Abstract:Ag quantum dots (Ag QDs) sensitized TiO2 nanorod arrays (NRAs)/ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunctions were fabricated by a three-step method and investigated as photocatalysts. Experimental results showed that the novel material exhibited enhanced optical properties and a high degradation rate (for methyl orange) under UV light (109% compared to bare TiO2 NRAs). The high rate was attributed to an increase in the separation of electrons-holes induced by the introduction of the ZnO NPs and the localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) of Ag QDs. The degradation mechanism was elucidated based on the band structure. It is suggested that the TiO2/ZnO/Ag nanostructure developed in our work can provide a new platform for the design of highly efficient photocatalysts.
Surface Morphology, Electrochemical and Electrical Performances of ZnO Thin Films Sensitized with Ag Nanoparticles by UV Irradiation

Abstract:Pure zinc oxide and Ag/ZnO thin films were prepared via two step method. The crystal structure, topography, chemical composition and optical properties were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer and laser micro-Raman spectrometer. XRD, FE-SEM and XPS results indicated that Ag nanoparticles were successfully deposited on the zinc oxide nanorods. Ag nanoparticles on the zinc oxide nanorods would extend the photoabsorption region and reduce the electron transition from CB to VB. The photoelectrochemical performances of ZnO thin film could be effectively enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification. Under sunlight illumination, the photocurrent of the Ag-0.5/ZnO electrode was about three times as large as that of the zinc oxide electrode. The charge transfer process for the Ag/ZnO electrode under sunlight illumination has been discussed. With the increase of Ag content, the resistivity of the sample decreases sharply.
Preparation of SiO2@Au@TiO2 Core–shell Nanostructures and Their Photocatalytic Activities under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:SiO2@Au@TiO2 core-shell nanostructures with tunable decoration amount of Au nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by combining three individual synthesis steps with calcination. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), N-2 adsorption-desorption, X-ray photoelectron emission spectroscopy (XPS), and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of the samples were evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of naproxen in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. Results show that the as-obtained core-shell nanostructure is composed of a SiO2 core with an average diameter of similar to 337 nm, tunable content of Au nanoparticles adsorbed on the surface of SiO2 core, and an outer layer of TiO2 with an average thickness of similar to 7.0 nm. Photocatalysis experiments indicate that the SiO2@Au@TiO2 core-shell nanostructures with Au decoration amount of 0.1 wt% (denotes as SiAuTi-2) exhibit the highest photocatalytic activity since it has the suitable decoration amount of Au nanoparticles for harvesting the visible-light energy and for prohibiting the recombination of free excitons. For fast separation of the catalysts, superparamagnetic cores of Fe3O4 were embedded in the SiO2@Au@TiO2 core-shell nanostructures and hence they can be separated from aqueous solution by an external magnetic field within 10 min. Disordered ZnO nanoparticles with extremely intense deep-level emission and enhanced photocatalytic activity

Abstract:Core-shell nested structure of amorphous carbon coated on crystalline ZnO (carbonized ZnO) was synthesized by sol-gel method as precursor. Disordered ZnO nanoparticles were successfully prepared by annealing the carbonized the ZnO precursor. HRTEM, Raman and XPS analyses showed that the ZnO nanoparticles contain high concentration of oxygen-deficiency defects which enable them exhibiting an abnormal intense deep-level emission centered at green luminescence and spreading over a wide wave length range of 420-660 nm and having a negligible UV emission in its photo luminescence (PL) spectrum. They also show an enhanced photocatalytic activity in degradation of methylene blue (MB). Experiments and theoretical simulation based on density functional theory showed that the intense deep-level emission and improved photocatalytic ability should attributed to their abundant oxygen-deficiency defects in the ZnO nanoparticles introduced by the two-step preparation method. Abstract:Au@ZnO nanospheres with controlled core-shell and yolk-shell features were successfully fabricated through a facile template-based solvothermal method using carbonaceous layers as intermediate. The active carbonaceous layers containing numerous surface functional groups such as OH and C═O play key roles in fabrication of the Au@ZnO nanospheres. The structures of Au@ZnO can easily controlled by adjusting the concentration of Zn ions aqueous solution and/or the size of Au@C microspheres. The synthesis strategy proposed in this paper is also verified to be suitable for fabricating some other Au@metallic oxides nanospheres such as Au@SnO2 and Au@Fe2O3 with controlled structures. Furthermore, due to the synergic effect of the surface plasma resonance effect of Au cores and the large surface area of 122.67 m2 g-1, the Au@ZnO nanospheres with yolk-shell feature exhibite good photocatalytic activity and stability under visible-light irradiation.
Enhanced Photocurrent and Photocatalytic Properties of Porous ZnO Thin Film by Ag Nanoparticles

Abstract:ZnO thin films were deposited using an electrodeposition method and porous morphologies could be achieved by annealing treatment. A variety of Ag nanoparticles were loaded on the surface of the ZnO thin films. Surface morphology, chemical composition, crystal phase and optical properties were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectrophotometer and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Evidence of Ag nanoparticles on the Ag-4/ZnO thin film was be verified by the SEM and XPS measurements. The XRD results indicated that the Ag nanoparticles had little effect on crystallinity of the thin films. The photoresponse and photocatalytic results indicated that the photocurrent and photocatalytic performance could be enhanced by moderate Ag nanoparticles modification on the surface of the ZnO thin film. The best photoresponse and photocatalytic activity in Ag-4/ZnO thin film results from the moderate Ag nanoparticles on the surface of ZnO thin film, which could enhanced separation and suppressed recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs.

ZnO:Au Nanocomposites with High Photocatalytic Activity Prepared by Liquid-Phase Pulsed Laser Ablation

Abstract:This paper presents a simple and feasible method for liquid-phase fabrication of Au-decorated ZnO (ZnO:Au) nanocomposites by two-step liquid-phase pulsed laser ablation. Pristine ZnO were first prepared by pulsed laser ablation of zinc powers in water, and ZnO:Au nanocomposites were then synthesized by decorating the pristine ZnO with Au nanoparticles also via liquid-phase pulsed laser ablation. The prepared ZnO:Au NCs were characterized in liquid and solid phases for morphology, structure and optical properties, and used as photocatalysts for the evaluation of photocatalytic activity. The ZnO:Au nanocomposites are composed of Au nanoparticles surrounded by polycrystalline wurtzite ZnO, present high light absorption in the ultraviolet and visible region and have a plasmonic absorption band around 530 nm. Unlike pristine ZnO which has photocatalytic activity only in the ultraviolet region, the incorporation of Au nanoparticles with ZnO results in high photocatalytic activity in the ultraviolet as well as in the visible region by significantly enhancing the photogeneration of charge carriers and promoting the separation of the photogenerated charge carriers. Using Rhodamine B as a representative organic pollutant, the ZnO:Au nanocomposites were demonstrated to exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance as visible photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants. Compared with pristine ZnO, the rate constant for the photodegradation of Rhodamine B with the ZnO:Au nanocomposites is nearly doubled under visible illumination.

Abstract:The cathodoluminescence (CL) properties including intensity and distribution of the band to band and defect emission of the flower-like ZnO, ZnO/ZnS core–shell and tube-like ZnS nanostructures have been investigated. It is indicated that the Ultraviolet (UV) emission at 380nm of the flower-like ZnO nanostructures due to the band to band emission is weaker than their yellow emission at 600nm induced by interstitial oxygen. Moreover, the UV emission of the ZnO nanorods unevenly distributes from the tip to the end. The UV emission on the tip is stronger than that of others due to the waveguide. On the contrary, the yellow emission at 600nm is uniform. Furthermore, the UV emission of ZnO has been greatly enhanced and the yellow emission has been inhibited by the formation of ZnO/ZnS core–shell nanostructures in the sulfuration process due to the elimination of interstitial oxygen. However, the polycrystalline tube-like ZnS nanostructures shows the uniform and weak defect emission due to S vacancies.
Thermal-desorption Induced Enhancement and Patterning of Ultraviolet Emission in Chemically Grown ZnO

Abstract:A significant enhancement of ultraviolet (UV) emission has been observed in chemically grown ZnO samples using a thermal treatment at 200 degrees C. The intensity of UV emission can reach up to fifty times its initial value, while that of the visible emission decreases to a negligible value. Based on the thermal desorption spectroscopy results, the origin of this effect was attributed to the reduction of non-irradiative centres and hydrogen passivation through desorption of adsorbed water and hydroxyl groups. By precisely controlling the local desorption in ZnO with an electron beam, we have not only created optical nanotags on individual ZnO nanorods, but have also written sub-micrometre UV-emission patterns on ZnO films. It is believed that this patterning technique will extend the applications of ZnO to many other fields, such as high-density optical data storage and high-resolution UV-emission displays.
Self-standing porous Au/CuO nanowires with remarkably enhanced visible light absorption and photocatalytic performance

Abstract:It is a great challenge to design a low-cost CuO photocatalyst with high utilization rate of visible light. Herein, a self-standing Au nanoparticles modified CuO nanowires on the nanoporous CuAu bimetal network (Au/) with hierarchical porous structure was designed through facilely free-dealloying Cu35Zr60Au5 metallic glass (MG) ribbon followed by anodizing technique. The minor addition of Au significantly reduces the size of pore/ligament of the dealloyed product and changes the morphology of CuO nanowires. In addition, the Schottky junction constructed by Au nanoparticles and CuO nanowires efficiently reduces the recombination of photogenerated electrons (e-) and holes (h+). Moreover, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect stemming from the Au nanoparticles is effective in increasing the visible light response and improving the utilization of visible light. The Au/ photocatalysts show outstanding degradation performance and excellent cycling stability for organic dyes. Furthermore, the comprehensive and in-depth understanding on photocatalytic degradation mechanism of RhB is investigated. The novel design of the self-standing Au/ hybrids facilitates the recycling use, which would largely extend commercial application prospects.

Yolk-Shelled Gold@Cuprous Oxide Nanostructures with Hot Carriers Boosting Photocatalytic Performance.

Abstract:Plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) have been commonly used to enhance the photocatalytic activity of Cu2O. Till now, core-shell Au NP@Cu2O composites have been reported in previous studies. Yet, these Au@Cu2O composites only exhibit visible light response. Other special Au nanostructures, such as Au nanorods (NRs) or Au nanobipyramids (NBPs), which possess near-infrared light absorption, were rarely used to endow the near-infrared light response for Cu2O. In this work, for the first time, we used Au NPs, Au NRs, and Au NBPs and employed a handy and universal method to synthesize a series of yolk-shelled Au@Cu2O composites. The results showed that the yolk-shelled Au@Cu2O composites had much higher photocatalytic activity than their solid-shelled ones and pure Cu2O. More importantly, yolk-shelled Au NR@Cu2O and Au NBP@Cu2O composites indeed presented excellent near-infrared light-driven photocatalytic activity, which were impossible for Au NP@Cu2O and pure Cu2O. This outstanding performance for yolk-shelled Au NR@Cu2O and Au NBP@Cu2O could be attributed to the transfer of abundant hot electrons from Au NRs or Au NBPs to Cu2O, and the timely utilization of hot holes on Au through the rich pore channels on their yolk-shelled structure. Furthermore, yolk-shelled Au@Cu2O also showed better stability than pure Cu2O, owing to the migration of the oxidizing holes from Cu2O to Au driven by the built-in electric field. This work may give a guide to fabricate controllable and effective photocatalysts based on plasmonic metals and semiconductors with full solar light-driven photocatalytic activities in the future.
Plasmon-enhanced photocatalytic properties of Au/ZnO nanowires

Abstract:Using sunlight as renewable resource has stimulated the development of sustainable photocatalysts that can collect visible light. Semiconductor nanowire-based photocatalysts have attracted increasing interest due to their unique optical, electronic, and structural advantages. Here, noble metal-semiconductor hybrid Au/ZnO nanowires have been fabricated by chemical vapor deposition method. The hybrid photocatalysts were well characterized by SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, UV–visible spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Compared with ZnO nanowires, Au/ZnO heterostructures exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance due to the synergistic combination of Au and ZnO. Optical properties were modeled to support our interpretation of photocatalytic mechanisms. Our work provides a feasible strategy to prepare plasmonic photocatalysts and will also deepen the understanding of the plasmon enhanced photocatalytic performance in hybrid photocatalysts.

Hybrid Metal-Dual Sulfide Core–shell Nanostructures with Enhanced Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:In this study, we report a facile cation-exchange method to synthesize three different metal@dual sulfide hybrid nanostructures with enhanced photocatalytic properties. Starting from clusters of Au@Ag2S with a poorly crystalline shell, excess amounts of Cd2+, Zn2+ and Pb2+ are used to promote the thermodynamically unfavored cation-exchange under elevated temperature. The change of shell compositions accompanies the disassembly of Au@Ag2S clusters into monodisperse ternary core–shell nanostructures with modulated optical properties. Interestingly, it is found that Au@Ag2S–CdS outperforms Au@Ag2S–ZnS and Au@Ag2S–PbS in the visible-light-driven photodegradation of methylene blue, which can be largely attributed to the improved shell crystallinity, enhanced visible light absorption and appropriate band alignment for charge transfer.
High‐Visible‐Light Photocatalytic Activity of ZnO–Au Nanocomposites Synthesized by a Controlled Hydrothermal Method

Abstract:Powdered Au‐nanoparticle‐modified ZnO (ZnO–Au) nanocomposites having high photocatalytic activity are synthesized via a simple, facile, and controlled method. Through hydrothermal reactions, ZnO nanorods are first grown and the rod surface is then decorated with Au nanoparticles, with the number of Au nanoparticles being adjustable by changing the concentration of tetrachloroauric acid (HAuCl4) in the precursor hydrothermal solution. The ZnO nanorods have an average length of 2 μm and diameter of 300 nm, and the Au nanoparticles are nearly spherical sized between 5 and 10 nm. The ZnO–Au nanocomposites have a higher light absorption capacity and lower carrier recombination rate than the bare ZnO nanorods, which is attributed to the plasmonic sensitizing of Au nanoparticles and makes the synthesized ZnO–Au nanocomposites photocatalytically active. The photocatalytic activity of the ZnO–Au nanocomposites is investigated by degrading rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light illumination, demonstrating that RhB can be photocatalytically degraded more efficiently with the ZnO–Au nanocomposites than with the bare ZnO nanorods, with the rate constant increasing from 6.36 × 10−4 min−1 for the bare ZnO nanorods to 1.19 × 10−2 min−1 for the ZnO–Au nanocomposites. The ZnO–Au nanocomposites also exhibit good photocatalytic stability and can be reused as photocatalysts.
Sandwiched ZnO@Au@CdS Nanorod Arrays with Enhanced Visible-Light-driven Photocatalytical Performance.

Abstract:The development of high-performance photocatalysts is central to efforts focused on taking advantage of solar energy to overcome environmental and energy crises. Integrating different functional materials artfully into nanostructures can deliver more efficient photocatalytic activity. Here, sandwiched ZnO@Au@CdS nanorod films were synthesized via successive ZnO nanorod electrodeposition, Au sputtering and CdS electrodeposition. The as-synthesized composites were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometer, x-ray diffractometer, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Their photocatalytic activity was assessed by degrading Rhodamine B solution under visible light irradiation. ZnO@Au@CdS exhibited better photocatalytic performance than ZnO@CdS throughout the visible light region, and the corresponding enhancement factor of Au nanoparticles was measured as a function of CdS loading amount, and it could reach 190% with CdS deposition for 1 min. The normalized rate constant could reach 0.387 h-1 for ZnO@Au@CdS-1min, which was equivalent to or better than results in reference photocatalysts. The enhancement mechanism of Au nanoparticles was estimated by comparing the monochromatic photocatalytic action spectra with the absorption spectrum of ZnO@Au@CdS, and it was mainly determined by incident photon energy. With selective excitation of Au nanoparticles by incident photons, the excited hot electrons in Au NPs are transferred to the conduction band of ZnO to boost photocatalytic reaction. With selective excitation of CdS, the enhanced interband absorption of CdS and relay station effect of Au nanoparticles should be responsible for the enhanced photocatalytic performance. Our work not only opens the door to the design of efficient supported photocatalysts, but also helps to understand the enhancement mechanism of LSPR effect on the photoelectric conversion of semiconductors.
Observing Growth and Crystallization of Au@ZnO Core–Shell Nanoparticles by In Situ Liquid Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy: Implications for Photocatalysis and Gas-Sensing Applications

Abstract:Recently, heterogeneous nanomaterials have a wide range of applications because of their various combined functions. As a promising material for photocatalysis and gas sensing, core–shell nanoparticles have been in the spotlight in the past few years owing to their distinct electronic properties. However, the reaction mechanisms of core–shell nanoparticles have not been fully explored. In this work, we proposed an electron beam-induced method for the formation of core–shell nanoparticles, and the growth and crystallization mechanisms were investigated through in situ transmission electron microscopy observation. It was found that the electron beam could decompose hexamethylenetetramine and trigger the growth of the CTAB–ZnO shell on the surface of the Au nanoparticles, and the growth exponent of the shell was relatively small compared to that obtained under diffusion-limited conditions, which could be attributed to the viscosity of the solution and the distribution of the nanoparticles. For the crystallization of ZnO shells, the amorphous ZnO shells were transformed into the crystalline state under high-dose-rate electron beam irradiation. The volumetric change in ZnO shells during the crystallization process, which is related to the evolution of CTAB molecules, was discovered in our in situ experiment. Influence of Exciton Localization on the Emission and Ultraviolet Photoresponse of ZnO/ZnS Core-Shell Nanowires.

Abstract:The structural and optical properties of ZnO and ZnO/ZnS core-shell nanowires grown by a wet chemical method are investigated. The near-bandgap ultraviolet (UV) emission of the ZnO nanowires was enhanced by four times after coating with ZnS. The enhanced emission was attributed to surface passivation of the ZnO nanowires and localized states introduced during ZnS growth. The emission of the ZnO and ZnO/ZnS core-shell nanowires was attributed to neutral donor-bound excitons and localized excitons, respectively. Localized states prevented excitons from diffusing to nonradiative recombination centers, so therefore contributed to the enhanced emission. Emission from the localized exciton was not sensitive to temperature, so emission from the ZnO/ZnS core-shell nanowires was more stable at higher temperature. UV photodetectors based on the ZnO and ZnO/ZnS core-shell nanowires were fabricated. Under UV excitation, the device based on the ZnO/ZnS core-shell nanowires exhibited a photocurrent approximately 40 times higher than that of the device based on the ZnO nanowires. The differing photoresponse of the detectors was consistent with the existence of surface passivation and localized states. This study provides a means for modifying the optical properties of ZnO materials, and demonstrates the potential of ZnO/ZnS core-shell nanowires in UV excitonic emission and detection.

Abstract:Hydrothermally processed ZnO nanorods decorated by Au nanoparticles have been demonstrated to exhibit extraordinary optoelectronic properties. With the introduction of Au nanoparticles modification, the ultraviolet responsivity has been greatly enhanced by approximately 200 times, up to 1244 A/W, compared with that of pristine ZnO. This work will be promising for designing high responsivity ZnO photodetector.
