Abstract:One of the challenges in the control system design for LISA Pathfinder spacecraft is the attitude control of the spacecraft based on micro-Newton electrical thrusters. This paper first discusses the attitude control system design and its performance in nominal case. Emphases are then given to investigate the potentials and capabilities of the FEEP thruster to stabilize the spacecraft under multiple thruster failures. An alternative control strategy is introduced to improve the performance thus to cope with multiple known failures. To improve the performances under multiple unknown failures, which become mission critical in certain failure scenario, two approaches are further investigated. One is to rely on an innovative FDIR algorithm to identify and separate the failures based on assessing the dynamic behavior of the spacecraft during early de-nutation and de-spin phases. The other is to retune the controllers based on engineering insights to the control responses. With the proposed control strategy and new approaches, the FEEP thrusters can still stabilize and control the spacecraft attitude with up to any random 3 thruster failures and any one cluster (4 thrusters) failure. The proposed new control strategies are currently under engineering implementation.
