Abstract:The co-assembly process is an effective approach to construct hierarchically nanostructured soft materials, but morphological transition of co-assemblies upon external stimuli, particularly the "green" trigger CO2 , is not unraveled yet. Here, a segmented copolymer, poly(styrene)-block-poly[(4-vinyl pyridine)-random-((2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)] (P1), is used to co-assemble in the mixed solvent of dimethyl formamide and water with poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly[(4-vinyl pyridine)-random-((2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)] (P2) and poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(acrylic acid) (P3), respectively. It is found that Janus micelles are generated from the P1-P2 pair in the presence of ferric ion, while wormlike micelles are formed from the P1-P3 duad. Upon stimulation with CO2 , Janus and wormlike aggregates are transferred into core-shell and spherical micelles, respectively.

Abstract:The stereocomplexation of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) enantiomers opens up an avenue for the formation of new materials with enhanced performance, specifically regarding their mechanical and thermal resistance and resistance to hydrolysis. Despite these useful features, the study of the stereocomplexation between block copolymers based on PLA in solution is limited, and a comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon is urgently needed. Herein, triblock copolymers of poly(N-hydroxyethyl acrylamide) and PL(or D)LA in which PLA was midblock (PHEAAmy-b-PL(D)LAx-b-PHEAAmy) were synthesized and assembled into cylindrical micelles via crystallization-driven self-assembly . The stereocomplexation between enantiomeric micelles facilitates the morphological transition, and the transformation process was investigated in detail by varying the aging temperature, block composition, and solvent. It was found that the solubility of the copolymers played a vital role in determining the occurrence and the speed of the chain exchange between the micelles and the unimers, which thereafter has a significant impact on the shape transition. These results lead to a deeper understanding of the stereocomplex-driven morphological transition process and provide valuable guidance for further optimization of the transition under physiological conditions as a new category of stimuli-responsive systems for biomedical applications.
Programmable Morphology Evolution of Rod-Coil-Rod Block Copolymer Assemblies Induced by Variation of Chain Ordering

Abstract:Morphology transition of block copolymer assemblies in response to external stimuli has attracted considerable attention. However, our knowledge about the mechanism of such a transition is still limited, especially for rod-coil block copolymers. Here, we report a programmable morphology evolution of assemblies induced by variation of chain ordering for rod-coil-rod triblock copolymers. A sequence of morphology transition from ellipsoids to disks, bowls, and vesicles is observed by increasing the solution temperature. At high temperatures, the mobility of the rod chain increases and the rigidity of the rod chain decreases. This gives rise to an ellipsoid-to-vesicle morphology transition. Dissipative particle dynamics theoretical simulations were performed to reveal the mechanism of this morphology transition process. It was found that the increase of rod chain mobility and the decrease of rod chain rigidity induce a decrease of chain ordering of rod blocks as temperature increases, which results in an ellipsoid-to-vesicle morphology transition. Abstract:A series of azo-containing copolymeric assemblies based on poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)-b-poly[(benzyl methacrylate)-co-(4-phenyl-azophenyl methacrylate)] [PDMA-b-P(BzMA-co-AzoMA)] were prepared by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization-induced self-assembly at high solid contents. Depending on the chain length of P(BzMA-co-AzoMA), spheres, worms, and vesicles were readily prepared. These azo-containing wormlike micelles underwent reversible worm-to-vesicle transformation upon alternative UV/vis light irradiation. By investigating the morphology evolution, a series of intermediates were observed, including coalesced worms as well as "octopus" like and "jellyfish"-like structures. The morphology transformation was rationalized by the volume change of the P(BzMA-co-AzoMA) block caused by the trans-cis isomerization of the azobenzene groups. It is the first demonstration of light-stimulated reversible worm-to-vesicle transition and would benefit for the understanding of morphology evolution of polymer assemblies under external stimuli.
Designing Polymersomes with Inhomogeneous Membranes by Co-Assembly of Block Copolymers for Controlled Morphological Reversibility

Abstract:Polymersomes with inhomogeneous membranes in composition and structure have generated widespread interest for the preparation of functionalized nanocarriers. We propose a simple but versatile strategy to manipulate inhomogeneous subdomains on polymersome membranes by the co-assembly of block copolymer blends with varied molecular architectures and chemistries. Both binary and ternary copolymer blends are considered to construct polymersomes, and the subdomains of the membranes are formed by controlling the difference in the flexibility and rigidity of different blocks. This difference contributes to the formation of disk-like domains (by rigid blocks) and soft domains (by flexible blocks) on the membrane. An interesting effect of this structure is that in response to external stimuli, the soft membrane domain becomes worm-like or porous to "open" the polymersome for matter exchange, while the rigid domain stays undecomposed and acts like an anchor binding all flexible copolymers. Once the external stimuli disappear, all flexible copolymers can be pulled back to restore the original polymersome morphology (i.e., "close" the polymersome). The specific morphological reversibility of hybrid polymersomes holds great potential for practical applications where changeable membrane permeability or shape under environmental stimuli is highly needed.

Abstract:Amphiphilic rod coil dendritic linear block copolymers PEG(G(m))-b-PMPCS (where m is the number of dendron generation, and m = 1, 2, 3) composed of a semirigid Percec-type dendron with hydrophilic poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) tails and a rodlike mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer, poly{2,5-bis[(4'-methoxy-phenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene} (PMPCS), were successfully prepared. The self-assembled structures undergo a transition from vesicles through large compound vesicles (LCVs) to short cylindrical micelles with increasing dendron generation. PEG(G(2))-b-PMPCS forms stable LCVs with porous surfaces of a narrow size distribution in a mixed solvent of tetrahydrofuran and water. The formation mechanism of the supramolecular structure with nano- and microsized scales is studied through changing the rate of water addition. It is composed of two steps: morphological transformation and vesicles fusion or differentiation. Vesicles are precursors for LCVs regardless of what the initial morphology is. However, the final LCV structures are different. Slow addition of water produces spherical LCVs, while those formed during fast water addition are irregular (like deformed spherical) LCVs.

Abstract:Use of a given physiological stimulus to delicately deform polymer assemblies is a challenging topic. Here we develop synthetic block copolymers to construct a series of CO2-sensitive self-assembled nanostructures that can simulate controllable deformations of the organelles in different ways. By controlling the CO2 stimulation levels, one can modulate the size, shape, and morphology of the polymer aggregates, which is conducive to understanding the stimuli-triggered dynamic reshaping process of polymer assemblies in aqueous solution.

Abstract:The integration of stimuli-responsive polymers with polymeric assemblies enables exquisite control over their nanostructures. Herein, we report the CO2-regulated self-assembly behaviors of a series of amphiphilic miktoarm star terpolymers star-[poly(ethylene glycol)-polystyrene-poly[2-(N,N-diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]] (mu-PEG-PS-PDEA). These mu-PEG-PS-PDEA assemblies show enhanced CO2-responsibility with the increase in the molecular weight (Mn) of the PDEA segment. For mu-PEG-PS-PDEAx (x represents the M-n of the PDEA block, x = 9.3k, 12.2k, 25k), we observed an unusual sphere/vesicle-to-lamella transition upon CO2 stimulation. As the Mn of PDEA increases from 9.3k to 25k, the morphology of these lamellae evolves from nanophase segregated E. coli-shaped nanosheets to nanoribbons, then to nanodiscs. We studied the pH, zeta potential and the microscopy images of the assemblies before and after CO2 stimulation, and accordingly speculated the possible mechanisms for the morphology transformation and the nanophase segregation. Our results indicate that the combination of CO2 stimulation with miktoarm star polymers could potentially extend the horizon of macromolecular self-assembly.

Abstract:Block copolymer worm stabilization via cross linking during polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is challenging. This is because block copolymer worms typically occupy a narrow regime in the phase diagram, and in situ cross linking may hinder a morphological transition from sphere to worm. In this work, in situ cross-linking of block copolymer worms during PISA was studied using three different asymmetric cross-linkers, each bearing a pair of double bonds with different reactivities. Specifically, ethanolic PISA syntheses targeting poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-bpoly(benzyl methacrylate) diblock copolymer worms were investigated in the presence of vinyl methacrylate, allyl methacrylate, or 4-allyloxybenzyl methacrylate. The copolymerizations of benzyl methacrylate with the asymmetric cross-linkers underwent progressive branching to finally cross-linking of the block copolymer worms. While all the three asymmetric cross-linkers were able to cross-link worms, 4-allyloxybenzyl methacrylate with a structure mimicking benzyl methacrylate showed the best results with minimal perturbation to the worm morphology.
Self-Assembly Of Abc Triblock Copolymer Into Giant Segmented Wormlike Micelles In Dilute Solution

Abstract:We report the self-assembly of a linear ABC triblock copolymer into the previously unknown architecture of giant segmented wormlike micelles (SWMs). The lengths and diameters of these giant SWMs were as high as ca. 10 mu m and 500 nm, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis revealed that the SWMs comprised sequences of repeated elemental parts, i.e., disks having a thickness of ca. 65 nm. A most interesting feature is that disks having different diameters became connected through threads to form various giant segmented wormlike micelles. A kinetic study indicated that the process of SWM formation occurred basically through three stages: (1) the ABC triblock copolymer self-assembled into small spheres of ca. 38 nm diameter; (2) these small spheres joined together to form intermediate shuttlelike structures; (3) the spheres within the shuttlelike structures rearranged and underwent further adjustment to form the final SWMs.

Abstract:Precise morphological control over self-assemblies is attractive due to their promising applications, especially in biotherapy. Block copolymer is a common choice for morphological control, since the geometry of self-assemblies can be easily predicted by the hydrophilic volume fraction. However, random copolymers are rarely taken into consideration. Here, starting from the same hydrophilic segment poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), and using CO2-responsive 2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) and hydrophobic styrene (St), we designed and synthesized a random and an entire block copolymer with similar polymerization degrees but different monomer sequences: PEO45-b-(DEAEMA(90)-r-St(66)) (P-r) and PEO45-b-DEAEMA(93)-b-St(66) (P-b). In aqueous solution, the two polymers both aggregate into vesicles. Upon CO2-stimulus, however, the vesicle of the random copolymer P-r transforms into a spherical micelle, whereas that of the triblock copolymer P-b shows an expansion instead of a morphological transition. The restricted hydration in the random structure of P-r accounts for such a morphological transition, and the random strategy in polymer design might be useful in self-assembly regulation.

Abstract:ABC triblock copolymer assemblies with reversible "breathing" behaviors based on poly[oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate]-b-poly(benzyl methacrylate)-b-poly[2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] (POEGMA-b-PBnMA-b-PDEA) are fabricated via one-pot sequential reverisble addition-fragmentation chain transfer dispersion polymerization. Using a POEGMA as the macromolecular chain transfer agent, chain extension with BnMA and DEA is conducted in ethanol, where PBnMA acts as the core-forming block, and the PDEA block endows the solvophilicity and CO2 -responsiveness. With the increment of the DP of PBnMA, the morphology of the assemblies evolves from spheres to worms, and to vesicles, while it degenerates from conglutinated vesicles to spheres as the DP of PDEA increases. After replacing ethanol with water, the morphologies of these assemblies remain unchanged, while their size decreases due to the collapse of the hydrophobic PDEA chains. Interestingly, due to the protonation and deprotonation of PDEA blocks, both the spheres and vesicles manifest a reversible expansion/shrinkage upon alternative CO2 /Ar stimulation, exhibiting distinctive breathing feature.
Solvent-Driven Formation of Worm-Like Micelles Assembled from a CO2-Responsive Triblock Copolymer

Abstract:Polymer worm-like micelles (WLMs) are difficult to target due to the narrow composition window. In this work, we report polymer WLMs self-assembled from a linear ABC triblock copolymer consisting of an intermediate fluorinated block of poly(2,2,3,4,4,4-hexafluorobutyl methacrylate) (F), a hydrophilic segment of poly(ethylene oxide) (O) and a CO2-responsive flank of poly(2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (E). In the mixed solvent of water and ethanol, the polymer aggregates evolve from spheres to short rods, then long cylinders and finally WLMs when the volume ratio of water increases from 0 to 50%. Upon the stimulus of CO2, the E block is protonated, thus transforms from hydrophobic to hydrophilic. However, the WLMs just partially return back to spheres even the protonation degree of E block is up to 95%. The closely packed arrangement of fluorinated block caused by the increasing interfacial tension of the fluorinated blocks and solvent could account for the formation of WLMs and its shape alternation under CO2 stimulus.

Abstract:Conventional methods for controlling self-assembly are generally based on the change in hydrophilic/hydrophobic volume fraction of diblock or triblock copolymers, which suffer from low structural diversity and limited chemical tunability. Inspired by nature, segmented multiblock copolymers (MBCs) offer unparalleled opportunities for engineering of biomimetic nanomaterials with tailored properties. However, the self-assembly of MBCs remains largely unexplored and poorly understood. In this study, we report a segmentation-mediated self-assembly strategy to manipulate the morphology of protein-mimic responsive MBCs by facilely altering the block numbers while holding the amphiphilicity constant. In particular, we found that an increased number of nearly alternating biodegradable poly(ε-caprolactone) and hydrophilic polyethylene glycol segments drives micelle-to-worm-to-vesicle transition. Moreover, the <span class="smallcaps smallerCapital">l</span>-cystine residue-enriched interlayer of assemblies enables a depolymerization-induced morphology reversion, resulting in a redox-hyper-responsive property and ultrafast intracellular drug release. Abstract:In order to develop polymeric self-assembly with an intelligent morphological transition property under appropriate stimuli, a series of pH-sensitive amphiphilic block copolymers have been prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Due to the delicately designed macromolecular structure, poly(ethylene glycol) 44 - b -poly(2-diisopropylaminoethyl methacrylate) 15 (PEG 44 - b -PDPA 15 ) could form self-assemblies with a controllable morphological transition in response to the physiological pH changes. As demonstrated by the results of dynamic light scattering (DLS) records and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs, PEG 44 - b -PDPA 15 could self-assemble into toruloid aggregates arranged by several single micelles at pH 7.4, but the morphology changed into uniform single micelles at pH 6.5. With a further decrease of pH value to 5.5, PEG- b -PDPA became double hydrophilic and could not self-assemble into any nanostructure. Therefore, this block copolymer provides a feasible approach to construct a nanoscale smart self-assembly with adjustable morphologies, which exhibits its potential for biomedical applications with specific physiological pH stimuli, such as intracellular delivery and tumor therapy.
Codendronized Polymers: Wormlike Molecular Objects with a Segmented Structure

Abstract:Herein, we report a series of novel codendronized polymers with an alternating segmented structure prepared by direct radical copolymerization of maleimide pendent with polyester dendron and styrene pendent with Percec-type polyether dendron. These dendronized polymers bearing different dendrons with rather high molar masses as determined by GPC with light scattering detectors were obtained under mild conditions. These novel polymers have been also characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). All of the codendronized polymers were confirmed to hold an alternating structure; therefore, they have a segmented structure. The SAXS results indicate that these polymers pack hexagonally in bulk, and the materials with self-organized structures-in-structures have been thus obtained whose properties can be tuned by dendron generation. Through further modification of one pendent dendron, amphiphilic codendronized polymers were produced. These dendronized polymers with a segmented structure of different polarity may have a potential to segregate lengthwise, and, therefore, many fascinating properties related to self-assembly are expected.

Abstract:Smart soft materials comprising stimuli-responsive micelles represent an innovative imitation of materials found in nature. These morphologically multicolored assemblies manifest versatile compliances in response to multiple triggers from environmental changes. Among these, asymmetric amphiphilic block copolymers afford elegant morphological structures in a number of giant micelles, including spheres, vesicles, and worms. Herein, we review the switching manifestation of polymer wormlike micelles (PWLMs) toward various stimuli, including heat, pH, CO2, redox, solvent, and multiple triggers reported so far. Besides, subsequent structural variation and macroscopic properties, such as viscosity, elasticity, and spontaneous “sol-gel” transition have been generalized and rationalized meticulously. Perspectives on promising prospects of smart PWLMs are presented in the conclusion.
