Abstract:Spin waves are collective excitations propagating in the magnetic medium with ordered magnetizations. Magnonics, utilizing the spin wave (magnon) as an information carrier, is a promising candidate for low-dissipation computation and communication technologies. We discover that, due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, the scattering behavior of the spin wave at a magnetic domain wall follows a generalized Snell's law, where two magnetic domains work as two different mediums. Similar to optical total reflection that occurs at water-air interfaces, spin waves may experience total reflection at the magnetic domain walls when their incident angle is larger than a critical value. We design a spin-wave fiber using a magnetic domain structure with two domain walls, and demonstrate that such a spin-wave fiber can transmit spin waves over long distances by total internal reflections, in analogy to an optical fiber.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the propagation of spin waves confined in a Neel-type ferrimagnetic domain-wall channel in the presence of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). We observe a nonreciprocal spin-wave propagation induced by the antisymmetric chiral DMI, which can be manipulated by changing the net angular momentum or the polarity of domain walls. Considering that the band gap of spin waves excited in domain walls is significantly reduced, the three-magnon processes are applied to nonlinearly detect this bounded mode in the narrow channel, which enables us to quantify the frequency and the wave vector by analyzing the spectrum of the transmitted spin wave outside the domain wall and to determine the DMI strength. These findings are useful for fabricating energy-efficient magnetic devices and measuring the interfacial DMI in ultra narrow ferrimagnetic stripes.

Abstract:The nonreciprocity of spin waves refers to the phenomenon that spin waves propagating in opposite directions display different features. This phenomen becomes a fundamental requirement for implementing magnon logic architectures. The nonreciprocal transportion of spin waves induced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) has been studied extensively. It is characterized by a shift of spin-wave dispersion. Here we report another feature of the DMI-induced nonreciprocity, i.e., the nonreciprocal spin wave damping. We find that the spin waves propagating with opposite wave vectors in magnetic domain wall have different damping, which is frequency dependent and especially evident in low frequancy range. For spin waves with sufficient low frequencies (around 1 GHz), the damping nonreciprocity is so extreme that spin waves can transport only in one direction, thus realizing the spin-wave diode function. The theoretical predictions are validated by micromagnetic simulations. The findings in this work points out a new feature of DMI-induced spin wave nonreciprocity and may be exploited for designing novel magnonic devices.

Abstract:The influence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in ultra-thin ferromagnetic films and chiral magnonic crystals on the behavior of spin waves is reviewed. During the last decade, it has been shown, both theoretically and experimentally, that this anisotropic exchange interaction produces non-reciprocal features on the spin-wave spectrum of a magnetic system, a phenomenon that occurs both for bulk and interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling. More recently, the concept of a chiral magnonic crystal has been introduced, where the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is periodic. The effect of this periodicity include additional features such as flat bands, indirect gaps, and an unusual spin-wave evolution.

Abstract:We reveal the cooperative effect of coherent and dissipative magnon-photon couplings in an open cavity magnonic system, which leads to nonreciprocity with a considerably large isolation ratio and flexible controllability. Furthermore, we discover unidirectional invisibility for microwave propagation, which appears at the zero-damping condition for hybrid magnon-photon modes. A simple model is developed to capture the generic physics of the interference between coherent and dissipative couplings, which accurately reproduces the observations over a broad range of parameters. This general scheme could inspire methods to achieve nonreciprocity in other systems.
Nonreciprocity of spin waves in a double layer ferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

Abstract:In this paper, boundary conditions for Landau-Lifshitz equations at the interface between two ferromagnets with different Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions are derived. We calculated and verified the analytical expression for the energy flux density continuity for the spin-wave propagation through the interface between two ferromagnets with/without Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions considering the boundary conditions mentioned. Analytical expressions for reflection, transmission coefficients and the nonreciprocity factor are calculated in the case of spin-wave propagation through a double layer ferromagnet with/without Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the first/second layer. Two principally different types of nonreciprocity effects for spin waves are revealed in such a double layer system. The material parameters of a double layer ferromagnet with/without Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the first/second layer are found for which the extremely high nonreciprocity factor (>10) is expected according to the results of calculations. The results of the paper deepen the knowledge about the spin-wave propagation control in magnonic devices.

Abstract:We theoretically study the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) on the focusing of a spin-wave lens that is constructed by a circular interface between two magnetic films. We analytically derive the generalized Snell's law in the curved geometry and the position of the focal point which exhibits a peculiar off-axial focusing behavior. We uncover a strong dependence of the focal point on both the material parameters and the frequency of incident spin waves. Full micromagnetic simulations compare well with theoretical predictions. Our findings would be helpful to manipulate spin waves in chiral magnets and to design functional magnonic devices.

Abstract:The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) has attracted considerable recent attention owing to the intriguing physics behind it and the fundamental role it plays in stabilizing magnetic solitons, such as magnetic skyrmions and chiral domain walls. A number of experimental efforts have been devoted to probe the DMI, among which the most popular method is the Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy (BLS) to measure the frequency difference of spin waves with opposite wave vectors +/- k perpendicular to the in-plane magnetization m. Such a technique, however, is not applicable to the cases of k || m, since the spin-wave reciprocity is recovered then. For a narrow magnetic strip, it is also difficult to measure the DMI strength using BLS because of the spatial resolution limit of lights. To fill these gaps, we propose to probe the DMI via the propagation of spin waves in ferromagnetic films. We show that the DMI can cause the noncollinearity of the group velocities of spin waves with +/- k || m. In heterogeneous magnetic thin films with different DMIs, negative refractions of spin waves emerge at the interface under proper conditions. These findings enable us to quantify the DMI strength by measuring the angle between the two spin-wave beams with +/- k || m in homogeneous film and by measuring the incident and negative refraction angles in heterogeneous films. For a narrow magnetic strip, we propose a nonlocal scheme to determine the DMI strength via nonlinear three-magnon processes. We implement theoretical calculations and micromagnetic simulations to verify our ideas. The results presented here are helpful for future measurement of the DMI and for designing novel spin-wave spintronic devices.

Abstract:Spin-Cherenkov effect enables strong excitations of spin waves (SWs) with nonlinear wave dispersions. The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) results in anisotropy and nonreciprocity of SWs propagation. In this work, we study the effect of the interfacial DMI on SW Cherenkov excitations in permalloy thin-film strips within the framework of micromagnetism. By performing micromagnetic simulations, it is shown that coherent SWs are excited when the velocity of a moving magnetic source exceeds the propagation velocity of the SWs. Moreover, the threshold velocity of the moving magnetic source with finite DMI can be reduced compared to the case of zero DMI. It thereby provides a promising route towards efficient spin wave generation and propagation, with potential applications in spintronic and magnonic devices.
Spin photo-currents in antiferromagnets with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions

Abstract:We theoretically investigate spin photo-currents in two types of antiferromagnetic insulators with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interactions: one with staggered DM interactions and the other with uniform DM interactions. The magnon spectrum for each system thus becomes asymmetric with respect to the propagation direction of magnons, which may be utilized to enhance the nonlinear spin conductivity. Indeed, we show that the spin conductivity in each system could be up to the order of 10 nJ/( ) when the system is coupled to an AC magnetic field transverse to the ordered spins. Due to the special magnon dispersion, however, an extra static field is required to achieve a high conductivity in the system with staggered DM interactions. The results could be useful in opto-spintronics based on magnetic excitations.

Abstract:The Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in ultrathin ferromagnets can result in nonreciprocal propagation of spin waves. We examine theoretically how spin wave power flow is influenced by this interaction. We show that the combination of the dipole-dipole and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions can result in unidirectional caustic beams in the Damon-Eshbach geometry. Morever, self-generated interface patterns can also be induced from a point-source excitation.

Abstract:A theory is presented to study the effect of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions (DMIs) on the static and dynamic magnetic properties in single-layered ferromagnetic nanorings. A microscopic (Hamiltonian-based) approach is used that also includes the antisymmetric DMI besides the competing symmetric (bilinear) exchange interactions, magnetic dipole–dipole interactions, and an applied magnetic field. Here, the axial vector of the DMI is taken to be in the plane of the nanoring (by contrast with earlier studies) and we explore cases where it is either parallel or perpendicular to the in-plane magnetic field. Significantly, with this orientation for the DMI axial vector, the inhomogeneous static magnetization is tilted to have a component perpendicular to the plane giving a surface texture. This effect is studied in both the low-field vortex and high-field onion states. There is a consequent modification to the discrete set of spin-wave modes in both states through their frequencies and spatial amplitudes. We present combined analytical and numerical results for the static properties and dynamical magnetization in ferromagnetic nanorings, including the variation with applied field.

Abstract:Objectives . Nonreciprocal spin wave effects can manifest themselves in metalized films of ferrite garnets. By studying the dynamics of spin waves in micro- and nano-scale magnetic films, the possibility of using multilayer dielectric films of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) to ensure the manifestation of the nonreciprocity effect is demonstrated. This approach offers advantages compared to the use of a layered YIG/metal structure due to significantly lower spin-wave losses in the two-layer YIG film consisting of layers with different values of magnetization. Such films can be used in logical elements to create controllable Mach-Zehnder interferometers based on magnonic principles. The purpose of this work is to reconcile the concept of nonreciprocal spin-wave propagation of a signal with the simultaneous manifestation of the effects arising from the propagation of spin waves in microwave guides formed by finite-width YIG films. Methods . We used an experimental microwave spectroscopy method based on a vector network analyzer along with a finite difference method to perform a numerical simulation of the dispersion characteristics of spin waves in two-layer magnonic microwave guides. An analytical model was also used to obtain a dispersion equation based on the magnetostatic approximation. Results . Based on measurements of the amplitude and phase responses, the possible coexistence of two frequency ranges for the propagation of a spin-wave signal in a two-layer magnon microwave guide based on a YIG film formed by two layers with different values of saturation magnetization was demonstrated. Regimes of nonreciprocal propagation of a spin-wave signal were revealed. A numerical model was using to study the formation mechanisms of spin wave modes in the spectrum of a two-layer structure formed due to the finite dimensions of the microwave guide. An analytical model was used to evaluate the transformation of the mode spectrum. The experimental data are in good agreement with the results of the proposed numerical and analytical models. Conclusions . The possibility of frequency-selective propagation of spin waves in a magnon microwaveguide consisting of two layers with different saturation magnetization values is demonstrated. Multimode propagation of spin waves can occur inside a two-layer structure in two frequency ranges. At the same time, this process is accompanied by a strong nonreciprocity of spin-wave signal propagation, which manifests itself in a change in the amplitude and phase responses when the direction of the external magnetic field is reversed. The proposed two-layer spin-wave waveguide concept can be used in the manufacture of magnon interconnects and magnon interferometers with the support of multiband regimes of operation.
Suppression of the spin waves nonreciprocity due to interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction by lateral confinement in magnetic nanostructures

Abstract:Despite the huge recent interest towards chiral magnetism related to the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction (iDMI) in layered systems, there is a lack of experimental data on the effect of iDMI on the spin waves eigenmodes of laterally confined nanostructures. Here we exploit Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) to analyze the spin wave eigenmodes of non-interacting circular and elliptical dots, as well as of long stripes, patterned starting from a Pt(3.4 nm)/CoFeB(0.8 nm) bilayer, with lateral dimensions ranging from 100 nm to 400 nm. Our experimental results, corroborated by micromagnetic simulations based on the GPU-accelerated MuMax3 software package, provide evidence for a strong suppression of the frequency asymmetry between counter-propagating spin waves (corresponding to either Stokes or anti-Stokes peaks in BLS spectra), when the lateral confinement is reduced from 400 nm to 100 nm, i.e. when it becomes lower than the light wavelength. Such an evolution reflects the modification of the spin wave character from propagating to stationary and indicates that the BLS based method of quantifying the i-DMI strength from the frequency difference of counter propagating spin waves is not applicable in the case of magnetic elements with lateral dimension below about 400 nm.

Selective Spin Wave Non-reciprocity in Engineered Chiral Magnonic Crystal without Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Abstract:Chirality is pivotal in magnonics, particularly for achieving spin wave non-reciprocity which is critical in advancing spin wave based communication and logic operations. In general, chirality in magnetic systems is realized through the interfacial antisymmetric exchange interaction, namely, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI), which is an intrinsic phenomenon occurring at the buried interface of ferromagnet and heavy metal. In this work, using micromagnetic simulations, we present a new route to achieve spin wave nonreciprocity using an engineered chiral magnonic crystal, where we artificially created in-plane twisted spin textures by imposing certain handedness in the structural geometry. The manipulation of the relative arrangement of these chiral enantiomers led to spin wave non-reciprocity, which could be tuned by selecting different channels within the crystal, with additional versatility in the resonant mode frequency. Further adjustment of the external magnetic field strength confirms that the spin wave directionality originates from the spin texture. This enables additional control over the band gap and mode propagation characteristics by external field tuning. Our work provides a novel and innovative route to simultaneously access opposite spin wave directions in consecutive channels, which makes this system competent for real on-chip magnonic diode, with predefined paths for counter-propagating information.

Abstract:Spin waves (SWs) in magnetic nanotubes have shown interesting nonreciprocal properties in their dispersion relation, group velocity, frequency linewidth and attenuation lengths. The reported chiral effects are similar to those induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, but originating from the dipole-dipole interaction. Here we show, that the isotropic-exchange interaction can also induce chiral effects in the SW transport; the so-called Berry phase of SWs. We demonstrate that with the application of magnetic fields, the nonreciprocity of the different SW modes can be tuned between the fully dipolar governed and the fully exchange governed cases, as they are directly related to the underlaying equilibrium state. In the helical state, due to the combined action of the two effects every single sign combination of the azimuthal and axial wave vectors leads to different dispersion, allowing for a very sophisticated tuning of the SW transport. A disentanglement of the dipole-dipole and exchange contributions so far was not reported for the SW transport in nanotubes. Furthermore, we propose a device based on coplanar waveguides that would allow to selectively measure the exchange or dipole induced SW nonreciprocities. In the context of magnonic applications, our results might encourage further developments in the emerging field of 3D magnonic devices using curved magnetic membranes.

Abstract:We investigated spin wave (SW) propagation and emission in thin film systems with strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) utilizing micromagnetic simulation. The effect of DMI on SW propagation is analogous to the flow of magnetic medium leading to the spin Doppler effect, and a spin-polarized current can enhance or suppress it. It is demonstrated that, for a Doppler velocity exceeding a critical value, a shock-wave-like emission of SWs with a cone-shape emerges from a magnetically irregular point as the cone apex. The cone angle is quantitatively determined by the DMI-induced Doppler velocity. Combining the interfacial DMI and the spin-polarized current, a constant SW emission by a static source is demonstrated, which provides a promising route to efficiently generate SWs with tunable frequency.
Nonreciprocal spin-wave transport in an asymmetric three-dimensional magnonic coupler

Abstract:Here, we present a study investigating the effects of spin-wave coupling in a structure composed of parallel-oriented magnonic stripes fabricated from thin films of yttrium-iron garnet. The structure consists of two parallel stripes separated by a sufficiently small gap to enable dipolar coupling, while a third stripe is positioned atop the lateral system, forming an asymmetric three-dimensional (3D) coupler geometry. Through the utilization of Brillouin light-scattering spectroscopy, we experimentally demonstrate the transport of spin waves along the asymmetric 3D coupler. Additionally, by employing experimental techniques, we explore the nonreciprocal propagation of spin waves in the considered structure by reversing the polarity of the external magnetic field. To gain further insights, we employ micromagnetic modeling and the finite-element method to obtain the eigenmode spectra of the asymmetric 3D coupler. Our results show that reversing the polarity of the external magnetic field induces coupling between the magnetic stripes. We elucidate the characteristics of lateral and vertical spin-wave transport, as well as nonreciprocal spin-wave propagation within the investigated structure. Notably, in the asymmetric 3D coupler, the coupling length diminishes, offering the potential to enhance the density of functional elements in the design of three-dimensional magnonic networks. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevApplied.21.024031 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), one of antisymmetric exchanges, originates from the combination of low structural symmetry and large spin-orbit coupling and favors magnetization rotations with fixed chirality. Herein, this work reports a DMI-like behavior in permalloy via coupled vortices in confined structures. Under the in-plane magnetic fields, continuous reversals of different coupled vortices are directly observed by in situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, and reproduced by complementary micromagnetic simulations. The statistical results show that coupled vortices with opposite chirality appear more frequently with the frequency up to about 60%. Such an asymmetric phenomenon mainly arises from a DMI-like behavior, associated with the increased total energy difference between different ground-state coupled vortices. Moreover, in the reversal process, the junction between disks accelerates the annihilation of vortices moving toward it and is also the starting point of vortex nucleation. These results provide an effective method to generate a DMI-like behavior in magnetic systems with symmetry breaking surface and benefit the future development of vortex-based spintronic devices.
