Abstract:Colloidal micro-Newton thrusters, designed for the NASA ST7 test package with a thrust range of 5 – 30 μN, are used as a back-up actuator for the LISA Pathfinder spacecraft to stabilize the spacecraft from spinning status after its separation from the propulsion module. Starting from an already defined controller design, this paper investigates the further potentials and capabilities of improving the performance with less stressful usage of the thrusters. The specific characteristics of the available control torque envelopes are examined in 3-dimentsional space, alternative control strategies and solutions are proposed and assessed via numerical simulation. Results show a great potential of performing the same tasks with ca 62% of the time, 61% of total thrust impulse, and 61% of the total thruster firing cycles, as compared to the previous design. With these demonstrated improvements, the proposed alternative control strategy, 3-axis control, has been endorsed by the prime contractor, whilst the other proposed changes are currently under final tuning and assessments for engineering implementation.
