the loss are discussed either. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America
