Abstract:The LiBH 4 + mesoporous Fe 2 O 3 (defined as M-Fe 2 O 3 ) mono-doped and LiBH 4 + M-Fe 2 O 3 + TiF 3 co-doped hybrid materials were prepared by ball milling process. A variety of characterization methods, such as thermogravimetric, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and pressure–composition–temperature instrument, were used for examinations of the two materials’ performances of storage/release of hydrogen, catalytic activity, kinetics, and thermodynamics. All the results showed that the M-Fe 2 O 3 prepared in laboratory exhibited a good catalytic effect. Compared with the performance of M-Fe 2 O 3 mono-doped system, M-Fe 2 O 3 and TiF 3 co-doped mode exhibits a better performance using the same additive content. Thus, the M-Fe 2 O 3 and TiF 3 co-doped mode possesses a collaborative catalytic utility with the LiBH 4 hydrogen performance improved, showing a promising application.
Achieving High Dehydrogenation Kinetics and Reversibility of LiBH4 by Adding Nanoporous H-Bn to Destabilize LiH

Abstract:Lithium borohydride (LiBH4) is a potential high-capacity hydrogen storage material but is limited by its high thermal stability and poor reversibility. Nanostructured hexagonal boron nitrides (h-BNs) with thin-layer (TL-BN) and nanoporous (NP-BN) structures have been prepared by treating h-BN in a hydrolysis process of LiBH4 and then mixing with LiBH4 by ball-milling to investigate their catalyzing effect on dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation. Nanostructured h-BN, in particular NP-BN, with an average pore size of 40 nm, significantly promotes the dehydrogenation kinetics, dehydrogenation capacity, and reversibility of LiBH4. For a LiBH4 + NP-BN (mole ratio 1:0.3) composite, the dehydrogenation capacity reaches 13.9 wt % for LiBH4 at 400 degrees C, which is very close to its theoretical one. The cycling capacity could remain stable at, similar to 7.6 wt % with rapid kinetics after de/rehydrogenation cycles under 10 MPa of hydrogen at 400 degrees C. The improved de/hydrogenation performance of LiBH4 depends on the nanoconfinement structure of LiBH4 in NP-BN. After dehydrogenation, a lithium-intercalated h-BN(LixBN) nanocrystal was formed by the reaction of h-BN and LiH. This LixBN nanocrystal confined the dehydrogenation products of the amorphous structure during dehydrogenation. Thus, this nanocrystal-confine-amorphous structure destabilizing LiH and benefiting the rehydrogenation and reversible capacity of the composite.
Composite Cooperative Enhancement on the Hydrogen Desorption Kinetics of Libh4 by Co-Doping with Nbcl5 and Hexagonal Bn

Abstract:LiBH4 is an attractive material for hydrogen storage owing to its high hydrogen capacity of 13.8 wt% capacities. However, its high thermodynamic stability and sluggish kinetics limit its practical application as an onboard hydrogen storage medium. In this work, a synergetic effect of NbCl5 and hexagonal BN (h-BN) on notably improving the dehydrogenation properties of LiBH4 was investigated. It is found that the addition of NbCl5 and h-BN co-dopants can significantly enhance the dehydrogenation kinetics of LiBH4, and the catalytic effect of co-dopant is better than that of NbCl5 or h-BN dopant separately. The NbCl5/h-BN co-doped LiBH4 can release 10.78 wt% hydrogen, which is about 13 times and 5 times more than that of the NbCl5 doped LiBH4 and h-BN doped LiBH4 within 10 min at 400 degrees C, respectively. The major dehydrogenation temperature of NbCl5/h-BN co-doped LiBH4 is reduced to 377 degrees C, much lower than that of ball-milled LiBH4 (464 degrees C). The apparent activation energy (E-a) of hydrogen desorption is reduced from 195.81 kJ/mol of LiBH4 to 122.75 kJ/mol of NbCl5/h-BN co-doped LiBH4. The microstructural results reveal that the catalytic effect of NbCl5/h-BN co-dopant on improving the dehydrogenation kinetics of LiBH4 could be ascribed to the in situ formed nano NbH@h-BN, which serves as the heterogeneous nucleation site to reduce the decomposition activation energy barrier of LiBH4 and shortens the distance of the solid-liquid phase boundary movement of LiBH4 decomposition. Enhanced Hydrogen Storage Properties of LiBH4 Modified by NbF5

Abstract:In this work, the hydriding-dehydriding properties of the LiBH4-NbF5 mixtures were investigated. It was found that the dehydrogenation and reversibility properties of LiBH4 were significantly improved by NbF5. Temperature-programed dehydrogenation (TPD) showed that 5LiBH(4)-NbF5 sample started releasing hydrogen from as low as 60 degrees C, and 4 wt.% hydrogen could be obtained below 255 degrees C. Meanwhile, similar to 7 wt.% H-2 could be reached at 400 degrees C in 20LiBH(4)-NbF5 sample, whereas pristine LiBH4 only released similar to 0.7 wt.% H-2. In addition, reversibility measurement demonstrated that over 4.4 wt.% H-2 could still be released even during the fifth dehydrogenation in 20LiBH(4)-NbF5 sample. The experimental results suggested that a new borohydride possibly formed during ball milling the LiBH4-NbF5 mixtures might be the source of the active effect of NbF5 on LiBH4. Improved hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4 by AlH3 addition

Abstract:Lithium borohydride (LiBH4) possesses a very high hydrogen capacity (18.5 wt%) but suffers from high thermal stability. In this work, the as-prepared aluminium hydride (AlH3) was ball milled with LiBH4 forming 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite to improve the hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4. Hydrogen desorption measurements showed that a hydrogen capacity of 11.2 wt% is obtained from the 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite and the desorption temperature of LiBH4 with AlH3 addition is reduced by more than 30 °C. AlH3 is better as an Al source than the as-received Al in that the hydrogen desorption extent of AlH3-doped LiBH4 reaches 70%, while it is 54% and 61% for the pure LiBH4 and the Al-doped LiBH4. This is due to the brittle and oxide-free nature of AlH3. Microstructure investigations showed that during heating process, the 2LiBH4 + AlH3 composite undergoes AlH3 decomposition forming Al* and releasing hydrogen, followed by the decomposition of LiBH4. LiBH4 will react with Al* forming AlB2 and LiAlB compounds during its decomposition, which contributes to the improved hydrogen desorption properties of LiBH4.
Synergetic Action of 0D/2D/3D N-doped Carbon Nanocages and NbB2 Nanocatalyst on Reversible Hydrogen Storage Performance of Lithium Borohydride

Abstract:A synergetic approach of nanoconfinement coupling with in-situ formed nanocatalysts was developed to fabricate a novel and robust nano-LiBH4 system. The nanoconfining scaffold exhibits an unparalleled 3D hierarchical architecture featuring micro-, meso-, and macro-pores assembled by 2D interconnected nanosheets that consist of 0D hollow nitrogen-doped carbon nanocages. This structure possesses an accumulated pore width of 7.79 nm, extremely high pore volumes of 3.16 cm3/g, and a theoretical loading capacity of 67.9 wt% for LiBH4. The in-situ formed NbB2 species transformed from initial NbF5 nanoparticles is confirmed as the final active nanocatalyst. It is worth mentioning that the defective N heteroatoms within the scaffold can serve the role of coordinating with Nb cations and weaken the B-H bonds as supported by the DFT calculations. With an optimized loading of 50 wt % LiBH4, the initial dehydrogenation temperatures can be reduced to 140.6 degrees C, and the system can rapidly release 7.55 wt% H2 at 320 degrees C within 39 min. Furthermore, the nanoconfined system exhibits excellent lowtemperature reversibility, retaining 93 % of its capacity after 20 cycles at 300 degrees C. This study provides innovative perspectives on the design of novel scaffold structures doped with defective heteroatoms for the nanoconfinement and synergetic catalysis of de/rehydrogenation for metal borohydrides.
The Milled LiBH 4 / H- BN Composites Exhibiting Unexpected Hydrogen Storage Kinetics and Reversibility

Abstract:The effect of nanoscale h-BN addition by milling on the de-/re-hydrogenation of LiBH4 was investigated. With the increasing h-BN ratio, the milled LiBH4/h-BN composites showed lower dehydrogenation temperature. For the LiBH4-3BN composite (mole ratio 1:3), the onset dehydrogenation temperature was reduced from 290 degrees C for the milled pure LiBH4 down to 175 degrees C, and the initial dehydrogenation capacity could reach 3.1 wt.% (equivalent to 13.7 wt.% of the component LiBH4) within similar to 2 h at 400 degrees C. Under moderate rehydrogenation conditions of 400 degrees C and 10 MPa H-2 pressure, the 2nd and 3th cyclic dehydrogenation capacity of LiBH4-3BN composite almost remained unchanged, indicating remarkably improved rehydrogenation reversibility in comparison to milled pure LiBH4. FTIR analysis reveals specific interaction between h-BN and LiBH4 probably originating from the polar mechanism between polarizable B-H bond and B-N bond, which should be responsible for the enhanced dehydrogenation kinetics and reversibility. This work demonstrates the specific catalytic role of nanoscale h-BN and its potential for reversible hydrogen storage by compositing with high-capacity borohydrides. Abstract:Novel porous hollow carbon nanospheres (HCNS) have been synthesized and utilized as scaffold for LiBH4-Mg(BH4)(2) eutectic borohydride (LMBH). Large loading amounts of LMBH (33, 50 and 67 wt%) have been melt-infiltrated into HCNS, and the significantly improved dehydrogenation properties have been discovered. The LMBH@HCNS composites not only exhibit high actual dehydrogenation amounts and fast hydrogen desorption rates, but also an increased reversible hydrogen storage capacities after three cycles without obvious degradation. Further structural tests have revealed that the over-infiltrated LMBH covering the spherical surface of HCNS could also contribute to the improved hydrogen storage behaviors, due to a strong interfacial adhesion effect that avoid LMBH from aggregation during de/rehydrogenation cycles. Abstract:In this study, hydrogen release and uptake properties for composites of LiBH4 with the conjugated polymer poly(p-phenylene) (PPP) were investigated. The incorporation of LiBH4 with PPP led to a significant destabilization effect, decreasing the dehydrogenation temperature of LiBH4 by 100 degrees C. Moreover, LiBH4 could be regenerated at 450 degrees C under 9.0 MPa H-2. By thorough analyses using XRD, HRTEM, FTIR, Raman, XPS as well as B-11 MAS NMR, the dehydrogenation product of LiBH4+PPP and the regeneration mechanism of LiBH4 are elucidated. Also the reason of capacity degradation is discussed based on the analysis results. The formation condition of LiBH4 was significantly moderated due to the presence of a simultaneously formed amorphous mixture of boron and carbon, which sheds light on the improvement of LiBH4 reversibility. Abstract:LiBH4 was confined into activated charcoal (AC) by melt infiltration method (MI), and its effects on the hydrogen sorption properties were investigated. The N2 adsorption results reveal that melt infiltration method can effectively incorporated LiBH4 into AC. It can maintain the structural integrity of the scaffold and ensure the confinement effect. The nano-confined LiBH4/AC starts to release hydrogen at around 190 °C, which is 160 °C lower than that of pure LiBH4, and reaches a hydrogen desorption capacity of 13.6% at 400 °C. When rehydrogenated under the condition of 6 MPa H2 and 350 °C, it has a reversible hydrogen storage capacity of 6%, while pure LiBH4 shows almost no reversible hydrogen storage capacity under the same condition. Mass spectrometry analysis (MS) results suggest that no diborane or other impurity gases are released in the decomposition process. The apparent activation energy of dehydrogenation of LiBH4 after confinement into AC decreases from 156.0 to 121.1 kJ/mol, which leads to the eminent enhancement of dehydrogenation kinetics of LiBH4.
Improved hydrogen storage properties of LiBH 4 confined with activated charcoal by ball milling

Abstract:In order to enhance the hydrogen storage properties of LiBH 4 , activated charcoal (AC) was used as the scaffold to confine LiBH 4 in this paper. Ball milling was used to prepare LiBH 4 /AC composites. Experimental results show that dehydrogenation properties of ball-milled LiBH 4 /AC (LiBH 4 /AC-BM) are greatly improved compared with that of pristine LiBH 4 , ball-milled LiBH 4 (LiBH 4 -BM) and hand-milled LiBH 4 /AC (LiBH 4 /AC-HM). The onset dehydrogenation temperature of LiBH 4 for LiBH 4 /AC-BM is around 160 °C, which is 170 °C lower than that of pristine LiBH 4 . At around 400 °C, LiBH 4 /AC-BM finishes the dehydrogenation with a hydrogen capacity of 13.6 wt%, which is approximately the theoretical dehydrogenation capacity of pure LiBH 4 (13.8 wt%), while the dehydrogenation processes for LiBH 4 -BM and LiBH 4 /AC-BM do not finish even when they were heated to 600 °C. The isothermal dehydriding measurements show that it takes only 15 min for LiBH 4 /AC-BM to reach a dehydrogenation capacity of 10.1 wt% at 350 °C, whereas the pristine LiBH 4 and the LiBH 4 /AC-HM release hydrogen less than 1 wt% under the same conditions. The dehydrogenation process and the effect of AC were discussed.

Abstract:To improve the dehydrogenation properties of LiBH4, a novel hydrogen storage system, LiBH4-Li3AlH6, was synthesized by mechanical ball milling. The dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation properties of LiBH4-Li3AlH6 (molar rato: 1: 1) composites were studied via thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mass spectral analysis (MS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The experimental results show that the hydrogen desorption capacity reaches 8.5 wt% and that the whole dehydrogenation is a three-step process: (1) a decomposition reaction Li3AlH6 -> 3LiH + Al + 3/2H(2), occurring at 160 degrees C; (2) formation of an intermediate product from 300 degrees C to 350 degrees C, and then subsequent transformation into Al, AlB2, and H-2. (2LiBH(4) + Al -> [Li2B2AlH4] -> x(AlB2 + 2LiH + 3H(2)) + (1-x) [Li2B2AlH4], (0 < x < 1)); and (3) final dehydrogenation of LiH + Al -> LiAl + 1/2H(2), occurring at 415 degrees C, with sequential decomposition of the remaining intermediate ((1-x)[Li2B2AlH4]->(1-x)(AlB2 + 2LiH + 3H(2)), (0 < x < 1)). Abstract:Chemical complex borohydride is a promising hydrogen storage material due to its large gravimetric and volumetric hydrogen capacities. However, the high dehydrogenation temperature and sluggish kinetics still place strong restrictions on its practical application in the hydrogen storage field. In this work, a synergetic approach of partial cation substitution and catalysis is developed to enhance the hydrogen storage properties of LiBH4. The Li/Mg based dual-cation borohydride (LiMg2(BH4)5, LMBH) was successfully synthesized by wet chemical ball milling of LiBH4 and MgCl2. The optimal (LMBH (4.5:1) sample, LiBH4 and MgCl2 in molar ratios of 4.5:1, possesses a maximum hydrogen desorption capacity (11.27 wt%) and the outstanding initial decomposition temperature (∼250 °C). Importantly, the LMBH (4.5:1) doped with TiF3 shows a remarkable onset dehydrogenation temperature as low as 97.2 °C, which is about 190 °C lower than that of pristine LiBH4. The LMBH (4.5:1) doped with TiF3 system releases 7.98 wt% H2 within 170 min below 350 °C. And the dehydrogenation product of doped composite can reversibly absorb ∼4.72 wt% H2 at a relatively moderate temperature of 280 °C, which is substantially lower than the reversible hydrogen absorption temperature of previous modified borohydride systems. Based on the structural characteristic analyses, the TiF3 reacts with LMBH (4.5:1) to in-situ form actual catalytic components of TiB2 and TiH2 as the actual catalysts for LMBH (4.5:1), resulting in the improved hydrogen re/dehydrogenation properties. The synergetic modification of Li/Mg dual-cation substitution and TiB2/TiH2 catalysis may lead to the development of light-metal borohydrides with outstanding hydrogen storage properties.
Significant Destabilization Effects of Metal Borides on LiBH4

Abstract:In this paper,we report our recent observations of the significant decreases in the dehydrogenation temperature of LiBH4 by the addition of metal borides MB2(M=Mg,Ti,Zr)and MB6(M=Ca,La).MB2 addition reduced the dehydrogenation temperature from about 450℃for pure LiBH4 to 350℃.MB6 demonstrated more significant destabilizing effects on LiBH4.The hydrogen storage reversibility of LiBH4 was also significantly improved due to the presences of the metal borides.The results of XRD,FT-IR,DSC and MS analysis suggest that the metal borides mainly acted as the catalysts for the first dehydrogenation of LiBH4.They participated in the hydrogenation reaction and could be regenerated during the cycling.

Abstract:A significant enhancement in the dehydrogenation performance of LiBH4 is achieved by modifying with fluorographite (FGi). In-depth investigations show that the dehydrogenation thermodynamics and kinetics of LiBH4 are strongly improved by ball milling LiBH4 with FGi. The ball-milled LiBH4-FGi (mass ratio of 1:1) composite starts to release hydrogen without impurity gas at around 180 degrees C, and obtains a hydrogen desorption capacity of 7.2 wt% below 200 degrees C in seconds, which is improved dramatically compared with pristine ball-milled LiBH4. Microscopic morphology indicates that numerous similar to 90 nm spots formed on the surface of FGi. Based on the microstructure analyses combined with hydrogen storage performances, the prominent effect of FGi is largely attributed to the nanomodifying effect and the exothermic reaction between LiBH4 and FGi during the dehydrogenation process. Furthermore, partial reversibility of the LiBH4-FGi composite has been demonstrated and the mechanism underlying the cycling capacity loss is discussed. The use of FGi may shed light on future study on searching for new strategies to improve both the thermodynamics and kinetics of light-metal complex hydrides. Remarkable irreversible and reversible dehydrogenation of LiBH4 by doping with nanosized cobalt metalloid compounds

Abstract:Nanosized cobalt sulfide and cobalt boride were synthesized and doped into LiBH4 to improve the dehydrogenation properties of this important candidate for hydrogen storage. With respect to CoSx doping, the dehydrogenation temperature (peak temperature observed by mass spectrometry) of pristine LiBH4 can be reduced from 440 °C to 175 °C with a maximum capacity of 6.7 wt% at 50% doping. Unfortunately, B2H6 is liberated and the process is not reversible because the CoSx dopant reacts with LiBH4 to form more stable compounds. By changing CoSx to CoBx, a reversible dehydrogenation was realized with greatly improved reversibility. The dehydrogenation temperature was reduced to 350 °C with a maximum capacity of 8.4 wt% at 50% doping amount. It is very significant that CoBx is stable and the release of B2H6 is eliminated. A reversible hydrogen desorption of about 5.3 wt% can be achieved with a LiBH4 + 50% CoBx mixture under a mild rehydrogenation condition of 400 °C at 10 MPa H2. It is obvious that CoSx acts as a reactant even though the dehydrogenation is greatly enhanced, while CoBx behaves as a catalyst significantly promoting the dehydrogenation and reversibility of LiBH4.

Abstract:Two N-containing hydrocarbon based polymers polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polyaniline (PANI) were found to be able to destabilize LiBH4, a potential hydrogen storage material, resulting in larger hydrogen capacities of more than 10 wt% with peak dehydrogenation temperatures around 344 degrees C. The results suggest that a co-destabilization effect was achieved through the interaction of BeH and CeH bonds, which was further enhanced due to the presence of nitrogen atoms in polymers. After rehydrogenation of the dehydrogenated products, LiBH4 was found to be regenerated to a large extent in both of the LiBH4+polymer composites. Detailed analysis including XRD, FTIR, DSC-TG-MS, HRTEM, Raman, XPS and solid-state B-11 MAS NMR was performed to elucidate the dehydrogenation and rehydrogenation mechanisms in these composites. The results provide considerable information about interaction mechanisms among BeH, CeH, N-H and C N bonds and also shed lights on the enhancement of LiBH4 dehydrogenation and reversibility. Abstract:Through first-principles calculations, we found doping carbon atoms onto BN monolayers (BNC) could significantly strengthen the Li bond on this material. Unlike the weak bond strength between Li atoms and the pristine BN layer, it is observed that Li atoms are strongly hybridized and donate their electrons to the doped substrate, which is responsible for the enhanced binding energy. Li adsorbed on the BNC layer can serve as a high-capacity hydrogen storage medium, without forming clusters, which can be recycled at room temperature. Eight polarized H(2) molecules are attached to two Li atoms with an optimal binding energy of 0.16-0.28 eV/H(2), which results from the electrostatic interaction of the polarized charge of hydrogen molecules with the electric field induced by positive Li atoms. This practical carbon-tuned BN-Li complex can work as a very high-capacity hydrogen storage medium with a gravimetric density of hydrogen of 12.2 wt%, which is much higher than the gravimetric goal of 5.5 wt % hydrogen set by the U.S. Department of Energy for 2015.
