Abstract:Under anaerobic conditions,reductive dechlorination of chlorinated organic pollutants is thought to be coupled to biogeochemical processes of some biogenic elements in soil.The variety,bio-availability and toxicity of organic pollutants can significantly affect the transformation of the biogeochemical processes.Correspondingly,soil natural active redox processes can also significantly affect the dynamics of organic pollutant transformation.Based on the classical redox reactions sequence,the effects and mechanisms of denitrification process,dissimilatory iron reduction process,sulfate reduction process and methanogenic process on reductive dechlorination of chlorinated organic pollutants were reviewed and discussed in this paper.We also provided reference for the further study to disclose more in-depth mechanism regarding reductive dechlorination and their interaction with the co-occurring natural redox processes in soil under anaerobic environment.

Abstract:The kinetics of oxidation-reduction reaction between N,N-diethylhydroxylamine (DEHAN) and neptunium (VI) in nitric acid media has been studied by spectrophotometry at 25.2 °C. The rate equation is -d[Np(VI)/dt= k [Np(VI)][DEHAN]/[H + ] found by investigating the influence of concentration, acidity, ionic strength and temperature on the reaction. The rate constant of the reaction k is 23.0±1.8 min −1 for μ = 2.0 mol/l. A possible mechanism of reaction has been suggested according to the ESR spectra of nitroxide radical produced in the DEHAN+V(V) system.

Abstract:The kinetic properties of the oxidation-reduction reaction between N-methylhydroxylamine (NMHAN) and vanadium(V) in nitric acid medium has been studied by spectrophotometry at 23.1 °C. The rate equation of the redox reaction was determined as -d[V(V)]/d t=k [V(V)] [NMHAN] by investigating the influence of concentration of NMHAN, acidity, ionic strength and the ratio of initial concentration of V(V) to NMHAN on the reaction. The rate constant of the reaction k > = 0.818±0.051 (mol/l) −1 ·s −1 at the ionic strength of 1.00 mol/l. The activation energy of the redox reaction was calculated to be 39.6 kJ/mol. A possibly radical mechanism of the redox reaction between NMHAN and V(V) has been suggested on the basis of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of nitroxyl radical, i.e., CH 3 Ṅ HO. It is helpful to understand and make the redox mechanism of NMHAN and Np(VI) clear in the reprocessing process of nuclear spent fuel.

Abstract:Effective adjustment and control of the oxidation state of plutonium (Pu) and neptunium (Np) is an indispensable component of Np/Pu separation in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. Some hydrazine derivatives including methylhydrazine (CH3N2H3) effectively achieves the reduction of Np(VI) to Np(V) without reducing Pu(IV). Herein, we explored the reduction mechanisms of Pu(IV) and Np(VI) by CH3N2H3 in HNO3 solution using scalar-relativistic density functional theory. We elucidated the difference in the reduction mechanism between Np(VI) and Pu(IV) ions by CH3N2H3. The energy barrier for the reduction of [NpVIO2(H2O)5]2+ and [NpVIO2(NO3)(H2O)3]+ by CH3N2H3 is largely different due to the coordination of nitrate ion. Moreover, the energy barrier of the reduction of [NpVIO2(H2O)5]2+ is apparently lower than that of [PuIV(NO3)2(H2O)7]2+, which is in line with the experimental observations. The results of Mayer bond order and localized molecular orbitals clarify the structural evolution of the reaction pathways. Analysis of the spin density demonstrates that the first Np(VI) and Pu(IV) reduction belongs to the outer-sphere electron transfer and the second Np(VI) and Pu(IV) reduction is the hydrogen transfer. This study explains theoretically why CH3N2H3 reduces Np(VI) but not Pu(IV), and helps to design promising reductants for the Np/Pu separation in spent nuclear fuel reprocessing.

Abstract:An efficient approach to Np separation in the Plutonium Uranium Reduction EXtraction (PUREX) process is to adjust Np(VI) to Np(V) by free-salt reductants, such as hydrazine and its derivatives. Recently, carbohydrazide (CO(N2H3)2), a derivative of hydrazine and urea, has received much attention, which can reduce Np(VI) to Np(V) in the extraction reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. Herein, according to the experimental observations, we examine the reduction mechanism of four Np(VI) by one carbohydrazide molecule using multiple theoretical calculations. The fourth Np(VI) reduction with a 22.26 kcal mol-1 energy barrier is the rate-determining step, which is in accordance with the experimental observations (20.54 ± 1.20 kcal mol-1). The results of spin density reflect that the reduction of the first and third Np(VI) ion is an outer-sphere electron transfer, while that of the second and fourth Np(VI) ion is the hydrogen transfer. Localized molecular orbitals (LMOs) uncover that the breaking of the N-H bond and formation of the Oyl-H bond are accompanied by the reaction from initial complexes (ICs) to intermediates (INTs). This work offers basic perspectives for the reduction mechanism of Np(VI) to Np(V) by CO(N2H3)2, which is also expected to design excellent free-salt Np(VI) reductants for the separation of Np in the advanced PUREX process.

Abstract:The key to effective separation of neptunium from the spent fuel reprocessing process is to adjust and control its valence state. Hydrazine and its derivatives have been experimentally confirmed to be effective salt-free reductants for reducing Np(VI) to Np(V). We theoretically studied the reduction reactions of Np(VI) with three hydrazine derivatives (2-hydroxyethyl hydrazine (HOC2H4N2H3), methyl hydrazine (CH3N2H3), and formyl hydrazide (CHON2H3)) and obtained the free radical ion mechanism and the free radical mechanism. Their potential energy profiles (PEPs) suggest that the free radical mechanism is the most probable reaction. Based on the energy barrier of the free radical ion mechanism, the trend of the reduction ability of the three hydrazine derivatives is HOC2H4N2H3 > CH3N2H3 > CHON2H3, which is in excellent agreement with the experimental results. Lastly, the analyses of natural bond orbitals (NBOs), quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM), and electron localization function (ELF) have been carried out to explore the bonding evolution of the structures along the reaction pathways. This work provides an insight into the reduction mechanism of Np(VI) with hydrazine derivatives from the theoretical perspective and helps to design more effective reductants for the separation of U/Np and Np/Pu in spent fuel reprocessing.

Abstract:Effectively adjusting and controlling the valence state of neptunium (Np) is essential in its separation during spent fuel reprocessing. Hydrazine and its derivatives as free-salts can selectively reduce Np(VI) to Np(V). Reduction mechanisms of Np(VI) with hydrazine and four derivatives have been explored using multiple theoretical methods in our previous works. Herein, we examine the reduction mechanism of Np(VI) with hydrazinopropionitrile (NCCH2N2H3) which exhibits faster kinetics than most other hydrazine derivatives probably due to its σ-π hyperconjugation effect. Free radical ion pathways I, II and III involving the three types of hydrazine H atoms were found that correspond to the experimentally established mechanism of reduction of two Np(VI) via initial oxidation to [NCCH2N2H3]+•, followed by conversion to NCCH2N2H (+ 2H3O+) and ultimately to CH3CN + N2. Potential energy profiles suggest that the second redox stage is rate-determining for all three pathways. Pathway I with water-mediated proton transfer is energetically preferred and explains the particularly fast rate for hydrazinopropionitrile. Analyses using the approaches of localized molecular orbitals (LMOs), quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) elucidate the bonding evolution for the structures on the reaction pathways. This work offers new insights into the nature of reduction of Np(VI) by hydrazinopropionitrile via water-mediated proton transfer, and provides a basis for designing free-salt reductants for Np separations.

Advances in Environmental Coordination Chemistry of Np and Pu with Inorganic Anions in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Neptunium (Np) and plutonium (Pu) are two important actinides in nuclear industry. They can be generated through neutron capture of uranium (U) in reactors or decay from other transuranic elements. Representative isotopes of Np and Pu such as Np-237 and Pu-239 have long half-lives and possess high radiotoxicity, therefore may impose great hazard to biological system if they are released into the environment. The rich redox chemistry of Np and Pu further adds complexity of their chemical behavior in the environment. The coordination chemistry of Np and Pu in aqueous solution is of great significance to help understand and control their speciation distribution and migration behaviors in aqua environment. This article reviews the advances in coordination chemistry of Np and Pu with several common inorganic anions (OH-, CO32-, SO42-, Cl-, NO3-, F-, PO43-) in aqueous solution, especially the speciation and coordination thermodynamics between Np/Pu in different oxidation states and these anions. In general, Np and Pu ions in the same oxidation state exhibit similar coordination behavior (species, structure, stability constants, etc.) when coordinating with the same anion. The coordination strength for Np/Pu ions in different oxidation states with the same anion ligand is roughly in the order of IV>III, VI>V. For the coordination of Np/Pu ions with different anions, the strength sequences are OH- > F- > H2PO4- > NO3- > Cl- for monovalent anions and CO32- > HPO42- > SO42- for divalent anions. Factors such as instability of Np/Pu ions in some oxidation states, weak complexation, and low solubility of the complexes in the aqueous solution cause difficulties in obtaining precise and reliable coordination parameters for these ions experimentally. Moreover, the coordination parameters determined by different methods may vary with each other. To obtain more reliable parameters for the coordination of Np/Pu ions with these anions in the future, the use of more advanced characterization methods and the assistance of theoretical computation may provide strong support.
High-efficient Catalytic Reduction of 4-Nitrophenol Based on Reusable Ag Nanoparticles/graphene-Loading Loofah Sponge Hybrid.

Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) such as Au and Ag have shown many applications in the field of catalysis, sensing etc. due to their excellent photoelectric properties. But agglomeration and a low recovery rate are big problems for their applications. In this research, a novel Ag NPs/graphene (reduced graphene oxide)-loading loofah sponge (Ag NPs/RGO-LS) was synthesized through a one-step reduction method. Where the RGO is used as a nano-support with the high specific surface area and the high conductivity to prevent the agglomeration of Ag NPs and provide a conductive layer. The natural, green, low-cost and high-yield LS is designed as a macro-support to reduce the loss of Ag NPs during recycling. The as-prepared Ag NPs/RGO-LS is stable, uniform, and exhibits high efficiency and reusability in the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) with a high rate constant of 1.893 min-1 as well as an average conversion of 98% in 6 min during five cycles. The results have not only paved the way for the wide application of Ag NPs but also provide a new road for the application of other metal NPs.
Study on valence of Pu, Np and Tc in nitric acid after electrolytic reduction

Abstract:The adjustment of valence of actinides, e.g. U(VI) to U(IV), is one of the most important subject to increase its affinity onto anion exchanger for quantitative recovery of U, Pu and Np in ERIX Process for advanced FBR reprocessing system. For this purpose, nitric acid concentration of spent fuel solution is adjusted to 6 M and then reduced at -300 mV (versus Ag/AgCl) through a novel flow-type electrolysis cell. In this work, valence of Pu, Np and Tc in concentrated nitric acid solution after the electroreduction was studied. Electroreduction of 6M HNO3 solution containing Pu, Np and Tc through flow-type electrolysis cell was examined. According to the UV-vis spectra, Pu and Np were reduced to Pu(111) and Np(IV), respectively. With existence of hydrazine, Put stably existed as Pu(III) in 6M HNO3 solution after electroreduction. However, Pu(III) was liable to be oxidized to Pu(IV) in case of coexisting with Tc or Ru by their catalytic reaction. Especially, oxidation ratio of Pu(III) to Pu(IV) with Ru was faster than that with Tc. Anion exchanger column separation of the reduced solution was also performed. Tc was reduced and separated from Pu and Np which were quantitatively recovered from the column by dilute nitric acid solution. Since Pu was eluted together with the Np(IV), it is presumed that the Pu(III) was oxidized to Pu(IV) inside the anion exchanger column. U, Pu and Np were well separated from fission product elements and this is a promising result for recovering these elements together in FBR reprocessing system. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Salt-free reductants have been extensively studied in the Plutonium Uranium Reduction Extraction (PUREX) process for Np(VI) reduction. Hydroxylamine derivatives as a kind of promising salt-free reductants can reduce Np(VI) to Np(V) in nitric acid solution. The reduction reaction and kinetic behavior of Np(VI) to Np(V) by diethylhydroxylamine (DEHA) were studied experimentally. Herein, we explored the reduction mechanism of Np(VI) by DEHA in aqueous solution using scalar-relativistic density functional theory. Four stages are included in the process of Np(VI) reduction to Np(V) by DEHA. The intermediate C2H5N(O)C2H4 is easily hydrolyzed to C2H5NHOH. The third and fourth stages of Np(VI) reduction are via two pathways owing to different H atoms participating successively in the reduction process. The largest energy barrier for the four Np(VI) reduction processes is 12.2 kcal mol−1 for the third stage of Pathway I, consistent with the experimental observations. The Np−Oyl bond distances and spin density on Np elucidate the reduction essence including outer sphere electron transfer or hydrogen atom transfer. The analyses of bonding nature reveal the bonding evolution during the reduction process. This work elucidates the reduction mechanism of Np(VI) by DEHA and provides new insights into the reduction of Np(VI) by hydroxylamine derivatives.

Abstract:High level liquid waste (HLLW) generated through nuclear reaction and spent fuel reprocessing contains the critical transuranic element, neptunium (Np). Efficient recovery of Np from HLLW via TRPO (trialkyl phosphine oxide) process not only benefits radioactive contamination remediation, but also boosts precious nuclear resources recycling. However, such a process including Np(V)-Np(IV) conversion is highly dependent on the coexisting components in HLLW yet the underlying mechanism is still not clear, which adversely restricts Np recovery in multiple scenarios. Herein, effect of concomitant metal ions on the reduction and extraction of Np(V) was studied and molybdenum (Mo) was identified as the vital role in this course. Additionally, in combination with absorption spectral analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and solvent extraction, the promotion in the extraction of Np by Mo is elucidated as the catalytic reduction both in the aqueous phase and the organic phase. This study can help us better understand the redox chemistry of Np in the treatment of HLLW.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the recent research progress of organic reactions catalyzed by four typical earth abundant and 3d metal catalysts: Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni complexes and mainly focused on the reactions in which these 3d metal catalysts exhibited obvious advantages over other catalysts. The mechanism that makes these 3d metal catalysts show unusual properties is another focus of this paper. An outlook on 3d metal complexes-catalyzed organic reactions was also considered.
Electroanalytical Characterization of Np(VI)/Np(V) Redox in a Pentadentate Ligand Environment and Stabilization of Np(V) by Hydrogen Bonding

Abstract:The redox chemistry of the actinyl cations (AnO2 n+) heavily influences their reactivity and speciation in solution, but the redox properties of the actinyls in non-aqueous media have received far less attention than they deserve. Here, the non-aqueous electrochemistry of a chemically reversible Np(VI)/Np(V) redox manifold is reported in both protic (CH3OH) and aprotic (CH3CN) organic media. Using a neutral Np(VI) complex supported by a chelating and strongly donating pentadentate ligand that was fully characterized in prior work, a clean Np(VI)/Np(V) redox couple was found to be accessible under ambient conditions. Coupled electrochemical and spectroscopic studies, as well as simulations of cyclic voltammetry data, confirm the 1e− nature of this couple and establish it to be chemically reversible and nearly electrochemically reversible as well. Bulk electrolysis of a solution of the neutral Np(VI) complex facilitated isolation of the corresponding anionic and monomeric Np(V) species. Data from X-ray diffraction analysis as well as optical and vibrational spectroscopies provide strong evidence in support of metal-centered reduction and the Np(V) oxidation state, findings that are in accord with the measured reduction potentials. Distinctive hydrogen bonding interactions between the terminal (yl) oxo groups and water molecules appear to stabilize the isolated Np(V) species in the solid state, providing insight into the features that afford the uncommon chemically reversible redox encountered in this system.

Abstract:Phosphine-mediated reactions driven by the formation of phosphine oxide have long been recognized as an intriguing approach in forming CC, CN, and C–X (where X represents O, N, S etc.) bonds. In the field of P(III)/P(V) = O redox catalysis, the asymmetric version is still in its infancy. In the past decade, several noteworthy works on asymmetric P(III)/P(V) = O redox catalysis processes revealed their application in various chemically valuable transformations. These papers also elucidated unique features of catalyst structures for catalyst design. In this review, we will delve into these advances, with a specific emphasis on the phosphine skeletons used and the reduction conditions employed, providing future directions in the development of asymmetric P(III)/P(V) = O redox catalysis.

Abstract:Zinc and manganese are widely used as reductants in synthetic methods, such as nickel-catalysed cross-electrophile coupling (XEC) reactions, but their redox potentials are unknown in organic solvents. Here we show how open-circuit potential measurements may be used to determine the thermodynamic potentials of Zn and Mn in different organic solvents and in the presence of common reaction additives. The impact of these Zn and Mn potentials is analysed for a pair of Ni-catalysed reactions, each showing a preference for one of the two reductants. The collective results illuminate the important role of reductant redox potential in Ni-catalysed XEC reactions.

Abstract:Zinc and manganese are widely used as reductants in synthetic methods, such as nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling (XEC) reactions, but their redox potentials are unknown in organic solvents. Here, we show how open-circuit potential measurements may be used to determine the thermodynamic potentials of Zn and Mn in different organic solvents and in the presence of common reaction additives. The impact of these Zn and Mn potentials is analyzed for a pair of Ni-catalyzed reactions, each showing a preference for one of the two reductants.
