Abstract:We investigated the 2D self-assembled thin films of rubrene molecules on metallic Cd(0001) surface using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. The isolated rubrene molecules adsorbed on Cd(0001) surface exhibit chiral characteristics. Three self-assembled structures, zigzag chain, linear chain and dimerized chain, have been identified in rubrene monolayer. The zigzag chain resembles the a-c plane of the orthorhombic crystal. Furthermore, we found the monoclinic phase of rubrene crystals in the second rubrene layer, theoretically predicted but not experimentally confirmed. These results provide new choices and ideas for preparing a new rubrene light-emitting device.

Abstract:Rubrene single crystals with pentagon, hexagon, lath-like, and needle-like shape were grown by physical vapor transport. The morphology of surface and transect of rubrene crystals was characterized by optical microscope, atomic force microscope and scanning electron microscope. Monolayers and layer-like structures were observed on the rubrene crystal surface and in the interior of single crystals, respectively. Size and quality of rubrene crystals could be controlled by tuning growth parameters including source temperature, deposition temperature, and growth time. Compared with the emission peak at 555nm of rubrene solution with the concentration of 10−5M, the emission peak of rubrene single crystals is at 649nm with a shift of 94nm. Hexagon etching pits with typical ladder-like structure were also observed on the (100) crystal plane and the density of dislocation lines is about 103cm−2.

Abstract:Abstract In this report, the morpho-structural peculiarities and the crystallization mechanisms in solution-processed, solvent vapor annealed (SVA) thin films of rubrene (5,6,11,12-tetraphenylnaphthacene) on different substrates were investigated. The high-quality rubrene crystal films with a triclinic crystal structure were successfully prepared on the FTO substrates (glass slide coated with fluorine-tin-oxide) modified by PLA (polylactic acid) for the first time. The area coverage of rubrene crystal and the sizes of rubrene dendritic crystals increased with increasing thickness of PLA film and concentration of rubrene solution. For rubrene molecules, FTO wafers with rough surface provided the possibility of heterogeneous nucleation. During the SVA process, there were two kinds of forces acting on the diffusion of rubrene molecules: one force was provided by the residual chloroform solvent, which was perpendicular to the substrate, and the other force was provided by gaseous dichloromethane, which was parallel to the substrate. The synergy of these two forces was proposed to explain the nucleation and the crystallization processes of rubrene films. The higher nucleus of PLA/rubrene dendrites and the layer-by-layer stacking of needle-shaped nanocrystalline PLA/rubrene were important for exploring their kinetic formation process.

Abstract:Large-size and high-quality rubrene single crystals have been grown by a solution technique. The biggest crystal has 4 mm dimension. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy both indicate that the crystals obtained are pure rubrene and did not incorporate the solvent at the detection level. The morphology of surface and transect of the rubrene single crystals was observed by optical microscope, atomic force microscope (AFM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Three-dimensional nucleation was happened on the surface of single crystals. The array of small and large straight steps was observed on the surface of the rubrene single crystals. Layer-like structures were also observed on the cross-section of single crystals. All results indicate that each large step is most probably formed from the piling of small steps and the growth mechanism of rubrene crystals grown from solution is probably a three-dimensional nucleation–layer-by-layer periods growth.
A New Phase of Rubrene Monoclinic Crystals on Cd(0001)

Abstract:The self-assembly 2 D thin films of rubrene molecules on a metallic Cd (0001) surface have been investigated using a lowtemperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Compared with other precious metals, the divalent hexagonal close packed metal Cd are less reminiscent of a free electron metal because of the strong repulsive interaction between the 4 d state and the conduction bands. It manifests some anisotropic behaviors in thermal conductivity, electron mean free path, and superconducting gaps. So in this paper, Cd was used as a substrate to study rubrene. First, isolated rubrene molecules reveal a tilted orientation on the substrate surface and exhibit three distinct protrusions with chiral feature. When the rubrene coverage increased to 0.4 ML, rubrene molecules begin to assemble into monolayer structure on the Cd (0001) substrate. Rubrene molecules adopt a side-lying orientation, and each rubrene molecule takes the form of zigzag with three bright spots. Upon further deposition of rubrene to 1.5 ML, the orientation transition from titled standing-up monolayer to standing-up monoclinic crystals was observed. There are two kinds of structures in the second layer. The first one is chainlike structure, where rubrene molecules are supported by two phenyls and the planes of tetracene are parallel to each other. The plane of tetracene backbone is perpendicular to the substrate plane. Another novel structure in the second layer of rubrene film is a new monoclinic phase. Furthermore, the rubrene monoclinic phase has a slight compressive strain in the a-axis direction, whereas the compressive strain in the c-axis direction becomes more pronounced. In addition, we noticed that one c-axis of a-c plane of monoclinic phase is parallel to the crystal orientation of the substrate. In particular, this monoclinic phase of rubrene was predicated by DFT calculation but has never been confirmed in experiment.
Use of an Underlayer for Large Area Crystallization of Rubrene Thin Films

Abstract:In this work, we discovered a very efficient method of crystallization of thermally evaporated rubrene, resulting in ultrathin, large-area, fully connected, and highly crystalline thin films of this organic semiconductor with a grain size of up to 500 mu m and charge carrier mobility of up to 3.5 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). We found that it is critical to use a 5 nm-thick organic underlayer on which a thin film of amorphous rubrene is evaporated and then annealed to dramatically influence the ability of rubrene to crystallize. The underlayer property that controls this influence is the glass transition temperature. By experimenting with different underlayers with glass transition temperatures varying over 120 degrees C, we identified the molecules leading to the best crystallinity of rubrene films and explained why values both above and below the optimum result in poor crystallinity. We discuss the formation of different crystalline morphologies of rubrene produced by this method and show that field-effect transistors made with films of a single-domain platelet morphology, achieved through the aid of the optimal underlayer, outperform their spherulite counterparts with a nearly four times higher charge carrier mobility. This large-area crystallization technique overcomes the fabrication bottleneck of high-mobility rubrene thin film transistors and other related devices and, given its scalability and patternability, may lead to practical technologies compatible with large-area flexible electronics.

Abstract:The poor crystallinity of rubrene in conventional films is a well-known obstacle limiting practical applications of rubrene in thin film transistors. Here we report a study on using 6,13-diazapentacene (DAP) as a template to induce crystallization of rubrene in thin film transistors. This study demonstrates that DAP is a suitable template molecule with negligible contribution to the conduction channel and leads to polycrystalline thin films of rubrene with field effect mobility as high as 0.68 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). This induced-crystallization strategy highly depends on a unique octadecylphosphonic acid (ODPA) bilayer-step surface, which is found to play important roles in controlling the growth of both DAP and rubrene.

Abstract:We report on the optical and structural characterization of rubrene polycrystalline films fabricated from vacuum deposition with various substrate temperatures (Tsub). Depending on Tsub, the role of twisted and planar rubrene conformational isomers on the properties of rubrene films is focused. The temperature (T)-dependent inverse optical transmission (IOT) and photoluminescence (PL) spectra were performed on these rubrene films. The origins of these IOT and PL peaks are explained in terms of the features from twisted and planar rubrene molecules and of the band characteristics from rubrene molecular solid films. Here, two rarely reported weak-peaks at 2.431 and 2.605 eV were observed from IOT spectra, which are associated with planar rubrene. Besides, the T-dependence of optical bandgap deduced from IOT spectra is discussed with respect to Tsub. Together with IOT and PL spectra, for Tsub > 170 °C, the changes in surface morphology and unit cell volume were observed for the first time, and are attributed to the isomeric transformation from twisted to planar rubrenes during the deposition processes. Furthermore, a unified schematic diagram in terms of Frenkel exciton recombination is suggested to explain the origins of the dominant PL peaks performed on these rubrene films at 15 K.

Abstract:Singlet fission (SF) is a multielectron process in which one singlet exciton S converts into a pair of triplet excitons T+T. SF is widely studied as it may help overcome the Shockley-Queisser efficiency limit for semiconductor photovoltaic cells. To elucidate and control the SF mechanism, great attention has been given to the identification of intermediate states in SF materials, which often appear elusive due to the complexity and fast timescales of the SF process. Here, we apply 10fs-1ms transient absorption techniques to high-purity rubrene single crystals to disentangle the intrinsic fission dynamics from the effects of defects and grain boundaries and to identify reliably the fission intermediates. We show that above-gap excitation directly generates a hybrid vibronically assisted mixture of singlet state and triplet-pair multiexciton [S:TT], which rapidly (<100fs) and coherently branches into pure singlet or triplet excitations. The relaxation of [S:TT] to S is followed by a relatively slow and temperature-activated (48 meV activation energy) incoherent fission process. The SF competing pathways and intermediates revealed here unify the observations and models presented in previous studies of SF in rubrene and propose alternative strategies for the development of SF-enhanced photovoltaic materials.

Determination of Solubility and Nucleation Kinetics of Valnemulin Hydrochloride Solvate

Abstract:Dissolution and nucleation are the two indispensable processes to be investigated in order to understand crystallization behavior of a compound. In this study, the crystalline valnemulin hydrochloride water–ethanol solvate (VHWES) was successfully prepared by the solution crystallization method. The solubility of VHWES in ethanol + water binary solvents was measured at eight different temperatures from 278.15 to 313.15 K using a static analytical method, and these solubility data was correlated by several different thermodynamic models. The model parameters were calculated and analyzed based on the difference between calculated results and measured solubility data. It was found that the results correlated by thermodynamic models are in good agreement with the measured solubilities. Furthermore, the nucleation process of VHWES in the ethanol + water (molar ratio of 1:1) system was investigated in detail. The induction times of nucleation and metastable zone width were measured at various temperatures under different supersaturations, and interfacial energies were calculated using classical nucleation theory. The results reveal that homogeneous nucleation predominates under high supersaturation while heterogeneous nucleation predominates under low supersaturation.
Molecular stacking controlling coherent and incoherent singlet fission in polymorph rubrene single crystals

Abstract:Three rubrene single crystals with different stacking geometries are prepared. Micro‐area transient absorption spectroscopy and quantum mechanical calculations demonstrate that coherent singlet fission via CT‐mediated pathway (LE→CT→TT) and incoherent singlet fission by direct LE and TT coupling (LE→TT) are controlled by molecular stacking through electronic couplings between relevant excited states. Singlet fission (SF) is an appealing process where one photoexcited singlet transforms to two triplets, which can overcome thermalization energy loss and improve solar cell efficiency. However, it remains unclear how intermolecular coupling, which is subject to molecular stacking, controls SF pathways and dynamics. Here, we prepared polymorph rubrene single crystals with different stacking geometries, including orthorhombic (Orth.), triclinic (Tri.), and monoclinic (Mono.) phases. By micro‐area ultrafast spectroscopy, we find that Orth. and Tri. phases with closer π‐π stacking exhibit co‐existing coherent and incoherent SF channels while loosely stacked Mono. phase shows only incoherent SF. Furthermore, incoherent SF is thermally activated in Orth. but barrierless in Mono. and Tri. phases. Quantum mechanical calculation reveals that different electronic coupling strength in different phases leads to different SF dynamics. This study demonstrates that molecular stacking governs SF dynamics through electronic coupling, providing guidance for designing efficient SF materials via crystal structural engineering.

Abstract:Rubrene is a nonplanar molecule, it is recognized that only amorphous rubrene films can be obtained on such substrates as Au, SiO2, and Al2O3 by organic molecular beam deposition or ordinary vacuum evaporation. In this work, rubrene organic single crystals with very smooth surfaces were used as substrates. Well-ordered rubrene thin films were obtained by ordinary vacuum evaporation, and the substate temperature is room temperature. Two-dimensional nucleation-monolayer by monolayer growth and homoepitaxy was demonstrated when the deposition rate was kept at 0.2 nm/min. Furthermore, when the deposition rate was increased to 0.6 nm/min, two-dimensional hexagons were observed in the growth process of rubrene thin films and are similar to the two-dimensional islands with regular shapes observed in homoepitaxy growth of inorganic thin films.

Abstract:Growth of rubrene thin films at room temperature on bare SiO2 substrates and on top of a α-quaterthiophene (α-4T) inducing layer on SiO2 substrates was investigated. The rubrene thin films and α-4T inducing layers were prepared by vacuum deposition method and were characterized by atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Rubrene thin films directly deposited on SiO2 substrates had a number of holes on their surface, while the ones grown on top of a α-4T inducing layer on SiO2 substrates exhibited highly ordered morphology and structure. It was found that large-area and ordered rubrene thin films could properly match with the α-4T inducing layers in the prepared heterostructures. Two different rubrene film growth mechanisms were observed from results obtained for films with different thicknesses. We conclude that rubrene thin films prepared at low temperature using α-4T inducing layer on SiO2 substrates hold a great promise of application in large-area and flexible displays.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) CsPbI3 exhibits enhanced phase stability compared with 3D CsPbI3. However, the issue of the uncontrollable crystallization process limits its photovoltaic performance. Here, the influence of a binary mixed solvent on the film quality and photovoltaic properties of (PEA)2Cs4Pb5I16 (n = 5) is studied in detail. It is demonstrated that the crystallization rate and crystal growth can be controlled by adjusting the amount of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Optimizing the solvent composition with adding 10% DMSO in pure dimethyl formamide (DMF) leads to perfect coverage, larger flaky 2D grains, reduced grain boundaries, and a better vertical orientation to the substrate due to the formation of a more stable intermediate phase. This can form good interface contact, which is beneficial to charge transport/extraction between TiO2 (electron transport layer, ETL) and perovskite, finally resulting in improved device performance. The enhancement of the power conversion efficiency of the optimized device based on DMF/DMSO (9:1) is 3.57% compared with the reference device based on pure DMF. This work illustrates the role of crystallization kinetics in the RP CsPbI3 film and offers a simple and effective method for high-performance 2D CsPbI3 solar cells.

Abstract:Crystalline rubrene (RUB) in the orthorhombic structure can be regarded as a workhorse in organic optoelectronics. So far, however, its great potential for device integration has been held back by the struggle to obtain high quality and photo-oxidation resistant RUB thin films. Here, we propose an effective strategy to obtain homogeneous, highly crystalline, and oriented RUB thin films, which relies on a spontaneous amorphous-to-crystal transition driven by organic epitaxy occurring at room temperature in vacuum: this crucial process dictates the final morphological, structural, and optoelectronic properties of the film. To probe the kinetics of the transition, we combine an ex-situ analysis via polarized optical spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy with a photoluminescence investigation carried out in-situ , based on monitoring the efficiency of the singlet fission process typical of crystalline RUB. Building on the insights gained, we tune the thin film growth and post-growth parameters, so as to obtain centimeter-scale, highly homogeneous and crystalline RUB thin films, constituted by several μm-sized and coherently oriented domains, featuring oxidation resistance.

Abstract:Antisolvent crystallization can be used as an alternative to cooling or evaporation for the separation and purification of solid product in the pharmaceutical industry. To improve the process understanding of antisolvent crystallization, the use of in-line tools is vital. In this study, the process analytical technology (PAT) tools including focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM), particle video microscope (PVM), and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) were utilized to monitor antisolvent crystallization of sodium scutellarein. FBRM was used to monitor chord count and chord length distribution of sodium scutellarein particles in the crystallizer, and PVM, as an in-line video camera, provided pictures imaging particle shape and dimension. In addition, a quantitative model of PLS was established by in-line NIRS to detect the concentration of sodium scutellarein in the solvent and good calibration statistics were obtained (r(2) = 0.976) with the residual predictive deviation value of 11.3. The discussion over sensitivities, strengths, and weaknesses of the PAT tools may be helpful in selection of suitable PAT techniques. These in-line techniques eliminate the need for sample preparation and offer a time-saving approach to understand and monitor antisolvent crystallization process.
Substrate Induced Molecular Conformations in Rubrene Thin Films: A Thickness Dependent Study

Abstract:A systematic experimental and theoretical study about substrate induced molecular conformation in rubrene thin films by varying film thickness from sub-monolayer to multilayer, which currently attracts substantial attention with regard to its application in organic electronics, is performed. The clean polycrystalline Au and Ag were used as noble-metals, whereas, H passivated and SiO2 terminated Si (100) were used as dielectric substrates. Angle dependent near edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) was employed to understand the molecular conformation whereas atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to investigate the surface morphologies of the films. X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of rubrene molecules with flat and twisted conformations were calculated using density functional theory (DFT). All the observed NEXAFS spectra of rubrene thin films at various thicknesses and onto different substrates were explained in terms of different combination of the spectral intensity from the twisted and the flat molecules. In contrast to general findings, comparatively rough polycrystalline Ag surface is found to support growth of better quality rubrene films. The results have important implications for the understanding of the substrate induced molecular conformations in rubrene thin films with its thickness and are beneficial for the improvement of the device performance.

Crystallization solvent design based on a new quantitative prediction model of crystal morphology

Abstract:Solution crystallization is an important separation unit operation in active pharmaceutical ingredient production. Solvent is one of the important factors affecting crystal morphology. How to select/design suitable solvents is still one of the most urgent problems in the crystallization field. In this paper, a framework for crystallization solvent design based on the developed quantitative prediction model of crystal morphology is proposed. First, molecular dynamics is used to predict the crystal morphology in solvents. Next, solvent descriptors are selected by stepwise regression method. Then, the quantitative relationship between crystal aspect ratio and solvent descriptors is developed. Subsequently, Computer-Aided Molecular Design method is integrated with the developed quantitative prediction model. The crystallization solvent design problem is expressed as a Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming model with maximum yield as the objective function, which is solved by decomposition algorithm. Finally, the crystallization solvent design framework is applied to two cases and experimental verification is implemented.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This work evaluated the pot and 2,6-DNCB mixture was measured and modeled to reveal the relationship between temperature and composition. Next, according to the phase diagram, an operation trajectory was optimized to balance the purity and yield to meet the industrial application requirement. The results indicated the purity and yield of 2,4-DNCB could reach 99.48% and 66.6%, respectively. During the trajectory optimization, process parameters including the separation performance Kc and crystal packing structure parameters τaveandΦ were used to describe the separation process. At last, boundary limitation (BL) and sweating intensity (SI) models were proposed to describe the pores in crystal packing structure and explain the sweating behavior, respectively. The results revealed the features of pores connection degree in high porosity system and sweating intensity impacts on the product yield and purity, which were both highly consistent with the experimental results. Overall, melt crystallization is an effective technique for 2,4-DNCB purification, and the proposed evaluation parameters can describe the experimental results precisely.

Abstract:Flaky crystals are fragile, rendering them unsuitable for various applications including use, processing, storage and transportation. This work investigates the growth and morphology regulation mechanisms of flaky crystals using benzanilide as a model material. Initially, block-like crystals are prepared by solvent screening and cooling crystallization with its morphology greatly improved. Subsequently, growth kinetics of (111), (1–10) and (020) faces are established with crystal growth experiments. The crystal growth of (001) face is also determined to follow a two-dimensional nucleation model with the microscopic surface analysis using atomic force microscopy. The changes of the surface integration resistance and the growth step height are regarded as kinetic mechanisms of the growth behavior and crystal morphology modulation by solvent and supersaturation. Finally, the molecular mechanism of the modulation of the solvent in crystal morphology is revealed base on crystal surface structure analysis and molecular dynamics simulations. The weak solvent-interface polar interactions facilitate the incorporation of benzanilide molecules into the weak polarity (001) face, leading to the surface roughening and increased crystal thickness when employing strongly polar solvents such as acetonitrile. Unlike the former, the relatively weak hydrogen bonding interactions between solvents and strong polarity (020) face, and the higher diffusion ability of molecules promote the rapid growth and disappearance of (020) face in ethanol and acetonitrile with strong hydrogen bond formation ability. This study can contribute to a deeper understanding of the solvent effect on crystal morphology and provide guidance for optimizing crystallization conditions to obtain shape-tailored crystal products.
