Abstract:A novel configuration of compound-cavity multi-wavelength Brillouin erbium fiber laser is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With an incident optical carrier power of 8 dBm, at least 14 lasing lines are obtained with a wavelength spacing of ∼0.08 nm. Stability and power uniformity of the multi-wave-length lasing are ensured by the flat hybrid gain of Brillouin and erbium, the compound-cavity structure, and the four-wave mixing suppression using a long (10 km) single-mode fiber. A stable and frequency-switchable microwave can be achieved by incorporating a fiber Bragg grating filter to select the desired n th-order Stokes wave and beating it with the optical carrier at a photodetector. In our experiment, the 1st-4th-order Stokes waves are filtered respectively and hence a high-quality microwave with a switchable frequency from ∼10 to ∼40 GHz and a tuning step of ∼10 GHz is achieved. The signal-to-noise ratio is measured to be >25 dB.

Abstract:We demonstrate the strong linewidth reduction by a compact Brillouin/erbium fiber laser (BEFL), in which 4-m erbium-doped fiber (EDF) acts as both the Brillouin and linear gain media. Due to the assistance of the linear gain in the EDF with the acoustic damping and the cavity feedback in the resonator, the proposed BEFL transferred the 20-MHz Brillouin pump (BP) into the 950-Hz Brillouin Stokes laser emission, demonstrating that the laser linewidth is reduced by over 2 × 104 times through this BEFL. The linewidth reduction is independent of the 980-nm pump power or the BP wavelength. The BEFL keeps strong linewidth reduction over the whole C-band. This effect of the BEFL provides a simple but effective way to obtain highly coherent light for many applications.

Abstract:A compact low noise single frequency linearly polarized distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser based on a 1.4-cm-long homemade Er3+/Yb3+ -codoped phosphate single mode glass fiber has been demonstrated. An over 50 mW stable single frequency linearly polarized fiber laser was achieved. The measured slope efficiency is more than 21.6%, and the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is higher than 65 dB and the laser linewidth is less than 2.0kHz. The laser RIN is measured to be less than −150 dB/Hz at the frequencies over 2.0MHz, and the obtained linear polarization extinction ratio (LPER) is more than 30 dB.

Abstract:A novel and simple two-frequency Brillouin fiber laser is presented. It is based on a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity with fiber Bragg gratings as reflectors. The model of stimulated Brillouin scattering in fiber grating-based Fabry-Perot resonator is investigated. The laser allows conversion efficiency of close to 100% and suppresses the higher-order Stokes waves. The theoretical prediction is presented and the experimental demonstration is realized.

Abstract:A multi-wavelength single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) Brillouin-erbium fiber laser has been proposed and demonstrated by using the broadband linear gain and the narrow band gain of stimulated Brillouin scattering both in Er-doped fiber. Eight orders of lased Stokes have been observed with relatively uniform amplitudes and rigid spacing of 11 GHz. Each Stokes frequency works on SLM operation owing to very short oscillating cavity. The output signal-to-noise ratio is as high as 50 dB. The hybrid gain of two mechanisms in Er-doped fiber is helpful to improve the flatness of the multi-wavelength combs.

Abstract:A simple and compact Erbium-doped fiber laser is demonstrated with two Sagnac loops formed by a 3×3 microfiber coupler. By fusing two ports on each side of the 3 ×3 microfiber coupler and embedding a 90 cm Erbium-doped fiber in one loop, a stable laser output is achieved at 1530 nm region with an optical signal to noise ratio of ~40 dB using a 980-nm pump. Taking advantage of the large evanescent field and excellent temperature and mechanical properties of the micro-sized coupled area, the device has great potentials in tunable laser and active sensing for refractive index, temperature, strain and pressure.

Abstract:We demonstrated a compact multiwavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (MBEFL) with quadruple-Brillouin-frequency spacing. The quadruple-Brillouin-frequency spacing multiwavelength is generated mainly by utilizing two four-port circulators, two coils of single-mode fiber and two erbium gain modules. The generated multiwavelength spectra were investigated through adjusting the Brillouin pump (BP) and the 980 nm pumps. In the experiments, eight stable wavelengths were produced and the wavelength spacing was 0.348 nm (about 43.5 GHz) as the wavelength and the power of the BP were 5 mW and 1548.11 nm respectively, meanwhile the two 980 nm pumps' powers were 470 mW and 520 mW respectively. The output multiwavelength can be tuned from 1546.12 nm to 1561.01 nm, and the maximum optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of the output channel was about 37 dB. The average OSNR of the stable multiwavelength was about 27 dB. The proposed stable and wider channel spaced MBEFL has diverse applications in dense wavelength division multiplexing optical communication, microwave photonics and fiber-optic sensors.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-repetition-rate soliton fiber laser that is based on highly doped anomalously dispersive erbium-doped fiber. By splicing an 11 mm single-mode fiber to the erbium-doped fiber, the thermal damage of the butt-coupled saturable Bragg reflector (SBR) is overcome. The laser generates 187 fs pulses at a repetition rate of 967 MHz with a measured long-term stability of more than 60 h.

Abstract:An efficient single frequency fiber laser by using a newly-developed Er(3+)/Yb(3+) co-doped single mode phosphate glass fiber with the net gain coefficient of 5.2 dB/cm and propagation loss coefficient of 0.04 dB/cm has been demonstrated. Over 300 mW stable continuous -wave single transverse and longitudinal mode seed lasering at 1.5 microm has been achieved from a 2.0 cm-long active fiber. The measured slope efficiency and the calculated quantum efficiency of laser emission are found to be 30.9% and 0.938 +/- 0.081, respectively. It is found that the linewidth of the fiber laser is less than 2 kHz, and the measured relative intensity noise (RIN) is around -120 dB/Hz in the frequency range of 50 to 500 kHz.

Abstract:To improve the output power and the laser efficiency compared with common fiber Brillouin lasers,a small core photonic crystal fiber(PCF) based ring-cavity Brillouin fiber laser was presented.An erbium-doped fiber amplifier and an optical filter were added to the fiber ring,fiber ring loss was compensated and the stimulated emission of the Erbium-doped fiber were suppressed respectively.Experimental results show that the stable Brillouin laser is achieved by the fiber laser using 25 m small core PCF,and that the erbium-doped fiber amplifier in the fiber ring is the major energy source of the output laser.Compared with common single mode fiber,the small core PCF has higher non-linear coefficient and larger Brillouin gain,and is suitable for the gain medium of Brillouin fiber laser.

Abstract:Brillouin fiber laser with the non-resonance pumping configuration, has compact set-up, good wavelength tunability and high-power single-frequency-emission capability, being regarded as an important technique for highly-coherent light generation. Such Brillouin fiber lasers, using single-mode fiber (SMF) as the Brillouin gain medium, generally have high lasing thresholds and mode-hopping instabilities, resulting from the relatively-low Brillouin gain coefficient of the conventional SMF. Here, we report a compact, non-resonance-pumping Brillouin photonic crystal fiber laser that can generate kHz-level-linewidth single-frequency lasing with tens-of-mW lasing threshold. Mode-hopping instability of this laser is largely suppressed thanks to the short (∼20 m) cavity length, which gives rise to a free-spectral-range (FSR) value of ∼10 MHz properly matching the tens-of-MHz Brillouin gain bandwidth. Experimental results of both self-heterodyne and frequency-noise measurements indicate a laser linewidth of ∼1.4 kHz, corresponding to high linewidth-narrowing ratio of ∼18. No lasing line of high-order Stokes was observed in experiments as the laser pump power was gradually increased to ∼200 mW, giving a nearly-linear lasing slope.

Abstract:A multi-wavelength Brillouin-erbium ring-cavity fiber laser utilizing 2-m erbium doped fiber (EDF) and 70-m high nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is proposed and demonstrated. The output characteristics and also the impacts of pump and Brillouin pump (BP) on the output spectra are investigated in detail. The output number and wavelength location of Brillouin lines are tunable by adjusting the power of 1465 nm pump and BP, and a 5-channel output within 11 nm (1551–1562 nm) tuning range is achieved by choosing appropriate pump power.

Abstract:In this paper we report the fabrication of a robust, tunable single-longitudinal-mode compound-ring Er/sup 3+/-doped fiber laser. The laser is fundamentally structured on an all-fiber compound-ring resonator in which a dual-coupler fiber ring is inserted into the main cavity. When combined in tandem with a mode-restricting intracavity tunable bandpass filter, the compound-ring resonator ensures single-longitudinal-mode laser oscillation. The laser can provide up to 20 mW output power over much of its 1525 to 1570 nm wavelength tuning range. The short-term linewidth of the laser output measured is less than 5 kHz. The laser frequency is actively stabilized for a long time by exploiting the inherent filter nature of the compound-ring resonator. The reduction of an associated frequency modulation is also discussed in detail.

Abstract:A self-seeded multi-wavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (BEFL) with high Optical Signal To Noise Ratio (OSNR) is demonstrated in the combination of the local line-cavity and the overall ring-cavity system. Especially, the BEFL is composed of one 13 m-Erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser, a 1-km-long single-mode fiber (SMF) merely, where is no filter included. The self-seeded signal in BEFL is initiated by the oscillating waves generated from EDFs and the polarization related phase noise introduced by Faraday rotator mirrors (FRM) which cause spontaneous scattering and backscattered Stokes wave in the fiber. One Polarization controller (PC) is set to select the seed wave, suppressing the output of other wavelengths, by controlling the gain and loss of the cavity. In this proposed structure, the output spectrum is manifested 38 Stokes channels whose OSNR acting as 30 dB, spanning 9 nm. High stability and repeatability of Stokes line is produced from 270 mA-bias 980 nm-pump current which is monitored for changes within 100 min. Such a detailed exploration based on traditional devices will be definitely vital in assisting the generation of multi-Stoke signals.

Abstract:We demonstrate a multi-wavelength Brillouin-erbium fiber laser (BEFL) with narrow linewidth and tunable wavelength interval using dual-wavelength Brillouin pumping. The generation of multi-wavelength output in BEFL is based on the combination of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in a fiber cavity. The tunable wavelength interval is determined by the artificially controlled wavelength interval of the pumping lasers. The BEFL could compress a 1 MHz pump laser to a 340 Hz Brillouin Stokes laser, which proves the BEFL has excellent capability of linewidth compression. An erbium-doped fiber pumped by 980 nm laser is inserted into the cavity to further amplify the Brillouin laser. The wideband multi-wavelength BEFL covering over 50 nm is successfully generated when the 980 nm pump power is 400 mW. These features of multi-wavelength BEFL provide an effective method for optical communication systems and optical fiber sensing.

Abstract:Polarization influences on the performance of multi-wavelength Brillouin Er3+-doped fiber laser are investigated by adjusting the polarization controller (PC) in the fiber loop mirror (FLM), where the linear laser cavity is composed of a fiber-tailed mirror and an FLM, and the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and the Er3+-doped fiber amplification (EDFA) simultaneously serve as the cavity gain. We realized 1–7 Brillouin laser lines by increasing the 980 nm pump power. For the first-order Brillouin laser, the signal–noise ratio (SNR) and optical intensity present a sinusoidal envelope; the conversion efficiency changes significantly from 0.56465 dBm/mw to 0.44975 dBm/mw by adjusting the ring's angle in the PC; the first-order SBS thresholds are 20.4 mw, 36.1 mw and 28.5 mw at different angles θ2 = 36°, 276° and 300°, respectively; flatness between the two Brillouin lasers change obviously from 2.863 dB to 41.801 dB with different ring angles; the second-order Brillouin laser is suppressed and disappears finally at Δθ2 = −64° to −84° and 106°~136° angle variation. For the fifth-order Brillouin laser, the highest-order Brillouin laser line is seriously suppressed until it disappears at some angle variations similarly. The powers and wavelength stabilities for one-, three- and seven-wavelength Brillouin fiber lasers were measured in 1 h, and the obtained Er3+-doped multi-wavelength Brillouin fiber laser (MWBFL) worked stably during that time, but the stabilities become worse with higher SBS orders.
