Abstract:Cross-linked polymer particles were prepared via surfactant-free emulsion copolymerization of 2-(diethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) and sodium methacrylate (SMA) using N,N'-methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBA) as a cross-linker. Generated particles are zwitterionic, possessing unique isoelectric points in the pH range of 7.5-8.0, which is readily tunable through CO2/N2 bubbling. The particles were found to be highly responsive to CO2/N2 switching, dissolving in water with CO2 bubbling and precipitating with N2 bubbling at room temperature. Pickering emulsions of n-dodecane were prepared using these particles as the sole emulsifier. These emulsions can be rapidly demulsified with CO2 bubbling, resulting in complete oil/water phase separations. Nitrogen bubbling efficiently re-emulsifies the oil with the aid of homogenization. The rapid emulsification/demulsification using CO2/N2 bubbling at room temperature provides these cross-linked zwitterionic particles with distinct advantages as functional Pickering surfactants.

Abstract:This study reports a green and efficient strategy using CO2 to trigger fast micellization of a liposoluble star copolymer in water. The star copolymers consisting of a hyperbranched polyethylene (HBPE) core and multiple poly(2( dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) arms were synthesized through a sequential Pd-catalyzed chain walking copolymerization of ethylene and 2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy) ethyl acrylate followed by an atom-transfer radical polymerization of DMAEMA. The star copolymers with large HBPE cores and low PDMAEMA arm numbers or short arms can be easily dissolved in aliphatic hydrocarbon solvents. The copolymers could be quickly dispersed in water and form micelles after CO2 bubbling. A N-2-mediated switching process following the CO2 treatment is shown to reverse the micelles back to their neutral state without causing additional micelle aggregation. The CO2 switchability of PDMAEMA prompted fast micellization of such liposoluble star copolymers. Abstract:This work reports the development of a reversibly coagulatable and redispersible polystyrene latex system that can be triggered by N(2)/CO(2). The coagulatability and redispersibility of the latexes were achieved by employing 0.9-5.6 wt % (N-amidino)dodecyl acrylamide (DAm), a reactive switchable surfactant, in an emulsion polymerization of styrene under CO(2) atmosphere. The resulted latex particles were readily coagulated by N(2) bubbling at 60 °C and redispersed by CO(2) bubbling and ultrasonication, which switched amidine moieties between neutral and ionic states. The coagulation/redispersion processes were repeatable. The prepared latexes showed good stabilities against electrolytes, especially with higher charges.

Abstract:Hypothesis: Recently, switchable or stimuli-responsive emulsions have attracted much research interest in many industrial fields. In this work, a novel CO2/N2-responsive surfactant was designed and developed to facilitate the formation of switchable oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions with fast switching characteristics between a stable emulsion and separate phases upon alternatively bubbling CO2 and N2. Experiments: The novel CO2/N2-responsive surfactant was facilely prepared by mixing an anionic fatty acid (oleic acid) and a cationic amine (1,3-Bis (aminopropyl) tetramethyldisiloxane) at a 1:1 molecular ratio, which was assembled based on electrostatic interactions. The structure and properties of the novel CO2/N2-responsive switchable surfactant were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, and interfacial tensions. Findings: The developed surfactant shows an excellent interfacial activity at the oil/water interface, which can significantly reduce the dosage of the switchable surfactant compared with previous CO2/N2-responsive surfactants. The dynamic interfacial tension of n-decane and aqueous phase decreased from 45 mN m-1 to 5 mN m-1 within 100 s with the addition of 0.2 mM surfactant. In this work, a low concentration of the novel switchable surfactant (e.g., 20.0 mM) can realize reversible emulsification and demulsification in an emulsion system as compared with the high dosage (e.g., ~150 mM) in previous reports, which will bring huge economic benefits in industrial applications in the future. Moreover, this work expands the family of ion-pair surfactants to small amino-functionalized molecules beyond Jeffamine D-230, which promotes the development of simple and switchable ion-pair surfactant. It is found that the O/W emulsions stabilized by the switchable surfactant show excellent stability, which can be stored for over 60 days at room temperature without any obvious change. Interestingly, the stable O/W emulsion is completely demulsified upon bubbling CO2 for 30 s and can be easily re-emulsified to the initial state after purging N2 at 60 °C within 10 min, which demonstrates a rapid and highly efficient switching behavior. The reversible emulsification and demulsification process is ascribed to the reversible assembly and disassembly of the switchable surfactant, which is induced by the removal and purge of CO2.
Advances in CO2-switchable surfactants towards the fabrication and application of responsive colloids

Abstract:CO2-switchable surfactants have selective surface-activity, which can be activated or deactivated either by adding or removing CO2 from the solution. This feature enables us to use them in the fabrication of responsive colloids, a group of dispersed systems that can be controlled by changing the environmental conditions. In chemical processes, including extraction, reaction, or heterogeneous catalysis, colloids are required in some specific steps of the processes, in which maximum contact area between immiscible phases or reactants is desired. Afterward, the colloids must be broken for the postprocessing of products, solvents, and agents, which can be facilitated by using CO2-switchable surfactants in surfactant-stabilized colloids. These surfactants are mainly cationic and can be activated by the protonation of a nitrogen-containing group upon sparging CO2 gas. Also, CO2-switchable superamphiphiles can be formed by non-covalent bonding between components at least one of which is CO2-switchable. So far, CO2-switchable surfactants have been used in CO2-switchable spherical and wormlike micelles, vesicles, emulsions, foams, and Pickering emulsions. Here, we review the fabrication procedure, chemical structure, switching scheme, stability, environmental conditions, and design philosophy of such responsive colloids. Their fields of application are wide, including emulsion polymerization, catalysis, soil washing, drug delivery, extraction, viscosity control, and oil transportation. We also emphasize their application for the CO2-assisted enhanced oil recovery (EOR) process as a promising approach for carbon capture, utilization, and storage to combat climate change.

Abstract:A novel CO2/N2 switchable aqueous foam was developed using a CO2-responsive surfactant N,N-dimethyl-N-dodecyl amine (C12A) and a conventional surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The performance and mechanism of this switchable foam were studied by both experiment and molecular simulation methods. Experimental results demonstrate that the foam stabilized by SDS/C12A surfactants has better stability and water carrying capacity than single C12A foam. The foam could be rapidly switched between stable and unstable states at ambient temperature with CO2 or N2 as the triggers. Simulation results shows that when CO2 was introduced, most of SDS and C12A molecules aggregated in the water phase, instead of adsorbing at the air-water interface to stabilize the foam films. The strong electrostatic attraction between protonated C12A and SDS molecules could account for the aggregation. Due to the presence of limited surfactants located at the air-water interface after introducing CO2, the foam bursts quickly.

Abstract:ABSTRACTA CO2‐switchable polymer surfactant was synthesized with 2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate. The conductivity, ζ potential, and particle size change illustrated the switchability of the surfactant, and this change could be repeated. Its surface tension decreased sharply when the sample was bubbled with CO2; this indicated the enhancement of the surface activity. In the heavy‐oil emulsion with a surfactant concentration of 8 g/L, the viscosity almost reached the highest stability. When CO2 overflowed the emulsion, it became unstable when the temperature beyond 40°C. The emulsion had a nice resistance to inorganic salt, which was maintained stably even when the concentration of NaCl was as high as 90,000 ppm. The emulsion could later be broken by the removal of CO2. Its hydration rate was over 22 times faster than that in the presence of CO2. Abstract:CO2 enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) is one of the CO2 utilization methods which can also geo-sequestrate greenhouse gases. Due to the weak adsorption on rock surface and excellent viscoelasticity performance, CO2-responsive zwitterionic wormlike micelles (WLMs) has been recognized as a promising method to control CO2 channeling. A novel CO2 responsive zwitterionic WLMs was developed by blending N-octadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-2-hydroxy-1-propane-sulfonate (OHSB), N,N,2,2-tetramethyl-1,3-propanediamine (TADPA) and sodium salicylate (NaSal). The responsive behaviors induced by varying agents (CO2 and HCl) are systematically studied by rheology tests and cryo-TEM measurements. The molecular structures of products are confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR. Moreover, the responsive mechanism is discussed in detail. The OHSB/NaSal/TADPA system shows morphological transformations between spherical micelles (a good flowing capacity) and WLMs (conducive to plugging) before and after purging CO2. The viscoelasticity and molecular structure of the system with CO2 bubbling is different from that with HCl titration, because TADPA molecules can react with CO2 to form a novel zwitterionic product: NH+(CH3)2-CH2-C(CH3)2-CH2-NHCO2− (TAH+DPACO2−, 78.95 %–83.52 %). This work provides a new strategy for the design of CO2-responsive zwitterionic WLMs and their applications in CO2 utilization schemes, including clean fracturing, mobility control, and CO2 foam flooding, etc.

Abstract:The ability to reversibly switch between latex solution and dried powder can potentially provide major economic and environmental benefits to emulsion related industries, especially in the substantial reduction of energy consumption and cost from the transportation and handling of latex water content. Here, a versatile CO2/N2‐switchable latex system with high reversibility is developed by combining a CO2‐responsive polymeric surfactant and a CO2‐responsive initiator. In particular, the coagulability from latexes to dried powder and redispersibility back to solution form are systematically examined, showing minimal changes in the recovered latex particle size, distribution, morphology, and ζ‐potential for powder samples both freshly dried and after three months storage under ambient conditions. Hence, such a gas‐switchable “solid emulsion” system with long‐term storage stability and versatility in emulsion copolymerization monomer selection can potentially make significant industrial contribution and advancement.
A CO2/N2-Responsive Pickering Emulsion Stabilized by Novel Switchable Surface-Active Alumina Nanoparticles

Abstract:This article reports the development of a novel switchable Pickering emulsion with rapid CO2/N2 responsiveness, which is stabilized using alumina nanoparticles hydrophobized in situ with a trace amount of a switchable superamphiphile via electrostatic interactions. With the introduction of CO2 for 30 s, the Pickering emulsion can be spontaneously demulsified with complete phase separation; the emulsion can then be reconstructed in response to N2 purging for 10 min followed by homogenization. Moreover, the stable Pickering emulsion can be stored for more than 60 days at room temperature without any visible change. The CO2/N2-responsive behavior of the switchable Pickering emulsion is attributed to the reversible desorption/adsorption of the switchable surfactants on the surfaces of the alumina nanoparticles upon the alternative bubbling of CO2 or N2. Thanks to the simple fabrication of the surfactant and the hydrophobization of the alumina nanoparticles, this research has developed an extremely facile and cost-efficient method for preparing a rapidly CO2/N2-responsive switchable Pickering emulsion. The dosage of the switchable surfactants has been significantly reduced by nearly 1500 times (from 150 to 0.1 mmol∙L−1) as compared with the dosage used in previous studies. Moreover, the as-prepared CO2/N2-responsive switchable Pickering emulsion is environmentally friendly, mild, and nontoxic; thus, it holds great potential for practical applications with considerable economic and environmental benefits, such as oil transport, fossil fuel production, environmental gases detection, and the encapsulation and release of active ingredients.
A Co2-Switchable Polymer Surfactant Copolymerized with Dmaema and Am As A Heavy Oil Emulsifier

Abstract:A CO2-switchable polymer surfactant was synthesized with acrylamide (AM) and 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA). The changes in conductivity, particle size, and zeta-potential were adopted to illustrate its switchability. The CMC of the surfactant was determined by the break point of the curve of surface tension versus concentration. An oil emulsion with 8 g/L surfactant almost reached the highest stability. The thermodynamic stability of the emulsion decreased sharply upon increase of the temperature. Adding an inorganic salt was hard to affect the emulsion stability because the surfactant is non-ionic. The emulsion could maintain its stability even if the concentration of NaCl was as high as 10 g/L. The emulsion could easily be broken by bubbling CO2. Its dehydration rate was 155 times faster than that without the presence of CO2, and the amount of residual oil in water was only 32.22 ppm, which displayed brilliant performance of de-emulsification.
CO2-switchable emulsion with controllable stability and viscosity based on chitosans and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide

Abstract:Emulsions have extensive applications in food, cosmetics, and agriculture, while the requirements for emulsions differ in various fields. It is a challenge for one emulsion to satisfy multiple requirements in different applications. Herein, CO2-switchable emulsions with controllable stability and viscosity were prepared by a mixture of chitosans (CS) and CTAB. After adding low concentrations of CTAB (e.g. 0.5 mM), the viscous Pickering emulsions stabilized by CS alone were converted into moderate-viscous Pickering emulsions due to the competition adsorption between CS aggregates and CTAB at the oil-water interface. The transformation of emulsion types (such as Pickering and conventional emulsions) and the emulsion's stability and viscosity were controlled by CO2/N2 trigger. Furthermore, at high CTAB concentrations (≥ 0.8 mM), a novel long-term stable conventional emulsion was obtained after the CS aggregates at the oil-water interface were entirely replaced by CTAB. Compared with other stimuli, CO2 is recognized as a green trigger that doesn't cause contaminations in the system, which has potential applications in organic synthesis and polymerization. Our strategy provides a simple and effective method to smartly control the properties of the emulsions (such as the emulsion type, stability, and viscosity), obtaining an intelligent emulsion to meet different requirements in many applications.

Abstract:CO2-Switchable surfactants are of great potential in a wide range of industrial applications related to their ability to stabilize and destabilize emulsions upon command. Molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to reveal the fundamental mechanism of the reversible emulsification/demulsification processes of a dodecane-saline system by a CO2-switchable surfactant that switches between active (i.e., N '-dodecyl-N,N-dimethylacetamidinium (DMAAH(+))) and inactive (i.e., N '-dodecyl-N,N-dimethylacetamidine (DMAA)) forms. The density profiles indicate that DMAAH(+) could increase the oil-water interfacial thickness to a greater extent compared to DMAA. DMAAH(+) could sharply reduce the interfacial tension of the dodecane-saline system, while DMAA only exhibits a limited decrease, which is in accordance with the experimental observation that DMAAH(+)/DMAA can reversibly emulsify/demulsify alkane-water systems. Our simulations showed that both the number and lifetime of hydrogen bonds (HBs) between DMAA and water are almost equal to those between DMAAH(+) and water. In DMAA, the N atom connecting with the alkyl tail acted as a HB acceptor, while the N atom attached by a proton in DMAAH(+) acted as a HB donor. Furthermore, the HBs between DMAAH(+) and HCO3- at the interfaces are relatively limited. Hence, it is deduced that the HBs are insufficient to achieve the CO2-switchability of DMAA/DMAAH(+). The Lennard Jones and coulombic potentials between DMAA/DMAAH(+) and other species show that the coulombic potentials between DMAAH(+) and water or anions (i.e., Cl- and HCO3-) sharply decrease with the increase of DMAAH(+) and are much lower than those in models with DMAA. The enhanced coulombic interactions between DMAAH(+) and anions lead to a remarkable reduction in interfacial tension and the emulsification of the alkane-saline system. Therefore, coulombic interactions are of crucial importance to the reversible emulsification/demulsification processes regulated by CO2-switchable surfactants, namely DMAAH(+)/DMAA.

Abstract:CO2-responsiveness is imported into amphiphilic block copolymers, poly[(N,N-diethylaminoethyl methacrylate)-b-(N-isopropylacrylamide)] (PDEAEMA-b-PNIPAM), and a system dual-responsive to CO2 and temperature is constructed. The copolymer self-assembles in aqueous solution, and undergoes phase transition when CO2 and temperature stimuli occur, since the stimuli give rise to the conversion of the hydrophilicity of both blocks. Combining CO2 and temperature as triggers, schizophrenic micelle to vesicle morphological transition of the polymer assemblies is controlled.

Abstract:Responsive polymer interfacial materials are ideal candidates for controlling surface wetting behavior. Here we developed smart nanostructured electrospun polymer membranes which are capable of switching oil/water wettability using CO2 as the trigger. In particular, the combination of CO2 -responsiveness and porous nanostructure enables the as-prepared membranes to be used as a novel oil/water on-off switch. We anticipate that the promising versatility and simplicity of this system would not only open up a new way of surface wettability change regulation by gas, but also have obvious advantages in terms of highly controlled oil/water separation and CO2 applications.
Synthesis and Kinetics of CO2-Responsive Gemini Surfactants

Abstract:Surfactants are hailed as "industrial monosodium glutamate", and are widely used as emulsifiers, demulsifiers, water treatment agents, etc., in the petroleum industry. However, due to the unidirectivity of conventional surfactants, the difficulty in demulsifying petroleum emulsions generated after emulsification with such surfactants increases sharply. Therefore, it is of great significance and application value to design and develop a novel switchable surfactant for oil exploitation. In this study, a CO2-switchable Gemini surfactant of N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-didodecyl butylene diamine (DMDBA) was synthesized from 1, 4-dibromobutane, dodecylamine, formic acid, and formaldehyde. Then, the synthesized surfactant was structurally characterized by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS); the changes in conductivity and Zeta potential of DMDBA before and after CO2/N2 injection were also studied. The results show that DMDBA had a good CO2 response and cycle reversibility. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of cationic surfactant obtained from DMDBA by injecting CO2 was 1.45 × 10−4 mol/L, the surface tension at CMC was 33.4 mN·m−1, and the contact angle with paraffin was less than 90°, indicating that it had a good surface activity and wettability. In addition, the kinetic law of the process of producing surfactant by injecting CO2 was studied, and it was found that the process was a second-order reaction. The influence of temperature and gas velocity on the reaction dynamics was explored. The calculated values from the equation were in good agreement with the measured values, with a correlation coefficient greater than 0.9950. The activation energy measured during the formation of surfactant was Ea = 91.16 kJ/mol.

Abstract:Adsorbing CO2-sensitive surfactants on the surface of nanoparticles is an important strategy for preparing stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsions. However, the microscopic mechanisms are still limited, owing to a lack of intuitive understanding at the molecular level on the interactions between nanoparticle and switchable surfactants at the oil-water interface. We employed the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to explore the mechanism behind the reversible emulsification/demulsification of a Pickering emulsion stabilized by silica nanoparticles (NPs) and CO2-switchable surfactants, named N-(3-(dimethylamino)propyl)alkyl amide (CPMA). MD results show that the protonated surfactant CPMAH+ has strong hydrophilicity, forming an adsorption layer at the oil-water interface. The ionic surfactants can be tightly adsorbed on NP surface through electrostatic interactions. Thus, the formed colloid particle has both hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties, which is a key factor in stabilizing emulsion. When CPMAH+ molecules were deprotonated to CPMA, the hydration activity of the headgroups reduced greatly, inducing a mixture with oil molecules. There are still a certain number of CPMA molecules residing at the oil-water interface due to the hydrophilic amine groups. The results from repeated simulations show that NP can either stay in the water phase or locate at the interface. Even NP was finally adsorbed on the interface and combined with CPMA or oil molecules, the adsorption configuration of CPMA on the NP surface was essentially different from that of CPMAH+. The potential of mean force confirmed that the combination between NP and CPMA is quite unstable due to the disappearance of electrostatic attraction. Different binding configurations and stability between NP and CPMA or CPMAH+ were the fundamental reason for the reversible emulsification/demulsification of Pickering emulsion.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive Pickering emulsions have aroused considerable amounts of attention recently because of their potential for on-demand demulsification. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising emulsifiers for the construction of Pickering emulsions due to their ultrahigh specific surface area, tunable porosity, and designable structures. However, CO2-responsive zirconium-based MOF-stabilized Pickering emulsions have been rarely reported up to now. Herein, a new series of amine-functionalized UiO-66-O-APTES were developed via the covalent post-modification of UiO-66-OH with different amounts of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) and were then applied to construct CO2-switchable Pickering emulsions. It was shown that UiO-66-O-APTES could emulsify toluene and water well to form an emulsion even at the content of 0.1 wt %. Significantly, the Pickering emulsion could be reversibly demulsified and re-emulsified by alternate CO2 and N2 bubbling under constant pressure. Mechanism results revealed that the CO2-switchable phase transition based on the formation of hydrophilic ammonium salts resulting from the reaction of APTES with CO2, which lowered the wettability of particles, reduced emulsion stability, and resulted in emulsion breaking. After CO2 was removed, the Pickering emulsion could be rebuilt by the reverse reaction. By using this strategy, a controllable and highly effective CuI-catalyzed cycloaddition reaction has been achieved, and the coupling of efficient condensation, product separation, and recovery of MOF catalysts has been demonstrated to give rise to a sustainable reaction process.
