Abstract:In order to meet the needs of orchard insect pest monitoring and control programme in our country, we have synthesized two active compounds of the sex pheromones of the peach truit moth (Carposina niponensis Walsingbam)Z-7-eicosen-11-one (7) and Z-7-nonadeoen-11-one (8). These two compounds (7, 8)were prepared by a modified Tamada's method. Starting from 1-bromohexane, She nitrile 4 which is an important intermediate in Tamada's synthesis was obtained via a four-step procedure, namely, the interaction of 1-bromohexane with sodium acetylide in liquid ammonia at low temperature to give octyne-1 (1) (yield 61%). Compound 1 could be converted into 3-decyn-1-ol (2) by the Grignard coupling reaction between octynic magnesium bromide from 1 and ethylene oxide (74%). Compound 2 was treased with tosyl chloride in pyridine at 20℃ in 2.5 hr to give the tosylab 3 (yield 94%). 3 was treated with potassium cyanide in dimethyl sulfoxide to give the nitrile 4 directly (65%), so that 3-decyny bromide intermediate used in Tamada's route was omitted. The nitrile 4 wasl transformed into the final products by the known method which consists of a twostep procedure. 5 and 6 could be purified by crystallization from petroleum ether. A small amount of the trans-isomers of 7 and 8 which was produced during partial hydrogenation could be removed by crystallization at low temperature or by column chromatography on silica gel impregnated with silver nitrate. The two cis-isomers are colorless liquids. During the autumn of 1978 and the summer of 1979, the synthetic pheromones have been tested in many orchards in northern China. The field trials showed that the synthetic pheromones give strong attractant activity to the male peach fruit moth.
